Loved the video. Our family has been crabbing the upper Chesapeake for many decades. I had to chuckle as you headed out in that jon boat with one crab trap. We have five kids and when they were young, I quickly realized that I couldn't catch enough crabs with a dozen traps to feed our tribe. My son and I learned to use a 1000 foot trot line and that made all the difference. We could head out at sunrise and have a bushel of crabs by 10 am on an average day. Your guest was right... in Maryland, eating crabs is a family event, not just a meal. Just as a baseball game is an excuse to sit in the sun on a summer day with friends and a beer, so a crab feast is a chance to sit with the family at a picnic table all afternoon and pick crabs. The kids will eat, then play cornhole, then eat some more. The grown ups eat and laugh over stories, some of which are true, and all of which bring smiles. As for the mustard, hands down yes. A crab without the mustard is like a hotdog without mustard. It good when it could be great. Also... we (and most Marylanders) use way more spice than I saw on the crabs in the video. We pile it on. I am an Old Bay guy... your guest was a JO Spice guy... this is the Ford vs Chevy debate among Maryland crabbers. If you are interested in the history of crab spices, let me know.. Its an interesting tale. Cheers, Curt Russell
great comment, thanks Curt - glad you are here. Not sure exactly which clip you were referencing with the single crab trap but we set a total of (I think) 7 that trip - just had to make several trips in a REALLY small jon boat! We're also somewhat limited in how many we can feasibly transport when we travel. Learning to crab with a trot line is definitely on our list for this year and we're looking forward to learning how to do it. I have to ask - between old bay and JO spices - which one is the Ford and which one is the Chevy? thank you very much for watching and for your support!!
I dread seeing a pile I need to pick, but after I've ate a few, picked many more and then stocked up on crab cakes, soups, and meat, I'm ready to catch and pick more crabs. Free delicious nourishment from mother nature. Very grateful. I pick every piece of them too. You can get a half pound of meat out of 3 heavy crabs.
It really is awesome. Great to just take our time and sit around with family and friends while you work through the pile. Thank you for watching and supporting our channel!!
Thanks Jason! That's probably my preference, but we are always up for tying new things! Always fun to catch a bunch of crabs and sit around and pick with family and friends.
I'm from SC and where I'm from, we eat the mustard! We don't sprinkle our seasoning over the crab, we boil it. I personally tried dipping the crab in the seasoning and it just wasn't for me but the vinegar trick, tripped me out in a good way!! I just love blue crabs!! I have a bushel coming from Maryland to Kentucky tomorrow!
It's not shit, it's the crab's hepatopancreas. I know; that doesn't make it sound much better. However, the mustard is the tastiest part. True lovers of callinectes sapidus (the beautiful savory swimmer) eat all the mustard in the middle as well as in the points. Hell, you can eat the other guts too! Everything but the devils (lungs). I eat most of it, minus the "carrots" (roe) in the females. Just not a fan of the texture.
Crab mustard is delicious to eat but it unfortunately contains toxic chemicals. If you live off upper east coast like New Jersey or where the vast oil spilled in the past, don't eat it!

Absolutely.
MMMM! Love the video guys, thanks for taking the challenge and having some fun with this. 🤘
Thanks Sam! We had a great time and are glad to have met you guys.
Just had crab mustard . Delicious
The mustard is the best part it’s so creamy. If the crab don’t have it I don’t want it.
The mustard adds that pop to spaghetti and crab 🦀 🍝

we are so glad it helped! thank you!
You can always Google it.
Isn’t it toxins and carcinogens in the crabs environments……..?
@@lakerboy16if there are any toxins, heavy metals, pollutants, I think it would accumulate in the fat, aka the mustard.
Love love love crabs 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀
Love too eat the mustard in 🦀
So what is the crab poop everyone talks about and what is the squiggly thing?
I can’t believe you were in a Charleston house that didn’t have a big steamer pot somewhere. 🤷♂️ I thought all the houses here came with one
Wife cracked up with the feet smell!!
Oh it did!!! Not an exaggeration - but somehow, adds a good flavor without the smell.
Mustard hell its crab shit!!!!

It's basically the crab's liver. You would call calves liver cow shit, would you? Just get educated, man.
