Thanks for the detailed review- i just got this monitor and trying to figure it out to get the most out of it
thanks man I watched 3 reviews and you confirmed my choice on this one
Np!
I bought a used PG278Q on eBay that was still under warranty, broke within 2 days if me getting it so I opened an RMA and after a few days of it being there got a call from the service center saying they don't have the part to fix it and offered a new PG279Q as a replacement since my previous PG278Q was still under warranty :'))) best part is I'm selling my old monitor to a buddy for $200, so at the end of the day I got a brand new PG279Q for $150 USD :')))
Hahaha amazing
Probably one of the better reviews. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man!
I thought my monitor or new graphics card was faulty because of the bad ghosting. Came from a cheaper TN panel and never noticed ghosting before. Thanks for showing video. Hopefully they release an improved version with less ghosting.
Hi, what you prefer between ASUS TUF VG27AQZ or ASUS ROG PG279Q ? for the same price
nvdia vision 2 can be able to run on this ? plz answer
It's so damn fluid when you move your mouse i like it
Very nice review, thinking of getting this screen. Cool windows wallpapers also hah, where you get all those from? =)
Thanks buddy - they are mine I got from the internet ages ago!
I've had an intermittent problem with mine. When the PC is starting up, or rebooting, I have noticed that I can see what looks like a duplicate window behind. You can see a bit of the animated Windows circle of dots spinning around, in the left margin of the screen.
I actually contacted ASUS Technical Support because I couldn't find an up to date certified fritter on their web site. I was pleasantly surprised at the knowledge and helpfulness of being walked through finding, downloading, and installing the new driver. It fixed the image problem for a few weeks, but I still see it once in a while.
This hasn't happened yet during any gameplay.
There is a bit of white light noticeable on both sides, if the screen is totally black.
I have been running it through a Display Port, at 144hz but haven't tried it any higher, or the Overdrive featured in this video.
Overall, I love it so far.
thanks for sharing
Would HDR really make a noticeable difference?
I bought it. No regerts. It makes my other monitors look like garbage
Thanks for sharing!
No regerts indeed. Do not eat regerts near this monitor. I'm buying this.
Roy Martinez does it also give an fps cap? It gives me an fps cap of 165fps and if i run csgo on my other monitor i get 400fps

*What is the default refresh rate of this monitor?*
144Hz or 165Hz
What is the maximum overclocked refresh rate?
Have it and i love my monitor
nice :)
With monitors you should also show a black screen so people can see any clouding/glow and quality of blacks.
the blb on these is unacceptable at this price, and the build quality is garbage, its not well built at all, you can flex the whole panel by barely putting pressure on any corner, there are tons of forums on how shit this thing is.
it's hard for a camera to pick it up, that's why I don't do it :/
I think it's just luck of the draw. Mine came with no noticeable back light bleed. There's literally nothing wrong with mine.
then make a black person stand next to it to test the quality of black levels
Travis Law I just got the TN version, much better then all the bleeding
Wish you’d compare it to Acer predator 27 IPs.
Best review i have seen. Thx.
aww thanks! Don't forget to sub and like :)
After building a new PC (i7 7700k/GTX1080Ti) i am in the market for a 1440p monitor. I play a lot of CSGO so 144hz is a must. Now i now have a BenQ Xl2430t TN panel and i don't like the colors. After research i think the Asus PG279Q and Acer XB271HU are the best IPS gaming monitors i can get. I doubt between this 2 and Acer XF270HU, is G-Sync worth 200/250 dollar price difference? Or i could wait for the PG27UQ? What do you recommend?
Heya!
Well G-sync question is really up to you. If you play CSGO, G-sync is pointless. I personally own and love the XF270HU and that's the monitor I'd recommend.
It's the best monitor I've ever come across, period.
However, I've also been told - that recently the AOC AGON 1440p monitor costs around 1/3 of the price and for that (if you're on a tighter budget) should really look into that too.
US links below -
24in: amzn.to/2sxUEma
27in: amzn.to/2rlLllg
The AOC's don't have the same colour accuracy, but for the price...well hard to go wrong.
hello,
did you try it @1080p? I would like to know the monitor behavior with
titles that dont support 1440p yet like League of legends.
Would work - but I didn't try it!
Do you use the Display port cable or HDMI cable for gaming? and what's the difference if you don't mind me asking; noobie here; I just got one
Depends on the port version. To be on the safe side, always use DP when you've got the chance - it avoids problems
what settings did you have the monitor set at for right colours. I've set mine on fps mode what do you think of that
Put to standard/normal or user define and go from there - each to their own - I woudl have shown it in the video, if I didn't go on what's best for you. FPS setting is usually horrendous.
i didnt change anything just using fps mode and its amazing
Тhx for the video. I am using a u3415w dell... but am already sick and
tired of 60hz. Absolutely about to pull the trigger of the 165 IPS
Asus... last thing holding me is that it is 2 years old... what can you
advise?
Why 165Hz? Why not save yourself a lot of money and just a standard 144hz? Such as this: amzn.to/2tCqdg3
Do you even calibrate bro ?
Good video ! But my cuestión is wen you set game fps up in the corner how to take away? Is there all the time?
That FPS counter is from my GPU :)
So yes, you can - glad you like the vid.
I bought it from a friend of mine for about 600 euro ;) great monitor! really good upgrade over my Samsung BX 2450 LED 60 fps monitor.
wow that's still expensive :O
My monitor is almost new, retail price is 1000 here so... :))
RIP
Does it have a-sync support ?
Is it worth to buy it now? for 350$?
the dimensions on the website say the monitor is 55cm tall, luckily I have the same desk as you so love your reviews for telling if a monitor will fit. :p
haha amazing :D
would you prefer a standard size monitor to this over an ultrawide like the x34?
Yup!
can you post your colour setings about fps? Thanks
What you are describing is not actually ghosting. It is an overdrive artifact called overshoot. Overdrive works by increasing the voltage sent to each pixel, which causes the pixel to respond faster but also causes it to "overshoot" the color it was intended to display. It's not very noticeable when tuned correctly because by the time the pixel starts to overshoot and display an incorrect color the monitor has already moved on to the next refresh. Normal mode on this monitor achieves this perfectly. However even with the extra tuning the AHVA panel still struggles to keep up with the 165Hz refresh rate. At 165Hz the panel refreshes every 6ms, and the pixel response time on normal mode is 6ms. The pixels only *just barely* have enough time to update before the monitor refreshes again. This is where Extreme mode comes in, and that is the mode where you actually get the advertised 4ms GtG pixel response time. Though it might look ugly, there is much less motion blur in Extreme mode.
Great Channel and Review!
I was hoping you could give me some advice that would help me out greatly. I have narrowed my choice of gaming monitor between the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q that is shown in the video and the Acer Predator 34A QHD Curved Monitor, there is roughly a £150 price difference between the two which would be your preferred choice for a rig that is 90% used predominately for gaming. I have a GTX 1080 and I am looking to game in 1440p.
Any Help/Advice/Opinion you could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Heya - thanks!
Well those are radically different monitors - what are you looking for exactly - other than 144hz and 1440p?
My personal favourite and the monitor I actually use on a daily basis is the Acer XF270HU - best monitor to date.
totallydubbedHD thanks for the quick reply! I was happy with the Asus choice due to the high refresh rate, resolution (1440p) and the Gsync feature. But after watching a few videos yesterday people have been raving about the x34a as the greatest gaming monitor at roughly the same price point I was looking at. The ultra wide ratio aspect of the x34a has intrigued me but I'm not sure if it's just a gimmick or not. Have you used both for gaming? Is there much of a noticeable difference in the refresh rate between the two. If I am gaming in 1440p at ultra/high settings will upwards of 100hz refresh rate ever come into play?
Thanks again for your initial reply!
-Yes higher refresh rates will come into play
-I wouldn't believe everyone that reviews (ironic as I'ma reviewer) - but I'm honest, others are biased...
-Ultrawide isn't for everyone - I wouldn't get one, but I do see the appeal
-I wouldn't pay extra for anything above 144hz
-Make sure you check out the monitor I told you
I agree with your opinion on the colors. Do you think a color calibrater like something from xrite will help. With that?
It helps a little, but the panel is still washed out buddy
On the contrary. The colors are too saturated for my taste. And the white point is off. Can it tone down the colors and help. With the white point?
saturated? Then you might be on a weird setting.
No, just on racing standard. When I reset the monitor everything pops, but slightly too much, fatiguing my eyes... If it were less saturated like my old. Lg 2477mp it would have been easier on the eyes. Should I invest in a color calibrater or you think it isn't necessary? I tried using the tft Central ICC profile, and it didn't help much.
I think you're mode is wrong - go on standard or user and go from there?
Colour profiles do help - but they aren't always the best for the user.
The monitor features 100% sRGB (which is extremely good) when using sRGB mode but is lower when using other modes. Its not got an extremely high Adobe RGB gamut but that's reserved for professional grade monitors (video/graphic production)
had one of these, returned it because of BLB. now i have the acer xb1. gsync with csgo and other comp games is completely fine as long as you lock your fps below the monitor refresh rate, otherwise vsync kicks in.
Thanks for sharing!
Torn between this and the LG 32GK850G. The BLB has me concerned. I am after something with gsync, or would you recommend another?
That LG is a good'un. Just remember however, you can now get Gsync on almost every monitor that has freesync (if you have a 10 series Nvidia)
Interesting. So do you think even the LG 27GL850 might be worth a look?
@@kyuzorocks not tried that one so can't comment on it, sorry! Personally, I always recommend the: Acer XF270HUA; it's to me the best 144Hz 1440p monitor and doesn't cost as much as these 165Hz monitors (+ Gsync works)
What’s its peak brightness?
i need some advice here. which one is suit for you to pair with my strix 1070, asus pg248q or pg279q, to maximized use of my GPU??
The pg279q - it's a better monitor anyway!
Yes master!
Made Duananda PG279Q BUT if you don't want that price DO NOT go for the PG278Q.
Go with the PG279QR - get the one with the R at the end, it's the newer and better version of the PG278Q.
I think you mean the PG278QR, I have not seen the PG279QR version.
I have this monitor and im absolutely in love with it. When I play Dying Light f.ex if im on a rooftoop looking down I get seriously a funny feeling in my stomach, cuz im afraid of heights. I feel so immersed in games and the COLOR production.. its just too impressive, Rocket League f.ex, man I cant even describe it, u have to see it. This monitor is worth every penny in my opinion, because it gives every second of your game the best possible experience. Yes a lot of ppl complain about backlight bleed and I have some too but as long as its not right in the center u should be happy. Mine has some in the corners and I dont even care much about them, they are not that bad. Also ppl take photos with their smartphones and the photos taken have wrong exposure meaning on the photos it shows more light than there is actually in real life. I seriously recommend this monitor, going from a TN 1920x1080p 60hz this was mindblowing.
well from that, of course
AlexanderPews I disagree, phone photos don’t expose more BLB. I took with my iPhone and checked with my eyes to compare, I see the same crappy BLB. But anyway, is it fine to watch Netflix on? I was going for Acer predator but costs too much in my country..
Hi do you still have the monitor?
Hello, Since this monitor is ips is it a glossy screen, or does this monitor have a anti-glare screen
No it has a matte screen!
why is the montiro lagging so much?
Hi brother if i want play competitive games i shloud put OD off or normal or extreme? Thanks
Extreme, but only if there's no severe ghosting
How does 1080p media look on this screen? Like UA-cam and Netlfix?
looks fine
thanks
*What is the default refresh rate of this monitor?*
144Hz or 165Hz
What is the maximum overclocked refresh rate?
I covered this in the video: 3:26
@@TotallydubbedHD I think it's factory overclocked to 165Hz from 144Hz.
Because at a website termed as *displayninja* it was said (by the author) that it's factory overclocked to 165Hz.
I bought mine for $598.02 USD on Ebay. It was brand new, open box from a reputable retailer, NCIX. No dead pixels and no noticeable back light bleed. I really have nothing bad to say about this monitor. Even the price I got it for is such a steal.
Yes but I was a really cool guy, looked at tftcentral data and discovered that the tn panel version was not only faster, but had less delta e after calibration. And, it supports 3d vision
you won the panel lottery. congrats.
Mr Dibidi Bop and how much you paid for it?
when i saw your profile pic i thought there was a small hair on my screen

Hello! I hope you can help me on this. I'm really interested to get this, however I don't have a desktop, I live abroad so I bought an asus gaming laptop (asus rog strix scar ii). I'm wondering if it will affect the ram, if the laptop can take it, I stream & record my games sometimes, I use elgato hd60 s, sometimes i connect my nintendo switch too. So i dont know if i should push through getting a 2nd monitor. Do you think it will help me? Thanks in advance. Sorry for the bad english.
What you could be worried about is if your laptop can output the native resolution via your display output. You'll need to look into that, as unless you got HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2-1.4 you'll not get the output resolution
RAM won't be affected
@@TotallydubbedHD thanks for the reply!! It has those you mentioned. Wheww! I saw another 2nd hand monitor here, its acer predator xb271hu, its cheaper and it seems the same with this monitor. Do you think it'll be fine?

totallydubbedHD I'm not getting it for netflix but if I'm done playing and wanna watch some movies or series on this monitor, just like how i use my xbox one/ps4... my pc is arriving next week by the way and I'm really considering getting this monitor
Hey, would anyone still recommend buying the monitor in 2023. I found a PG279QE for £150/$180.
For that price yeah
I switched from a QNIX 2710 to a BenQ XL2730Z and don't miss IPS at all. The QNIX was like staring into the sun with the brightness all the way up to eliminate flickering.
PWM flicker is another thing...you could have always gotten the Crossover 2950HD ;)
+totallydubbedHD yeah, my daughter had been wanting my QNIX for quite a while and I wanted a 144Hz panel to pair with my 1070. I "thought" 96Hz was really nice but 144 is a huge improvement. Of course, now my daughter wants to play Overwatch on my PC instead of hers now 😟
haha, legendary :D
Yeah I use my QNIX as main and a TN 1080p 144hz as my comp monitor.
Can someone explain to me at 6:25 when he alt tabbed into CS go is that a defect monitor. Didn't you see that static image?
just the lag on the tab lol
why is it lagging? o.O is it due to your computer or the monitor ?
Honestly don't know :/
I went with the TN one.. the new PG278QR Simply because of response time (FPS games) colours are pretty close to the IPS so was a no brainer. Both are great monitors.
thanks for sharing
Soggy I also got that one today. much better then the ips, only drawback is the ag coating. but better then the bleeding
It was the Bleeding and the 4ms time that put me off the IPS. But yeah It's a great monitor.

I don't use it bud - I just got it for review then had to send it back!
Most mainstream monitors don't have dead pixels, so I wouldn't worry about that :)
Ok. Thanks anyway. I just came across a lot of people having major issues with this monitor

The price on this thing is still atrocious considering all of the complaints. Still if you get this from Amazon it's not really a big deal because of their awesome exchange policies. Albeit Still shouldn't need to rely on that tho for the price
What monitor color settings do you use?
I can't remember I go on custom usually and go through what I find is the best settings to calibrate it.
so out of the box you dont get 144 hz ? you need to 'overclock 'it ? is this in november 2016 the best 17 inch 1440p 144 hz panel available ? tnx

It is a nice Monitor if you can ignore the IPS Glow and the backlight bleeding. I went to three monitors, all of them had this problem; the best thing is that now I am stuck with it. This is not OK for such an expensive piece of hardware. Sorry ASUS I don't think I would go for another monitor from you again.
Agreed
Is it visible when actually using the monitor instead of looking for the back glow with the screen showing just black colour?
Irrehaare for me it is viaible as i use a black desktop wallpaper and play ultra dark modded games.
What do you suggest as an alternative? I am basically wanting the 27inch, 1440p, 165Hz, 1ms response. both Acer and Asus seem to have very similar quality control issues :'( I really want to buy a new monitor but these issues are putting me off.
Should I go with a ViewSonic perhaps? I dont care about rgb nor the looks of the stand as I will be using a separate monitor arm anyway. ViewSonic XG2703-GS QHD 165Hz G-Sync 27in IPS Gaming Monitor
wich GPU is the best for this monitor ? Because i bought it and i have 1060 6 gb
1060 will struggle to output 100Hz+ at 1440p with high settings
Very nice with 165hz refresh, but because it has IPS panel the 4MS input lag is a big drawback for gaming....so,what is the point?
It's not a big drawback - people get this misconception about IPS and 4ms vs 1ms
I defy anyone to sit in front of an IPS and TN panel and differentiate 3ms of response time. The thing you're going to notice more than anything is the input lag from mouse/keyboard -> monitor.
That is not real ghosting. You should have seen rear projection tv's of the 90's. That is ghosting

totallydubbedHD what if you had all low settings on CSGO with this monitor and 1080TI with 7700k processor? Will the frame rate increase? And will it be good enough for live streaming to twitch, etc. thanks :)
Why do you need more fps, where does this obsession come from??
totallydubbedHD lol there are many reasons why certain people like me want more fps, I would like to livestream without my frame rate dropping dramatically, and I would also like to game on a 165hz monitor for the smoothest gaming experience. I think it would be cool to livestream CSGO at 200-400 frames!

I really don't know which to pick, the two top brands/models both have significant complaints, im almost even considering buying the similar Dell model as I know Dell at least is great with returns......Past black light bleed issue with a monitor I bought a number of years ago.
To add to 6:10, the ASUS MG279Q is 27 inches, 144hz, 2560x1440, IPS with *Free-sync*. And for $200 less than this one. Just in case anyone with an AMD card was looking for a monitor like this but won't benefit from the G-sync. No need to pay that Nvidia premium.
good shout
Kadomex pretty niche though, considering the overwhelming number of people who buy Nvidia GPU instead of AMD.
MolotovBurner100 I don't think the amount of Nvidia buyers is overwhelming compared to AMD. Nvidia currently controls the high-end market but I think more people probably look to AMD for mid-range and lower. Especially when you consider that $200 or so G-sync premium I mentioned, going Nvidia can be expensive for the average consumer who doesn't wanna settle for V-sync.
i got a 1070 and cant choose between the mg279q and pg279q. theyre mostly the same and i dont want to spend more than needed, but i couldnt use freesync so im consider to go for the g-sync but im not sure if its realy worth or will benefit me enough to pay the premium. With my current tft i dont notice issues (old samsung 20/21inch tn60hz (probably)) so im not sure what i have to expect without free/g -sync.
really depends on the game tbh - if you're playing LoL Dota CSGO those types of games, you won't really benefit from it - if you play BF1, then you will - that's my opinion.
Mine has massive BLB and dead pixel
This monitor is digustingly good for playing games, but i guess you should expect it with its price tag
Does this work with xbox???
Would be pointless for console. Just get the 1080p 60hz version

Had my monitor for about 2 months now. Put a new wallpaper on the desktop and the banding is terrible. Anybody else with this monitor notice bad banding in dark scenes. Especially grey to black transitions, like a night sky in gta 5
im pretty sure i mentioned that in the review?
i think you are confusing the input lag with the response time . Overdrive reduces input lag but increases response time(more ghosting) .
I know :)! Cheers anyway, sorry if it seems like I was confusing them!
***** just a little mistake i know you know the difference and i like your reviews. This or the pg278q you think? The 4ms vs 1ms in gaming are noticeable?

lol thats an option for me as well but since you ve tested so many monitors do you actually see a difference between 4ms and 1ms in terms of gaming?
then take it from me, as a person who ranks in the top 3% of CS:GO player globally - it's the best monitor around.
4vs1ms - there's a extremely minimal difference - 98% of users won't notice it. I sit in the 2% that will, and even then I game on one that's 4ms (as quoted response time =/= actual performance of monitor)
display port make a dif
first 😎
you can get this monitor for 599$ now
I know this is over 3 years old... but is that baby Yoda??
Haha yes
I got this monitor for $50 on face book
g-sync off for csgo. good video like
Haha :D thanks
Why?
totallydubbedHD - Pls test Dota 2 and cs 1.6~
if you think that monitor is expense, is because you dont see the price in my country, here in Brazil, this same monitor cost 4500 reais. Coin of country, our governament fuck us with taxes
Give me the best GAMING monitor for 1000£ with no ghosting and more issues like that
, 144hz-165hz, 1440p and g-sync and 27". ty ahead :D
there isn't a flawless monitor, no matter what price you pay. Personally, my favourite is the Acer XF270HUA, but that doesn't have GSync. If you want it - it's the LG 32GK850G
Is this monitor 1440 p?
I've said it in the video ^^
2560 x 1440
Bought this in 2020. This is pretty much everything you ever wished a gaming monitor could be.
Glad you like it
what game is that? 7:14
CS:GO
totallydubbedHD Counter Strike? which one?
CSGO= counter strike global offensive lol
Tempo thks bro!
Mine has massive BLB and dead pixels. I'm very disappointed for a $800 monitors with crappy quality control.
Oh really? Can't you take it back?
RMA it but they don't have it in stock anymore so I'll just get a full refund instead. I'll probably get the Acer Predator one instead.
Glad you got your money back at least!
Unfortunately, I can't even get the Acer one since it sold out almost everywhere or the price is inflated. I think I'm going to wait for the AOC AG271QG gaming one. I have an AOC 27" IPS that I bought back in 2011 and it is still running flawless compared to all these Asus and Acer. I'm sort of disappointed at Acer and Asus quality control tbh. A $800 monitors should not have these kind of issues.
Here is the link to the AOC gaming IPS one.

Can you do an review on it if you could your hands on one ?
Thanks
I'm hoping to get that in a few months, but let's see
Why isn't g-sync not recommended for csgo, #totallydubbedHD ?
it's pointless, as there's hardly any tearing and it induces very minor input lag
Thanks. And you said "not the best in terms of color accurary on an ips". What is your recommendation on this?
Thanks. And you said "not the best in terms of color accuracy on an ips". What is your recommendation on this?
depends on what you're looking for - for example, a Crossover monitor or even a QNIX offer better - but aren't aimed at hardcore gamers etc.
You've also got the ones like the Acer XF270HU
Gsync is used for PC builds that can't reach the monitor's refresh rate, boosting it up... Since in CSGO you already have 60-300 fps, depending on your monitor's RR, it would be useless to use Gsync, since you're trading input lag in favor of no benefits. That's why it's not recommended.
I want this monitor but I can't buy because the stand is hideous.
haha!
I love how 2560 x 1440 144hz is barely stable after two years.
ASUS idea: lets make a 165hz one! I don't trust these to last at all and ugh G Sync price tag. FreeSync Master Race!
tell me about it man!
I am sticking with my BenQ 2560 x 1440 144hz FreeSync until 4K can do above 60hz on the new DP cables coming out eventually. The lower limit on the 4K are too high to allow for the driver adjustment AMD uses for when a Freesync panels FPS drops below it's lower limit causing judder that you don't see in the 144hz panels. Essentially 4K Freesync with a quick ass refresh and amazing pixel clock and scaler that can do 120hz will be the God Monitor in a few years. I will also have to drop the Fury X then for a card that can support DP 1.3 or 1.4 (or better if they manage HDMI support for 120hz 4K somehow).
the dream - 2017-18 IMO!
Yep at the earliest. I was considering just going 4K 60hz now but I cannot find a single panel I like at all. Have you tried any 4K panels for gaming that have freesync and are decent for gaming to get me through for a few years? The most competitive game I play is BF4 and aside that mostly play single player games via controller anyway. Be nice to play Deus Ex Mankind Divided at 4K on launch next month.
Nah bro - all the 60hz 4K ones are average at best. Their input lag and response time generally sucks :(
