Great to see that Judson gets the essence of Meshuggah. How loud it may be it's basically meditative music.
Don't sweat the time signatures. However syncopated the guitars may become the drummer himself has stated that he hears all their songs in 4/4 :)
As some others have suggested too I think it would be interesting to have Judson listen to Dancers to a Discordant System since it has a lot more melody.

Judson was spot on with how he interpreted the feel of the song at least for me, I always love listening to the song while driving because you feel like your in a trance and you lose track of time, the only thing you feel is the song and you don't get out of it until it's over.

I think the song is about believers in whatever faith, needing a god or gods to be their demiurge, so life has no meaning without said higher being they belive in. in the lyrics they say sucking vomit acting like it`s honey(this could also be a somewhat lovecraftian perspective, that people worship and need these gods that if they exist, could very likely hate their worshippers and doubters alike) So i do belive that the song is about people`s need for religion, and sort of a sutle mockery of the said believers of whatever religion in question.
But i get struggling with Jen`s vocal style, i struggled with it myself, what helped me in the beginning was viewing Jen`s vocals as an extention of Tomas Haake`s drumming, but now i love Jen`s vocal style, Jens does really add a lot of dynamics to Meshuggah`s music and he`s understading of rythme and when to enter with his vocals in the rythme pattern.

I've seen them live a few times and it's absoloutly correct to say that Meshuggah live is more like a religious experience of getting into flow state and staying there for 2 hours. To listen to music that is so crushing yet so meditative is quite the experience, like finding calm in the middle of a tsunami wall of sound. An astonishing trip I highly recommend

Seconded. I have seen hundreds of metal sets before finally catching Meshuggah last year. There is nothing else like it, it's wholly unique and everyone should make it a bucket list item while Meshuggah is still "young" enough to play the material in person. Great video! It's so refreshing seeing Judson able to process Meshuggah constructively; like 'that state' he talks about. Most people that I've shown their music, usually don't get to that point :')
    - We really need Judson to experience and process "Sublevels" from Destroy, Erase, Improve - I think he'd really enjoy how dynamic it is and in my opinion, it really creates its own 'state' too!

  • @archerdoubleO

+33 for featuring one of my favorite bands again. Meshuggah's album Koloss is about religion and seeing as especially Judson likes lyrics, I think the lyrics of the opening track I Am Colossus are brilliant. Could do that song, but if Judson's interested he could also just check the lyrics and spare his ears lol. Cool you mentioned gnosticism Jud! Speaking of Gnosticism, fun fact: The Matrix is heavily inspired by Gnosticism to the point that you could quite decently argue the movies just *are* gnostic-christian. In this interpretation the Architect in the second movie (the old bearded dude in white with all the TV's) would be the Demiurge - the false God of the world he rules.
    Cheers guys!

Absolutely love you mentioning an overlap with RATM Judson, because I've spoken to the band and they dislike the term math-metal that people often use, as you're right, it is entirely about the feel and the groove. Can personally say Mårten Hagström (guitarist, composes most stuff) approved of 'groove-metal' when I mentioned to him that'd be my word for it at a backstage meeting. It's funny bc if you turn the sound off at a Meshuggah concert you could practically put hip hop over it. So yeah the vocals are always the barrier with Meshuggah, but otherwise I feel Judson totally dialed into what the band goes for, at least partially, which is is cool.
An an interesting sidenote the bassist is actually a really good jazz bassist. I hope you guys do a song that features more solos, because the guitarists got a really jazzy Alan Holdsworth inspiration to them.

Actually, demiurge comes from Plato's philosophy. Demiurge means "the master crafter". He believed that there were two worlds, the world of ideas and our world. Everything in our world was created based on an idea of the superior world. The demiurge was the one that could see the ideas, take matter, and use it to create a physical thing or creature based on what he had seen. So he is kind of like a creator god, but without the religious aspect of gods, it was just used to explain how things were created.

Funny to hear you guys talk about Vildhjarta again. Meshuggah have very groovy songs, but they're usually stand-alone tracks.
What Vildhjarta do best is the album experience. There are so many intertwining layers of atmosphere, grooves and riffs that all call back and forth to each.
In the middle of their album Masstaden Under Vatten they have an entire 6 minute song comprised of riffs from the first album recontextualized.
I love Meshuggah, but Vildhjarta are simply the best at what they do.

Their magic is that 95% of the music is written in 4/4 time. It's mental riffage set to 4/4 drumming. It's exactly what metal has always needed to get more popular. You can actually move to this music. All the time.

Great video as always guys! Would love to see some Be'lakor! They're one of my favorite bands of all time, up there with TBDM (though different styles). Songs I'd suggest as starters:
    -Countless Skies
    -In Parting
    -An Ember's Arc
    -Much More Was Lost
Those second 2 are part of concept albums that tell stories. An Ember's Arc is the start of a story for its album and it's about the fusion in the sun creating a photon of light, so there's no needed context other than "it continues from there". Much More Was Lost is the last song of an album, so just for context the people that the kids come across in their adventures in that song are references to victims of tragic lives in the other songs. It's about the kids losing their innocence and blissful ignorance of the sadness of the world so to speak. The album as a whole is a collection of tragic stories of people living around a mountain over time
