  • Wash Day Routine for my Low Porosity Hair
    Here are all the steps:
    Wash or Co-wash, scrubbing well (I used DevaCurl Buildup Buster and No Poo Original)
    Rinse and wring out excess water
    Apply deep conditioner with heat (I used Shea Moisture JBCO Strengthen and Restore Masque and added some Neutral Protein Filler)
    Apply heat with a heat cap like Hot Head (www.thermalhaircare.com/ - mine is XL)
    Rinse - leaving a little slip
    Plop for 5-10 min to remove excess water and support your curl formation)
    Apply Uncle Funky's Curly Magic w/ Praying hands (www.unclefunkysdaughter.com)
    I use 4 pumps per section and added Neutral Protein Filler in the palm of my hand
    Distribute products and smooth hair with a Denman Brush
    Plop again - WITH HEAT (10-15 min or until cap is mostly cool) **This is different!**
    Apply gel with praying hands (I used Alcohol Free Defining Gel by Bioterra, available at Sally's)
    Scrunch scruch scrunch - all the way up to the roots. Keep your hands wet/slippery.
    Remove excess water with a tee shirt, smooth microfiber towel, or a baby receiving blanket
    Diffuse as long as you can stand it ;)
    Clip Roots
    Diffuse or air dry until absolutely fully dry
    Clap out the crunch
    Tame frizzies or wild hairs with lube (I used LuLu) or a light oil (like Argan)
    Enjoy your beautiful hair!

    Hey Tara! wow I finally found someone with very similar hair. Most others I follow have thinner, high porosity hair. The other day I tried my hot head over my tshirt plop which gave me some kickass wave/curls. Then I ended up here and found VALIDATION!! I have also been considering buying the uncle funky's product, so I guess I will go out and get it. Any other favorite products? I will be watching all your videos

      SO GLAD TO HEAR! yes! love Uncle Funky’s - they also have a great deep conditioning treatment. Curls line is also good. Blueberry Bliss Leave-in is widely available but I ordered from their website and got lots of goodies! They have a similar line called Poppin’ Pineapple. It smells soooo good! I also like the Blueberry Bliss remair mask.

    • @southerncurltara
      @southerncurltara  5 років тому +3

      Alma Garcia thanks! It depends on the weather and if I’ve slept with it protected. Ha. Most times, I wet my hands, do a few pumps of water based lube mixed with a few pumps Uncle Funky’s Curly Magic and smoothe over any weird spots with praying hands. If it’s super humid or rainy, I usually add some light gel (Bioterra). Sometimes I can just smooth with damp hands or a little light oil. I’m still perfecting this and some days I just have to wet it to rinse some product out and redo it. I try to avoid that as much as possible! Haha I’ll do a refresh video montage soon.

    I watched this video about a month ago, and not kidding I thought you were crazy with how much protein filler you were using every wash day. I think I have medium porosity hair but my hair seems to get over moisturized soooooo easily. I’m really trying to avoid washing it more than twice a week but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I just did a protein treatment but I had to wash it out and my hair was still overmoistured. I just bought the protein filler, this is totally irrational but I’m afraid my hair is going to fall out. I really hope adding more protein in my routine will help me get the protein I need! Thanks for your video, sorry I didn’t believe you at first lol! Sending you love

    • @tarashaver13
      @tarashaver13 4 роки тому

      give it up 000 Good question! typically, if your hair is limp and lifeless, it’s over moisturized. So if your hair is good, you are likely balanced. If it is a bit stringy, you probably need moisture. If it’s losing curl, not curling, and/or limp, you need protein.

Also, don’t forget that the weather can play a huge factor in how your hair behaves. Have you found the Frizz Forecast yet? If not, google it! Wow, I’m sooooo confused bc i thought protein was a no no for low porosity hair ??? Is it that it’s ok while deep conditioning??

    • @southerncurltara
      @southerncurltara  4 роки тому +11

      Protein and moisture can be tricky but if you remember that low porosity hair is so tightly closed (like an unopened pine cone) that it doesn’t let moisture or protein in easily, it makes more sense. I have found that I have to do a weekly deep condition and have to add protein during styling. About every other or every third wash, I’ll do more protein in my deep conditioner - like Liquid Aminos or the Neutral Protein Filler. The heat helps it penetrate.
      Folks will really rattle your nerves warning about protein overload as well as over moisturizing. I’ve yet to experience protein overload. If I don’t add protein in some fashion, my hair is limp and unstructured. It can appear over moisturized pretty easily - but it is quickly brought back to life with the protein drops or a styling product with protein. I hope this helps.

    • @southerncurltara

      M A I’ll be posting a newer routine soon, but briefly - I’m finding prepoo to be beneficial. I’ve either applied and used a heat cap or applied and left on overnight (sometimes with heat to start). You can read more about penetrating oils. Avocado is a good one.
      My hair has been on the struggle bus after the first 1-2 days after wash day so I’m having to fuss with it more. I’m back to using a leave-in conditioner during styling. It’s a struggle for sure! Try the oil on that section and see if it helps.
      I’ve also had some luck with dampening my hair and applying heat to refresh. Likewise, using the bowl method and dipping the ends in water to refresh (instead of wetting my whole head.) Both are mostly effective but still hit or miss so I haven’t made a video yet but maybe both are worth a try as you experiment. :)

      Curls Blueberry Bliss Leave-in Conditioner (or Popping Pineapple - but I’ve only been able to find it online). OR Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In
      Uncle Funky’s Curly Magic Curl Activator OR Camille Rose Curl Maker OR Kinky Curly Curl Custard (*this is the most pricey product but is really effective at controlling frizz and promoting the curl)
      Gel of choice - my hair is dark so I prefer one of the ‘softer’ hold gels to reduce flaking. I usually use Bioterra’s Alcohol Free Defining Gel (Sally’s) on the ends of my hair. Sometimes on my whole head if I have time to really style it...

      These products are kind of mid-range pricing ($12 for leave in conditioner, for example) so if you’re looking for something less expensive, check out Not Your Mother’s Naturals. I don’t hate them, but found the shampoo too harsh for regular use and some of the conditioners too heavy, which I suspect may be a prob for you too. There is a chart online and in the curly hair group on FB that shows them in order of heaviness. There is one variety that has some waxes and such, so avoid the black bottles.
      The cheapest is VO5 condish which can be used as cowash, condish, and/or leave in. downside is, the super cheap products may cause itching, so just pay attention and stop using if you seem to have a reaction. It’s like $1 so literally the least expensive item you could try! :-)

So if yours is low porosity, does that make our high porosity types low porosity types and our low porosity types extremely low porosity now, or some other phrase that has yet to be coined? Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and redraw our afro textured hair categories again if we've been this far off... 🤔 Love the adaptation and consistency of the terminology for everything from co-washing to praying hands though, it makes your advice familiar and super easy to follow along. • @tarashaver13
      @tarashaver13 4 роки тому +1

      meraklikedimuki It can be confusing for sure! If you read up on low porosity hair in general, you’ll see that because the shaft is so tightly closed it can be hard to get/keep the moisture and protein. That’s why the heat is important. It’s pretty hard to protein overload low po hair, but it is possible. If your hair is kinda stringy, you probably need more moisture. If it’s losing curl, or won’t curl, you need more protein. The hair analysis from My Mane Bio really helped me understand this. Even if you don’t do an analysis, they have great resources and info on their website and FB page. Hope this helps! • @nicolejeffries740
      @nicolejeffries740 4 роки тому

      meraklikedimuki Low porosity hair can be protein sensitive because the protein doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft and so it just lays on top creating build up. Your hair may like protein but it just depends. I have fine hair, low porosity and my hair really loves protein because it’s fine. When I need protein I’ll do a treatment, and use my heat cap. I have overloaded my hair with protein before using the drops! But now I know how to use them properly and I prefer an actual treatment anyway. I do the same with deep conditioning treatments and use heat. What helped my curly hair journey the most was finding out my texture (not my curly type or pattern), my density and porosity. I have fine texture, low to medium density and low porosity, pattern is 2b to 3a. I have to use volumizing low poo and conditioner, deep conditioning treatments as needed and protein treatments as needed, and because my hair is low porosity AND fine, both things make my hair prone to hike up so I enjoy a sulfate shampoo up to 3 times a month. Some curly girls are totally against sulfates, but just like protein it really depends on your hair! I have hard water too, so I have to use a chelating shampoo as well. Been doing this since 11/2018 and I am finally getting it. 🤣 My hair likes small proteins, like amino acids or hydrolyzed proteins because those proteins are smaller and will better penetrate low porosity hair (WITH HEAT). ❤️

Rizos curls deep conditioner is also one of my favorite but it contains coconut oil so I use it on and off. Do you have any favorites protein free deep conditioners?

      oooh I have not tried the Ouidad or Rizo. I’ll have to investigate.
      Let me check my labels. I’ve got a nice little stash of some that I really like, but I’m not sure if they are protein free.

    I thought low porosity hair can't take protein and heavy butters and oils?

    • @southerncurltara
      @southerncurltara  3 роки тому

      Hi - this is a common misconception about proteins. It can’t take large proteins. Butters and oils are pretty subjective - and it depends on the purpose. When I do an oil treatment, it’s to soften my hair up a bit since I have coarse to very coarse hair. Or to seal the shaft and weight it down if it’s really really humid out.

      @@southerncurltara thank u a lot for ur reply! So what's considered large protein and what kinda protein could low porosity hair handle?

    • @southerncurltara
      @southerncurltara  3 роки тому

      Proteins like keratin and collagen are extremely large. Others like silk, milk, wheat, and soy also need to be broken down in order penetrate the hair shaft. This can’t be done at home - only in a lab - so you want to look for products that have been ‘hydrolyzed.’ I have several products with hydrolyzed. proteins (Curls Blueberry Bliss comes to mind) but my 2 go-tos for tweaking my treatments are Braggs Liquid Aminos (the building blocks of protein) and Neutral Protein Filler. (I just realized I’ve never looked up the ingredients for NPF...🤔... I may want to keep the mystery and just call it magic. 😉)

      @@southerncurltara we don't have these brands in Greece unfortunately is there a way or online store I can purchase them? They do seem to be amazing and to work well

    • @southerncurltara
      @southerncurltara  3 роки тому

      oooh - good question. Curls is Curls.biz. I’m not sure about their International shipping policies. Braggs Liquid Aminos is actually a food product. Braggs is the brand. Similar items can be found at health food or natural stores and is often a replacement for soy sauce. Are you a member of the International Curly Girl Group on Facebook? They may have a Greece album. If not, I can check. For the Neutral Protein Filler, it’s typically found at hair supply stores - near the coloring supplies. (like gloves and bowls) I’ve been to Greece but not for normal shopping so I’m not as familiar with what the supply chain is like. :) Let me know what you find - this might make a fun video!

    Did I hear “lube”

      Melissa Negron yes ma’am! Any water based lube will do as long as it’s free from silicones. I usually use Lulu Lube.

    Like the video, but your hair is natural high porosity. There's a lot of confusion about porosity, Please check out the video's from the curl ninja, she explains this very well.

      Vera Limpens Thanks for the comment. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. I’ve had a microscopic hair analysis done so I know my hair comes out of my head with a tightly closed shaft - low porosity.
      It’s possible for porosity to change as the hair grows and is exposed to the environment, abuse from styling, etc. It is also possible for the hair to behave differently due to build up.
      It’s a complex curly world and there are other factors besides porosity that affect results. I’m a firm believer that individual success comes from trial and error.
      FWIW: I rely heavily on the Frizz Forecast to set my expectations on wash days and beyond.

      @@southerncurltara omg I'm so confused now 😂 I thought I figured it out, but apparently not. Your hair looks similar to mine though, and also to Curly Susie's hair (she has a channel). I like styling on wet hair but it also gets pretty heavy when I do, so when I want volume I try styling damp but then I miss volume. Sometimes I just want to quit with the whole trial and error and cut it all off 😂 thanks for your reaction btw, and sorry for my assumption about your hair. I really thought I was being helpful. 😘

      Vera Limpens gah! No problem at all! It can be confusing for sure.
      Love Curly Susie. Just remember - she likely still has hair on her head that was bleached blond (not being rude - just clear that she’s a brunette and she went blonde blonde for her wedding). Now that she’s cut it shorter, it may be more consistent. I think there are some similarities with the type of curl and results since she’s a wavy/curly. Porosity matters - it’s just not the only thing that affects outcomes.
      Ahhh volume! A few things to try - root clipping like a mad woman when it’s still damp but not dripping. Also, GVP root lifter. Also, I can shake near my scalp and get a bit more lift. It depends on what I’m doing as to what I prefer - but I do think using the bonnet dryer to dry helps the volume while keeping more definition. Diffusing helps as well - but as Susie says, that’s 3-5 business days! Ha! I’ve been using the bonnet to free my hands. If I let my hair air dry, it’s usually pretty limp/flat - especially on top.
      I’m about to upload an updated wash day routine so you can see if some of my new tricks and tips help. I can’t do ‘soaking wet’ style - I have to remove water and sometimes even put some back in! Ha
      I’m definitely still learning! Thanks for the convo. Keep me posted on your progress and let me know what you think about some of my tweaks in my next wash day routine. :)

      Hi, thinking of you guys during this weird time in our world. You can order an analysis at MyManeBio.com There shouldn’t be a problem with international - since they email the report. You may want to email them for special instructions.
