  • How to remove the input shaft from a 249 transfer case.
    This is part of a video series for a transfer case swap 249 to 242.
    Here I show how to open the 249 transfer case to remove the input shaft and planetary gears you will need for the transfer case swap over to the 242.
    I cover removing the bearing cap. How to remove the front drive shaft output yoke. Opening up the 249 transfer case. How to remove the 249 transfer case shift fork, and removing the 249 input shaft.
    I also give a quick time lapse video of opening the 242 transfer case as well. I will cover this better in a later video, so be sure to subscribe to follow along with this transfer case swap:

    I wish my front yoke would have come out this easy, I had to put a torch to it, soak it in PB blaster several times and use a huge pipe... took me two hours to remove it... your results may vary.
    Your videos are amazing it would have been impossible to do this job without them. Thank you very much!

      thats because it is easy when you actually know how to turn a wrench.. I took my 249 apart when i was 23 years old as my first real wrenching thing done to my 98 grand cherokee.

    What year 249 is that? I'm making a video now because you can't separate the 94 249 without opening the retaining clip window on the tail of the TC and removing the clip.

      Thanks for watching. You check out some of my other transfer case swap videos? This 249 was built on 3/28/95.

    So in the end, you just removed the input shaft from the 249 and put it in the 242 transfer case ? And also swapped the yoke from 249 to 242 to match back with the original setup on the front drive shaft ?

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, if the gear cut is the same, it's as simple as swapping the input shaft. Didn't swap the yoke.

    would they be any difference swapping a 231 instead of a242

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  8 років тому +1

      It is a very similar process. The function of the cases are similar, but you also get full time 4 wheel drive with the 242 which is used on and off road (full time use).

    Thank You for the great content. QUESTION. Can I flat tow behind my motorhome ( 4 wheels on ground) a 96 ZJ with the 249 transfer case? I tested by putting transfer case in neutral and transmission in park and zj moves freely forward and reverse as I push it. Ssme thing happens if transfer case is in neutral and transmission in neutral, I wonder what's safer. Please someone with experience on this reply. I have a trip coming soon and need to know.
    For my towing points I'm good. Jeep has a heavy duty winch mount with d rings and it's sandwiched over the unibody frame.. (1996 5.2 V8 with full time 4wd 249 transfer case, automatic transmission)

      Hey! It's a good swap. I have a video where I compare the 249 and 242. There I discuss compatible years. 👍

      @@JeepSolid I think i found the answer ......for a zj 98 i need a 242 from a xj 96-01....is that right?

      Late reply but I believe a 96-98 242 will work just fine. That’s what I’m currently doing with my 98 zj.

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  7 років тому

      Yeah, I think you can do it with it in place. Just harder to get at it, but I'd give it a try.

    I'm really wanting to do this to my '94 ZJ. I have a spare 249 but I really want the 242 for the ease of mind not having to worry about that stupid VC

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  8 років тому

      Yeah, the 242 is great. I just really like the ability to put it in 2 wheel drive. Also helps the gas mileage as well!

    • @AOT-offroad
      @AOT-offroad 8 років тому

      The 231 is a much better TC there's way more aftermarket support for it and it's tougher.

    • @jeepsblackpowderandlights4305
      @jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 4 роки тому

      Yes the VC is so stupid.. Only goes bad once every 100k or so miles. I replaced mine at 118k and its starting to go bad again at 220k miles 9 years later.. The 249 is a superior transfercase in everyway especially if you have the later year ones from 97-98
