***Get my solar eclipse timing app for 2024! It was the #1 eclipse timing app used in 2017!
** I have released a NEW e-book titled “Eclipse Day - 2024 and More! How to enjoy, observe, and photograph a total solar eclipse.” It is an entirely new concept in eclipse books because the chapters follow the eclipse’s progression and tell you exactly what to do! Learn everything from the basics to advanced eclipse photography. Digital versions are just $9.99! ** Apple iPads (English and Spanish versions). Google Android Tablets (English and Spanish versions). PDF download (English). Spiral bound print book (English) ($49.99).

Thanks to all of the Solar Eclipse Timer users. Welcome to new eclipse chasers! I want to teach everyone the fine details of observing and enjoying a total solar eclipse. Part of that is learning about the partial phase phenomena. I believe that this is the best video on UA-cam regarding animal behavior, specifically as it relates to chicken behavior during an eclipse.
smarter everyday sent me
Great, I hope you like Destin's last video about doing eclipse day together. It was fun!
Just watched you from SmarterEveryday! Amazing video!
Thanks! It was really amazing to me!
Just watched the solar eclipse in Dallas, TX April 8th 2024 1:40pmCST. What an experience!
The smarter crew.
That is awesome! Great video
Thanks for your comment. Glad you liked it.
Who else is here because of smarter every day? Now we have cool stuff to look at about eclipses, I love this.
just you
@@swashington942 Check out Destin's latest eclipse day video. He came with me and my group to the eclipse and we had a great time.
I'm in the path of totality and have chickens and plan to film them!!! Thank you so much for your contributions and your content! Can't wait to get my daughter to run a few science experiments, including our goofy chickens, on this day!
Thanks for your nice comment. Now that the 2024 eclipse is over I will have much more content to upload.
I love the moment of realization while watching them head for the feed where I thought "oh wow, they think its morning!" This is extremely interesting, I'm curious to see if you might do some observations of nocturnal animals other than crickets in the future! Subscribed!
I think my chickens would go into the coop. My chickens (approx 40) are all ALWAYS in their coops before it’s completely dark. 😊
can you believe being in a car driving during totality instead of choosing to be someplace you can actually watch & enjoying?
Lucky enough to be in the path... But missing out anyways
Yes for April 8th. I leave in the morning. Hoping for minimal cloud coverage.
This is super interesting!!
That is so cool. I'm going to have to film my farm this coming eclipse! 🐓
Yes, if you have chickens, set up a video camera and see what they do.
@@solareclipsetimer it will be interesting to see what the pigeons do as well. They fly free all day. I'll let you know 🌘
Next dino movie has to happen during a total eclipse and all of them go out to feed ahaha
I have observations from the eclipse today (April 8th, 2024).
I have 2 coops, so I put the light on in 1 of them, and left the other to the ambient effects. Both coops were unremarkable...if anything the lit coop had more nappers. Neither had any roosting or abnormal behaviour...it was as if it was a snowstorm, with no snow. Which made me realize, that here in the North...we often have very dark days, which would explain why my chickens (and other animals) determined it was not the advance of night, but just a darkness. They were all unphased by the eclipse.
We saw the same in 2024. It was weird how they first all went into the coup, and then all came out in total eclipse. But they huddled and seemed confused.
You just never know what they are going to do.
Oh, I wish I lived at least on the North American continent, but lives a bit to far away to get there!
But hope to see some great vids.
Our chickens go into their coop about 20 to 30 minutes before it gets completely dark. I keep their small door open. I'd say they head for the coop about the same time as sunset, way before it gets dark. I will be interested to see what ours do this time.
Yes, you should try to video them!
@@solareclipsetimer I did video the chicken house, but all I caught was normal behavior before it really started to get dark. I noticed that right before and during totality they all just froze completely still wherever they were, and stayed that way until it was decently light out again. This is what they have done in the past when roosting outside, I can walk right up to them and pick them up to put them in the chicken house. I have a few who didn't like to go to the house initially. I would put them up to protect them as they were on the ground.
So I guess on April 8th the chickens are going to have 2 breakfasts.
You mean today. I'm gonna keep an eye on my chickens when it happens but they act weird everyday. Maybe during the eclipse they'll stop bullying eachother, that'd be odd behavior for them. 😂
That lady needs a bigger trough for her chickens. You got that many chickens spread the dang food out more so others don't get bullied out of feeding. Even if it is for a second breakfast 😂
It is also interesting to me that some of the chicken did not go to feed after totality. Are they the smarter ones, or just less hungry?
I don't really know. I don't think it has to do with being smarter. Most went to the feeders. Others are picking up some food mixed in with the grass. And you're correct some others weren't interested in eating.
My chickens feed all day, not just in the morning. They do take small breaks and lay in the sun, or roll in the dust, but mostly eat all day. They are free range, so hunting frogs, snakes, and bugs is their favorite thing to do.
@@TheRexberry Sure. The chickens in my video had more of a schedule or routine.
Do you get as excited for annular eclipses? I'm excited for the 2024 total, but also the 2023 annular.
I have never traveled to see an annular. But I agree with you that 2023 looks interesting since it is in the states. Not sure how I would feel about it if I am watching, watching, watching and totality never comes!? So maybe 2023 will be a good test for me. It will be deep enough to observe some animal behavior changes, certainly crickets. Also would be interesting for me to repeat my sharp and fuzzy shadow experiment at the annular to see what happens. That is the next video I am going to upload, my sharp and fuzzy shadow experiment. I will have the best documentation on the internet discussing this particular partial phase phenomena.
Dr. Telepun, if you want our complete chicken video, I can get it to you. I think it is as good or better than this one.
You tube won't let us share his channel of his video, but it's fun, for a 13 year old. and we captured the chickens, too! All using your timer!
I’m going to my parents’ in the Dallas area for the upcoming total eclipse (4/8/24). I’m sad I won’t be at home because we have chickens but we are just outside of the path so I’m not sure they’ll do anything different. 🤔
❤
im not totally sure how it goes but chicken is in the creation story of turtle island. its amazing how they knew the land was turtle north america, over seas its a Elephant. the 2 oldest ? anywy the story goes the natives are suippose to bring the chickens head back. which is south america.
there documentary on youtube, Turtle Island. guy draws graphs to explain it all . its unbelievable how they knew all that, well God obviously|! tahoe
I saw no special behaviour. Some of the chickens ate, some didn't. Those that ate could just be celebrating they saw an eclipse. The excitement of witnessing a special event causes people to eat too.
Hi, most did go to the feeding troughs and feed after the light returned. It seemed to me to be the association of light again, after totality, to feeding, just like when the owner's son opens the coop for the first time in the morning.
