    This is the best US type set I have seen on UA-cam and the first time I have seen these albums completed!! The reason they don't make those albums anymore and have abbreviated the required coins in newer albums like the Dansco 7070 etc. is because of the monumental challenge required to fill those holes for the rare late 1700's and early 1800's coins. Well done!! That Chain Cent is Unreal!!

    This collection is worth many thousands! Even though many are in low condition! Still very nice and what a great idea in mind to try to collect a type set for colonial coins including foreign pieces that were used here. I have a lot of stuff only I collect problem free Very Fine or above.. I will need to replace all of my bust dollars including the flowing hair and a few half cents on the early types as I had to liquidadate due to difficult times recently.. But that's only for now. Once I retrieve 401 K I will recover what I had! Still... would use gloves 🧤.. Even though they are rough!👍👍

    Man that’s alot of older coins to assemble, I prefer mint state/ AU coins in my type set that one would drive me nuts not being able to find a coin I liked in the right condition, or having to spend a large sum of cash per coin. Very nice set though well done 👍 enjoyed the video

      Thanks for your thoughts. As long as I can see all the major details, I like collecting circulated coins that show some signs of their age. It gives them more character for me, although I know I'm in the minority with these opinions. It's great that we can all approach this hobby with different objectives, and it's fun to compare notes. Thanks!

    You are going to de-value those coins by mishandling them like regular pocket change! Do you plan to spend them as face value at the nearest convenience store??🤔

    You really need to wear gloves if you’re not going to handle the coins from the rim. You really need a Dansco album.

    • @treeclimberdave3095
      @treeclimberdave3095 6 місяців тому

      I appreciate your concern for my coins. I collect only well circulated coins that have passed through thousands of hands over decades or centuries, all without the protection of gloves or encapsulation. I enjoy handling them, and I believe I am not doing them any harm. Regarding Dansco albums, they do not have spaces for the earlier coins which I enjoy the most. I did, however, find some old Whitman albums in the style of Dansco that do have spaces for the early types, and I have transitioned to these so that I can see both sides of each coin, and also to give them better protection.

    I really loved the coins you thoughtfully acquired & was most impressed with your Very Early U. S. Coins of different denominations. Thank You for sharing. I have seen many of the Type Coins over the years but the very Early Ones Are Truly Rare and a treat to see; I also appreciated you handling some of them & holding them in your hand kind of connecting with their history and showing both sides, bearing in mind there are protocols such as using white cotton gloves while carefully handling collector coins or by handling them by holding them only on the edges (for those that may watch and not know this). Best Regards To You, & may you have good fortune in hunting down & filling any of the remaining spaces in your collection.

      Thank you for your thoughts. I've had a great time putting this set together. I've tried hard to assemble a group that looks nice together, with clear enough details to see, but also showing the signs of decades of use. Good point about safe handling. Because I'm interested in well circulated coins, the use of gloves is not so critical for my collection, but it is absolutely best practice for collections of higher grade coins.

      It is challenging to find an album with spots for the older coins. I've actually switched to a new set of Whitman albums with even more slots to fill. It's a three album set (Whitman numbers 9434, 9435, and 9453). The first is United States Type Set Small Coins, the second is United States Type Set Large Coins, and the third is U.S. Gold Type Set. These are better because they have the plastic strips to protect the coins and so you can see both sides.

    I come back to this video every few months to look at these amazing coins. It's kind of inspired me to attempt to collect a complete U.S. type set starting in the 1700's. Also, if you ever are interested in a similar album that holds all of these coins in a more protective way, you can check out both the Whitman #9434 and #9435 Type albums, or the Library of Coins albums. Also, the wreath cent and liberty cap coppers are some of the most appealing coins I've seen for those types, they are beautiful.

      @@treeclimberdave3095 You're welcome! I really enjoy viewing other people's type collections, and yours is by far my favorite I have seen. • @treeclimberdave3095
      @treeclimberdave3095 Рік тому

      @@MP-ft8de You're right. Most of the remaining holes are pretty tough, but I have filled two since the video. I've added an 1870 dollar and also a holed 1796 dime. I also upgraded the capped bust cent. Since I've now run into really expensive coins to fill the remaining holes, I've transitioned to working on a loose type set of coins that circulated in the American Colonies including colonial coppers as well as Spanish, English, French, and other foreign coins that were in use here in the 1600's, 1700's, and 1800's. The Spanish coins minted in Mexico and South America are particularly interesting because the early ones are all hand struck and one of a kind.

    The display case colors are retro. A throwback to when one wore red to go hunting. I like that. More than just “a few” originated from elsewhere. The stone and mineral used identify this. The one labeled Winnebago Cty is a Fox piece. (close relative of the Sac) There are no Winnebago (Hochungara), pieces in that collection. Maybe those are in another case somewhere.

    Tell us exactly how you authenticated pieces purchased at estate sales and auctions. Any experienced collector knows how many repros exist. Sooo, exactly what did you look for, and what methods were used? What are the top characteristics of a fake? Of an ancient piece?

    • @treeclimberdave3095
      @treeclimberdave3095 2 роки тому

      This is a very big question, but I'll try and give some insight. Whenever possible, I purchase from the finder or the family of the finder of the artifacts. This is the best way to guarantee authenticity and also to record the best possible provenance for each piece. I also only collect artifacts from Wisconsin. This means that I am very familiar with the different raw materials found in the area and how they age over time. I always carefully examine the surface of each artifact to make sure there is clear patina from the thousands of years the piece spent in the ground. I look for minerals like iron adhering to the surface of the stone, as well as color and texture changes to the surface of the stone that occur depending on the type of material and the soil conditions. Some materials even exhibit color changes from sun exposure or from spending many years in a creek. I also look for deposits of sediment and staining under hinge fractures, as well as correct workmanship for the type of point and time period. Artifacts also often exhibit evidence of use, including edge wear, resharpening, and damage from impact. All of these clues can help to demonstrate the antiquity of a piece. In practice, I'll be thinking about all of these factors and more, both for individual items, but also for a collection as a whole, when I make a determination about authenticity.
