Fun fact, as of uploading we record these like a week or two ahead so I'm almost done the book and it's really damn good; insane how different the story is though!
Imagine how hard it must have been to get the rights to all these references! Probably harder than it was for the people who made Who Framed Rodger Rabbit!
The next book, Ready Player Two...it's OKAY, the first 2/3rds of it are great...They are trying to make it for the 2nd movie, but its hard to adapt the book...
I wasn't prepared to like this movie, even with Spielberg doing it, because it was so different from the book. The book is one huge homage to all things 70's and 80's, especially games. It would have been impossible to film like the book and to pay for the rights for much of the content. I ended up overlooking the differences and respecting the story as a stand alone. Although, I really would have loved to see an adaptation on screen of the bit in the book from the arcade game Joust, which ate a bunch of my income in quarters at the mall.
The author of the book mentioned when he was writing it he was thinking a lot about Spielberg and once said that the only person who could make the movie was Spielberg because he would be the only one who had the juice to get as many tie ins as would be needed.... when he found out that Spielberg wanted to do it, he was incredulous. Spielberg said he tried to include other references as much as possible because he didn't want it to be seen as just about him.
I was born in 1971, and I gotta tell you, man, this movie seems like it was made just for me. I got every single reference. It's a love letter to gen X. We were primative little savages, but we were also on the cutting edge of technology. We had caveman context, but we also knew how cool shit was about to get. I remember having a conversation with my grandmother, and she told me she was born before television was invented. That blew my mind, because TV had always existed for me. But I was born before the internet was invented. And I can only imagine how shocking that must seem to people who had that shit their whole lives. I got your back, young people. Try and suck every second of joy out of life that you can. The next generation that comes along is gonna think you're just as lame as y'all think I am. Fist bump and good luck.
I was born in 1993 and I remember when computers were big and clunky. The first phone I remember we had was a wired home phone. Now phones can be computers and can get super thin and small, fitting into your pocket. We also have some robots doing basic tasks. I remember when I saw the Fly Board Air online and realized how fast technology was advancing. Even when I was a kid growing up in the 90s I never imagined I would live to see what we have now.
Heh. I remember my mom coming home from one of her frequent hospital visits, telling us about this great new invention she saw at the hospital, that could heat up a sandwich in 15 seconds, without the plate getting even warm -- i.e. a microwave oven. 😁
Yeah, pre-internet here too (hehe, that would be a good UID "Pre-Internet") and the thing that hit me like your grandmother and TV was my Grandmother was born the year the Wright Brothers flew. That put time and history into perspective to me. Kind of mind blowing. I like the way you put it "It's a love letter to gen X."
The book is even more nostalgia for us born in the 70s, you should check it out if you haven't yet. I'm happy the movie hits a lot more for the younger generations, but they kept plenty for older.
It's still so uncanny how that bedroom at the end looks like my bedroom or any one of my friends' rooms, from when we were kids. I just know, for instance, that there would be a stack of board games and puzzles in a small weirdly angled closet. And there would be a secret compartment in a window sill, or a floor board, or the wall, somewhere. And a box fan for the window in summer.
I would have preferred it if it was the Evangelion Unit 01. He throws up an AT field, blocks any attack. Unsheathes the Prog knife, dismembers the Mecha Godzilla. Even in a melee battle, the EVA wins.
@@atlasisshruggingOh man, i would lose my mind if Eva unit 01 would show up and beat Mecha Godzilla into the ground. Especially when unit 01 goes into berserk mode.

This was the one movie I saw in theaters that made me smile throughout the showing and all the way home. After seeing the SDCC ‘17 teaser, I got the book two days later and ended up going through it twice. Once for fun and the second to write down any movie and game references. Ended up with over 200+ movies because of it.

13:32 the distinction a lot of people forget is that you have to SEND IT into the wall, "as fast as we can, really put the pedal to the metal". People probably tried all sorts of things, including the back wall, but without risking every last coin you have in a potential wreck right at the start, it probably wouldnt have opened Either way, for as much of this movie is nostalgia bait and pop culture references, nobody imo is more deserving or could do it better than Speilberg
The best thing I would recommend is to watch this film again with someone who is Gen x. I've watched this movie a dozen times with my sons and I still point out things that they don't know what it is. The spell that they reference is from the movie Excalibur. One of my favorites.
Did you catch that the rifle Art3mis was using at the Distracted Globe was the M41A pulse rifle from Aliens? She also used the Lawgiver II pistol from Judge Dredd, and the Seburo Compact eXploder from Appleseed. The EM1 rail gun Aech was using on Planet Doom was the railgun from Eraser. Sorento also had the modified Taurus 85 from Firefly in a display in his office.
Im suprised no one has metioned that the spell to activate the orb of osuvox is the charm of making from the 1981 movie Excalibur....was a fave of mine growin up!
Spielberg insisted that they cut out a lot of the references to his movies in the book because he felt it would be weird and self-agrandizing. The book mostly has 80's pop culture references even though Hollaway died well into the 21st century and a lot of stuff became popular in the 90's until the 2020's, so there's a lot of more current references. They also cut out a lot of the D&D references for some reason, leaving a couple of Easter eggs you would have to sort of look for. Both the book and the movie are good. A lot of people used generic avatars because the better looking avatars were monetized. Wade had to use items he earned or looted during play. They had to pay or get permission from so many companies to use their IP and music.
I just noticed the irony of driving the DeLorean backwards in the race. That was exactly what Marty McFly did at the end of BTTF3. (And the beginning, as well. Come to think of it.)
The author of the book lives in Austin, TX just next door to my hometown. The Delorean in the book and the movie is an exact replica of the author’s real life car. You can even catch him driving around Austin in it.
There's a lot of references to catch for those who are familiar with the games and movies so featured. For instance, in that final battle alone there was the one I think you spotted: namely Master Chief and the Spartans from Halo. There's the Battletoads from Battletoads. I'm pretty sure that the weapon that iRok was using was the Boner from Shadows of the Damned, and the bladed weapon that Sho used to cut off iRok's arm before he could take that final shot? That would be the Glaive from the movie Krull. I'd recommend you guys watch it again to see what else you guys can spot and recognize when you don't have to worry about upsetting your audience by pausing too much or rewinding too often.
Definitely worth it to read the book. Different from the movie in many ways and, in my opinion, even better. There is also a sequel to the book -- Ready Player Two.
Loved the book, loved the movie. I think I lean to the book a bit more for the detail in story but I appreciate the visuals from the movie.... hust well done. I guess i should read the second one.
The book by Ernest Cline also has a sequel, Ready Player Two, and it is currently being developed for a film. Mark Rylance, who plays James Halliday, did two other films with Spielberg. His first role in The Bridge of Spies won Rylance the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and he then did the CG animated film The BFG with Spielberg. If you think there are a lot of pop culture references in the movie, double it (at least) in the novel. Ernest Cline wrote a screenplay before this one called Fanboys. It was about a group of friends trekking across the country to try and see Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace before it was released. It was a fun, low-budget movie starring Kristen Bell. It's funny you guys mentioned the Atari 2600 E.T. game, as Ernest Cline participated in the documentary movie about that game and the landfill it was supposedly taken to. The movie was Atari: Game Over. When Cline sold the novel, which almost immediately found itself in a bidding war for the movie rights, he celebrated his sudden wealth by buying a car. He bought a 1985 DeLorean DMC, which he then re-did to look like the Back to the Future time machine with a couple of other things, like a front red scanner like the KITT Trans Am from Knight Rider, and a siren like the Ghostbusters car. The plates for his DeLorean is ECTO 88. The car has been used for promotion for his stuff as well as his friends things like George R.R. Martin (author of the Game of Thrones books). He actually owns two DeLoreans now, but only one that is souped up to be the ultimate geek-mobile.
15:02 the borderlands thing, there can be a lot of good stuff, pistol that doesn't consume ammo, a robot that can become a ninja assassin and command a entire army, etc
As to the book I recommend it, since the movie deviated quite a bit due to restrictions with copyright. The book is also actual riddles you get to figure out along with Wade, and does not contain the race or the shining challenge. It has a lot more references to 80's (as well as older) games, music and movies.
The race wasn't just about going backwards, it was about doing it at absolute top speed with no regard for the chance of failure. In order to trigger the bypass you had to be heading at the wall fast enough to zero out if you did it wrong.
Yes, the book is good. Yes, there are a lot more references to older pop-culture in the book than in the movie. Also, Ernest Cline (the author) wrote another book that doesn't get enough love and that is Armada. Similar in a lot of ways, but still worth a read (and a movie...). I've not read it, but he did write a sequel to RP1. Unsurprisingly, it is entitled: Ready Player 2.
There's a channel called The Canadian Lad who watches movies and trailers at .25 speed and makes videos of every Easter Egg he finds. He's a real time-saver, you don't have to watch a movie multiple times yourself.
The book is more focused on 1980s pop culture, but does feature some 90s references. But the book is longer and drastically different from the film (in the book, Wade figures out the First Key Challenge. The Third Gate Challenge ends up taking place almost one year after Wade found the first key due to the challenges being more difficult than they are in the book. For the film, the condensed the timeframe to about a week's worth of time from first key found to final challenge), in addition to it being better.
This movie is the one that should be a high level end quest for reaction channels. After youve reacted to all the 80s music, and all the 80s movies, and old 80s video games, and done a rewatch on The Shining.......... Then, you're ready.
I love this movie. I know nothing about gaming, but I did recognize all the characters who showed up. I love the Iron Giant so was especially happy with his inclusion.
I listen to the audiobook of this last year. It has way more references in the book, I honestly didn’t wanna stop listening. I saw the movie when it came out and I’m glad I read the book. There is a ready player to book. I just haven’t started it yet.
The book was really good. the contests were different and you had to act out certain movies to finish each challenge. Wade was the one sent to the loyalty center but he did it on purpose so that he could get into IOI's Network and steal all their info. Great book.
Now that you guys have watched this movie with so many games and characters references, you guys should watch “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988), which had the most cartoon characters in one movie. That’s a classic and iconic film😊
I think this movie would’ve got more attention if it wasn’t released just before Infinity War. There was so much hype and anticipation that every other movie just felt like something in the way.
This movie is one of the few instances I think I would have been okay with splitting the book into multiple movies. There was SO MUCH cut that I feel like I’m missing a lot (but those that haven’t read it probably don’t feel like this!)
The book has the same general plot as the movie, but has different nerdy references, like D&D and Monty Python. :D Also, Wade is a high school kid and there's a fair amount of school-related stuff.
This is one of the few times where I like both the movie and the book. There are quite a few differences and the book focuses more on 70-80s references. I've read it a couple of times. I describe it as a junk food book.
Oh, don't worry... the book has all different kinds of references. In fact it's a good read even if you see the movie, as it's challenges are completely different. (The challenges work in book form, but wouldn't translate well visually for a movie) There's also a sequel book which is pretty fun as well. That cool spinny frisby thing you both wooed at is the Glaive, the signature weapon of the movie Krull. If anyone out there ain't seen Krull, you should. Truly a great popcorn epic... turn off your brain and embrace the weirdness.
I've told you once before, but I'll say it again. You are the best at reacting to movies. And that's why I have a suggestion for your next reaction. It's called "America: The motion picture". Although it is an animated film, it is about the War of Independence of the United States and is made as a comedy/parody. An animated film full of incorrect humor often related to US history. For example, there you will find out what is behind the real origin of Uncle Sam. I think you'll get a lot of laughs out of it.
The book definitely has those references lol in the movie, they can put more visuals in the background, whereas on the page, you can only fit so much in the words, so there might not be AS MANY references to pop culture, but they are just as prevalent and around in the book, and are just as important to the story. The book is a super easy, quick read and lots of fun. I wanna check out the author's other books, but I never have yet. Book is long but not very. I had a mass market paperback, so idk how many pages exactly, but it is a THICK boy as a MMP. And the story is rather quick moving, just like in the movie. I honestly think it is just the author's style. I wish there was more substance in the story/world, but it is a easy and fun bop, so to speak, if you dont wanna take something too seriously.
Movie made for folk who grew up between 1970 n 1990. I'm 84, so I can get the 90s references n grew up wit classics before me. They say they wanna make a sequel, where it's all post 2000 stuff. I'll get it, just don't know if it's a sequel worthwhile.
The book, at least the first one, is really good. The main quests are different, I think to make the movie appeal to a broader audience. The actress who played Artemis is now playing Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon.
The book has more references than the movie. But then again the book has enough time to go through it, while the movie had to cram in a lot into a regular runtime. The book and the movie could be almost considered entirely different because of the entirely different story telling. It is worth a shot, but be prepared for reference overload. In terms of the that overload, it has the purpose of making you feel like the clues could be anywhere and anything.
Fun fact, as of uploading we record these like a week or two ahead so I'm almost done the book and it's really damn good; insane how different the story is though!
Imagine how hard it must have been to get the rights to all these references!

@@nutdoughThat’s a mighty generous opinion of the second book. I thought it was terrible.

Producers: Just how many pop culture references do you want?
Spielberg: Yes.
the book had many more pop references then the movie, in fact both books did.
No one has ever counted them all and no official number has been released.
Funnily enough it's actually the other way around. Spielberg didn't want many references to himself but the producers did.
THIS is the kind of movie you have to watch multiple times to know how many references there actually are!
AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!!!
And you still won't quite get them all.
Something most people don't notice about his car is that it's not just a DeLorean, it's also loaded with a K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider.

You guys need to watch Dude, Where's My Car
Omg yes
'Seeing a Gundam and Iron Giant fight Mechagodzilla was awesome!' So, have you seen Pacific Rim? A movie that really didn't need a plot....
As to the book I recommend it, since the movie deviated quite a bit due to restrictions with copyright. The book is also actual riddles you get to figure out along with Wade, and does not contain the race or the shining challenge. It has a lot more references to 80's (as well as older) games, music and movies.
The book is a real page turner. There is a second book "Ready Player Two"
The race wasn't just about going backwards, it was about doing it at absolute top speed with no regard for the chance of failure. In order to trigger the bypass you had to be heading at the wall fast enough to zero out if you did it wrong.
LOL I love y'all reaction to the Gundam. The uproar in the theater that night was insane! 😂
Unsurprisingly, it is entitled: Ready Player 2.
ready player 2 was really not that good.
Loved the first book! I read the second book, but remember being disappointed. I don't remember anything about it.
The book has soooooo much more than the movie its amazing.
This is possibly the most kick ass movie ever
Good movie went straight into my steelbook collection
This movie is the one that should be a high level end quest for reaction channels. After youve reacted to all the 80s music, and all the 80s movies, and old 80s video games, and done a rewatch on The Shining.......... Then, you're ready.
I love this movie. I know nothing about gaming, but I did recognize all the characters who showed up. I love the Iron Giant so was especially happy with his inclusion.
From what I've heard there are more than 800 easter eggs and references in the entire movie, You can watch it a 10th time and still find something new
I listen to the audiobook of this last year. It has way more references in the book, I honestly didn’t wanna stop listening. I saw the movie when it came out and I’m glad I read the book. There is a ready player to book. I just haven’t started it yet.
And I just read your comment about reading the book so, you know!!
The book was really good. the contests were different and you had to act out certain movies to finish each challenge. Wade was the one sent to the loyalty center but he did it on purpose so that he could get into IOI's Network and steal all their info. Great book.
This one really took me by surprise. When this movie came out I thought it was gonna be lame. It was actually surprisingly really good.
Now that you guys have watched this movie with so many games and characters references, you guys should watch “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988), which had the most cartoon characters in one movie. That’s a classic and iconic film😊
glad yall left the video longer for this one
I think this movie would’ve got more attention if it wasn’t released just before Infinity War. There was so much hype and anticipation that every other movie just felt like something in the way.
Yeah this is based on the first book, there was a sequel called "Ready Player Two" but most people don't think it was as good.
Love this movie, worthy of multiple viewings.
Saw this in theatres, was basically one big game of I Spy lol
Ayyy yoooo VR and references galore!
I'm Soooo happy you guys watched this but god knows what they will do for a number two also Curtis where did you get that shirt I love it lol 😂
This movie is one of the few instances I think I would have been okay with splitting the book into multiple movies. There was SO MUCH cut that I feel like I’m missing a lot (but those that haven’t read it probably don’t feel like this!)
I loved this movie so much! Really wish we had a sequel 😮💨
This movie is one of my favourite video game movies
The book has the same general plot as the movie, but has different nerdy references, like D&D and Monty Python. :D Also, Wade is a high school kid and there's a fair amount of school-related stuff.
This is one of the few times where I like both the movie and the book. There are quite a few differences and the book focuses more on 70-80s references. I've read it a couple of times. I describe it as a junk food book.
agree, I enjoyed both the book and the movie! I didn't like the second book. I actually don't even remember why 🤔
I never read Ready Player Two. I heard meh things though.
The book has even more references
A lot couldn’t be crammed into the film, plus getting the license for them
Oh, don't worry... the book has all different kinds of references.
If this is what VR will be like in the future then I'll be interested
