I totally understand this...my hair is not thick but when wavy/curly it looks thick. If I leave it alone the hair clumps together and creates gaps and my hair looks so thin.....I always brush it to make it thicker looking.
@brizagranadeno better to have thick hair which gives me headache and pain, than thin hair and stressing over it, thinning so much you see scalp and can't do many hair styles without feeling down.
Try using water and leave in conditioner also curl cream if you want to define it that should fix it. I also have curls and people keep telling me not to brush it but i have 3c/4a so maybe it's different for me

Tbf I think brushing out looks a lot nicer on looser curls and also depending on how thick/ fine your hair is and the texture of it, personally I have quite tight curls and fine frizzy hair so if I brushed my hair out it would look like a literally lions mane, but on you and your hair, brushed out curls look really nice! So at the end of the day you do you cause i feel like it really does depend on the person and hair.
It totally also depends upon the weather region you live in. I lived in Houston for college & my hair just went immediately flat with frizz. I spend my summers in the mid-west & not as much humidity as Houst but my hair wouldn't airdrop at all so I stated using a cruel brush & hairdryer. Now we're in the Pacific North West & I can air dry & then do finger curls with product & it stays...
Do whatever you feel best :). Many people with type 2a/2b hair can brush their hair out and it not be too bad. Cause 2a-b hair gets tangeled without being brushed, it can be uncontrollable so if you brush it and add some shine oil it really works :D

@tomie you probably have meduim denisty then and I've seen people who have curly hair straighten their hair but some of it's too thick so it comes out looking really big instead of super straight but that just normal for some people so I'm assuming you have medium density

Nah if you have a lot of volume, brushing is really your greatest enemy. I only separate with my hands not for any reason other than brushes making me look like I've got a frizzy lion's mane. Not to mention a brush turns curls into waves. I do have a sister with far less volume and wavy hair though, and she always brushes hers because otherwise it doesn't look as nice. Hair thickness & volume, plus wanting super curly hair vs just waves is what determines if brushing is a good idea or not.
I don’t brush it out dry. When it is wet I brush it out for volume. But when it is dry I don’t do anything to it but I have curly hair and it is on the thicker side. On her it looks great and since she has finer hair it works.

I *never* used to brush my hair after styling with product in it and it would create gaps throughout my curl pattern but then one day i just brushed it after putting my curl foam and cream in then dried and wrapped with a microfiber towel or just a plain 100% cotton t shirt and it looks so full, the curls look so healthy. I don’t think I’ll go back. ❤😂

I did the Curly Girl Method for three years and OOF what a waste of time and money! My 3A hair loves sulfates in shampoos and silicones in my conditioners, and ever since I returned to inexpensive products with these ingredients, and returned to brushing my hair gently, I’ve received more compliments on my hair than ever before! (And saved thousands!)
I say do whatever works for you. Not every hair type is the same. Some people prefer their hair brushed, and some don’t. I don’t know why curly girl rules are the only rules applicable.
my hair got thinner after having a baby and breastfeeding. i never used to brush my hair cuz it would get poofy and ruined. but now gently combing or brushing out my styled and dried hair makes it look so much nicer and fuller. no two heads of hair are the same. even your own hair changes over the years. there’s truly no rules! just do what works best for your hair at the time 💗

I'm 41, and my mom is the one who begged to brush mine out. 🤣 She said my hair looked stringy and oily, so I brushed it out to prove to her that it would look awful, and then I realized, once again, that 'mama knows best' (at least mine does).
I usually style my hair and wear it as is, protect it overnight and wear it brushed out like that for day 2 or 3 I think both are really pretty and it just depends on personal preference

However, dry brushing/combing has caused so much breakage and just ruins my waves, my hair doesn't benefit from it, so I am fighting the urge and just relying on detangling in the shower. I wish it looked nicer when dry brushing, but mine just looks a mess if I do it lol.

COMBING is different than BRUSHING your waves, some people get the actual texture mixed up with the pattern, for some waves it’s better for you to not brush it but COMBING is perfect❤

I think it depends. If your hair is already trained to curl or wave in pattern, combing won't hurt. But if your hair is not trained to have regular patterns, damaged, or has to hold tons of different hairstyle, combing will break any pattern you create after wash and give you frizzy hair
Well, I have wavy hair and this is the case for me. If I make clumps like people do with their curly hair, my hair looks weird and thin. But I do have really heavy and thick hair. The only problem I face while brushing them is frizz. Even if f you brush your loose curls/waves they will naturally end up giving you a bit of frizz, and I desire to have really smooth hair. Like I'm obsessed with smooth wavy hair. Its not that natural but I've seen some women with really pretty wavy hair with no frizz at all.❤

I have almost your exact same hair except shorter and blonde. I can’t brush it dry, but I HAVE to use a wide tooth comb on it when it’s wet otherwise it turns into a literal rat’s nest. Fine hair is so temperamental 😭

you can separate and fluff them or use a styling product with looser hold so it’s more fluffy

i have thick wavy hair and everyone says "omg i love ur curly hair" and i have to say "uh its wavy" (well sometimes its curly)
my hair is fine and thin however it's also type 4. combing it out would just give me a 70's era fro.

I think it depends. If your hair is already trained to curl or wave in pattern, combing won't hurt. But if your hair is not trained to have regular patterns, damaged, or has to hold tons of different hairstyle, combing will break any pattern you create after wash and give you frizzy hair

Well, I have wavy hair and this is the case for me. If I make clumps like people do with their curly hair, my hair looks weird and thin. But I do have really heavy and thick hair. The only problem I face while brushing them is frizz. Even if f you brush your loose curls/waves they will naturally end up giving you a bit of frizz, and I desire to have really smooth hair. Like I'm obsessed with smooth wavy hair. Its not that natural but I've seen some women with really pretty wavy hair with no frizz at all.❤

I wish, I have really long thick wavy hair and if I brush it, it gets poofy with wierd looking waves that at the top but frizz out straight at the bottom 💀

When you brush it out add an oil on your hair it helps too

I have almost your exact same hair except shorter and blonde. I can’t brush it dry, but I HAVE to use a wide tooth comb on it when it’s wet otherwise it turns into a literal rat’s nest. Fine hair is so temperamental 😭
