Don't "imagine." Distinctly remember. When I was a kid, my brothers and I always gave albums to each other for Christmas. I got this one for one of my brothers. Played it everyday during Christmas break. Lol
The true "holy shit" moment about this song is seeing it live and realizing that after that scream, Roger still had a voice. Most other singers would have completely shredded their vocal cords.
@@T3rratubby Fleetwood is nowhere near gold status. Surprised you were down on Buckingham as I personally don't care for him. Theie music overall is too sweet for me.
this was the ending from their album quadrophenia, which is just like pink floyd's the wall (wich was heavily inspired by this album) a rock opera with a whole story behind it. if you are interested in an album with a story, and where all songs belong together and meant to listen to in one sitting, you should do an album reaction if you are able to, and listen to the whole album in one sitting. you won't regret it.
Next Who selection should be "The Real Me"! You need the full chaos/angst that came before the beautiful resolution of "Reign O'er Me" to see the full picture! Whole album is fantastic - still have mine from the 70s!
I remember the first time I heard this song when I was in high school in the 70's, I was just left thinking that I had just heard one of the greatest songs in history. I listened to it, by the way I bought the Quadraphenia album as soon as it was available and listened to Love Reign Or' Me by myself, anyways I listened to it over and over on the 12 inch 33 1/3 record of course with my headphones on and cranked up to maximum volume and to this day never in the least getting tired of it. It's right up there in my opinion with Stairway To Heaven and Don't Fear The Reaper as my favorite songs of all time. This Who song isn't a 10 though in my view, it's off the charts, a 20 outa 10 or higher. Pete Townshend I think doesn't get in the music world enough credit for his just plain all around virtuoso song writing, the lyrics, the keyboards, the synthesizer innovation, the stings and of course his underrated guitar work. Brilliant is an understatement and the rest of the band were fantastic also! The Who just all came together in perfect harmony and they have enriched my life so, so much. R.I.P. Keith and John!!!...... .......
Lulls you in with the soft opening, then - 'If my fist clenches crack it open/before I use it and lose my cool' - rest of the song has a snarl to go with the subtle beauty. Yet another Who classic.
The song is daltrey's apology and catharsis. The who almost kicked him out. They were sensitive musicians and roger was a tough kid who was used to setting arguments with a fight.
The Who was basically Daltrey belting out Townsend's compositions, with Pete slashing out his guitar, Entwhisle providing the bottom and Moon going nuts on drums
The who was basically Roger and pete fighting like parents who are only together because they had Keith. John is their friend who watches the whole thing and can't do anything, because they won't listen to him.
The Song is Over is just a masterpiece. I always forget how much I love this song as it is not one that gets attention but it is one of their absolute best!
It IS a masterpiece. One of my absolute favorites of theirs, and any bands. The poignant clear mountain stream of Pete's voice contrasting with the powerful, and beautiful exultation of Roger's voice on the chorus! Plus the the melody, music etc. There for me is only one song that's higher than that - "Pure and Easy". There's TSIO finishing up on first listening, and suddenly there's Roge singing with such beautiful poignancy from a different song... I'm like 'WHAT was That?!!?!?!! Blessed to hear it Live 2xs on the Who's Next Tour.
One of the greatest songs ever....period....and the crescendo at the end!!!!!! Raw emotion captured on vinyl....this song demands your undivided attention
Can't imagine not having music like this to grow up to. Music was so important to young people back then, so bands had so much support to really flourish.
I’ll defend today’s youth, being that I am one of them, and today’s music. That being said, there was a very clear shift around the 2000’s that changed how young people view music and what kind of music is popular. We still have great artists, of all genres, but they’re less mainstream. Our mainstream music is mass produced, low effort, low talent garbage compared to that of the past. What I notice more than anything, and it relates to your comment, my generation just does not value music the same as y’all did. Speaking in generalities, we don’t care about talent, complexity, innovation, skill level, or anything really besides “does it sound okay?” and that’s a tragedy.
Im 58yrs old and music is MY LIFE. You both bring a smile to my face eveytime I watch one of your reaction videos. Keep doing what you do because you do it so well. You're knowledge of music is always a breath of fresh air. I hope to live a lot longer and hope that your videos continue to be a part of my longevity.
I grew up listening to this stuff, The Who was always a favorite, the entire Quadrophenia album is top notch, Love Reign O'er Me the peak song for sure. Have to commend you guys for your honest analysis, you both are great at articulating the emotion coming from the music as well as what you liked in the arrangement and the studio mastery. Always fun to check out your videos, keep up the great work!
still get goose bumps on this one after all these years. amazing. my only criticism of it would be (miniscule) that I always wished Rodger had held that final note just a tad bit longer with that drum. "Eminence Front" or "Behind Blue Eyes" next please.
I have been a "Who" fan for well over 40 years & even own a few of their albums . . . But watching these videos is like hearing some of these new from a different perspective that only time can bring. Thanks guys !
I played some cuts from Quadrophenia for a friend in his 20s...he was like..."I can't fu..ing believe I never heard this before!!" totally blew him away.
I have always thought that Roger's voice is one of the best vocals of the time! His screams just instantly send chills through me and he uses them to emphasize the story of the song. He is not just screaming because he can and it really drives home the lyrics. Another awesome reaction guys!
Holy moly, this is my very favorite Who song. Not sure any other can top this one. So so incredibly powerful and beautiful at the same time. Other good ones from this album is 5:15 and The Real Me. For me this is their best album.
I'm so happy you guys did this song. I remember the first time I heard it I thought it was possibly the greatest rock love song ever. I would never think THE WHO are the greatest rock band of all time, but this and Won't get fooled again are truly rarified air to me.
I just saw them live last week in New York. At 78 years old Roger Daltry, the singer sounded like a young man. They had a freaking orchestra with them. TO DIE FOR.
Jason Remy I love Real Me, but it's so specific about a guy losing his girl (in the yellow house) and I can relate so bad, but Love rein or' me is an every rocker love song. We want more love, wouldn't you agree? ( 2 months ago, maybe you'll reply)...
As the song finished it occurred to me that it would be good to know that this song was from The Who's second rock opera, "Quadrophenia", "Tommy" is the first one. It’s the last song and wraps up the whole thing, so that’s why the ending is so long and drawn out. It’s not just the end of the song; it’s the end of the opera. Roger Daltrey is definitely one of the very best front-men/singers in rock, but all 4 are standouts. You need to do Pinball Wizard next.
Over the years I always tried to pick my top album of all time. I think I started with the doors debut which was the first album I ever bought. For quite a while it was Hotel California and I had a little flirtation with blood on the tracks, but I kind of cheated and decided Quadrophenia, which is a double album, is so good that it checks all the boxes. This is one of the great songs from that album.
while every song on Quadrophenia is tremendous in its own right, listening to this album start to finish is the best way to really appreciate the genius of this band and each of its members.
I don't know if you follow their Patreon, but a few months before you left this comment, they listened to Quadrophenia. It is one of my favorite reactoins they ever did. They really got it.
This one makes all my short hairs stand on end, especially the intro and Roger Daltrey's singing! Ok, the whole damn song! WTG for listening to the community, guys, and thanks for sharing it! Rock on! 🤘
Such gem of a song, in every way. Those vocals. Damn!! Yeah, Roger is amazing. He came in 1st for this song, in a poll of the best male rock performances. 👍
Here's 4 of The Who's early 10s Magic Bus My Generation I Can't Explain Join Together and 2 more knockout 10s I Can See For Miles Behind Blue Eyes They are 4 musicians at the top of their game
We liestened back when it was coming out album after album and played them LOUD and over and over. Thge debate back then between myself and my friends was which of these was the greatest rock band around: The Who, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. It was a golden age dudes!!!!
@@williamcallahan5407 The Beatles weren't active as a band in the 70s and were apart in their own category as they weren't true hard rock despite several heavy songs. Between 1972- and 1977 the favorite went back and forth as each group had great albums then. Quadrophenia and Odds and Sods were amazing Who albums, but when Physical Graffiti came out!! or Animals or even Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock and Roll and the corresponding tours it got complicated. Saw the Who tour with Quadrophenia in 74 then again in 75 with the Tommy movie. Saw all four bands in 75 and they were all amazing. I was a little let down when the Who by Numbers came out or Black and Blue by the Stones. so the balance moved toward Led Zep and Pink Floyd which I came to appreciate more and more. Those were the days!! Those were choices!
No, this is a masterpiece. You got it. When this comes on my classic rock station, I literally stop what I'm doing and focus on the music and just get lost in it. I rarely do that. I'm so grateful to have been a kid just getting into rock music when stuff like this first came out. Little did I know that, except for a renaissance in the 1980s, rock music had basically reached its peak then. I take a bizarre kind of pride in being able to say: "and I was there." It does my heart good to see younguns like you two discovering such life-affirming and enriching music. Excelsior. And Rush rules.
My very first concert was The Who in 1972 at the Forum in LA. Damn right, “I was there”. I can’t imagine music hitting another peak like that for long time if ever.
I just love watching your reactions on this old stuff that I grew up with. My life is in a mess right now, I lost my husband suddenly and you put a smile on my face when I watch you and I thank you for that. I look forward to your reactions.
Only problem you'll have with this is it's part of a lyrical and musical narrative building to this crescendo. Going straight to the track is like buying a great book and starting off at the ending. You need the conext of listening to the whole thing - ideally in one sitting by yourself.
I saw The Who on their 30th anniversary tour in Tampa, Florida. In the old sombrero stadium. We went up to the top of the stadium to "eat a sandwich", and they started playing Reign On Me. Halfway through the song it started sprinkling rain. Right at the end of the song it stopped raining. We were in awe of the coincidence. The Pinball Wizard started and they push out this huge silver ball into the crowd. It actually looked like a pinball machine from way up there. Awesome concert, awesome band.
This is one of those songs that I NEVER get sick of hearing. Like you said: It's up there with "Stairway To Heaven" in the pantheon of classic rock and roll. Everybody shines on this one but Roger Daltry DESTROYS the vocals. He usually does but this song is just a level above. Glad you enjoyed it. Beautiful song. Peace
The Who’s Quadrophenia is my favorite album of all time, by far. If you liked this, listen to the whole thing. It all blends together into the perfect storm and tells a fascinating story
I was 17 years old when Quad came out and the whole album was like an Anthem for my friends and I. Even though we were Canadian and not British, the whole mods and rockers theme and back story really got our attention. Saw them in 1975 and then again in 2013. Still killing it.
Two viewers have mentioned songs that I would strongly recommend. The first is "See Me Feel Me" , the climax of their concept album Tommy. The second one is "The Real Me" also from Quadrophenia. The Real Me is bass player John Entwistle's tour deforce. His bass playing and Moon's drumming are phenomenal. Check them out.
In my opinion, this album is the Who's best. Best musicianship, best vocals, best songwriting, best concept. This is the Who in top tier form. Doesn't get any better than this. Another guaranteed banger from this album is The Real Me. John Entwistle and Keith Moon put on a goddam rhythm section clinic.
The who opened with this song during a pouring thunderstorm in Foxboro Ma. The crowd went wild as the cool rain came down and lightning streaked across the sky! Awsome show!
The play between "rain" and "reign" in this song is incredible the way Pete intertwined the lyrics. Quadrophenia is a concept album written from the perspective of a 16 or 17 year old kid facing that part of life that we've all dealt with and had to endure. Despite some of the dark places and despair Jimmy experienced throughout the album, at the end he finally realized that the only thing that matters is love. And he wanted it to reign o'er him. If you guys are looking for your next 10: react to "Bargain" off of Who's Next!!!!! I'd call that a bargain.....the BEST I ever had....!!!
I’m a “youngster” too and I just recently got into this band. This whole album is amazing. Has a lot of reoccurring leitmotifs similar to something like The Wall by Pink Floyd. The descending arpeggio in the chorus is repeated multiple times throughout the album. By the time the album closes with this song, it hits way harder. Amazing album start to finish.
golions: Old school rocker here...If you haven't seen the movie Quadraphenia yet, do so ASAP....it puts everything in context. You never hear the album the same way after you've seen the movie (with Sting and Ray WInstone).
Karen Stonehart bought Quadrophenia on the recommendation of my best bud when I was 14. My first Who album (took weeks to save up for it), and maybe my third album ever. I only knew a few songs from Tommy at this point. Love Reign O'er Me dropped my jaw like no other song in my young life. Not even Stairway to Heaven hit me so hard. Still moves me with the same intensity.
Freddie I agree 100% !! I know they would never do it but if they did an album reaction to the whole "Live at Leeds" album they would be blown away IMO. Hands down an absolute classic... Edit: The first time I saw the WHO in concert was in 1975. I've been to a LOT of concerts and they're in my top 3 best live bands ever. The show was incredible...they also had one of the best laser light shows I've ever seen.
"Live at Leeds" is, IMO, the best live album EVER. I'm only familiar with the ORIGINAL version (gone through 3 copies on LP!!), but every single song on that version is just STUNNING. "My Generation", with the unbelievably beautiful and perfect instrumental section and killer ending, is one of the best examples of The Who hard rock combined with some of the earliest and most atmospheric prog sounds!
@@MissAstorDancer You have to check out one of the expanded versions. There's two of them, and the playing is just as spectacular as on the original release.
2 yrs later and I'm still coming back to this video. One of my all time fav songs for over 35 years, and you guys really appreciated how f#*@king great it is. Love The Who for their dynamics and transitions. Brilliant how they can get really soft (one instrument), and then BAM everything comes in and blows you away. And Roger's voice, of course. "Movie is from 2007, so maybe a little old for both of you?" The song is from 1973 when I was in junior high school. The movie just used it 35 years later. A little old for you? ;-)
2 short things: Want more FLUTE ? MY GOD by Jethro Tull. This is not a radio hit but it is the flutiest tull gets. You can go with the crowd or go with someone who knows. Pretty sure I was at that party.
The good old days.i sound like my grandfather. The best music in the world was made in the 60's & 70's. We were lucky.✌🌻🌻
The true "holy shit" moment about this song is seeing it live and realizing that after that scream, Roger still had a voice. Most other singers would have completely shredded their vocal cords.
And his voice still sounds amazing to this day!
@@loosilu not amazing but pretty good.:)
It takes some practice, but it can be done :) (I love singing this song at karaoke.)
The Who are the only band in music history to have a Lead singer, Lead guitar, Lead bass and a Lead drummer.
Led Zeppelin? Fleetwood Mac?
@@graelgraan2428 Nah... Might be able to make the case for Cream, but Zeppelin and Mac were pretty conventional in that regard.
@@graelgraan2428 Mac is a joke!!!
@@nickyd.4695 C'mon only the lead vocals and guitar are a joke. Drums and bass are solid gold in that iteration of the band post Peter Green

There was also a movie, starring Sting.
Next Who selection should be "The Real Me"! You need the full chaos/angst that came before the beautiful resolution of "Reign O'er Me" to see the full picture! Whole album is fantastic - still have mine from the 70s!
Pete Townshend is such a GREAT song writer.
I'll second that. Pete wrote some truly amazing songs.
@@aafjeyakubu5124 Then hand him the axe!
R.I.P. Keith and John!!!...... .......
You did!
So Far ahead of its time and sounds as good today as it did in the late 60s, early 70s.
There is nothing you cannot like about this INCREDIBLE song . PERFECTION!
"Behind Blue Eyes" is as tough as a ballad can be
Lulls you in with the soft opening, then - 'If my fist clenches crack it open/before I use it and lose my cool' - rest of the song has a snarl to go with the subtle beauty. Yet another Who classic.
Dynamics like none since Beethoven
Beautiful song.
The song is daltrey's apology and catharsis. The who almost kicked him out. They were sensitive musicians and roger was a tough kid who was used to setting arguments with a fight.
Roger Daltry’s voice is soo underrated. He is an incredible voice of the generation.
Pipper Lou Idk who underates him. Nobody I know. Rogers the Fn shizz.
Here we go again. Can you stop with that “underrated” bullshit? Who the heck is underrating him?
@@miked2445 Pete Townshend for one. He calls Keith Moon a genius, John Entwistle a genius, and Roger just a singer and a thug.
Under rated by WHO? In their day, he was THE Rock God! He had looks and presence and most of all the VOICE! He was a ground breaker.
@@drasticwillb That wasn't underrating him, that was dislike hahahhahaha Townshend & Daltry were famous for their dislike of each other.
If you want some bass action , listen to “The Real Me” also from Quadrophenia
The Institute my thoughts exactly. Has to be next
@@movietimeateds69 LOLOLOL
And they were incredible to behold LIVE! Electric!
@samsbro 1952 imo Keith moon is a criminally underrated drummer.
The Song is Over is just a masterpiece. I always forget how much I love this song as it is not one that gets attention but it is one of their absolute best!
I totally agree!
It IS a masterpiece. One of my absolute favorites of theirs, and any bands. The poignant clear mountain stream of Pete's voice contrasting with the powerful, and beautiful exultation of Roger's voice on the chorus! Plus the the melody, music etc.
There for me is only one song that's higher than that -
"Pure and Easy". There's TSIO finishing up on first listening, and suddenly there's Roge singing with such beautiful poignancy from a different song... I'm like 'WHAT was That?!!?!?!!
Blessed to hear it Live 2xs on the Who's Next Tour.
You're so right Deborah, in fact I've asked my kids to please play this at my funeral.
One of the greatest songs ever....period....and the crescendo at the end!!!!!! Raw emotion captured on vinyl....this song demands your undivided attention
Every time I hear it I'm a little surprised Keith Moon's arms didn't fall off!
Listening on vinyl is best!
You’re wrong. It’s not a ten. It’s an eleven. If music is made to move us, this is where it’s at.
This one does go to eleven... 🎸🎼
There are some songs where rating them is criminal
Pretty sure the who was the reason for that joke.
Well why don't you just make 10 louder and make that the max?
*ThEsE gO tO eLevEn*
Eeeeeleven
Behind Blue Eyes, pinball wizard, 515, summertime blues . The who is such a good band.
I agree, also Substitute.
@@allbottledup9513 Well put.

Well stated, David. Music isn't music without emotion. Agree, A&A understand it quite well. Enjoy watching their discoveries! Great weekend to you!
Saw them in Oakland last year, with full orchestra. Lots of Quadrophenia including this one. Still got it.

still get goose bumps on this one after all these years. amazing. my only criticism of it would be (miniscule) that I always wished Rodger had held that final note just a tad bit longer with that drum. "Eminence Front" or "Behind Blue Eyes" next please.
Im totally feeling the "Real Me" Requests and doggone it Eminece Front is a BANGER too!
Eminence Front, for sure. One of my top three favorite songs, ever.

Wow, talk about getting the chills and goosebumps
I just saw them live last week in New York. At 78 years old Roger Daltry, the singer sounded like a young man. They had a freaking orchestra with them. TO DIE FOR.
Dudes, this is the finale to a great story. You have to listen to the whole album to appreciate this final realization in REIGN .
I had about 10 recommendations, but after reading the comments, just go with "The Real Me" next. For real. We'll get to the rest later.
Oh yes
Definitely...a must...
Jason Remy lol...no shit.
Yep
Daltrey....voice from the heavens...what a gift the man has and luckily petes compositions allowed us to here it in all its glory
Got to be The Real Me next.
You’ve praised the Who’s drums, vocals and guitar, time to see how good they were on the bass too!
Their masterpiece in my eyes. If you've ever been a teenager you can identify with this record. More Quadraphenia please!
stretchgilbert your right! The whole album is amazing. Not one bad song.

We liestened back when it was coming out album after album and played them LOUD and over and over. Thge debate back then between myself and my friends was which of these was the greatest rock band around: The Who, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. It was a golden age dudes!!!!
Yes I remember that debate. The Beatles we always 1st but the debate for second was savage. The stones who and zep. I always chose The Who.
Yes it's great to see folks still excited and delighted by music I grew up with. Great music is timeless!
@TheMotorcycledog I was there too. Not my 1st concert but my 1st of many Who concerts. They always put on an amazing show.
I just love watching your reactions on this old stuff that I grew up with. My life is in a mess right now, I lost my husband suddenly and you put a smile on my face when I watch you and I thank you for that. I look forward to your reactions.

“I CAN SEE FOR MILES”
It’s what made me pick up the guitar in 8th grade 1968 ...really dig watching you guys dig in an enjoy !!!
It made McCartney write Helter Skelter
Awesome! Stay with the same album and do Can You See The Real Me next! Woot!
One of the anthems of my life! So glad you guys liked this. I suggest 'The Real Me', same album second(?) tune. John Entwhistle (bass) goin' NUTS!

"The Real Me", "5:15" & "Bargain" are also 10's!

I cant explain. One of my favorite songs by the who
This is a masterpiece of Rock orchestration!
One of the most chillingly beautiful rock songs ever. Glad y’all appreciated.
I'm campaigning for A&A to do this entire album. Keep commenting!

Another great listen from this band has to be Young Man Blues live at Leeds. One of their more underrated gems.
Yes! Time for some Live at Leeds. Andy and Alex need to hear exactly how deadly the band was when playing live at their peak power.
Love live at leeds -- magic bus kills. Best example of the on-stage explosions the who were famous for.
@@MissAstorDancer You have to check out one of the expanded versions. There's two of them, and the playing is just as spectacular as on the original release.

The song is from 1973 when I was in junior high school. The movie just used it 35 years later. A little old for you? ;-)
Passionately, The Who drive, expand and ascend, taking us on a roller coaster of emotions. Daltrey growls. One of his best.
The Real Me, Behind Blue Eyes, Bargain, I Can See For Miles, live version of Young Man Blues

That said, you are right-any Who record can be played non-stop and will be a fun time. Can’t wait to see what y’all pick next!!!
I'm so glad people today can hear music like this. But it was better being alive as a teen when this music was being recorded and played as a new hit on FM radio.
