Love this song bc it’s impossible not to smile when I hear it. Gorgeous talented Freddie… everyone loves Freddie … there’s just something about him all my girlfriends and I love 🥰 Millions of us crazy females out here just love Freddie That’s life 😂😂 Great reaction ✌🏼
In recent years I have fallen in love with this tune... that beautiful "When I'm not with you.." break with the gorgeous chords and resolutions.... and Brian's guitar solo is pure genius...
Great song and to me one of Brian's finest solos. It super supportive of the song character and extremely fun to listen to. And it's so hard to play. Great sound also.
This is the last vaudeville-type song that Freddie recorded and I wish it wasn't. It is so carefully crafted and yet bouncy and playful. I don't see it signaling "gay", but that's maybe because I'm older and there were more songs of this type in my early memories. Ditto for the band. I think you are learning to appreciate 'Queen-craft'. Thanks for the fun of watching it happen.
It wouldn't work if it was every song, but I think the ability to integrate these operetta and music hall influences into rock music was the key ingredient that set Queen apart, together with their detailed and imaginative productions. They weren't the first or only band to do this, but in Freddie they had the perfect performer for these kind of roles.
The song describes how a “good old-fashioned lover boy” is looking forward to a night of revelry & romance!! Totally Freddie, right? 🥰 The studio version lyric, “Hey boy where did you go?”, was sung by Mike Stone (English recording engineer & record producer, who also worked with KISS, Journey, & Asia). He died in 2002. Anyway, when performed live, Roger does the honors! 👍
Close my eyes and it's a bamy summer night in August 1977and the 14 year old me is 'camping out' with my mates in a tiny tent in my parents garden listening to this on a tiny casette player. It was the day Elvis died.
At 14 (as a freshman at an all-boy catholic high school) I was surrounded by insecure guys so I sometimes ended up 'defending' Queen as NOT gay. It didn't matter to me but Freddie said he was straight in interviews so I assumed he must have been. Also - how great is it to have such a unique sound like Brian.
Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy - by Mercury John Deacon: Bass Brian may: Backing vocals and electric guitar Freddie Mercury: Piano, lead and backing vocals Roger Taylor: Backing vocals, drums and percussion Mike Stone: co-lead vocals
Yes, Freddie had his very theatrical style of writing and Brian is the more intellectual style but he did come out with some real rockers. He was a rocker at heart, his solo work is proof of that. Roger was a rocker at heart but in later years he explored more in depth in writing styles and then John just the lighthearted romantic always writing upbeat happy tunes. Thanks for the reactions!
Well he did say they had characters. So he’s not necessarily portraying himself in every song or performance. I didn’t look at all the lyrics to the song but perhaps it could be interpreted either way.
At the moment John and Roger get one song each. That will change in the eighties, where they often have two each. Roger has two on the next couple as well.
True, and Freddie had to encourage the then shy (and last member to join) Deacon to write. Decades later they would become the first band to be inducted into the Songwriters 'Hall of Fame'. Amazing.
@Justin_Panariello Hearing this song (for the umpteenth time) I reminisce of the era of 'The Great Gatsby'... Gay, no, just a softer, fun type of flapper-era jazz
ha - at this time in Queen recordings, it WOULD be less frequent for the information to read 'this track is not enhanced with multi-harmonies, overdubs, or May's fantastic guitarwork'. Also, this song is one of my favorites. Very theatrical (what? Freddie being theatrical? Go figure) and upbeat and charming.
I love how fun this song is!! and I certainly get the vibe, but it also just has a type of sweetness to it that I think some innocent people might not translate over to one of sexuality. Very well put together song and yes I love the signature guitars in this one.
oh by the way i heard Queen a lot on College radio since one of the DJs was possessed by them, kidding. There were 15" speakers in the agora, that, was "The Radio" ( because nobody else in the school wanted to hear that! just kidding ) And, i think i realised that Queen had to do with the queens in the 90's which was funny but unimportant.Even David Bowie i didn't inquire about his whatevers. I thought it was Iman that sang "Slave to the rhythm" but it's Grace Jones
Freddie's vocals and harmonies, of course Brian just fantastic. Freddie being gay, IDK some of his friends said he Bisexual, some say he was gay, Freddie said he tried both sides and said he was Bisexual. Judging his lifestyle, maybe he was a hedonist. Who knows, only he did. But it doesn't matter anyways. He was a great talent we lost.
He dated Rose then Mary Only men aftetwards I dont think he ever claimed to be anything except yo one reporter who said so about you being bent He replied you crafty coe Im as gay as a dafodil John Reed claimed he told him he was gay when he told Freddie that he was gay But it was technically still with Mary but had met David
I think saying he was bisexual is to respect Mary And probably atleast earlier the band thinking the public/ fans would be more accepting than saying he was gay
Interesting point. Yes, it's weird. As an old Queen fan I can only say the 'gay' thing just never came up. Even if your non-Queen/pro-Zep friend was comparing 'who is best', it would never be used as a low blow/laugh. So ya, maybe it's because all we had was a weekly music rag to hear the latest news on any band. And even then I never read it.
Absolutely, your 2nd/3rd/4th fav entered discussions too. But if you're claiming there were no 'who is best' arguments back in mid 70's then I can't help you, maybe where you grew up. No internet, two channels on a b/w tv, you were never asked your fav/best film/tv show/album/single/band? You never had those discussions mid 70's?@@scottzappa9314
lol - it was a different time back then... yes, from 2024 it's obvious, but back then the word on the street was Freddie was "classically trained" so as to suspend disbelief that he might be gay when it came to songs like this one.. I'm embarassed to admit, I had no clue (because of the time), even though it's obvious from our 2024 perspective....

The tribute to the Marx brothers has to come to an end. Understandable. Yet so memorable.

The tone that Queen plays in is not equalled.
Great musicians,great production=great song
This is one of May's best solos, for sure. Very nice track, and again, you really have great pair of ears ! :) Cheers !
That Deacy Amp sure made the right sound for Queen❤❤

Top 5 on the album in for sure
Always fun for a listen.
Great tune. I had never heard it until recently. So much fun...

Musically very fun.
Es increíble 😊

great fun and another classic!

But but i think Iman was in one or some of Bowie's videos, maybe she did backing vocals
you know who made a great cover of "Life on Mars" ? Anggun
it's as good as their other songs but didn't get as much airplay because the DJs were embarrassed to present the song is my hypothesis

Yeah it's not a stretch to look at Freddie and not think "gay." Regardless of the song.
Interesting point.

It's pretty silly to argue about who is "best." There's quite a few other bands that enter that discussion.

Thats a harsh reply!
Teenagers always talk about new bands/ songs what type of music is better
Even adults do!
@@bluebell3720 I wouldn't say it's Harsh i'd say it's realistic.

He never kept it a secret just didn’t say it to the press. What for?
