DELTARUNE Orchestrated - Field of Hopes and Dreams

  • Man, this was one tough track to produce. I spent more time on this than all the other deltarune tracks combined! Not that this piece was particularly difficult conceptually, but it uses a musical style I am unfamiliar with, and getting it to sound good enough forced me to finally learn how to mix better.
UA-cam user "I'm Very Angry it's not Butter!!" (yes that whole phrase is the username) suggested I try to incorporate a bit of Irish Jig into the piece, which I thought about and decided it would be a good fit. I did a bit of research on the instruments used, and listened to a lot of Irish/Scottish folk music, as well as similar sounding music, like Rend Collective, Hiroyuki Sawano's soundtrack for Seven Deadly Sins, and Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers soundtrack. I learned that Jig music is normally 6/8 time, while Scottish Reels use the 4/4 common time, which fits Field of Hopes and Dreams' time signature. While I incorporate some trademark elements of Irish Jig and Scottish Reel, I hesitate to designate my music as that style, as I am all over the place with my arrangement.
Breaking down the original track, there are three distinct parts: the establishing beat, the main deltarune theme, and the bridge solo. The rhythm is easily my favorite part of the track, and hearing the percussion come in while playing deltarune for the first time was just sublime - a much stronger first impression than Undertale's opening. And naturally, this is the area I played around with the most, as the repeating rhythm and motifs could be extended as long as I want, unlike the melody of the second and third parts. It is here where I added the fiddle violin. The solo violin I was using was not designed for fast fiddle playing, and I had to tweak the legato articulation to get it sounding close, and my violin playing friend did not have enough time to practice this piece. Next time I'll plan ahead! I created a simple phrase and tried my hardest to jam it everywhere in the track. When you hear it, it's your cue to drop everything and dance! However, with that said, my favorite part of the arrangement is still the middle main theme portion. It's just really catchy!
The setup for the Irish Jig / Scottish Reel sound is as follows. In addition to the fiddle violin, I used the mandolin, accordion, tambourines, Bodhran drums (Irish frame drums), accoustic guitar, cajon, and Kick drums. When mixing the percussion, I supplemented the Cajon/Kick drum beats with a regular drumset. I designed the space of the instruments by placing the Jig/Reel instruments in the front of the stage, with the orchestra behind them. I believe the final sound is much more balanced than the previous THE WORLD REVOLVING track. Because I want to preserve the awesome beat of the track, I finally went to learn and practice how to mix percussion correctly. A common complaint with my arrangements is that everything sounds a bit flat, and a big reason for that is that the drums are never punchy enough. And so here I am utilizing all the techniques I learned: Parallel EQ'ing, Parallel Compression, Saturation, Triggering. I still haven't fully mastered the technique, but I am improving!
Deltarune Orchestrated will be available on iTunes/Spotify upon completion of the album.
MP3 and FLAC available for Patrons. ► / thesecondnarrator

When the fiddle came in at 0:16, I knew I was gonna be in a special ride. A true remake like no other.
Getting the violin legato to sound right is one of the hardest parts of composing electronically, and you nailed it amazingly.
Your mixing and EQing improved by miles. Putting the Irish-jig instruments in the front was a great decision in terms of space.
And the accordion. WOW! It fit so beautifully in the mix.
In terms of the arrangement itself, it is just fantastically beautiful. The instrumentation was perfect, and your artistic choices of Irish timbres are what made this cover truly special. And I couldn't help but almost start dancing around 2:00. A jolly addition! The punchy drums were spot on!
Like what another comment mentioned, your sub count is CRIMINAL. I think I may have an idea to change that soon, as well as help many underrated orchestral makers for Undertale and other video games... I'm gonna get back to you soon.

This song has been kind of a wild ride for me. Discovering Toby Fox and all of his music through Undertale is highly satisfying but also interesting - the melodies and way he puts music together reminds me a lot of melodies I've thought of in my head. I think many can relate to this - Toby Fox has a magical way of putting his melodies in mind to actual instruments and notes. After hearing most of his music and discovering Fields of Hopes and Dreams, it felt like I had reached the summit of his melodic brilliance because this song in particular has that remarkable rhythm that makes the pace of the melody so much fun to listen to. It's tireless - I can't think of how many times I've listened to this tune. And I can't say that about much music, period!
That brings me to this remake. The level of creativity taken is at an elite level. You really searched far and wide for the right fit of natural instruments to bring about the same feeling of DETERMINATION that the original hits on so hard. And you've done it here with adding in a unique take on some of the parts of the song. None of it feels out of place - the accordion is a natural fit for the saxophone and helps glue together the constant driving drum beat with the piano and violin. While I adore the sax in the original, it seems like the accordion fits better with the overall lighter feeling from the natural instruments, especially the strings. It still drives that feeling of resolution, that you're going to get through this without a fight NO MATTER WHAT, which is what the sax did well too.
The other thing I want to mention is the sound quality and the mix is spot on. Whatever you're using to balance each instrument and the stage, keep using it. You have a great ear for sound quality. I find a lot of "amateur" (I put quotes here because, this is NOT amateur.. this is pro level) mixes don't sound great on my hi fi at home. Yours always do.
I love it. Thanks for making this. It brings me a lot of joy to listen to because it's a perfect blend of video game and orchestra. I can't wait to hear more of your stuff.

This song has so, so many good memories. I know it hasn't even been a year since this video was uploaded, but god. I first heard this song (stupidly enough) when I was playing Roblox and one level reminded me of the original song. So I looked it up on UA-cam and found this absolute masterpiece. I was on the phone with my (now) boyfriend, and he liked it too. So now whenever I hear it, I just get chills all down my spine and butterflies in my stomach. Thank you so much for sharing your impeccable talents with the world

  • @ZaCloud-Animations___she-her

So gorgeous, so perfectly arranged! The Celtic feel is just what it needed!
But uhh.... what's with the very artificial-sounding & jarring down-transposition at sections like 1:35? Like ya just accidentally pulled the tone down there on all layers (cat got on the keyboard & you didn't 'Undo' far back enough?), or put your finger on a playing record to slow down the speed or something? I'm sad that those awkward moments are marring this otherwise stunning, absolutely magnificent & otherwise flawless piece.
I know it's been a few years, & you've done amazing work since then. Still, ow, my heart falls a bit at those parts, even though the rest of the piece lifts me back up. A net positive, at least.

The Second Narrator Hey, one musician to another, If I were you, make sure you know what mode the piece you're writing/arranging is in. There are certain sections where you use the Aeolean mode (minor, flat 6th (E-flat)), which is what the original song/piece is in from the game; I don't recall any E-naturals. You had a tendency to slip into the Dorian mode by mistake (with a raised 6th (E-natural) which is especially prevelant in your added violin solos). If you're going to use that violin solo, I would've transposed that up a fourth so it's in the normal G minor key. right now it sounds like D minor against G minor and it really starts to clash sometimes. (Please know that i'm telling you this to help you. I hear a lot of talent out of this arrangement of yours. I don't give criticism to everyone).
Edit: And if anyone asks, yes, I realize i'm a huge music nerd. I do go to school for this afterall.
