Tim Henson once commented that he creates melodies using midi and then finds a way to learn them on guitar, and that's insane
Jason Richardson taught him to do that when they were initially working on Champagne together way back in the day.
In his how to make a riff series, he just plays piano, and then transcribes it.
Yes, I remember Jason Richardson mentioning that he initially develops his guitar parts on a PC before learning them. Occasionally, if the tempo is too fast, he typically decreases the BPM by 2, although he avoids reducing it by 10 as it would result in a peculiar sound
The entire first necrophagist album was written this way using gp6 and it was figured out on real instruments then re-recorded
Unfortunately, that's exactly what it sounds like. Tim plays like a bobble headed robot so it fits the sound and is creative but this "music" does absolutely nothing for me. I've tried. It is on the level of an EMU SP1600 with 16th note high-hats, 808's and some talking. Just dreadful to my ears in my opinion. The compositional element most lacking is the chord progression which is void of any creativity.
It's awesome that even Judson, who leaves me speechless at times, has people to leave him speechless.

Even as a non-musician it sounds like deconstructed music, mathematical rather than emotional. Despite that I can obviously still be astounded by the skill of it all.
I've heard Polyphia described as "Math Rock", some songs are more math-y than others. Playing God is both absolutely insane levels of technicality and just incredible music, check it out if you havent.@@Sharky1986

The trumpet at the end of the song makes sense in the whole composition of the album from start to finish. The entire album is insane. I strongly suggest that you listen to the entire album from start to finish even if it's not for content. There's a brass band and even a jazz fusion track on there. Amazing stuff. Genre blending at its finest.
Trumpet player is half of the production duo brasstracks and they produced the whole album. They totally get the groove, funk, and jazz elements of Polyphia. Their albums are great as well. Dude plays trumpet, keys, bass, guitar, and his partner plays the drums.

Polyphia is from Texas. Tim played violin as a little kid and got into metalcore fairly young so he's had chops for quite a while. To your point about the computers, they've written songs by taking a basic pop chord progression, throw it in the DAW and just play around with it like a hip hop producer does. Sometimes they'll take a lead part and throw it in an arpeggiator, and then learn it on the guitar, throwing all of their thumping and harmonic craziness into it as the songwriting process develops.
There are actually two chord progressions - the song begins with an 1min -> 7 -> 6 -> 5min -> 5maj progression - as noted only the quiet synth pad actually plays the chords, while the interest is generated by the melodic "icing" on the vanilla cake. When the video location switches to the rooftop, the progression changes slightly to 1min -> 7 -> 6 -> 4min -> 6 -> 7. Again the interest is generated by the melodic "icing" over the now-chocolate cake ... and Steve Vai's contribution is an interesting study in contrasts: Henson tends to a very staccato style, while LePaige adds a bit of more classic rock lead - then Vai adds his characteristic swoopy gliss-laden take - leading to a wonderful blending of contrasting styles - then finished off by the lush trumpet cherry on top!

Tosin is the one who taught Tim how to thump and I think they have done concerts together. There is a lot of love between those two bands.

The trumpet is "BrassTracks" they have some great videos on UA-cam. He is featured on the first track of the album, "Genesis". One thing that I never hear mentioned about Polyphia's (Tim's) compositions is the connection to classical music in the way he takes a melody and expands it in different directions. To me, their songs are like mini classical pieces that are highly condensed and applied to funky up-tempo rhythms. Each song is a musical journey. The music tells a story. If you listen to "40oz", the music subtly reflects the different stages of drinking from the euphoria, to the mood swings, and finally to the slow crash at the end. Some of my favorite other pieces are "Reverie", "The Audacity" & "Playing God" (also from the latest album), "Goose", "Yas"... and too many others to list. Their entire discography is amazing and well worth a deep dive into their older material. ..... One final note... Check out "Finale". Its the oldest track I have heard from them with their original drummer. They were amazing right from the start and have evolved with each new album.
Interesting perspective! I see them more as a pop-goes-prog band now, or the other way around. Their chord progressions are always very 'simple' and poppy, but they spice it up to the max and rework those poppy progressions into something proggy and guitar-intricate.
The coolest thing is how they can take something very recognizable (stereotypical?) of a certain genre and make it their own with all the crazy stuff and modern metal sensibilities, while keeping the heart of the original vibe.
I could see their older projects being more classically inspired as they seemed to meander a bit more in their melodies and leads, where lately they tend to keep the melodies a bit more simple and the leads/riffs are more focused around motifs are repeating ideas (which I love about them).

I commented a while back suggesting Polyphia (as many others have no doubt). Ego death was a great first choice. Shows where they are now and each band member gets to shine a bit in it. Also showcases their weird take on the classic four chord pop song haha. How much complexity can you pack into a 4 chord progression? Polyphia: "Yes"
My personal favorite song is Reverie... it's not showboaty like most of them (sure it's technically impressive but that's not the focus), it's all about the melody. It's so smooth and elegant it really stands out to me as one of their better pieces. In my younger days I was very impressed by technical prowess... but over the years of developing some decent chops myself I'm now less interested in witnessing thousands of hours of muscle memory and more interested in the storyline. Can you make the guitar sing?
Steve Vai sings in this song. His part is the simplest, yet the most beautiful. He says more at the end of the piece than the young bucks do, even though the number of notes he hits is less than 10 seconds of one of their sections of the song. I'm oversimplifying to prove a point, but what makes Polyphia so unique is their ability to match this intense complexity with a catchy melody.
TLDR; Reverie is a masterpiece. Smooth, elegant and beautiful DESPITE it's complexity.

Polyphia are the GOAT. One thing that occurs to me after multiple watches of this music video is that each guitar player sits on the "throne", in the first section (the white room) it's Tim. Then in the warehouse when Scott goes off, he sits on it. Then Steve sits on it in his introduction on the roof. Really cool detail that goes to show it think that Ego Death is about several "egos" coming together to make greatness.
I was hoping Judson would eventually see Polyphia and be blown away. There's another guy on UA-cam who's amazing, Berried Alive, does amazing things on guitar
Berried alive sounds a lot more complicated than it is, and I am totally not hating on that man's work because he's a compositional genius, but he also has a secret weapon on his guitar, that Kill switch gives him that epic signature sound that most musicians only get through tedious editing but he's really crafted his own unique sound that can't be mistaken.
@@syzygy2464respectfully intended but the kill switch is not what makes his sound, itsa component but its not the only part. He's got really tasty chops and excellent use of the trem bar among so many other qualities. Literally nobody else sounds like Charles, buckethead has kill switch button chops also but sounds not like berried alive.
without the killswitch the entire signature of his sound is just gone. Of course he has tasty chops, he's a damn badass player, but he has developed a style and the signature of that style is use of the kill switch and trem liberally. Nothing wrong with it, doesn't diminish him in any way.

@@syzygy2464 I'll give that it's a big part of his sound, but there's so much to his sound. He does a lot of artificial harmonics, disonent chords, pick scrapes, pick taps, finger tapping, bends to transfer bends, and "computer" tapping to name a few, he also utilizes different picking angles to get sharper sounds ( often these are not desirable to do, but he makes them sound good ) the kill switch is a part of it for sure but he's got so many good techniques under his belt and performs a lot of brakes just by effective damping and string muting. Ive tabbed out some of his songs and though they are sometimes not crazy difficult to play note wise there's a lot of sound that he creates to accompany those notes . I heard berried alive for the first time maybe a year ago and was blown away to discover it's a 2 peice band... respectfully intended but his sound would still be recognized and unique even without a kill switch button .

Tim Henson is sick af, easily one of the best guitarists of my generation. But Scottie LePage is not to be passed over, that man is just as good as Tim. And their drummer and bassist are both amazing but specifically their drummer is an actual GOD. I know of one story where they were at a concert and they play to a click track so their live performances are just as disgustingly clean and amazing as their studio work, but Clay the drummer's click broke for some reason and an audio tech just sat there and tapped his leg along to the click track and he played like one of their most complicated songs spot fucking on just with this dude tapping his leg to help him stay on click. Amazing amazing drummer, amazing band.

The title of the song is so fitting. Whatever ego you might have in anything you do, watching these gods playing will make you drop it cause you have yet to reach the peak in whatever you’re doing. And at the peak it is pure mastery and playfulness, like a dance. You can do impossible stuff in a casual matter and it looks effortless, just like how they displayed it in here.

I'm also wearing a Cryptopsy shirt today! I've loved that band for decades and I had the pleasure of playing in a band with one of Flo's old friends on drums. Our drummer (Jay) is one of those crazy prodigies; he was in his brother's death metal band (Blood of Christ) when he was still a preteen and learned to blast.
They opened for Cryptopsy on one of their early tours of Canada when they were touring for their first full length album, Blasphemy Made Flesh. Flo was quite impressed by this little kid who could hammer out blast beats and they became fast friends and have remained in touch to this day, around three decades later.
I had the pleasure of meeting the band a few times over the years; awesome guys.
All that begs the questions of when you're going to throw Judson into the deep end with some Cryptopsy like "Phobophile" or "Slit Your Guts"... Or another Canadian death metal band that has really exploded lately, Archspire, would be quite interesting to see Judson's reaction. I've met them a couple times too and have been a fan of their's since my ex-bandmate from that same band I was in with Jay was the promoter for their first ever Tech Trek tour in Toronto back in 2014. They ended up crashing at my place after the show!
Either way, some crazy Canadian death metal should be on the menu eventually!
EDIT: Maybe start him off easier with some First Fragment or Beyond Creation... But considering you already showed him some deathcore, I think Judson can not only handle it, but could appreciate the music on its own terms!

@@Greatmeasures Awesome! I love that song, but I'm still partial to their earlier work, probably because I've known them since their inception.
I had the honor of backing up for some of Forrest's (their bassist on Beyond Creation's first two albums and the former teacher of their current bassist, Hugo) previous/other bands (Quo Vadis and Augury) back in the early 2000's, so their first album holds a special place for me and I still think "Omnipresent Perception" is their best song.
I still like their latest album and they're apparently working on their fourth release; I'm sure that album will be great too! Hopefully Judson enjoys it! At the very least I'm sure he'll appreciate the songwriting and technical ability of that band!
Related to my initial post, Forrest was still in the band on that first ever Tech Trek Archspire tour and Beyond Creation were the headliner, as Archspire had yet to make a name for themselves at that point in their career. I've seen Beyond Creation play a number of times over the years, including a few times with Archspire.
Considering the tours both those bands have been on lately, I doubt I'll ever be able to see them in a small venue again, so I'll cherish that experience, but I'd much rather give that up to see both bands get the recognition and success they deserve!

Yall should check out some of the vids of Tim and Scott talking about how they write and create songs. They basically take basic pop/hip hop chord progressions and arpeggiate everything but they do it in reverse in a sense they will write parts and then learn how to play them.
