    TIPS FOR BEING VEGETARIAN IN JAPAN: • Being Vegetarian in To...
    Correction:
    0:05 Last time I went here, in Spring 2024, they unfortunately weren't serving the vegetarian ramen any more, sorry! There are lots of other options for vegetarians in Japan in a playlist on my channel.
    The 10th floor of Kyoto Station is full of ramen restaurants. I was really surprised to stumble across one that had vegetarian ramen, which is really unusual in Japan. Most ramen noodle dishes contain dashi (fish stock) or have meat (pork) based soup, but here the stock is vegetarian. They also serve regular meat ramen, and the restaurant was founded by the inventor of tsukemen (dipping noodles).
    The restaurant is Yamagishi Taishoken, on the 10th floor in Kyoto Station (a couple of branches elsewhere in Japan too, including Ikebukuro in Tokyo): www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaur...

    Thank you for the recommendation to Yamagishi Taishoken. My wife and I are vegan and came here and presented them the vegan card just to make sure and they said that they don't serve vegan ramen. Luckily the one diagonally in front of it had vegan ramen. The restaurant is called Menya Iroha. It was on the salty side and tasted like 2 minute noodles but we didn't care as we were hungry and happy to support a place that do serve vegan options.

      I wonder if they changed their menu? At least you found somewhere to eat though. If you're still in Kyoto, I'd really recommend Mimikou - I loved their curry udon & they have several vegetarian options (not sure if they're all vegan but some are). It's near Gion and Southern Higashiyama www.happycow.net/reviews/mimikou-kyoto-65102

    This is very useful to know! ^^ There isn't a great deal of information about vegetarian/vegan food in Japan and it really worries it's going to be real a struggle when I visit

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  7 років тому +1

      I was worried too before I first went! It's not easy but you'll be able to survive with a bit of research. Most places don't have vegetarian options, so I'd highly recommend making a list of places to eat before you go, then you'll be able to enjoy lots of great Japanese food without getting stressed when you're there. Did you see my other video with tips for being vegetarian in Japan? :-) ua-cam.com/video/x7PXiMf0OwM/v-deo.html

    Hi there just to confirm, I choose to not have onions and garlic right? As I cannot consume those

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 років тому +1

      It can be difficult to avoid specific ingredients with the language barrier, so I'd probably recommend printing out a card to show to the staff at restaurants - like these ones: justhungry.com/japan-dining-out-cards It's not always clear which ingredients are in meals in restaurants.
      One restaurant I've heard of that offers vegetarian dishes without onions/garlic is Chabuzen in Shimokitzawa (in Tokyo): tokyovege.com/chabuzen

    so would the ramen be vegan if you don't have an egg with it? or are there some other animal products being used? :o

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  7 років тому +1

      I don't know all the ingredients but I'm not aware of any animal products in the broth. I heard that most ramen noodles contain egg though, unless you're at a vegan restaurant, so I think it's vegetarian but not vegan.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Рік тому +1

      Hope you're having a great time! To get to the ramen floor you need to go up the big staircase in the main atrium part of Kyoto station, towards the observation deck, then the door into the building's on the left

    • @schwarzschaz
      @schwarzschaz Рік тому

      @@cakeswithfaces thank you for the prompt reply. I'll try to find this observation deck. Is there anything else around that I can use as a pointer?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Рік тому +1

      @@schwarzschaz You need to go up the light-up staircase in the video a 00:50. It's in the large, main atrium of the station (that you can also see in the video). Hope that helps!
