This is an excellent video on a 249 to 242 input shaft swap. I also go over the rebuild of a 242 transfer case. The rebuild of the 242 transfer case is only necessary if you are replacing the bearings and seals in the 242.

This is a common transfer case swap used by Jeep Grand Cherokee owners who are running the 249 transfer case. The 249 transfer case features the viscous coupler which usually wears out after 150,000 miles. Instead of replacing the viscous coupler on the 249 transfer case, many Jeep Grand Cherokee owners choose to do a Transfer Case Swap. One of the most common Transfer Case Swaps is going from the 249 to the 242 transfer case.
The 249 transfer case offers 4 high, 4 low, and neutral. The advantage of going to the 242 transfer case is not only does it not have a viscous coupler that can go out, it offers 2 wheel drive, 4 part time, 4 full time, 4 low, and neutral.
I really appreciate the ability to take the 242 transfer case on my Jeep Cherokee into 2 wheel drive. It saves a lot of wear, and improves gas mileage. Then, when I need 4 wheel drive, it is always available.
If your Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 249 transfer case is nearing the end of its life, I highly recommend looking into a 249 to 242 transfer case swap.

Know that the video is over 3 years old today (25July2020) and this is a nice tutorial on a NP t-case rebuild.
Just to let people know, _when_ the 3 pinion planetary is accessible, *it can be swapped over to a NP241 t-case 6 pinion planetary* . This mod doubles the torque handling capacity of your t-case + it more robust for sudden torque "spikes" that may happen when one is out wheelin' in their Jeep. Good video here!

Great video, very helpful in my 242 overhaul. One note- the bearing you cut out can be removed if you heat the rear case with a propane torch from the inside. I heated it uniformly for under 2 minutes and it slid right out.

I see that you are using Craftsman 'SNAP RING' pliers in this video. I have a similar set. It looks like it was quiet a struggle. Those are actually 'LOCK RINGS' or sometimes called Circlips . You could pick up a set for about $20 -$30 . Makes the job much easier. We just ordered a set from Amazon. I recommend SK.brand . Or I seen a very sturdy looking set from a company called SpeedWok. Probably make much lighter work of your next transfer case project. I hope this info helps you out a bit. Thank you for all your great videos

Do you have a video showing the part(s) in the 242 that give you full time 4WD as well as part time 4WD? I've seen several 242 t-case videos but nobody has ever shown those magical parts that give you both full time and part time 4WD.

I'm in the middle of a 249 to 242 swap. 98 GC 5.2 Your video is a great resource, but I didn't hear anything about this. The 249 input/planetary has a narrower bearing in the case. At least mine does. I set the planetary in and it would not go all the way in. Well I noticed the bearing difference, and had that "AH-HAH!" moment...

  • @beardyhat9547

Thanks for this, I think it's going to be a big help to me.
I have a '98 242 that I have all torn down and seeing all the pieces laid out, I'm honestly damned intimidated by it. Hoping I can figure out where all the snap rings and little orings go back together.
One question: The little springy rings that go around the various bearings for the input/outputs, did you put those back? I notice you mangled one pretty good and didn't see any sections showing you placing them back into their places.

Hi Dale and Jason. I've been making this swap for a week now... Used my original 249 front case half and input shaft with a 242 back case and all other internals. The video has been incredibly helpful, though in my case things put up a lot more of a fight, like snap rings and stuff... One thing I'd like to point out... What is called the "mode fork roll pin" is not the piece you point out in the video, this pin is inside the fork attached to the center shaft, when you remove this pin you can remove this center shaft from the fork and basically remove all the assembly. You can also wiggle stuff around and remove these parts without removing that pin though, like you did. The other "pin" you show in the video is not to be removed. Just my $,0.02 in the most respectful and constructive way. Thank you for making this video!

Hey man great video. I did a 249 to 242 swap now my rear drive shaft has 0 slack. It barely fits. Did you change to another shorter than 31" from u joint to u joint? If so which one do I need to look for? Will an zj drive shaft work? I've seen some of those shorter..

I assume that your np249 was an earlier version. I have to do the same swap for my ‘94 Grand using a np242 from a 97 XJ.
I read that there needs to be a hole drilled for the mode fork roll pin but I didn’t see you do it. Is that something you missed or it’s not a requirement?

I have a 97 Cherokee XJ with a np242. I had to do a complete rebuild on it. Now it gets 2wd, part time 4wd, no full time high 4wd, neutral and 4wd low. But I don't understand why it is missing 4wd full time? Any suggestions?

Hi, I am wondering if you have any videos on cylinder head gasket work. I have a '97 ZJ 5.2L. Oil is leaking to the cooling system. Any intel on how to diagnose and repair would be helpful. Two areas I am concerned about are 1) resurfacing the heads...what is needed for that work, and 2) the left side where the A/C tubes are, how do I get to the valve cover and head? there is very little room. Thanks so much

  • @bushcraftnorthof6012

I'm assuming the oil pickup was cut by a stretched chain? Was gonna re-chain my 242, but gets pricy fast, for chain, kit and gears. Hoping to find a low-mileage gently used t-case. Great videos, though. Take care.

I've got a 249 transfer case with a viscous coupling I want to run a thousand crank horse power thru it is there any way of beefing these up to hold that kind of HP reliable. I know people are running 800 to 1000 thru stock ones but it would always be in the back of my mind that I was going to destroy it on launch.

we are doing the 249 to 242 swap, had it in and it would grind going into reverse when engine was above 750rpms. we could not fit the input shaft from 249 into 242 planetary so we swapped whole assembly. could this be the cause of our problem?
have it back out again and dont really see any obvoiuse signs of the grinding noise, we are going to reinstall 242 input shaft and see if we can re-install into the zj???? thoughts?

So, the difference between the 249 and 242 Planetaries was just a diameter difference or a length difference? Just wondering, my planned swap is a Cj body on a Rubicon Frame, with the 242 T-Case. Liking your vids.

Great Video- I am trying to do the same thing and this has been incredibly helpful with one problem.... What Year is that Model 242 J Transfer Case ? Will Years 1996-1998 242J Transfer Cases work as your video is showing....It seems that the Model 242s that I seen and have ordered by mistake have the wrong Output Shaft with a Rubber Boot instead of the Cone and the shaft is too long -....If you can tell me what year you used that could help me get the right 242 J Transfer Case - Thanks in advance for your continued help - Brian

That was also another Great Video, I have searched the country for an ZJ 242s (1996 - 98) and XJ (1996-2001) with this cone in the video but I can only find 242s where the Output Shaft has a rubber boot or shaft only without the cone. Was there a unique part number or other way to find the 242 that looks like the video to help in my quest....or trial and error will have to work by verifying by sight only. Thanks for very well documented, interesting and entertaining videos.

    best tires to get?
its not choice of brand as everybody knows its michelan! But its a choice of tread style.
i pick deep (wide deep groves) . old store called western auto had a poka dot style that was great. looked silly but was supreme traction on every surface. but it was 24% louder then summer tread. and it lasted 30% less miles.
still it was the best designed tread ever.

249 to 242 swap if you have a later years 249 like a say 97-98 is a downgrade.. the 249 is a superior case... spend the money get a new viscous coupler.. and be done with it..
