  • NP249 to NP242 transfer case swap Part 2.
    I'm doing a transfer case swap in my 1994 Jeep GrandCherokee ZJ. Taking a 1996 NP242 and putting it in my 1994 ZJ. Here I tear down the 242 to use the guts in my front half 249 and back half 242. I work through the shift shaft and shift levers to find an easier way to break it down.

    On the NP242 there is a roll pin that must be removed. There is an access hole. You have to punch out the plug and then then the roll pin. You have to do that before splitting the case.

      Please explain further. The roll pin would not tap out and it also did NOT need to be removed before the case was split. Post your vid link here if you would like, I'm all for information sharing.

      @@kevinwoodard680 Unfortunately I do not have video of that because it is essentially just reverse steps of my 249 and 242 disassembly. My end result was a 249 front half and 242 back half of the cases. at 7:30 I explain some of that.

    You know they make a retaining clip pliers that is designed for the flat ends. They're cheap and it makes it very easy to remove those retaining clips.

    The 96 242 was on a vehicle with a different transmission. Was you rear drive shaft the correct length for the 242 TC after you were done, or did you have to change rear drive shaft length also.

    • @AOT-offroad
      @AOT-offroad  4 роки тому

      yeah I'm 46RH and the 96 probably had 46RE. Nothing caused any problems driveshaft length fit properly.

    I had another question bud. Since you said to use all of the shifter parts from the 242, and install them into the 249 front half, does that include the bolt, spring and pin thing that the shift gear thing inside makes contact with, or just use the one from the 249? There is a difference in length I noticed.

    • @AOT-offroad

      I used all of the guts from the 242 including the shift parts

  • @chrismillar6991
    @chrismillar6991 7 років тому +2

    So you took all the guts from the front of the 249 and just installed them into the front shell of the 242 ?

    • @chrismillar6991
      @chrismillar6991 7 років тому +1

      or did you literally just swap front ends without changing anything ?

    • @AOT-offroad
      @AOT-offroad  6 років тому

      Sorry for the late reply. I did the opposite. I removed the guts of the 242 and used the front of the 249 (because the gear cut is different 7:48) to make one frankenCase.

    How has this held up for you? I'm in the same boat as you, to where I need to do the same thing. Just curious, why can't the ring gear or Sun gear whatever you want to call it, that makes contact with the outside of the planetary gears, just be swapped from the 249 front half to the 242 half? Thanks for the video by the way

      xXBlackxDahliaXx 0 well since the swap I’ve been fabricating my triangulated 4 link set up. Maybe you could swap that gear but I had messed up the bearing in the case so I just decided to use the 249 side.

      All Out Throttle thank you for the response man. I'm just going to use both halves. Bought a rebuild kit for both sides, so just need a new chain and I'll be good to go. Thanks again

    Now I do have a question. How long has it lasted? I gotta do the same thing with mine. 93 249 using a 96 242.

    So are you going with the 242 or 247 in your jeep when your done?

    • @AOT-offroad
      @AOT-offroad  6 років тому +2

      It's a 242 with 249 front because of the different gear cut. All the functionality of a 242.
