My 9yo son and I loved your Tannenbaum classification system. He is now deciding which categories all his favorite movies belong in. My husband and I have a non-traditional Christmas Eve movie tradition. He is not a fan of the holidays at all and by Christmas Eve, he’s just ready for it all to be over. So to revive his wilting spirits, we watch the most non-Christmas movie there is: Jaws. And we eat seafood gumbo. We’re going on 15 years of this tradition and it’s now one of my favorites! Merry Christmas, Christopher and family!

I loved everything about this episode Christopher! Just wonderful! As a French Canadian growing up near Montreal, every year for the past 40 years there has been something called Ciné-Cadeau (Cinema gift): during every day of the 2 weeks long school break, one family movie is shown on public tv. Some of those movies have been shown every single year and have become Christmas favorites even if they don’t have anything to do with the season! Asterix et Cléopatre, an animated movie from an iconic and well loved comics series, has become a true classic and everyone I know from 5-75 years old waits each year to watch it during the holidays! It probably belongs near the top of the tree. Also, La Guerre des Tuques ( War of the hats)- though the English title is The Dog Who Stopped the War though it was originally made in French in 1984)is a classic Christmas movie for us. It probably belongs near the bottom of the tree 🌲. The made an animated version in 2015 which I think is called Snowtime in English. But it will never equal the original version in my heart: kids on holiday, snow forts, snowball fights…. It’s my 70s childhood! 😊Thanks for featuring so many incredible dyers and businesses! I am going to check them out and give some love to some of them when I can. What incredible people there are in this community! Happy holidays to you and everyone at your table! 🥰🎄

Love this way of categorizing holiday media!! The first time I watched Jingle Jangle I was so upset that it wasn’t more Christmasy. Then I went to describe the plot to someone - a child helps an elderly inventor rediscover the magic he used to find in building toys - and I saw how it was actually very Christmasy. Still belongs in the star category but it has its layers!

Christopher - scotcheroos ?! I've never heard of these. Once again, here you are serving us up another recipe to bring to the potluck! 🤣
I saved this episode right for when I would need it and I'm glad I did. It's so nice to knit with someone far away and listen to them chatting away. The Holiday movie chart HAD me rolling! Thank you for that.
So many lovely yarn companies here doing amazing things (not just yarn!) Thanks for sharing them with us.

  • @knitty781

Howl is living her best life. She reminds me of all the barn cats we've had - coming to the house and leaving when they want.
I can see a post Christmas shopping spree coming on. You'll have to show us what you collect and create. I've been working on an Anthropology felt holiday garland for two years now. It takes a while because it's literally hundreds of 1" x 6" pieces of felt tied in the middle and strung on cotton thread. I make a lot of my own ornaments. I'd love to have a whole knitted tree.
Christmas cookies... yum.... I've had a few but haven't baked a single cookie. My grandsons and I have had fun, though. We painted my french doors with snowmen and Christmas tree, made lots of crafts, wrapped packages, put together a building brick Christmas tree (not Legos, but like Legos) and started painting a ceramic Christmas tree. (Five Below for $5! I was surprised any were left!)
I could easily watch several hours of you discussing Holiday Movies. And most of my faves are in category three - I love Meet Me in St. Louis, but as much as I love the Christmas scenes, my fave is the Halloween scenes. I watched one on Netflix called The Noel Diary that had nothing to do with Christmas about a woman seeking her bio mom. Holidate is another good one on Netflix. Just a couple who decide to go to each other's events as a 'date' so people would stop asking about SOs. And yes, White Christmas is also an amazing movie not about Christmas.
Another movie that really has Christmas as complete set dressing is 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Many people have a crisis throughout the year. And most of the movie takes place at other times of the year.
What a wonderful review of yarns and only two that I am familiar with!

“Sleepless in Seattle “ is one of my go-to Christmastime movies. “Christmas in Connecticut “ is also fun. The DVD it’s on includes a short movie called “Star in the Night” that’s well-done. It would definitely be all about Christmas. The prior two are probably higher on the Graduated Tannenbaum scale. Oh, and “The Blue Carbuncle” is a Sherlock Holmes episode with Jeremy Brett that is set at Christmas!
    Fun episode! Thank you! ❤

My 13 y.o. and I were discussing your Tannenbaum classification and enjoying ourselves. I would say most of what I (we) watch over December are movies that are all layers except hardly the bottom one: maybe set at Christmas (or not), they were shown on TV or at the theaters at Christmastime when I was young (and streaming today), and have become tradition (It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, The Holiday, Home Alone, and so on)--all completely possible without it being Christmas. The 1966 animated "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is really the main movie that falls at that bottom layer (that I can think of) that I watch consistently. Thanks for saving a seat for me at the table! Merry Christmas!

Hi, Christopher! I loved this episode--start to finish! Your voice is like hot, buttered rum and the content is ah-mazing. Re: Christmas movies. So, I learned that an old classic (I'd not watched, but did this year) is a "Christmas movie" and I would place it at (starting from the bottom) Level 2: "The Apartment". Glad I watched it, but I don't see how it could get made in this day and age--SO much inappropriateness! One my husband and I found on Netflix and really liked is "The Feast of the Seven Fishes"--which would straddle the line between Level 1 and Level 2. I can now say everything I know about Italians is from this movie and "Moonstruck". Love, love, love. This year we did not watch some of our usuals, but in 2024 we hope to watch some classics that we just somehow never have seen. Cheers and Happy New Year!

There is nothing in it related to Christmas, there is nothing in the movie related to Christmas; yet, we hear it in so many Christmas playlists! The joy you give me every time you put out a new episode is amazing, it's like sitting down with a friend I've not seen in a hot minute and chatting til our face hurts. I love love this idea of 12 yarns of Christmas (I might, upon the soft launch of my own UA-cam, ask to borrow this) and I love you way of categorised Christmas movies. Our traditional, has nothing to do with Christmas movie is any of the Wallace and Gromit movies, but especially The Wrong Trousers. 😂 Amazing. Also you've encouraged me to branch out a little with my yarn choices and I'm going to see if anyone has some BFL or non superwash I can squish and give a try.

Wonderful episode. I am a baby boomer, not sure what else to call myself. Lol anyway I grew up in the sixties and the Wizard of Oz was only on tv once a year. And it was at Thanksgiving. Now it comes on all year long. To this day when I think of Thanksgiving, I think of Oz. Oh and to this day I still cry in the end when Dorothy says goodbye to the Scarecrow. As for Christmas, I guess my must see isn’t a movie but the cartoon show of Rudolph. I have been watching that since I can remember.

I love Christmas, last couple Christmas I was not in a good place as my brother pasted two years ago before Christmas so depression has been a close friend. This year though I’m getting back to being me (of course never will be the same) but I made cookies, rice Krispy treats, and yesterday I made cornbread dressing which is very much a tradition. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas 🎄

In Norway we show a Czech movie called "three nuts for cinderella" on christmas eve (no exceptions for about 50years or so now) It has nothing to do with christmas, but it is in winter 😋 a classic take on the cinderella fairytail really. Best part. It's half dubbed by a single norwegian man, with the origional sound in the back still 🤣 they even asked if people wanted it origional but with text and ppl said no 🤣 It is my favorit christmas movie, and I only watch it at 11 am christmas eve when shown on tv 😋

Wow, I didn't know that Mustang driver that wakes me up every morning drove by your house (probably not true, but gee whiz do they sound the same) Those are some lovely yarns, which is sort of a problem because so many beautiful yarns, not nearly enough projects planned, but I'm hoping they are all doing really well so that by the time I can get through all the wonderful yarns, they'll still be around to provide fibers for. Have a peaceful and rewarding winter season.

That is SO. TRUE. The costumes are insanely good. I just....... oy. I wish the script was better? And the direction? I dunno... it's one of those movies that has brilliance hiding inside it. They just weren't able to get it over the finish line. Half of me wonders if it was originally much longer and the damage comes from editing for the sake of being a children's movie.

Merry Christmas and Happy Winter to you! Thank you so much for putting such a fun episode out into the world. Your Christmas movie classification system is fantastic! My oddball Christmas movies, which probably belong at the star tier but you tell me, are While You Were Sleeping, Bridget Jones Diary, and Hook. While You Were Sleeping and that beautiful wintery Chicago, yes please! Bridget Jones with Colin Firth in the Christmas sweaters, be still my heart!

One of my friends is convinced that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a Christmas movie! Specifically the first one, none of the others.
I can kinda see it, since growing up ABC would have those Harry Potter Movie marathons during the holiday breaks. I personally don’t see it specifically as a Christmas movie, but she and her family does and it’s their tradition to watch it every year!

Speaking of films (more like films for TV) of the third category, in the late 90's one the french broadcast used to air Lamberto Bava's The Cave of the Golden Rose, an Italian fantasy romance adventure. It's incredible (and camp). And I believe they still rerun the Asterix animation films.
