I cannot express ho important your videos have become for me. I am a stay at home mom, kids in school, hubs at work. I am alone for at least 85% of my day. I have zero crafting friends, so when i found your videos my heart melted. I appreciate you making space.
On a lighter note, those squares are beautiful

What an extraordinarily kind thing to read this morning! You've truly touched me and I'm so glad that my channel gives you somewhere to rest, find friendship, and spend time. 😊😊😊 You're always welcome here. And thank you!! I did my best and I'm excited to see what other quilt-fun things I can accomplish with the scrappy pieces I have left!

@skeeterwhitley9191, have you found a local yarn shop or guild to join? Our local ones here in Raleigh, NC have social knitting/crochet all the time, especially in the middle of the day. Find your people and share your joy! But know, we are your people too and we’ll always be joining you here at the table.

@@summerk.1275 I'm sure you've heard of southern hospitality... That doesn't exist in Tx anymore. It seems like most local crafters here are in competition with each other. I have tried to make friends, i promise im not just playing cry baby. People here are really mean

Does anyone else respond to videos like you are sitting in the room having a chat? Or is it just me? Also, I love when people discover the joy in a new creative hobby. My advice is you don’t know what you don’t know, so don’t let it keep you from trying new things.

Your videos are always such a bright spot in my week. February is a strange time in the Midwest and I know this year I've been dealing with a lot of existential dread about climate change as our weather has been so much warmer and more volatile than usual. But I am enjoying the warmer weather to go on hikes with my husband and your footage of the park looks so much like the areas we've been walking!
I'm also a sewer as well as a knitter and I'm very impressed with your patchwork squares. Much better than the first ones I did! The skills of piecework will certainly help you in cutting and sewing garments, although the skills needed for fitting and tailoring are VERY different and almost unrelated to the skills of actually sewing seams. (I'm still learning.) But it's deeply satisfying to wear an entire outfit that I've created myself!

I've been beset by the “Februaries” my entire life. I have to get outside every day, rain or shine, even if it's only for 5 minutes. And continuously remind myself that I will survive the latest February, like I survived all the other one. Having big clear outs also helps.

Christopher, what a lovely video! I've lived in San Francisco for over a decade now and I so know what you mean about a quiet walk. My family's in a small town in Oregon and whenever I visit, I walk every day there. As a spinner myself I'm looking forward to seeing your spinning adventures. Hand spun yarn is really a joy to knit with.

as a southern hemispherian, living in Australia, I find February to be the worst month. I am not a fan of the heat of summer, and the late summer blooms irritate my hayfever as much as the spring blooms and the ragweed do. but honestly, the sunlight lasting as long as it does is quite wonderful.

I was laughing out loud when you were telling the story of Howl the cat. We have a grey and white cat who recently adopted us. We call her "Grey Kitty ". It also started when the winter was approaching and we felt so bad when she would just sit on the porch in the cold that we also got her a Cat house with a heating pad. That's how it begins. She now has a heated cat condo on the deck but has made friends with our 3 large dogs, so she is inside and outside. So Grey Kitty has come to stay!😂

It was so inspiring yet again to have a seat at your table, Christopher. And although I'm overseas in Germany obviously the same drive to explore new creative venues has gotten a hold of both of us during the first two months of this new year. I also picked up sewing and just finished a wonderful brown linen dress, just the same color as your favorite skein of yarn from the walnut bath. I also began making leather wrap bracelets with gemstone beads. Another project is weaving a basket using paper rolls. And have planned to make my first hand-dyed yarn this spring. Spinning always seemed somewhat out of reach, too complicated and complex, but now you sparked my interest and I'm eager to know more about what you're doing with this machine...may you have tons of new creative ideas and joyful moments in nature until we meet again at the table.

Myself, I'm trying my best to do that as consistently as possible - spinning and sewing being chief among them right now. I'm excited to take you on my lil spinning journey as I figure out what it means to be a truly good spinner!

Wow Christopher. Nice job on the quilting (piecing or piecework or peacework). I have quilted, sewn, crocheted and now am learning to knit. Currently I am making a crochet cardigan, a baby blanket, an afghan, a scarf, a beginner knitted scarf and a shawl. Also I am in the process of making 3 Japanese aprons from old lighter weight upholstery fabric (washable of course). You did a beautiful job on the quilting. I very much enjoy your videos, how you entertain and educate. Thank you.

I am new at quilting as well and I’m excited to follow this journey with you! I think the creative aspect of quilting go hand in hand with knitting! I started knitting 4 years ago and love the portability of it. Keep it up.

Hello Christopher! I really appreciated you having us all over for a lovely hang! 🥰 I have also collected Black Walnuts, and the first time I boiled them down, I ended up putting many jars of the liquid in the freezer because...I didn't have time. So I had a moment of recognition with the process. I did end up doing it again the next fall, (this after removing broken glass bottles from my freezer months later and tossing the lot, haha), and dyed some raw but scoured fleece. It's a lovely dark brown but I haven't gotten around to spinning it yet. Regarding tossing the mold outside, I'm sure that will be fine but you probably know that Black Walnut can have an adverse effect on plants growing near it? This is a snippet from the internet: "Walnut trees produce a compound called juglone, which can be toxic to some surrounding plants. Knowing which plants are sensitive to or tolerant of juglone will help you plan a garden that will thrive around your walnut tree."
At any rate, that small amount of beautiful mold will likely do no harm at all. Have a wonderful rest of your February, and enjoy many walks in that gorgeous park! -Karen in Maine

I cannot imagine living in a city for years. We lived in a suburb for 9 months, but that was about all we could stand. We got out to the farm quickly. We are country people from the word go. I downloaded the app, though, because you never know what you might find that's new. We have a trail in our hay field. It goes from our house north to the barn, west to the FCC Church, south to the Emmanuel School, and back east to my house. I believe it's a three mile walk.
I'm glad you found a nice place to walk. Foxes are wonderful. I'm surprised you didn't see or hear some owls. My son is a nature photographer and he has been talking pictures of barred and short eared owls. Today he said he saw a snowy owl. I hope he got some photos.
Yes, I try new crafts all the time. This year, it's about watercolors. I'm very new at it and it's really rough, but I want a more abstract look in my watercolors. Next year, I'm hoping to do basketmaking. I want to plant some appropriate grasses in my front yard this spring.
What a gloriously fun experiment! That is amazing and the colors you achieved are so rich and beautiful. They will make a gorgeous project!

    • @FlannelandPurls
      @FlannelandPurls  11 місяців тому

There's so much more to know, it seems. Not to belittle knitting in any capacity but the list of skills and techniques, the tools, the variety of products.... it seems so much more vast than knitting. With knits, it's really just a collection of a few different movements, isn't it. Knits, purls, yarn overs, crosses - and small variations of those four core actions.
Sure, there are tons of things to know about type of wool, tension, gauge, needle selection, etc.... but you don't need a machine! Or know about grainline, all the fabric washing, the ironing, the pressing, the exact seams... it just feels a lot more daunting than the comparably straightforward nature of knitting!

I can use my yarn for most of those so at least I'm not adding too much....right? I love your piecing and can't wait to try that again, too. I started learning to sew about two years ago and then I started learning to knit and spin about one year ago. Both bring me such joy, though knitting and spinning have a more meditative quality for me while sewing can involve more swearing. But I love all the garments I’ve made. Oh, thank you! You know.... it might. It might. I need to take a look. See, the problem I have is that I'm filled with the unearned, delusional confidence of "How Hard Could It Be?" The answer always being much harder than I thought it would. Meanwhile, I have UA-cam to teaching me right from wrong but the issue is that I don't actually look things up BEFORE they become problems. This is my issue loooooooolllllllll

I didn't get a chance to finish your podcast last night, and am finishing it tonight. I am a sewer. Learned to sew about the same time I learned to knit, in grade school. I was in 4H sewing for 10 years, as were my sisters. It is similar to making quilt tops, but quilt tops are less forgiving, as you have found out. Not a spinner, though. I want to spend my time learning about knitting and how it works with various weights, different types of fibers, etc. Your enthusiasm for all you are trying is infectious, though. Nothing is better than finding your tribe and allowing yourself to enjoy the passion.
I told a friend about your story, but I wasn't as good at telling it as you. But the person I told loved the story.

  • @eyeamdust

It's interesting to hear you beginning a lot of new crafting within the fiber arts. I know it's an exciting time in your life because i've been there and done that. I was a weaver, a spinner, and I did crewel work, knitting, cross stitch, felting, crochet, and macrame. I was a sewist, so to speak, sewing clothes for my children and myself. I even made my own wedding dress and a shirt for my husband for our wedding. I learned to bind handmade books. I've even made quilts. I've made my own candles, and i'm a damn good cook. I've, for decades, raised my own organic produce. I can't think of what else there is. But I'm sure there were some other things that I did that are not coming to me off hand. Oh yeah. I have raised goats and chickens. All that to say that I don't do any of that anymore except that I continue to knit.
Now that I am an obsessive and exclusive knitter due to physical reasons and "downsizing," I certainly appreciate your curiosity and interest in many things. "You go, girl." Do it all. Do everything you want to do. I don't regret anything I've done, nor do I regret everything that i've had to give up. Just have fun. From what I can see. That's exactly what you're doing. I love your podcast.

You did an excellent job on your quilt squares. Your points were spot on! I have been quilting for over 25 years and I am proud of you. I craft in just about every genre of the art world. I own an Ashford Traveler spinning wheel and for a few years I struggled to get it to work, only to find that my husband, God rest his soul, had built the thing backwards. It has sat now in a crate in pieces haunting me to rebuild it. I have been procrastinating but maybe I can get inspired again to put the darn thing together. Lately I have been doing my counted cross stitch which I have loved for years. I did not see your Patreon link but I will look for it.

Thank you for sharing your dye story! The colors are beautiful! I have been wanting to try some natural dyes as well, but have yet to work up the courage. From my research I have learned that "Paint strainer bags" are the thing to put your natural dye material in. It makes it much easier to remove all the bits after you've boiled them. There still may be sediment that makes it through, but this seems like it should help! Look forward to seeing more natural dye results in the future! Hope Howl is doing well!

You should try sailing sometime…being alone out on the water (we sail Lake Michigan) with no one else around as far as you can see, no land as far as you can see, just you, the water and the people on your boat. There are several programs (which I'm sure you have at least a couple of) that can sharpen a slightly unfocused video without creating artifacts or faults, should you find yourself in that situation again, ever.
Your sweater came out great. I finished my sleeves as well, and started the third ugly xmas sweater (going on 3 months behind, now, or perhaps 9 months ahead?)
It would have taken me longer to realize the dye was spent.
Great job on the quilt blocks!
If you are still having problems with your sleeves, check the historical costuming creators. They do a great job on explaining why things are marked on patterns the way they are and how things became standardized somewhat, along with tips on how to ease seams in correctly.
