What Did Our Bees Think Of That Partial Solar Eclipse?

Well the question has been answered. Lots of people were geared up and ready to find out what bees do during a solar eclipse. We saw a partial eclipse in our state and it had very little if any effect on the behavior of honey bees and bumble bees. We also got to see that the love bugs weren't bothered by it when they bellied up to the bar, as it were, drinking some sugar syrup next to some bees.
One good thing came out of all the excitement today. I got to do bee stuff most of the day instead of working. I also found a bunch of video footage I had lost on the SD card in my Brinno camera. I hope the rest of you had as good a day as I did.
Also, dad was happy to participate for the video. He is doing better but had another shoulder surgery in a week or so. I show him all the comments and well wishes. It brings a smile.

I watched the eclipse this afternoon for hours on TV, then I realized my TV wasn't even turned on. I thought it ran a little long.
So nice to see your dad up and about.
I hope you got a nap while you were there. Shame to waste a good eclipse. Reminds me of David Puddy on Seinfeld just sitting staring at nothing. lol
628DirtRooster Strange enough, the view was entirely the same. 🌑
LOL
Way of Life Clothing Co---"No smoke, No suit, No problems" 🤔
I am faccinated with yr love towards the bees. You publish before the Eclipse and after the Eclipse. .
Thank you very much..
Shame we didn't see much unusual here.
During the height of the eclipse at my location, the sky became almost completely overcast. Whenever it's announced that some spectacular and rare astronomical event is about to occur, I can be sure of rain, overcast skies, ... Never fails.
2nd this! YES!
I have the same kind of luck. Keeps me out of the casinos.
Been by one but never been in one. $$ comes too hard to go up against a stacked deck. Or any deck.
Don't want to thumbs up this, but dang, that stinks. UA-cam needs a "Sorry for that." button...
The Tube works just like government, not like real people. They're never wrong.
Bright spot of the video was seeing your Dad! I pray for continued health for all of you!!!
Very much appreciated Brian.
Id love to have known how many people didn't pick that up as a joke if it wasn't pointed out. You executed it well!
You would have found out in the comments. That's why I put in the text. No time for all the comments I would have gotten from that. :)
Howdy from Texas DirtRooster. I really enjoy your videos and hope there are many more to come. You have made me want to start keeping honey bees. Looks like a hobby I could really enjoy. ( now to gather a few hundred dollars. and find some bees.) thanks for the videos
I sub almost 1 month ago & I've really enjoyed all your videos! We need more bee keepers around! My best wishes for your father and a fast recovery on the surgery! :)
Nice Shirt! We were blocked by clouds also... Taking an eye chart to the bee yard today, hope mine listened lol
I make that shirt look good. ;)
Can't argue that!
You are so fun to listen to !! Nice jokes! My wife gets a kick out of your videos, she love to witch them with me! Thanks for sharing!!
Your old man is a treasure. Hope his surgery went well. Love your videos...and have learned a so much from them. Am seriously considering starting hobby bee-keeping next year...trying to figure out if I can incorporate it into my way of life.
That was clever putting the black butterfly in at the beginning.
Ohhh yeah the Love Bugs! How I DON'T miss them!
Natures paint job destroyers.
"These are love bugs, I'll let you guess why" hah!
Did you know that a bee has 5 eyes! The three ocelli are simple eyes that discern light intensity, while each of the two large compound eyes contains about 6,900 facets and is well suited for detecting movement.
So as long as they don't stare at it with there ocelli they will bee fine.
Snowball րհilօძεղძɾօղ Interesting!
Yep, Very complex little creatures.
628DirtRooster on September 23th 2017 something is going to happen next month the rapture
628DirtRooster what you saw was Jesus has come in the Earth again and to save he's people who die in the Under ground and it says from the bible it's status the chapter called Acts chaper 2:9 it said the coming if the holy Spirit ok 628DirtRooster
Can't put a date on it bro. Matthew 24:36 says "no one knows the day or the hour not even the angels but only the father".
It is so good to see your dad! Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Nice job on recording the bees through the eclipse... You didn't even have the 'snakes in the box' issue that Horchoff did. :-)
Ge got me with that stupid box a few weeks ago.
ur my new addiction =) . ive always been scared of bees and had a phobia of them but over the last few years ive noticed its only how the sound and ive binged watched almost all of ur videos. ( time to watch this video now )
I usually don't post any comment but decided I had better today--Want to commend you on your many talents for teaching and handling the camera and the bees--not many can do all these jobs and do it well--My hat is off to you young man!!!! Keep it up!
Thanks a lot Mr. Jones. I have fun doing these videos.
I noticed the bees feeding off the yucca plants when I was out walking the other day!!
Velma Jinkys
I have a very large house plant that is a yucca, 1 year bees got in and where all over it, they weren't on any of my other plants, not even the small yucca's.
At that time I should have had a green house I had around 90 some plants.
we once found a abandoned hive/comb hanging from a tree branch in the open. Seemed very unusual as it was out in the open about 2ft/1ft
Open air colonies are unusual.
Looks like the solar eclipse did have an effect on your dad... He went on camera!
Hope he's doing well.
He thought there was going to be free candy.
Ha ha ha! You sure did piss her off. She said, "oh! you gonna flick me off your arm are ya? Well I'll just go and sting your camera!" 5:02 BZZzzZZzzZZzzz!
She was highly insulted.
Hey, man. I don't know how I got here, but I ended up watching your videos for 4 hours yesterday. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for all the views.
My bees went crazy, I have 16 hives in Nashville. Leading up to it, bees were running into me and pouring in. During the complete dark (3 mins) huge clouds flew around, putting out a weird smell, not swarm phermone. It was all amazing!
That's wild!
I'm so glad you made it clear that you were joking about the bees staring at the sun and going blind! I thought I was going to lose sleep about how many little white canes you were going to have to fashion! 😋
I'd give them candy canes.
awesome!
Great video and scientific observation. Thanks!
Thanks Michael
Love your videos, Randy. I've pretty much binged at least 100 of them over the last few days, subscribed and everything. I've noticed your volume balance between your voice and the music is a little off (I often have to the turn volume all the way up to hear you talk, but turn it all the way down when the music starts playing because it's so loud). Would it be possible to fix the volume difference between you talking and when the music plays?
NICE TITLE, very refreshing content !
Thanks so much Purple Haze.
Please give your Dad my love, I'm thinking of him. Surgery is no fun at any age, but it's hard to bounce back as you get older. I take it the surgeries are helping him at least?
Honey bees with ~57 days of life, this would be a once-in-a-lifetime "Hey Ethel !!!! Cool, ... Now git bak 2 work !"
They were thinking "Great! This just robbed us out of one of the precious few hours we have left." lol
Your dad was looking pretty good Bro!
Love the welding helmet...LOL
He's feeling OK today. My brother took him and is gone to the docks to look for shrimp.
I traveled to right outside of Hopkinsville ky where it was the best spot to view it in the US and it never went pitch black. But it went dark enough to turn on all the lights. At all times looking up you still could see a ring.
I hate we missed that. Never have that chance on our continent again.
I heard there'll be another one in 2024!
is correct. April 8, mark your calendar and tell your bees to get ready!
@@628DirtRooster As other have stated, there is another total eclipse that passes through the US. A web search will show you the path of totality as well as other information. There are not many that will be visible this century.
People here in the Pacific Northwest have been fortunate. There have been two total eclipses that have crossed at least part of Oregon in the last 50 years.
Jeff horcoff had a major reaction with one of his hives!!!
wow, what a bunch of unappreciated bees you have there. you would think they would of all came out to view it knowing it's a once in a lifetime event for them.
Like sleeping through the first Star Wars movie.
I guess you weren't sharing the welding hood enough. Should of invited some to join you inside of it.
We had the total eclipse here in Oregon and I don't know about Bees, but as soon as it started getting dark the birds went crazy.
Must have confused them.
No smoke, no suit and no problems....I hear lyrics in there somewhere. 😄 Thanks for the science experiment.
Maybe Dwight Yoakam could sing it.
Oregon here, my bees went into the hive for the peak but were back out in less than an hour.
Time for a nap
I am also in Oregon, and was almost on the center-line of totality. The bees did nothing unusual at all.
Now that is an old time welders helmet right there, you could look at the sun all day long out of it. Mine isn't shaded that dark.
I went over to look at my bees during the hight of the eclipse, no diff here in Winder Ga, they looked happy just to be workin! It didn't go pitch black here either.
That old shield is probably 30 years old or more.
It does not go "pitch black" anywhere. The only way it would be able to come close would be if the total eclipse shadow covered all the Earth, which it never does. For this eclipse, the path of totality was only something like 70 miles wide. The maximum possible is under 200 miles, so only a minute fraction of the Earth's surface is in shadow at any moment.
Awesome video there Brother,Shalom Bubba
Thanks man
Question: what would the bees do with 1/4" more space between the top of the comb frames and the bottom of the lids? would they still use propolis to attach the frames to the lid?
Thank you for another entertaining video and thank you to you and all the other beekeepers who participated in this research!! I live in missouri, if I had wanted to drive about 50 miles north I could have been in the 'totality' zone but was fine with staying home and watching it (yes we used the glasses). We saw all but a very tiny spot at the bottom of the sun vanish. I have a wasp nest on my back porch and I can say it did NOT affect them either, they kept flying around just like normal. The only thing that affected my dogs was the fact we were outside without them! lol Again, thank you beekeepers for helping science!!! And ty DR for the great video!! p.s I just watched a video of a guy using a heat gun to uncap the honey on a frame just prior to putting it in the extractor... any thoughts??
Took my kids to Kentucky to see totality. It was something else altogether. I didn't see what, if anything, bees did differently, but the cicadas started singing as soon as the sun went away and stopped when it came back.
That's kinda funny. It was a short night for them.
You mean you didn't get them all proper eclipse goggles? LOL! Looked like they calmed down a little bit. Nice science experiment Randy!
I tried to hand make some but my fingers were starting to lock up after about the 400th pair.
Thumbs up!
Thanks Tim. Have a great week.
I was out near the hives after the eclipse here in NY. A Barn Owl flew over our heads and the sun was still out. Kind of bizzzzarre.
That's neat. I heard a hoot owl yesterday evening and I hardly ever hear them.
Miss your videos Mr. Rooster, hope all is well.
Doing good just busy. Hope y'all are good.
So, those bumble bees that you had on those feeding jars, I'm actually quite curious about them. Would be interested in seeing you do a video on them, go through just general information on them. Are they good to have around honey bee colonies? Do you have any bumble bee colonies? etc etc
They are good pollinators. Once in a while they try to get into a hive and the honey bees will kill them if it's a strong hive.
Where I'm at we had 95% totality with heavy overcast and storms. Can't say I saw anything with honey bees, but black crickets were scrambling around everywhere. I never realized how many black crickets we have around our place, until now. I didn't observe any other insects reacting.
Fishing bait!
Should've gotten a few thousand of little eclipse glasses. Would have been fun watching you putting them on the girls.
You're CRACKING me up with the bees going blind and getting lost...
Quick question... Have you struggled very much with hive beetles this year? I saw a couple, but I've lost 5 hives this year because of them and am wondering what you do to mitigate them getting the upper hand.
Love your channel, keep up the way of life!
They haven't been that bad. Maybe all the rain is affecting their pupal stage.
Looks like the ladies were just saying, "Hey, we got work to do. Get the hell outta here. Leave us alone." ;)
I'm really afraid of stinging insects but I still like watching these videos.
They sure are interesting to study though.
Yeah, they are pretty fascinating. I can certainly see the appeal of the hobby.
Hey DirtRooster when you going to make some more videos. We have been missing you I have been reduced to watching Mr Ed LOL. Hope you and your loved ones and your little flying friends have a Merry Christmas and look forward to more videos in the future
I'm going to have to get on it pretty quick. No one should have to endure Mr. Ed for any length of time. ;)
All the little bees go bzzzzz bzzzz bzzzz whispering to themselves 'silly humans what did they want us to do, play monopoly' 😂
proves bees are just the best 😆 love the video thanks😆
P.S. I did look up love bugs. The meanies on Google do not illucidate on crude names for these little bugs but what a life poor things, no food. ..... 😂
That really sucks dude at least you got NASA to show us the best part
I wonder Too
Where I'm at in Tennessee. We had about 95% totality. My bees were coming in like they would during an approaching storm. Very little out flow.
That's neat. I got to see it on one other person's video.
I do have a question for you, I may have missed it in an earlier video. What is your take on the multiple entrance for the hives. I see that you have several different configurations on your hives, and just wanted to know if you have a preference.
I like upper entrances for ventilation.
It grew dim yesterday, here in Oklahoma. I just looked over to my hive, bee's acted weird, The queen was out on a lawn chair with shades. XD (They acted normal too.)
Was there a tiny bottle of sunscreen by her?
Thanks for sharing..not much to speak on here in Albuquerque either
Just heat and more heat probably.
628DirtRooster Yes but our heat is not wet heat like yours!!!!! Ouch
Over here you go outside and you start to mildew. lol
628DirtRooster hahaha!!!!!
I was thinking they would be a bit less active because of a temperature drop. But they just kept on keepin on.
I didn't really notice a temperature change here. I'm sure there was a slight one I just couldn't tell.
As for navigating, pretty sure the females tell the drones which way to go, what speed, when to stop, where to park, etc.
I’ll bet you’re right.
A love bug feeder. I'm going to make mine out of a 50 gallon drum :)
I'm going to come up there and keep driving back and forth by it to fill in the clean spots on my windshield.
Hiya 628DirtRooster
Long time no see but I live in South Carolina as I've told you and that eclipse was supposed to come directly over my city...I live in Gaffney but they claimed it was coming straight over Greenville but we got nothing....I was pissed but where your at did you get to see anything? Great video....as usual
Nothing out of the ordinary here.
Hey Randy, what did you do with all those ceracell like top feeders? Thought they be on display now.
I have them on some hives at another yard.
cool video I like seeing how the bees reacted or basically didn't react lol. for some reason both my dog and cat freaked out right at the height of the eclipse but then were fine 10 minutes later. my cat is basically feral and I had her curled up in my lap and she was fight the dog for attention which rarely happens. so weird here day all around lol
She's scared of the dark. haha
We went to Pikeville which was in the center of totality, It got pretty dark :)
But was it totality dark? lol
@@628DirtRooster No, it gets about as dim as close to twilight, just for a couple of minutes. I was located within a mile of the centerline of totality and the bees did not seem to notice it at all. It is like a heavy cloud blocks the sun for a few minutes, no darker.
Florida has 3 seasons, Hurricane season and 2 love bug seasons.
LOL True
I saw one of your bees with welding goggles on
They all had tan lines from the day.
Anyone know what the music at the timelapse part is called?
thank you :P
Hey Dirt Rooster! I love your videos! Thanks for spreading the wisdom! Do you have a Patreon account? Or have you ever thought of starting a Patreon account? I want to donate to your channel!
Thanks so much. Never have set one up.
Personally I think the bees used tiny little welding goggles and gps systems to get around so they had no problems. lol Oh, by the way, another good video.
I wondered why they were all front heavy.
Love you PC term for love bugs lol. They have a more "common" vulgar term down in the south I'm sure you're familiar with 😂
Yep
Lol. Lost and blinded bees? Cute.
Reduced the populations by 50% ;)
whats wrong with your bees???? where are their lil 20 dolla eclipse glasses- why arent they all laying out to see the big planet beebibaru??? or all those huge BFOs flying around-- strange activity indeed you must have a bunch of pat riotic bees or somethin-- glad you and pop got to enjoy the eclipse event together- we had welders helmets out too and got to share it with the grandgrimlins- much love yall.... blessings
I'm surprised y'all didn't video Greg and John running around trying to get everyone to stare at it with 3D glasses. :)
My mum told me that i thought honey come from squashed ladybugs when i was very young lol
LOL
i druv down to st louis to see the eclipse. perfect visibility where i was. about a minute before totality the sky abruptly darkened enuff to trip street lites, wake up the cicadas, & you could see stars in the sky along side the sun. the sun was a black ball with a rim of bright white (the corona). it was a cool sight. afew hours later a storm front come thru & it got seriously wet fer a bit.
I'm jealous. Maybe one day I can travel somewhere to see it in person instead of on UA-cam.
the next total eclipse visiblein the states is in april 2024 it goes diagonal thru texas a couple or 3oo miles east of me.
I'm from north AR. 93% coverage. At the peak I could hear bees but didn't really see anything to out of the norm. Everything else was QUIET here in the woods.
Animals all settle down?
My dogs slept right through it.
ya boss im feedin' and they eatin ! for the first time in 3 years i actually treated for mites too.... guess ill see if it makes a difference.
Let me know what results you see.
why are the holes on the nectar jars so small?
So the jars hold a vacuum when we turn them over.
Is it to late in the year to due a split? Two new hives started April 23, lots of bees and honey. Starting to see queen cells. Seems queen in one hive isn't laying well. Are they trying to replace her, or swarm? Should I build a nuc colony, or just let it ride? I'm a newby, first year bee keeper. I feel I'm set up for disaster no matter what I do. I need advice. I'm on my own here in West Texas.
I'd split if you have queen cells. Move all brood and all bees on the frames to a new location and keep the queen where she is with the field bees. Feed feed feed.
I fed 2 gallons on Monday, checked today and it was all gone. They like sugar more than I do.
Mine will chase my truck when I pull in the yard because they know there is syrup spilled somewhere in the bed most all the time. lol
Made my nuc, have them sealed inside for a few days? Honey, nectar, capped brood. Some Larvae, very few eggs. I wanted more eggs but was a little hesitant to go all through the hives since I did that yesterday. Hope I didn't accidentally move the queen too. I checked but... Thanks for your help, I'll try not to bother you again about it.
After watching the eclipse bee videos I wonder if the bees knew it was going to happen? If they are so in tune to the sun do they also know where the moon is?
Maybe. The moon does control other things. The tides...
here in TN we had full solar eclipse and the bees did not move off the front of the hive
Probably trying to figure out what was going on.
is it terrible if i say at least i wasn't the only one with clouds. we watched through our phones using the magic of 360* video.
you should have bought 40,000 tiny bee eclipse glasses from amazon
On back order from China.
DO you have web site where you may sell product ?? or to donate?
Soon
Our eclipse here in Michigan was not much. More like a big cloud rolling through.
About the same here.
I just found the perfect vid on bees and the eclipse from Boone Down South.
shlisa shell that's unfortunate for you I got a great view from Michigan
Thanks Shlisa. I'm going to link his video in the description.
noobstalker 1, are you taking about the view around you or the view of the sun? I am just curious.
I had a great view of the sun. As far as the experience and color changes and birds quieting it wasn't what I was hoping for. My last experience was one to remember! It was truly magnificent.
Let me know. Thanks. : )
you got some strange dogs there but they must be trained well to make honey for you.
They are very well trained.
It's sunny about 350 days a year in Vegas. And on the day of the eclipse it fucking rains and blocked it out.
Figures.
Another great rocking video randy,by the way have you seen jeffs time lapse video of the eclipse.
Just kidding, I bet he's kicking himself right about now lol.
1-0 to the dirt rooster.
LOL I saw it. I'm going to call him tomorrow and pick on him about it.
I was really worried that you didn't get itty-bitty eclipse glass for all your bees till I remembered they've got enough legs so they can just shade the eyes with the 1st 2 legs and just keep 'a gittin' it! It rained from the 1st to the last here, THEN the sun came out! HA!. I thought about going to bed when it got dark but just about time to shut this thing off it got light again so I stayed up. Those eclipse glasses are darker than a Shade-10 lens in your hood. I suppose all that shrimp and bacon makes a good antidote for bee back stings. I'd tell everybody that, anyway. The BEST to you and Pop from us goofy hillbillies!
Hey thanks Lewie. Shame the weather ruined your view.
No problem Randy. This place and one in Oregon gets the most rain in the whole U.S. so I'm used to it. Moldy but used to it.
We hit a new rain fall record for the first time in like 150 years here this year.
This place is a tropical rain forest without the tropics.
I have a gorgeous pic of a partial eclipse through a frame of honey. Sadly, I can’t attached photos to comments here. Would love to email it to you.
Ok. You can also post it on the “wall of fame” on our web site.
I live about 25 miles north of springfield Missouri, which is roughly an hour away from the best "black out "spot in my state. At it's peak, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. I could tell a big difference in the brightness of the sun, it didn't feel as warm on my skin, and we could see one star, or planet, not sure which in the western sky. It lasted 30 or 40 minutes, of noticeably differences because of the eclipse. Sorry but I didn't take any video but I have between 20 and 25 hives here at the house and I couldn't tell any noticeable different
Just business as usual for mine too.
1:24 bow-chica-bow-bow
You so dirty
LOL, so i've been told!
:)
Mr Ed had wax moth larva problems today, lmao . Been to dam hot here too. My day was normal, except, hillbillies shooting there guns off .There a new moon too, and that when u suppose to start new indivior's , like spells, business ect. I had to move my last swarm tonight, there no moon. That all the crazy that happen CHEERS BRO
hahaaa...
oh my tried to post my previous comment 3 times and kept getting message that said unknown error- so lo looked over my message real good- and realized that i used the word pat riotic all put together and it wouldnt accept so i seperated the word pat riotic and guess what it went thru-- so now we know - blessings yalll
movinon04 well, you did post it, 3 times
thanks for the heads up on that- didnt know it posted- wonder why i got the error then--hmmm funny stuff is happenin-- i removed 2 of them-- thanks
Would feeding them shopbought honey do bad?
Wouldn't hurt a bit.
Do you notice a difference in the taste of the honey when you have been feeding sugar water?
No but we usually aren't feeding during a honey flow (major bloom cycle) and that's mostly what gets extracted/tasted. Honey made off sugar is just as good. It's just sugar from a different source. Flower nectar is sugar as well.
