***** Eh it's CLOSE to being the perfect pixel density for a desktop pc usage scenario. Acer has a 25" 1440p monitor that is available on amazon right now. Personally THAT , i think, is the sweet spot.
Yeah, that sounds a bit better, but with my desk arrangement, my monitor is pretty far away, so larger screens with slightly lower resolutions work better for me. (Currently running an old 2405 FPW 1080p 24")

Having owned a Asus 144hz monitor for the last 2 years, I know how nice they are. Unfortunately the one I have also has a Shiny Bezel! I wouldn't buy another. That small detail ruins this for me.... COME ON ASUS!
I just want to say that I really appreciate the video, audio, and general high production values of Linus and his crew. You guys really do a good job, and I just wanted to say thanks.
Good review, perhaps still missing stuff such as viewing angles, ips glow, backlight bleeding, power consumption, and actually testing the response time and colour accuracy with and without od but I guess most of your viewers don't miss that at all
144hz ips panel? Is this an april fools joke? Am I missing something? I thought IPS physically couldn't do that speed on a chemistry leve? Gotta be an april fools
Thomas H Then what am I missing? Seems kinda sudden for IPS to jump from 60-75hz to 144. I still smell a rat. Like I said, I didn't think ips could physically do that?
SoulDragonWithFlow That's the beauty of advancing technology, shit that was impossible/hard to do yesterday, is possible today! The panel is completely legit, it was released last week and everyone has said the same thing Linus has. Completely fact.
It's not that "new". Similar panel is being sold by Yamakasi (1440p/120Hz IPS native) for quite some time, but price tag says 1500$. If this is april fools, it is a bad one.
Just got one. It looks beautiful on the screen but also the design as well. The red ring looks great and the piano black finish looks upscale in person. Keep in mind that you can't switch the input over to any consoles, TV or anything. This is not a "con" it is just what this is, the best PC monitor there is.
To be fair... that monitor is very generic looking. At least the RoG Swift looks enthusiast grade and the stand is heavy and solid. This Acer monitor looks like all the others out there, looks like a 27inch, 60hz, 1080p monitor for £130.
***** Yup. I have an MG279Q and the 4ms response time is a killer for me. This monitor is going back because it is not fast enough in fast shooter games.
i have one on order. it the first monitor ive bought in 6 years-ish. it is damn expensive so im more comfortable now that ive seen this review. thanks for the piece of mind
It doesn't matter. Once you've experienced 1440p/1600p you can't go back, while 4K just isn't practical for most gamers. I've had a 30" 1600p display for several years now and I love it.
Apocalypto Širola No offence but that was ironic, as you earlier used the incorrect words and now you're calling me dumb. But hey, we got there in the end! :D
Idk. I'm using the swift and I feel like g-sync and 144hz can't be beat except for giving it an IPS panel... So this is pretty much as good as it gets and I would get this instantly if I wasn't already happy with the swift.
***** A monitor usually lasts for 5 years+ and its one of the most important parts for your pc. I will say it's justified, while a gpu usually last for around 2 years. Besides that titan x isn't worth it if you just wait for the 390x or 980ti.
Xardas105 You can get a 27" 1440p IPS monitor for $250, overclock it to 144hz and you have the same product minus g-sync. Only deluded idiots would spend $800 on a single monitor.
ihatemadmoe I know which monitor you are talking about mate. I have a friend that has one of those monitors, he managed to oc it only to 100hz. First of all those monitors are a risk not all can overclock to 144hz not like that matters alot, but the main issue with those oc monitors is that they really fuck up the colors. When you OC those monitors they turn from decent ips panels to really crappy ips panels. Linus said in the video is that this is one of the best ips monitors that he has ever tried, it almost sounds like it was a april fools. I would rather have this monitor with a op ips panel vs a panel thats pretty bad after OC.
ihatemadmoe However I do also agree with you. The price they are asking for is ALOT, only worth for those who can really afford it and it's a better choice over the asus rog 144hz 1440p monitor which comes at the same price.
I'm a play station fan boy... sadly like many i never realized the power of a pc vs console!! Into I went to a new buddy's house he's like u game I'm like yeah okay ? What do you know about pcs ? Ahh nothing after a crash course of a pc I was like holy hell I'm missing out fml so after learning of the master race a.k.a "bad ass pc" I'm now switching over and building my very first gaming rig and I will be using this monitor ^_^
Honestly guys don't buy this monitor. Just spent 1150 aud to get one and the back-light bleed is atrocious. Did some digging and apparently 40% of people who have bought this display have experienced bad back-light bleed. Shame on you Acer and shame on you Linus. You were the sole reason i bought this monitor and i am devastated at how terrible it looks when viewing movies as the black letterboxes are in no way black
Altimate Mohamed Because it's more expensive, stand is garish and the only thing different about it is that it has speakers? Seriously the specs are exactly the same, I highly doubt the panel itself looks so much better it's worth another $40-50.
it has far better QC than this one and it has the zero frame design which i think is even better than the ASUS one and also the 165Hz overclock and now you get a DisplayPort and an HDMI port (G-SYNC v2), much better UI than this one, no more glossy panels and its much cheaper compared to the ASUS PG279Q.....
+Altimate Mohamed the only difference is the price and some shitty speakers. I'm currently waiting on the RMA right now. And yes the bleed was terrible. Any content with black themed colours, viewed at night was simply disgusting....
i bought the monitor its great but the one i got has ips glow you can tell whith a black screen. Yes the model suffers from quality control isshues i might return it
Man I need a new monitor like this, this would really be a awesome upgrade from my Samsung 1920x1080 that I have had for about 6 years now, just need to save up some money to buy 2 of these to run as a dual setup, then again 3 of them would be really awesome running side by side.. Very nice review Linus keep up the good job on reviews..
Smoking Crop Linus thanks you for the 7 USD he made from you signing up to Vessel, a service that sucks. With that cash they could buy more wigs and clown outfits to make the channel that was once great even more stupid.
Smoking Crop LMG and all the others in the promo got 7 USD for each new member, its been in the news for weeks.Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and the one that just bought Twitch put 77 million into Vessel, I find it intersting that people seem to get the tech news only from UA-cam, I would suggest Forbes or WSJ for WTF is going on in the financial world, for tech news, PC Per, LTT is a clown act lately, but i guess there is a place for everything.BTW, i got the free Vessel account, it sucks even though its free, Bezos may fail on this one like the Fire Phone, not to worry, he has plenty cash, he should have teamed up with Gaben and made Half Life 3 instead of the 77 million he put into the abomanation known as Vessel.
Had mine a couple of weeks now, I was a bit nervous spending so much on a monitor, especially given some of the quality issues surrounding this model. But there's no dead pixels and just a very faint bit of ips glow in the bottom right, which I had to look pretty hard to spot. G-Sync is awesome with 144hz is awesome, and paired with my 980ti it really shines. Image quality from the panel itself is superb. Only thing that taints is, is the glossy black, but it's still a smart looking piece of kit. If anyone is thinking about it, it's money well spent.
Great overview and analysis on this monitor. The IPS is exactly what I was looking for. I just wanted to point out to you, that while you're doing your discussion, at least have some better visuals on the display man! Those graphics are terrible looking for whatever game that is on there for the first 5-7 minutes..and you can definitely find better visuals than Tomb raider! Anyway, besides that, well done Linus
Love the videos Linus, just a small correction on this one. AdaptiveSync is the extension within the open standard. FreeSync is AMD's closed/proprietary implementation of that optional functionality of the DP 1.2a. Saying FreeSync is an open standard isn't factually correct. It also may lead to confusion depending on what might be on the side of a box.
I just bought an XB271HU with the addition of the HDMI input which is handy for the odd playstation run. It's a crazy monitor, everything looks great and I'm 100% sold on g sync, playing Dirt Rally at a hundred frames plus is awesome
I've owned the ROG Swift for about 3 months, it failed on me after month 2 showing fuzzy text on the left portion of the panel (very common issue). While the ROG is out for repair I decided to pick up the Acer XB280HK for a 4k experience; while I love the 4k real-estate the panel itself is sub-par exhibiting lots of backlight bleed. Boo hoo. Anyways, the XB270HU has certianly grabbed my attention and I plan to place one side by side with the ROG with which it will hopefully replace. Thanks for the great review Linus, you and your team are the easy one-stop-shop for reviews that matter.
These monitors are currently on sale! I just saw an ad on amazon. I think it's like if you buy 5 (basically split the price with friends unless you're hardcore) its roughly 500$ with free shipping! WOOT!
First comment using a XB271HU!!! This monitor is so choice... Thanks Linus, I made my decision based on your review (+some PG279Q comparisons since there is nothing to chose between the two monitors, I like the muted style of the Predator more)
There's a Freesync version of this monitor coming out as well, but it's a TN panel. The best hope for AMD users seem to be the upcoming Asus MG279Q which recently got certified for 144 hz and Freesync and uses the same AU Optronics AHVA panel.
I just sold my ASUS ROG Switft for 700, I have this one on order! Always wanted IPS G-Sync so I'm just paying the difference. FYI: ROG Swift sells fast, I had 3 guys contact me right away for it at 700, guy paid me cash for it. XB270HU should be in tomorrow I'll let you guys know how IPS/G-Sync is. Thanks Linus for the review!
Just picked that thing up yesterday for 400€. So there wasn't a second to think about if it's worth although I already got a 4k display. 144hz is just really nice.
Allright this video just convinced me to buy the Acer. I was torn between the Dell TN panel with almost same specs and this one who just dropped in price and they made the frame matt and added a mecha-ish stand. IM SOLD!!
This is the monitor the Asus ROG Swift should have been. Fantastic job Acer, whom I personally havn't seen in the monitor business for long, and is now blowing everyone out of the water with awesome monitor after monitor release!
The thought of a ultrawide version of this monitor would be amazing. Imagine 34",144hz, 3440x2560, 21:9, IPS, ultra low motion blur, Gsync or Freesync with a semi matte finish. I would buy that in an instant.
Extremely helpful review, thank you! I am going to pick one of these up as I was in two minds about the Asus ROG Swift (pg278q) or the Acer Predator 4k (XB20H). I think this Acer (XB270HU) will be better than either of those and I hope to enjoy gaming on it for many years :D
I recently bought the ROG SWIFT. Have it for a few months. Can't replace it obviously. Should I feel bad about these news? Am I really left behind or are there any advantages to the SWIFT? What are the pros and cons between the Swift and the Predator? As far as I can see it, the SWIFT Looks better, designed visually and mechanically better for gaming, has 1 ms response time, and also confirmed Flicker Free. Pros are the TN panel, although I have to say I have a big long room, and it's rarely an issue, wide angels for TN and good image.
Linus' one complaint didn't even turn out to be an issue since what he's talking about costs $2000+ currently. I bought the 271 versions and I am ready to love it.
When is this baby coming out?! I can only play on IPS because i hate the non colors on the TN panels , but always wanted more Hz rate... this is the dream. already sitting on 1440p ips from asus
I like glossy screens and am seriously considering buying this monitor. If it were a 32" 4K I would buy it in a heartbeat.. I have a pair of 980's so I can actually drive 4k very well.
I actually bought the XB270HU as b-stock / exhibition piece for 30% off (477 EUR). Since i was used to my old TN monitor, the image quality on this one just blew me away. The white is super neutral, the black is very black and the colors look very differentiated and natural. (By the way, to get the blacks to be really black in videos, you have to adjust the player settings or let the nvidia control panel handle the video settings and set it to full dynamic range.) There is no obvious backlight bleed on mine, but there is some "IPS glow" in the corners when i get close while looking at a dark image. I usually don't notice. (It only happens if you watch an IPS panel at a flat angle, which is the case when you get very close to the monitor and look at the corners -- and i do like to get very close.) As i ran a programm testing for dead pixels, i found at least one plus some specs of dust. I would't have noticed if i had not looked very thoroughly. I am very happy with this one.
I was at Microcenter yesterday and this panel also caught my eye. Looked better then all of the VA and TN panels. And was on par with the 4K IPS panel in the $2000 Acer Predator. I am thinking about getting this ACER. Microcenter had it for $350. Did you end up buying one?
i have a cheaper monitor next to it and it has an IPS panel,it does look a bit better but not THAT much,it did take a couple of hours calibrating the colors on my TN panel for it to be to my liking and during gaming i cant really tell the difference
This sounds like a absolute beast!!! If only there was a 24"! I am looking for a IPS panel with a good amount of response time. I have tried out the Benq xl2411z and the colour even after calibration is not that good at all. What IPS panels would you recommend for me? Thanks

@@gameguy301 that's not what I meant. I personally don't care about more pixels or Hz's, I just want more competition for the +144Hz 1440p IPS market
Is this monitor still a good option?
Try living in nz. This moniter got 300 dolars more expensive
That cheesy phone call from Acer is why I stay subscribed to this channel
Looks like a purchase to me. Shame the UK get burned with price conversion rates...
Just looked, £700 is ridiculous for this monitor.

Yeah you can get the Asus ROG Swift now for under £500 at Overclocker UK.

Rewatching on this exact monitor 5 years later. Still loving it, still great.
Ayyy same here. Was looking to see if I needed to upgrade but I think I'm still good for a while
I bought one today 🤤
im about to buy one myself lol

I just want to say that I really appreciate the video, audio, and general high production values of Linus and his crew.
You guys really do a good job, and I just wanted to say thanks.
Good review, perhaps still missing stuff such as viewing angles, ips glow, backlight bleeding, power consumption, and actually testing the response time and colour accuracy with and without od
but I guess most of your viewers don't miss that at all
144hz ips panel? Is this an april fools joke? Am I missing something? I thought IPS physically couldn't do that speed on a chemistry leve? Gotta be an april fools
This video was on vessel 1 week ago and no it is not an april fools joke.
Thomas H Then what am I missing? Seems kinda sudden for IPS to jump from 60-75hz to 144. I still smell a rat. Like I said, I didn't think ips could physically do that?
SoulDragonWithFlow It's not IPS afaik, instead it's an AHVA panel, though you'd struggle to tell the difference.
If this is april fools, it is a bad one.
who else checked their phone? -__-
Me :D
Nah, the vibration sound sounded too fake.
get fukin #SHREKT
I was watching on my phone lol
Pompa Stompa (Red Actual) I didn't.
7 years later and this is still the status quo at the price range. was the best value purchase you guys ever pointed me towards.
YonOtto I agree, but most of the time while gaming, you won't be paying attention to how the monitor looks and paying attention to the screen.
Daniel Miles I have friends around alot so my computer room has to look amazing ;D
Is that a blue beard? And can I snuggle in it?
Mr. Fuzzums Yes and yes.
***** Cry to momma.
this is too good.... april fools?
It was uploaded on Vessel a week ago
Nope, the Fractal design one is, let's just say, bad timing for uploading this.
no this is real lol
OMFG IT HAS FUCKING EVERYTHING
....INCLUDING A GLOSSY BEZEL.
+andiroidYT YESSSSS
Is there anything better?
omg yaaas
Really in-depth review. This review went up a month and a half ago!
1080p Stoneage? Still like 95% are still using 1080p.
Wondering when 4k will be a norm like 1080p today...
It doesn't matter. Once you've experienced 1440p/1600p you can't go back, while 4K just isn't practical for most gamers.
I've had a 30" 1600p display for several years now and I love it.
I think it will be at least 10-15 years before 4k is the norm. The tech community however will most likely have it within 6 years IMO :-)
***** 10-15? omg what are you talking about? it is already pretty possible to play in 4k, just need money for two 980ti...
mestido I mean like 1080p is the norm now :) that will take at least 10 years from now.
Why you need 144 Hz if human eye can see only 12.
Yes, cos that was irony if your intelligence didn't noticed.
Apocalypto Širola That's not ironic..
Ohh boy ... Yep, intelligence...
Apocalypto Širola No offence but that was ironic, as you earlier used the incorrect words and now you're calling me dumb. But hey, we got there in the end! :D
No, man, I don't call anyone dumb. Just wanna say that human eye ,for that monitor (money),will just look at 12 o'clock .
Too bad it's $800.. for a single monitor. I can't really justify spending that when I can get a surround IPS setup for $200 cheaper.
FINALLY LINUS I was waiting so long for this review!
Just got mine... This monitor is just incredible!
please can you review the XF270HU freesync version.
Is this worth getting over the ROG PG278Q Swift?
brody lockwood yes
Im the same but the rog swift seems to have lots of problems
+brody lockwood I would not go with the Asus ROG.
Lodewijk Engel Lol too late i bought it 3 days ago online. Hasn't got here yet but oh well.
+brody lockwood any problems with them
I'm a play station fan boy... sadly like many i never realized the power of a pc vs console!!
+TrueEvil09 nice! Did you already finished it?
Soon I need 3000$ ^_^
+TrueEvil09 building a new computer
+TrueEvil09 ?
TrueEvil09 Jesus what computer did you end up building with 3000? NASA called they want their computer back.
I still have it and it is great.
XF270HUA I just purchased with Freesync and the 0 bezzel and it's amazing.only dislike the OSD and buttons. very well built
Do an RMA? The monitor has a warranty lmao
+Paul Aldrich why did you buy this when they have already released the XB271HU?
Yes the model suffers from quality control isshues i might return it
+ultrapyro magnetic I bought it aswell.. Same problem. Considering the price this is just bullshit..
DID YOU USE THE DRIVERS TO CALIBRATE IT
ultrapyro magnetic No, i calibrated it manually. It just masks the bleed a bit and you lose a lot of brightness. Not a worthy trade in my opinon..
im debating if i should return it
do you get flickering problems?
Jesus!i want IPS but i just love the ROG Swift!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!! OMG 1ST WORLD PROBLEMS!!!! WHAT DO I GET?!?!?!!?
Why do you like the rog swift???
I like your older intro music better. Bring it back!
Ordered it today! :D
Thanks for another great video, Linus.
If only it had glossy display :(
if u call 1080p "stone age", that means im at the "lower Paleolithic"
Guys is there a monitor like this but 24"?
did you find it 24"
no
1440p tends to have a better pixel density / distribution at 27" than at 24", so I'd go for 27" if image quality is your priority
Acer has been impressing me lately. Awesome!
lol i love it!
HaHa April fools right?!?
Smoking Crop Linus thanks you for the 7 USD he made from you signing up to Vessel, a service that sucks.
With that cash they could buy more wigs and clown outfits to make the channel that was once great even more stupid.
Smoking Crop
LMG and all the others in the promo got 7 USD for each new member, its been in the news for weeks.Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and the one that just bought Twitch put 77 million into Vessel, I find it intersting that people seem to get the tech news only from UA-cam, I would suggest Forbes or WSJ for WTF is going on in the financial world, for tech news, PC Per, LTT is a clown act lately, but i guess there is a place for everything.BTW, i got the free Vessel account, it sucks even though its free, Bezos may fail on this one like the Fire Phone, not to worry, he has plenty cash, he should have teamed up with Gaben and made Half Life 3 instead of the 77 million he put into the abomanation known as Vessel.
Great video. Honest and detailed. Good stuff man. Cheers
I am STILL using this and coming back to this video to see what there to look for in a feasible upgrade at the same size and resolution
If anyone is thinking about it, it's money well spent.
cant wait, getting one tomorrow
XR341CK 34″ 144Hz Curved G-SYNC ultrawide is what you want linus, me too, me too. Buying that bad boy asap.
I almost ordered this Monitor. Than i saw the Acer XR341CK is around the corner. And Hell what a Beast that is, i wait now ^^
Great overview and analysis on this monitor.
The beginning music is so cuddly.
The Acer Predator XB270HU by Acer!
well done linus.
Buying this soon keeping it for 3-5 years
Update on my comment still love this monitor have no regrets buying it!
JD Gaming oh nice
These monitors are currently on sale! I just saw an ad on amazon. I think it's like if you buy 5 (basically split the price with friends unless you're hardcore) its roughly 500$ with free shipping! WOOT!
First comment using a XB271HU!!! This monitor is so choice... Thanks Linus, I made my decision based on your review (+some PG279Q comparisons since there is nothing to chose between the two monitors, I like the muted style of the Predator more)
Got mine today....waves better than the ROG Swift.
No complaints literally the panel I have been waiting for.
When I heard "compromising refresh rate and response time" I immediately closed the video, glad I came back to it lol
There's a Freesync version of this monitor coming out as well, but it's a TN panel.
The best hope for AMD users seem to be the upcoming Asus MG279Q which recently got certified for 144 hz and Freesync and uses the same AU Optronics AHVA panel.
Peak Linus monitor reviews
Bought one first day from Acer -- IT'S GLORIOUS
Loving the new(ish) video intro :)
An updated XB271HU review so we can compare to this old one? I recently got one. Love it.
waiting for this for a while
I actually bought the XB270HU as b-stock / exhibition piece for 30% off (477 EUR). Since i was used to my old TN monitor, the image quality on this one just blew me away. The white is super neutral, the black is very black and the colors look very differentiated and natural.
(By the way, to get the blacks to be really black in videos, you have to adjust the player settings or let the nvidia control panel handle the video settings and set it to full dynamic range.)
There is no obvious backlight bleed on mine, but there is some "IPS glow" in the corners when i get close while looking at a dark image. I usually don't notice. (It only happens if you watch an IPS panel at a flat angle, which is the case when you get very close to the monitor and look at the corners -- and i do like to get very close.)
As i ran a programm testing for dead pixels, i found at least one plus some specs of dust. I would't have noticed if i had not looked very thoroughly.
I am very happy with this one.
gotta love sales :D
have freesync version of this monitor loving it.
Using it right now, it is pretty incredible although if they could get G-sync working with ULMB that'd be amazing.
Went to Microcenter to look at this monitor today, it's incredible. Gonna be a long 4 day wait to get mine!
I was at Microcenter yesterday and this panel also caught my eye. Looked better then all of the VA and TN panels. And was on par with the 4K IPS panel in the $2000 Acer Predator. I am thinking about getting this ACER. Microcenter had it for $350. Did you end up buying one?
i bought Acer Predator XB241h and i love it
i have a cheaper monitor next to it and it has an IPS panel,it does look a bit better but not THAT much,it did take a couple of hours calibrating the colors on my TN panel for it to be to my liking and during gaming i cant really tell the difference
Just got the new, slightly upgraded version (XB271HU) with super thin bezels and it's overclockable to 165hz. It's a pretty damn amazing display.
This sounds like a absolute beast!!! If only there was a 24"! I am looking for a IPS panel with a good amount of response time. I have tried out the Benq xl2411z and the colour even after calibration is not that good at all. What IPS panels would you recommend for me? Thanks
linus plus sandstorm, magic!
already seen on Vessel a Week ago, and this is my new monitor
I thought you would like that Black and Orange combo Linus
