Desert Combat was so successful that it spawned its own mods. Basically a mod of a mod. Such as Desert Combat Extended (DCX) which I created in late 2003. By 2005 the inventory of vehicles and other weapons had more than doubled. There were over 100 maps that could be played online and in single player as well. The British army was brought in. We had boats and submarines as well. Want to launch a guided Tomahawk missile from a Los Angeles class sub? No problem! And it had a fair share of easter eggs. Thank you Desert Combat for paving the way for us modders to push your mod even further.
@Andrew Harnaman I did get offers but turned them down. The gaming industry at the time wasn't stable. Small developers came and went. I stayed in my software engineering job instead.
Desert Combat was, for me, the pinnacle of the Battlefield series. In many ways I believe it is the grandfather of more modern tactical shooters such as Squad. And I also think the music fit the game perfectly.
Well, BF42: DC mod paved the way for BF2. Then BF2 paved the way for BF2: Project Reality mod and that mod made Squad possible so, Desert Combat is, undirectly, responsable for the release of Squad.
Agreed. Personally whilst some might like the more realistic nature of locking targets, I enjoyed the skill of aiming. Like back then I was tracking Apache missiles as I was firing them so I can adjust my lead according based on which side of the vehicle the next missile was coming from. We had tankers who were expert anti air. You could just about roll a ac130 and have people run a loop of the fuselage, and pilots who could jump out fire a stinger, then catch their own plane and take it back over and continue to dogfight. Ground combat was alright, fun for the time but man DC vehicles was the best and BFV and BF2 cannot touch it. Same with later games where all this unlocking malarkey started.
OH MAN! Good times, I had a clan back then Marine Expeditionary Forces... later Desert Knights. Mastering the helicopter was my proudest moment and managing to shoot down a Mirage while looping and it flew over me...the best.
It is important no note that recently EA treat the revive community for BF2 and BF2142 that was trying to make a dedicated master server for players to play those old games.
im not sure what you're trying to say, EA is supporting the revival community? Remember they were the ones that threatened legal action against anyone who had kept the bf2 servers up and running after gamespy shut down.
Can you please do an episode for BattleGroup42 and it's history including it's equivalent in Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 2 (BattleGroup42: Pacific and BattleGroup Frontlines)? It was one of the oldest and currently active World war II mod for Battlefield 1942 and started between February and March 2003, I think it was the MOST UNDERRATED mod for Battlefield 1942 and at the same time I felt that it should deserve more attention than it currently receive and during it's existence!
Nice video, but you're wrong about DC being the first mod to implement helicopters. Back in the early BF1942 modding days (before the official mod toolkit was even released) there was a lot of experimental modding. One of these mods was called kubelcopters (which I can barely find any mention of online anymore). It took the kubelwagen and added helicopter controls and missiles. It was notoriously hard to control, but as far as I remember, this code was the basis for Desert Combat's first implementation of the Apache, which flew like an absolute brick.
2:16 I thought the first instance of helicopters in Battlefield was with the Flettner Helicopter in the Secret Weapons of WW2 Expansion. Pretty sure helis couldn't have been implemented in 1942 without that.
Nice Video, I'm really happy, that you mentioned this mod and how important it is to understand battlefields history. Am I wrong or did it take month back in the day to fly DC helicopters properly?
I recall the helicopter flight models were done by, or at least consulted from a pilot. They were coded to be as realistic as was possible for the time. I spent probably 50 hours just practicing offline before flying in matches and I became one of the best Hind pilots on the servers I played, fond memories.
They were difficult for sure. But once you got the hang of the fact there's no auto throttle, so if you stop tapping W the engine revs down and you lose altitude, they were really good. This meant you could use it to your advantage and do some damn awesome maneuvers if you knew how. I was really the only one of my friends who picked it up. I became the designated helicopter pilot. Loved the Apache and having one of my mates as gunner supporting our other friends on the ground.
There was a mod made for BF2, while not having the long term impact of Project Reality mod still deserves a mention. There was the mod "Desert Conflict" aka DCON. It was a RECREATION of Desert Combat mod but for BF2. At the time of BF2, Desert Combat was still a game that was still unique and fresh in players minds but needed to be brought up to the present because when new games are released in a franchise you will often suffer from the large migration of the old community to the new game. The migration from the BF1942 community to the new BF2 community was huge. Ultimately, it was a great mod but suffered from over promises by the team and poor pr management.
This was probably the peak of gaming for me. I was in the clan Mafia Nation and we absolutely dominated for a long time. Anyone else out there happen to compete in TWL or CAL?
Yes. DC is what started at all for us. Competed at TWL with Stars & Bars and I later became a competition director at TWL. Went by Clayman back then. Good times!
2:33 It`s Iraqi Tabuk, not SVD. Also, I thought that the first heli was the Kolibri from Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII (Raid on Agheila map)
damn wish i was here earlier , there's a map with a german heli and if i'm not mistaken it's in the secret weps of wwii and it's an only multiplayer map so no ai as far as i am aware , so the desert combat mod wasn't the one to add helicopters to the bf1942 gameplay
I'm glad you mentioned Desert Combat It was a huge thing back then , I played in many clans and we competed in many leagues . the Stronger than all league, CAL , (cyber athletic league) what happened to CAL there's no m ore ladders to join ?
Man, the helicopters were difficult to pilot! I remember practicing flying at targets sideways so the shooters in the Blackhawk could shoot at their targets.
I dont understand just how stupid these big corporations are? How do they not realise that there are people out there who purchase the original product merely for mods? Project Reality mod was the decising factor for me to purchase Battlefield 2, Desert Combat got me to buy BF1942. These games lived SO FAR WAY THEIR EXPECTED LIFE SPAN ----ONLY--- thanks to these mods. They kept the games that should've been long dead alive to this day. Battlefield 3 is so soul-less and boring and you just stop playing after a week. Half a year later, the game was already old news and there are were no incentives to buy it. Had they not destroyed their modding scene, people would've made mods for it that would have probably kept people purchasing Battlefield 3 to this day.
Good souvenirs, i was ''LeDog'' in the ''QUE'' Team, Quebec Unknown Executioners. We used to terrorize American player with our raw symbiotic team play.
RavenKStudios i know i had some edits of my own,im just saying i personaly whuld be happier if he made a longer video every like 3-4 weeks or even a month than a 6-min vid like this,i have noting against this and i personaly know how hard it is too make videos while also having a personal life, thats on of the reasons i never made vids of my own,and i totally understand him,i dont have anything against him and im not a hater,do you get my point? I want to say he shuld take a beak and make a vid when he really has some time for his personal and social life
im loving your channel and gotta say, I thought dice was a nice company that got corrupted, but i was wrong... They were already fucking it up from the beginning. Sad. At leat BF was nice until bad company
Bro how people can play battlefield nowadays, Desert combat and bf2 was the best time for gamers. Today people have more technology, knowledge and money but deliver beta games, and people copy beta games like bf 2042/Delta force. How many hours on cyber cafe to play this mode and so many good players on that time, i remember you could use that annoying f1 radio and people help. Today if you get shot or your ammo empty the autistic player on your side wont help. Gamers from today grown up playing cod on console and now they are adults farming cammos ahahah sad future. We still have good games like arma 3 and insurgency sandstorm but i miss players from that time. No cosmetics just the game,
Fun fact: is EA is so garbage, that after the dissolution of Trauma Studios, they made sure in their contract they wouldn't get any royalties for BF2, these poor modders literaly made the BF franchise what it is today and yet, were given nothing in return. Bismarck aka Bizzle here ;) . Miss DC, DCX, and Rising Conflicts. Not to mention all the old IRC chans and Teamspeak. Good times!
Damn remember that mod. Was fantastic.
Zeuser?!?
@christian Lanctot out of interest did it ope up job opportunities and did you go into games design as a job ?
@Andrew Harnaman I did get offers but turned them down. The gaming industry at the time wasn't stable. Small developers came and went. I stayed in my software engineering job instead.

When EA removed mod support they really lost what made them special.
OH MAN! Good times, I had a clan back then Marine Expeditionary Forces... later Desert Knights.
Mastering the helicopter was my proudest moment and managing to shoot down a Mirage while looping and it flew over me...the best.
The best version of the game, spend so many ours with my clan on this mod. It was simply amazing .
looking at this mod it's like bf3 before it came out. So much stuff in one single map
It is important no note that recently EA treat the revive community for BF2 and BF2142 that was trying to make a dedicated master server for players to play those old games.
People are still playing BF2142? That was a game i would like to play but think it's already to old.
Das Institut yes i played it online last night with real players
im not sure what you're trying to say, EA is supporting the revival community? Remember they were the ones that threatened legal action against anyone who had kept the bf2 servers up and running after gamespy shut down.
Didn't know about this game. Favourite elements of the series in here.
Many fun vehicle to play with but Shilka and the self propelled artillery was my favorites.
The machine-gun pickup is called a Technical.
HAHA! I remember the music that played when you got in it!
God damnit I really miss Desert Combat (and DCX), I wish they were playable on windows 10
With community made patch the game runs fine on Windows 10

But Secret Weapons of WW2 came out after Desert Combat.
@@Hornet135 seems like they came out roughly in the same year so im not sure

im pretty sure there was a helicopter in the secret weapons of ww2 expansion. idk if it was before or after the mod tho. I also never owned/played it.
DC still works online! Hit me up for details if you want to play it
Chris B yes please
That was a MIG-29 not a 21 and the american Pistol is a M9 not a M6
DerMetzFetz lol i was like wtf
DerMetzFetz u for got the ‘pmk’
and AK, NOT a "ak-47"
DC was so influential for Battlefield that people were buying 1942 just to play this mod.
There was a mod made for BF2, while not having the long term impact of Project Reality mod still deserves a mention. There was the mod "Desert Conflict" aka DCON. I fucking loved playing this mod back in the day, i feel sad and nostalgic thinking about it.
The latest DC version is not 0.7, but DC Final
Sehr schönes video
Desert Combat was SO GOOD
This was probably the peak of gaming for me. I was in the clan Mafia Nation and we absolutely dominated for a long time. Anyone else out there happen to compete in TWL or CAL?

Desert Combat was released long before Secret Weapons was.
Is the outro music the menu music?

I do in fact know that there will be helicopters in the upcoming battlefield. A blackhawk to be specific, but the sound could be used for any heli.
I'm glad you mentioned Desert Combat
It was a huge thing back then ,
I played in many clans
and we competed in many leagues .
the Stronger than all league,
CAL , (cyber athletic league)
what happened to CAL there's no m ore ladders to join ?
Man, the helicopters were difficult to pilot! I remember practicing flying at targets sideways so the shooters in the Blackhawk could shoot at their targets.
DC was fking awesome. I think I once played that game for almost 18 hours straight. It was just that amazing, the Apache and Abrams were my favorite.
it was just as well the load screen music was fantastic as it took forever to load
Do an episode on the BF1942 mod, Forgotten Hope
I dont understand just how stupid these big corporations are? How do they not realise that there are people out there who purchase the original product merely for mods? battlefield 2 was the last battlefield the mods made great games from it. now its a acade shitshow
First Strike mod for Battlefield 2142 was a ton of fun if not overshadowed by the more popular mods for Battlefield 2 and BF2 itself.
