- A slight change from my 2 stroke videos. I needed to fix an issue on my Super Duke. I was getting a critical error on my dash and noticed the oil temp was zero degrees. This video just goes through diagnosing the issue as well as how to test some electrical connections on the bike. I hope it helps other Super Duke riders.
Update: Here I try and repair/breakdown the sensor • KTM 1290 Superduke 201...
00:31 Part number needed
00:56 Removing the sensor
02:45 How to read wiring on bike and compare it to the manual
04:50 Testing the faulty sensor
08:00 Testing with a potentiometer the Central Control Unit is functioning OK
13:42 Simple continuity testing
16:55 Testing voltage on CAN Bus system
19:30 Installing new Oil Sensor
22:06 Final testing.
Thanks for the video. I had the same problem with oil temp was 0 when I start the bike. I soldered 4 resistors 10K. Now bike starts with 20C temp and no error coming up. "KTM 1290 s 2017". Cheers.
Awesome glad it helped out.
Thank you for this video!
My SAR2021 just started showing MTC cruise control warning.
The warning shows up exactly when oil temp suddenly mid ride goes to - - - .
Also noticed that the oil temp is 0 Celsius degrees while it’s 25 Celsius outside.
Hopefully the shop will find the issue.
Thanks for taking the time on this video. Much appreciated!
Very helpful. Thanks mate. Part ordered
Wow awesome video!!! really thorough, I have an issue foult on my oil temp sensor too of my KTM 1290 Adv S, I once cleaned the connection and since that it is now measuring half the temperature (50C instead of 100) so it starts at 0C and goes up to 40-50C... but I still had the temperature of the coolant... Ive postponed buying a new sensor... I really liked your video, thanks for sharing... greetings from Valle de Bravo, Mexico
Hi thanks for the feedback, not much we can do to repair it, only replace it. But alas for me the new one I put in has also started to fail, reading temps of 0 deg C at startup when the air temp is 22 deg. Does not seem to impact the performance but who knows if the electronics is changing the fueling based on the temp it is seeing. One day I might try and put in a "car" oil temp sensor and see if that is more reliable and cheaper, if I can get it to fit and calibrate it.
@@powervalvepetesgarage Sorry to hear that!! I was kind of hesitant to buy a new one, seing how easily mine had stopped working properly and I think I had read other mates on the advrider having similar problems... Your idea of installing an independant oil sensor and it would also be a good idea to put a oil pressure (PSI)...
I've been living with the GENERAL FAILURE warning for a year, the bike runs perfectly fine, but I hate the check engine light. I finally broke down and took it to the KTM dealership and they told me it's the OIL TEMP SENSOR. I couldn't connect the dots until I saw this video! The diagnostic and new sensor install will be $550-600 US. The part is back ordered until July 2022.
It's really a 20 min job. $260 AUD but like everywhere I suspect there is no stock. At least you can ride it till it arrives. Part Number

Thanks for your great video. Same Problem here and know what do do now. Buy a new sensor. 🙄
Can you tell me more about your dongle. Can you switch msc on and off ? Saw a little switch beside the speedo.
Well spotted but no, that is for usb charger. One ACC circuit turns off when the ignition is off but the other one is always on. So I put a switch inline to manually isolate it. I do have a dongle that remembers settings for MTC etc so you don't need to keep changing settings.
Hi, great video, i'm getting this issue and i've just ordered the new oil sensor. Did you have to remove the whole tank to get to where the connector is? Thanks
No you should be able to reach from the side. Just need to cut some zip ties.
Helpful video. I have a Gen 2 GT. Having running problems where the bike will feel like it’s running out of fuel real quick when accelerating or riding up hill when this intermittent fault occurs. It does conk out if you “keep going”. I’ve noticed during riding, ambient temperatures of 25C the Oil Temp is reading no more than 52C at its peak. Is this normal engine temperatures?
Sounds a bit low as mine hovers around the 85deg C mark and ambient is in the 20's. So possibly the oil temp is on the way out. BUT I don't think it would impact starving the engine. Even when the oild temp sensor broke the bike ran fine. The other issues I had was dieng battery caused bike to run rough. Also valves clearances too tight.
Yes... The engine management can do that... My third faulty sensor read extremely low (like 40°C less). The ECU thinks the engine is cold, so it injects more fuel... The bike was horrible to drive
Hey. Thanks For great video! I was wondering could that failed Temp sensor cause that bike dont start?
I don't think it would. I'll test it later this week by disconnecting it and seeing if it'll start.
Hey bud. Fantastic video. I'm having general failure issues on my 2017 SDR. I identified the oil temp sensor as it was fluctuating wildly and was reading extremely high on cold startup in the OSD. I don't suppose you ever did take the old one apart to see what was inside?
OK will undo the small allen key at the bottom of the pipe and see what I can find, Ill post a quick video if anything looks possible to fix.
@@zxspectum cheers bud. Look forward to seeing what you think
Hey Peter, did your engine light come on when your oil temp sensor malfunctioned?
@@604G1K hi from memory no just an orange malfunction light. There was no indication what the error was. Just by chance I saw the temp was very low like 5 deg or something like that.
Mine has started reading the wrong oil temperature recently. It never seems to go very high maybe 130 degrees Fahrenheit at the most. My question is, is replacing this part really critical? Bike runs fine without it. Does the bike use the signal from the oil temperature sensor for anything? The fans kick on bases on the thermostat not the oil temp sensor.
Good point. I didn't notice any difference in engine characteristics. Also it doubles up as oil level warning. But that is a separate circuit. From memory it's connected to engine management so possibly it's thinking engine is running to hot or too cold and provide a different feul map. That said it might just look at water temp. But I would not know for sure.
Nice Video. I have a 2019 ktm super adventure S model, in dashboard is always turn on the check engine light and general failure. The mecanic told me that i was a problem of de oil temp sensor, so i bougth a new one, they instaled but the problem don´t go away, i don´t know why. i don´t know how to fix it
Hi, are you getting normal oil temps. So when its cold it shows current room temp? If yes then its another fault. Take it to a genuine KTM dealer and they should be able to plug in diagnostic computer which should tell exactly what the fault is.
I also have a 2019 SAS, and have been getting a “General Failure” warning for about a year now. I thought it was because of my heated gear throwing off the voltage, but it’s still throwing the code.
Separately, I’ve noticed that the oil temp isn’t registering for a while as well, it just reads 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s interesting to see that both issues are probably related!
mine is broken too..reads ---
I dont bother to install a new one but i would like the error to disappear..If i put a resistor to fool the ecu to read a specific temp all the time you think will work?Do i need to put the resistor inline or parallel ? what kind of resistor to use?
Thanks a lot
Hi I think 2K ohm resistor might be a good starting point. Check out at 10:37 mins in the video. And put it across the plug as shown at 8:16. Good luck!
@@powervalvepetesgarage thanks a lot for the answer..with the plug connected i need to cut the silver/yellow cable and put the resistor in between, right?
@@foten21GR yes the silver middle wire, just twist the wire onto a 2.8K ohm resistor or there about inline and it should read about 25 degrees, you can experiment with slightly high/lower resistance. Once you found a good one, slip on some heat shrink, solder it in place.
just started to have issues with oil temp sensor on my 2015 1190r adventure. Temperature readings on cold engine jumping up & down and once the engine is warm I'm getting constantly 149 C temperature, then General Failure error and bike goes into safety mode (engine power down)
Hi I wonder if due to it thinking its a high temp it forces it to shut down, where mine was reading it was cold, eg zero degrees so no damage to the engine is possible. Try unplugging it and see if it runs? But in any case you will need to order one. Simple job to replace.
Well mine has just broken again showing a constant 68 degress C regardless of being just turned off or after a run. I asked if it could be replaced under warranty from where I bought it, they said it would need to be sent back. So I am looking to make one from a standard oil/coolant sensor so stay tune for that.
I'm tired of buying one of this sensors every year in my '17 Gt
First one dropped the error code on the dashboard. The last one just doesn't send the correct temperature, but 30°C more.
I'm going to rip one of the broken ones to see whats wrong with them.
Have a look at my other video, I did the same its pretty much not possible you would need I think make up a new oil temp sensor from parts online than repair ua-cam.com/video/NefgwsB7RZA/v-deo.html
@@powervalvepetesgarage ohh... Thanks a lot...
So I have to buy a new sensor every 3000/4000 miles... Bad news
Definitely sounds like a recall issue. I’m kicking myself for not making the dealer look into it harder when my 2019 SAS was still under warranty.
I really can’t believe that after 5 model years, it’s still having the same issues.
Well, I'm officially in my fourth broken sensor (plus the OEM). Last one is done in just 2 months... I'm not going to buy a fifth one...
