  • In this new Simple Thoughts, I wanted to voice some frustrations I've been having with streaming services . With stuff like the Ghost and Molly Mcgee ending and Rap Sh!t getting cancelled, there's been a slew of cancellations or shows ending early happening to so many series now and I've seen many say how they're tired of keeping up. To some it feels like watching TV is done out of obligation rather than enjoyment. Streaming has made it clear it’s true competition was never other services but actually UA-cam which is not good. This was me putting a voice to the grievances people have been having. #youtube #streamingservices

The cancellation and uncertainty in tv shows really became apparent to me with The Owl House. Despite my thinking that their 3-episode ending was the best it could be, it gutted me to think of what we could’ve gotten with more time.
I’m just kind of checked out of the new stuff. I don’t feel certain any of it will last beyond a season, so there’s no motivation for me to try to get invested. I’d rather go watch the 2017 Ducktales reboot.

All of these cancellation have been infuriating to watch. Shows have been cut to short in the past before (I'm still upset about Wander over Yonder and Motorcity) but its now worse then ever because of streaming. Along with the high demand of shows needing to be instant hits, the binge model, and the lack of proper promotion, the limited amount of episodes have really hurt some shows. My Adventures with Superman is one that instantly comes to mind since as much as I enjoyed the show, it needed far more then 10 episodes. And given the current state of the industry, I have a sinking feeling that S2 may be the last season of this show. Something really does need to change.

Those companies treat TV shows like movies without seeing the potential in the TV show model, both for the networks and the consumer. When you can only watch an episode a week, you will think about the show for a longer time, you get more invested in the characters and the universe and it's much easier to spend half an hour per week on a show. Instead they want you to finish the show in like a month, better yet, a weekend, right when the show drops, just like how you watch a movie in a theater and watch the entire thing in one sitting.
Sure, a lot of people do binge shows when they come out, but they can't expect everyone to do that. People have jobs, a family, other hobbies or just don't like binging. Companies need to stop looking just at how many people binged the entire show in one month.

As someone who has been trying hard to “catch up” with Pop Culture, I completely understand how your feeling.
As great as it is to have access to so much media (new or not) it does become exhausting for average viewers. We may not have appreciated it back then but tv schedules a long time ago did have the right idea of balancing their premieres and reruns.
It really makes me wish that streaming services had a option where you could group shows into your own “block”. Instead of going to the next episode of your current show it would take you to a ep of another.

This is kinda weird to think about especially when it comes to story driven shows. When it came to cable the network had to rerun the show so people won’t get confused but that will only happened if your show was really popular and gotten the views. And if you didn’t than the show was dump on a sister channel that’ll die by the next season. With streaming it should be more convincing and simple but since there are dumbass CEO in charge that don’t know how to run things. They expect you to get views instantly even if they didn’t market the show. And if you don’t meet their high expectation than boom two season and you’ll get replace by other show. Meanwhile shows that people don’t watch or care for getting lots of amounts of season. As someone who was born in 2008 and is in the generation of cable dying and streaming booming and becoming the norm. It’s kinda sad how these shows especially the animation tv series are being treated by big companies. Luckily indie animation is becoming more and more common so there still is a bright future

Thank you for saying this! It's become a very frustrating design where we are losing shows thanks to it not reaching high performance standards on streaming. The Ghost and Molly McGee had to end the show without a third season thanks to Disney deciding it was popular, but not popular enough. It seems no matter how hard we try it will never be enough and shows will still be cancelled and shortened, thanks to the extraordinary high standards. On Netflix, Lockwood and Co is one of the most thumbed up shows by people who watched it, and was an amazing, well-paced season that could have led to a full show, but it was cancelled after one season (which ended on a huge cliffhanger). It seems streaming services are screwing over the creators of the shows, because they never seem to get to fully realize their visions, the actors, because their jobs are cut short, and the viewers, because we're forced to have to watch the shows within a certain amount of time or lose them. On the subject of watching tv becoming a job, not only are viewers pressured to fulfil a certain number of viewer metrics, but it's also in a lot of cases come down to fans to even advertise the show (because like you said, social media posts are NOT enough) and to spread the hype. Thanks for making this video because this need to be said and something needs to change!

TV is really hard now. I remember it used to be a much more passive experience. You watched what was on to watch. Now it’s a constant choice of what you want to watch and what you should watch. I don’t want to feel like a shows success depends on me prioritizing it immediately. As much as my kids hate it. I feel like the week-to-week model is the best with streaming. You can choose to wait until the end of the season and binge it. You can watch it from the start. You can get on board in the middle. And hopefully 8-12 weeks is long enough to gain a good audience. Disney does usually drop chunks of cartoons at once, especially if they were already on Disney channel. I think Moon Girl was originally dropped in 1 or two chunks. Hopefully that means they aren’t planning on canceling it. I love that show and I’ve been telling everyone to watch it. My daughter loves it. And we bought the soundtrack and that’s one of like 5 albums she owns. I’m not even sure how I’m supposed to know that some of these shows have dropped more episodes too unless they advertise it on the top banner. Ugh, that’s just more work to get up with.

I agree with the majority of what was said in the video, except for the whole "streaming is more expensive than cable" thing. As if cable hasn't raised their prices too. The nice thing about streaming is that if you're a casual TV viewer and you aren't that picky, it's only as expensive as you want it to be. Streaming only gets super expensive if you try to buy the highest tier of every monthly subscription service that exists. Who on earth has time to watch all that content every month? Most people just have about four or fewer of those at any given time and just cancel whatever they aren't currently watching because it's super easy to do that. If you're paying for cable and you never watch some of the channels, guess what, you're still paying for them, and they make it considerably harder to cancel their services. A lot of modern shows are exclusive to streaming, so you'll lose access to them if you switch back to cable. It's not like cable has gotten better over time, either. Have you tried watching TBS lately? They have sped up their shows so they can fit even more ads into their program block, and I wouldn't be shocked if other cable channels start doing that, too. Do you like Tubi because it's more like how Hulu used to be? Guess what? That's just one of the most popular FAST services. (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television) Just one of them offers hundreds of free channels. Even broadcast TV can't beat that deal.

I feel awful about this as person who’s actually working in animated productions there is a lot of work put into these but it feels nasty when stuff is getting cancelled left and right and the work put into what’s been created is dumped into the trash

Between there just being too much Original contwnt bwing put out on theae streaming services and these streaming services costing too much nowadays per month, it's not surprising that people rely on other means of watching all this newer stuff and said newer stuff being cancelled more and more. All that in total is why people are cutting them off because of how much they've become "jobs" and glorified cable channels that build up to being one painful burning hole in the consumer's wallet.

A lot of people are canceling their streaming subscriptions for one reason or another lately so I don’t think it’s gonna matter in the long run.

Tbh... I dont watch tv anymore. I watch a couple of shows. I didnt even know rap shit existed until the 2nd season and ive had a Max Subscription since the service started. We live in silos and since i watch mainly animation and Documentaries the algorithm never shows me certain content.

I use to be a blogger and reviewer on a My Little Pony fansite, I started watching MLP-FiM in 2013, and it was the best thing I had seen in a while, so I joined a fansite to share my love of the characters and the show. After four years, I was completely spent and tapped out, I was no longer interesting in G4 MLP, I had to watch every new episode, then rewatch it to analyse every line and every frame of animation, it was gruelling, I felt I was losing hours of my leisure, watching a show I felt was becoming mediocre, but the site need me to please the Bronies, no matter how much crunch me and other writers were experiencing. This all happened in 2016, season five was the last season I saw in full, and the last season I reviewed, it was such a bitter experience, I can no longer watch MLP-FiM, I recently tried on Netflix, but I quit after a few minutes, the memories of being harassed and stalked just to give my opinion on pony related content, was painful and traumatic experience, watching MLP shouldn't have been a job, yet I got the last laugh, as I witnessed the fansite and the fans ruin the last shred of dignity, I was grateful not to be caught in the middle of that squabble.

We need to put the creator ahead of children.
The rules that are made to "protect" children are all BS that just hurts the creator made by adults who THINK they know what's right Every change the Government makes to protect children harms creators, harms shows . And the point is, kids are not being harmed at all. they can take it. They can deal with it. It is the adults who wrongly assume and make decisions.
Look at where we are now
No Selling toys = less money to the studio, show gets canceled
Show must be educational = No Super Hero or Action shows
Shows can't be too scarry = Nothing is ever at stake
Shows can't be offensive = No representation
Shows must include representation = forced offensive stereotype gets added with nothing to do beyond one episode
Shows must be for children only = If adults watch it , it gets canceled.
We don't want creeps commenting on the comment section and stalking children = No one can comment at all and your video never makes money because it doesn't fit the algorithm
Kids need to be protected from sex and violence = We block reviews and edits and reactions to animated shows while Happy Tree Friends and shows like it go completely undetected
We want to protect kids from sex and nudity and other big scary words = we harm an entire culture mostly with in the LGBT community.
We want to end school shootings and drugs = Cartoon censorship to remove violence and vices
and any thing else you want to toss in the mix, PITA, MAGA ANTIFA, PTA, LGBT, all the abbreviations they all stab away at cartoons, carve them up till nothing is left but a dule harmless PBS series and even THOSE cause controversy. You can't even have your characters be a COLLOR (or a shape) if that color is on some one's flag with out the world thinking you're slipping subliminal messages
that or we all have to stop owning colors and shapes.
Bottum live, children will be happy any place they end up living. You can surround them with any thing and they'll grow up perfectly normal. YOU are the ones who read to much in to it and turn it ugly. YOU, the adult, you judge morality by 1950s America. But there are so many different kids of socially acceptable normals.
Stop freaking out every time a child sees kissing or an advertisement or a gun. These things don't ruin Innocence. Let creators relize there full vision.

Half of that you said a child shouldn’t be seeing and sounds more for Teens not kids, if your ok with children seeing half of this you have a serious problem,
creator vision be damned no child should be seeing sex or nudity period that’s wrong so many levels and grown adults who are neets and haven’t grown up and are being creepy on a cartoon for kids yeah they shouldn’t be commenting let alone be on the space as kids.
