    My first time working on a transfer case; seems simple enough. In my son's WJ taking out the 247 for a 242 so we can put a lunchbox locker up front. Just need to swap in a few parts. This vid is much appreciated. Sub'd...awesome cam quality. Easy to follow directions. Keep it up!

    Don't be disappointed about having a 242, they're barely weaker than a 231 and the awd mode is killer. I swapped my 231 out for a 242.

      @jlsgarage872. Yes the 242 is stronger than a 231, they put the 242 in the H2's. If you live where you have snow covered roads in the winter the AWD feature of the 242 is a must have.

    On 33" tires you'll need a
    30 tooth speedo great for a 3:73
    33 tooth for 4:10
    36 tooth for 4:56
    39 tooth for 4:88

      I went by some chart somewhere and went with the 39 tooth for the 4.56 gears and 33's. It reads less than actual by about 3 mph at 60mph. So, this reference makes sense.

    I like the teardown. I have a question. Is there a input shaft swap for the transfer case to match up with my newly rebuilt 42re? I have one grand cherokee limited with the 42 and want to put it in a same year (98) Laredo 4×

    To remove the blind hole bearing just remove the needle bearings and have someone weld a bead on the inside of the race if you don't have a welder. When it cools , it will fall out.

      Freeze spray can work along with a little heat on the case .Friend did it and the bearing fell out.

    So, question and I keep getting conflicting answers. I have a 96 ZJ with the np242 selec trac and am having difficulties finding the correct chain bc places have different info that all conflicts.. what chain does the damn zj use in its 242

    • @westonharby165
      @westonharby165 3 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure it's the same for the zj as the wj, the I6 models have a nv242j while the v8s have the nv242hd. you can tell the difference by the rear drive shaft out of the t case. The 242j has a rubber seal/boot, while the 242hd has a metal seal

      I agree with you on the 242 transfer case. For what I use it for the fulltime mode is awesome when your in the snow or sandy areas and can drive with it and leave it on Unlike the 231 it's only ment for off-road use and that's it. To each their own I guess.

    What is the orange jack stand brand holding the transmission case??

  • @niteflyer3380
    @niteflyer3380 3 роки тому

    my question is, on the 242 case when in the fulltime all wheel drive position should I be able to hold the front output shaft when turning the input shaft?

    • @nickopedia5669
      @nickopedia5669 3 роки тому +2

      Yes. Because its AWD in that mode (which allows for differential speeds between front and rear axle), not 4x4, which would lock them together.

    Just got a bearing and seal kit for a 242j same as yours, but mine has a regular original style front output bearing. Not a sealed one. Did you order that one? What part number of kit did you get /buy? I am just curious.

    • @Donnythelatemodeltech
      @Donnythelatemodeltech  3 роки тому

      It was in great kit, sorry I don't have the part number. There is two size bearings, a 16 and 24mm from what I remember. 1996 and up use a 16mm and 94 and below use the 24mm. Not really sure why mine had a sealed bearing, I just needed it to fit.

    • @francisbrackney2061
      @francisbrackney2061 3 роки тому

      Yes sir. The 242 I have takes the 16mm front bearing. I was just curious about it. Cause I have heard some mixed comments. Some people say that that front output bearing is better for off road cause it is sealed. And some other people say not to run it in a daily driver cause it wears out a lot faster than a open faced bearing.

  • @42Goopy42
    @42Goopy42 Рік тому

    Input bearing lock ring on my 242 was put on backwards. That was a pita. Drilling the pin out wasn't really that hard. 3/16 bit and some light oil did the trick.

    I'm new to 4x4. The guy I bought my XJ said in order to have the 4x4 bind and work, I have to put it in 4H or 4L (whichever) and drive reverse for just a bit and then put it on drive. I don't remember if he said that is how you engage the 4x4 or maybe he told me because there might of been something wrong with the gears engaging and locking in the 4x4. But I know you don't need to go in reverse to engage the 4x4. So what could the problem be IF there is a problem with it? I live in Cali so I gotta get my XJ smog before I can take it out and tested. Just asking if anyone knows what could be if there is a thing that would actually cause that.

    • @blitz-n-chipz361
      @blitz-n-chipz361 Рік тому

      My only guess is dude had a junk locker in there that required that process to engage. I know mine doesn’t always like to come unlocked but it’s in the front so I never worry about it

    why is this transfercase less desireable? it has an AWD option the 231 doesn't. is it about strength?

    • @WAEMIDIV
      @WAEMIDIV 3 роки тому

      Yeah the 242 is more versatile but won't perform as well in extreme offroad situations.
      It is rated for 1,400 ft-lbs of torque, so to break it you gotta do some crazy shit. The 231 is rated for 1,800 ft-lbs of torque by comparison. Many people will tell you the 242 is built worse than the American Education system but it's a good case, just not quite as strong as the 231

      Time? Maybe. Money? No. IF you can find someone to rebuild it for you its probably not going to be cheap. If you DIY you never need someone to do it in the future
