Guys. You can count the number of rock stars who have sold as many records as Elton John on one hand. And Zeppelin, Floyd and The Who ain't one of them. Isn't it time for some EJ!?
Likely every decade he wrote a song in. ;) There's never a question to the contrary - from the get go Townsend was a prolific insightfully mature song-writer... I can't think of any meaningless or terrible song he's written.
I can only imagine how many old guys (like me) smiled when Alex said "I hope it's going to be a ballad" knowing how the song was going to yank you around at the change. You did not disappoint. Love The Who, love your channel.
LOL...I was thinking the same thing, Paul. This is the music of our ( 'old' guys ) generation and it's a total pleasure witnessing college age dudes today having such a good time with it.
My name is Alex..and I smiled too at that comment it is fun to witness reactions. I'm 54. Some of these songs I can't remember when I first heard them..maybe even the early 70's..but really heard around 79..80. By the way (Who) is Alex and who Andy?

In fact, it was an album that was intended to be fillers because they had material they couldn't fit on others. Serendipity exists. Definitely one of Rock's best collections ever. - and, superbly engineered.
Hmmm... Great point. In the 70's even if you were not an avid Who fan, but just a rock fan, you likely heard every song on Who's Next. Every single song on the L.P. was played on Rock Radio stations over the decade. "Baba O'Riley" "Bargain" "Getting in Tune" "The Song Is Over" "Going Mobile" "Behind Blue Eyes" "Love Ain't for Keeping" "My Wife" "Won't Get Fooled Again" Such album's are extremely rare...
Growing up gay in Oklahoma in the '70s, this song was my personal theme song, as it expressed my interior emotions and anxieties so well. It still moves me deeply all these years later. It makes me happy you two are discovering the rich music of those of us who are older. Thanks for the reaction.
In their original record review, Rolling Stone magazine called Roger Daltrey's performance on "Who's Next" the greatest rock vocal thus far. High praise, indeed.
You guys like Bass? The Real Me" is your next song, for sure. John Entwistle was one of the top three or four bassists of all time hands down. Git er done, men!
There’s not a bad track on this album, Who’s Next, a remarkable achievement and a towering example of the golden era of rock music. (Yeah, I don’t think I can heap any more praise on a record in one short sentence.)
The singles and other Lifehouse tracks Townshend wrote around that time that weren't on the album are just incredible. If the album had included all of these - Naked Eye, Water, Pure and Easy, Join Together, Relay, etc. it would've been catapulted to even higher echelons of music history, if that's even possible.
In interview, Roger Daltry gives this song as an example of Keith Moon's brilliance. How his drumming augmented his vocals without interfering with them.
John "Ox" Entwhistle on bass; he was unbelievable. He never called himself a "bass player"; he was always a "bass guitarist", and he played bass exactly that way. Roger Daltrey......absolutely one of the top rock vocalists of all time. He was (and still is) quite the badass, too. Definitely a guy you wanted as a friend.... :). Along with Moon and Townsend, what an incredible team that shouldn't work on paper.....all "lead" players of their respective instruments.....yet it worked beautifully. The Who, Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin......all bands that could NOT really be the same without even one member. Yes, The Who did replace Keith Moon after his untimely passing with Kenny Jones of The Faces, but he was a natural. He and Keith were great friends; from the same area of England, and Kenny was a phenomenal drummer. He was literally the ONLY choice. Just listen to Rod Stewart's old cover of "I'm Losing You" and listen to the drumming in THAT masterpiece; that was Kenny. We'll give The Who a pass on that lineup change.....but you all get my point. Sometimes a team just gels to a level where you absolutely cannot replace one cog or one gear and have the same machine.
One of the most haunting and beautiful melodies and chord sequences ever. I've been listening to this since junior high and still all these decades later it'll just pop into my head sometimes and it's just always clear as a bell and it sounds so good. Check out Pictures of Lilly from their earlier era. So fun.
This song builds so well. What you said about Keith Moon is exactly the way I see him in this song, like "Can I come in now?" No Keith. "Now" Not yet. "NOW??" Ok, NOW.
@Stephen B It means, "If you see me begin to smile (not be miserable) --immediately give me horrible, negative news (to stop that smile in its tracks, I want you to just knock me off of that elevated mood) --and do it before I progress from just 'smiling' into actually 'laughing' (as in, feeling joy) --because I'll be looked at, and also feel like, an utter Fool, by both the world & myself for ever having enough hope in this tragic existence to muster even that first little smile in the first place. The Who said it in a few lines, in 1/5th of the time I took to poorly explain the meaning, but I hope I've helped a bit. Cheers!

When The Who was starting out and barely scraping by, Entwhistle couldn't afford a proper speaker cabinet. So he used to drive a nail into a wooden post and hand a 12-inch woofer from it. I loved the suprised look on your faces when the song kicked in gear. Love that song not only because I have blue eyes, but it was the first concert I ever saw. My ears were ringing for two days!
I am 67 so this is my era's music and it is fabulous to see you two discovering and enjoying The Who! I was playing Who's Next at home about 2 years ago and my 32 year old son was home. He asked me if was playing a greatest hits album. I told him that it was a regular LP. He was impressed as he knew most of the songs and realized what an incredibly great band they are! I was in college when this album came out during the summer. I had a job driving around all day long and had a little AM FM radio on the seat next to me to listen to music. In those days most of the FM stations played a great variety of music - more so than they do today. I remember a rock station I loved called KMET played the whole album while I was listening. When it was over B. Mitchell Reed, a very famous DJ, said I'm playing this again. KMETplayed it nonstop for 24 hours. That's how great Who's Next is and how great The Who are. Love that you guys are discovering such a great band. Thanks for these videos s they're fun to watch! Ward Krause
@@ammie8659 Yes. KMET was the home of Dr. Dimento. He got his start there and eventually that show was syndicated nationally on sister stations to KMET. KMET was the leader in LA and its format was very popular for almost a decade.
First came Tommy, then Quadrophenia. Peter Townsend's next rock opera/film project would have been Lifehouse. It never saw fruition, but some of the songs from Lifehouse are the album Who's Next. Behind Blue Eyes was the theme song of the villain in Lifehouse.
Any doubts about how great this band is? I don't think they had a total of ten studio albums under their belts when Who's Next was released. This album itself could be a greatest hits compilation on its own...
The entire Who's Next album, which includes Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again, and Behind Blue Eyes, is amazing! Also, Quadrophenia, which includes Love Reign O'er Me, is epic. The entire album! The Who are genius! Thanks, guys, for your reaction.
This song instantly grabs you once they go into full hard rock mode. The vocals are killer throughout and the unsung hero is the bass as you guy's pointed out. If you want the most killer bass sound then you have to listen to " The Real Me".
Great your doing the Who again guys, it’s an amazing song . The whole Who’s next album is the Crown Jewels of classic rock. There is one more hidden Jen on this LP and it’s called “Bargain”... your’ll love it... Please review it.👍
It is a truly AMAZING song. Maybe the height of their genius! It gets in, builds to an incredible creshendo, and leaves lide a thief in the night with you left wanting more. Just a great song!
At a Who concert earlier this year as Roger was introducing Behind Blue Eyes he mentioned that on the day he went into the studio to record the vocals for this song, his dog got hit by a car and died. He was in a very emotional mood that day, as you can tell by his passionate singing. "If I smile, tell me some bad news". BTW, I think you guys are going to get blown away when you eventually react to Bargain. It's an absolutely incredible banger of bangers!!! Keith Moon's drumming on Bargain is off the charts incredible.
Been cooped up for awhile and I'm starting to look for my entertainment almost anywhere to help with the boredom. I know I can usually count on youse guys for a pretty good time, but this reaction brought a little bonus with it . . . a good belly laugh. Watching your reactions when Moonie came barreling in like a pent up, raging fuckin' bull were just what the funny bone needed to act up. It may not sound like much, but it was a freakin' great stress relief, something much needed right now. And it also goes to show that I'm a pretty cheap date. I don't need much to make me happy. So thank you for making life a little more bearable.
so glad you got back to Who again - the passion of youth here and yes, Daltrey's voice is superb and has been that for all these years. They were the band of a generation, no question.
Hey, pal, it's not a problem, and it hasn't kept me from enjoying your channel. I think you know how I feel about your work on the channel. I hope to get down your way this summer. If I do, I'll email you. Keep up the good work, fellas.
"The Real Me" is a fantastic song. The only thing is that you can only fully appreciate it if you listen to the whole album, since it's part of a cohesive, unified work. You've got to follow Jimmy's journey from "The Real Me" to "Love, Reign O'er Me." And yes, I know "The Real Me" isn't the first song on the album, but it's the one that properly introduces the protagonist.
“Keith Moon’s like...I’m comin’ in!” Hilarious and spot on. Great job guys. Stay healthy and safe. (Still hoping for Molly Hatchet-Flirtin’ With Disaster).
If you listen to the entire album fro start to finish you'll realize that the length of the song is appropriate to the album. One of the greatest rock albums of all time.
Watching you young guys just chilling to The Who makes this 59 year old feel young! These songs were so important to us and many rock bands of the eighties who grew up to their earlier music and influenced bad ass rock.
"A perfect song." YUP!!! I turn 69 this month....in 1969 Who's Next came out, threw me down the Pete Townsend/Roger Daltrey (who BOTH have blue eyes)/John Entwistle/Keith Moon rabbit hole for the rest of my life. Saw them in '71, first time, never looked back. Saw them 8 or 9 times through 2016...and they're STILL killing it onstage...missed their last tour...I hope you two lovely young men get to see them before YOU get old! Keith and John are gone, God bless 'em, and Pete and Rog are still blowing audiences away with help from Pete's brother Simon and Ringo's son Zak, who grew up idolizing Keith as his Dad's close pal....and he plays Keith's riffs beautifully. If they do another tour at age 76, DON'T YOU DARE MISS IT!!!!! Love you guys....nice job.
@@loosilu John Entwhistle stated that Live at Leeds is the ONLY album that makes The Who sound like The Who!! I have tinnitus because of this album!! I'm 58 been listening to this album since i was 12.
Live at Leeds is proto-heavy metal. The ending of Magic Bus is some of the heaviest guitar ever recorded. It is quintissential Who and essential listening to any rock fan.
@@EmptyGlass99 Yeah but metal bands can't rock like that because none of them have a drummer or bass player anything like Moon or Entwistle. And none of them can sing like Daltrey, Townshend and Entwistle.
It's kind of fun watching you guys be rock archaeologists. I've lived through all of this stuff... and yeah, Daltrey is one of the great rock vocalists.
Guys, "Who's Next" is one of the greatest rock albums of all time! And Roger Daltrey is an amazing vocalist! Great job guys, as usual. Thanks!! What's most amazing, is that The Who NEVER scored a number one! Can you believe that?
You guys need to give some props to guy who writes all the songs, Pete. Was windmilling my Pete Townsend power chords along with you guys. "Young Man Blues" next?
Great reaction! Pete Townsend said, during an interview, that he wrote this song after a concert (at the end of the tour, I think) and a groupie was waiting at his hotel room door. Apparently, he wasn't feeling it that night, being exhausted and wanting to be alone for a while, sent the groupie away and wrote this song. He was in the perfect mood it seemed to write it. Excellent song!
In my humble opinion, this is The Who's best song, with "Love Reign O'er Me" a close second. I always thought of this as a song they did from the perspective of someone rather wicked and possibly diabolical, but trying to explain that even they have hopes and dreams. as if to say "Hey, I'm an angry prick! But I'm only human, and even I have feelings." That's just my take on it. Ok, so another week without getting back around to Def Leppard. How sad! (LOL) I still think you need to get to them. Next week? Please? "Another Hit and Run", "Paper Son", or "Comin' Under Fire". Get any one of those three, and I'll stop asking for them, lol.
Justin Kase Could not agree more about the need for more Def Leppard! I’ve seen a few reactions to “Love Bites”, but not much else, which is leaving so much of their earlier, grittier, hard rock bangers on the table. “Let It Go”, “Lady Strange”, “Another Hit and Run”, “Bringing On The Heartbreak/Switch 625” (MUST be played together), “Rock Brigade”, “Too Late For Love”, etc.
I agree with your take on this song. I always found it fascinating and a little bit chilling, how the singer comes across as sympathetic but still sometimes, his real rage and maybe even evil breaks through in the lyrics.
I've always thought the same thing: it's a song from the perspective of a blue-eyed villain. He's cast in a role, but he's still human "behind [those] blue eyes". In any case, it's a GREAT song.
Earlier on, Pete wrote 'I Can See For Miles'. Great song, nearly quintessential Who. And Pete once said it was so good that he worried he may never write another song so good. History possibly proves his fears were baseless, but it's a testimony to how great that song is. Check it out!
You guys need to do The Real Me from The Who now. The bass playing is out of this world. Best bass song of all time. Plus Keith Moon just goes off on this song.
Picture a costumed Adam West singing: "No one knows what it's like to be the Batman, to be the sad man behind blue tights. No one knows what it's like to be sobbin', crime-fighting with Robin, and getting into fights. Joker's schemes, they are against me; and the Riddler's questionin' me. I've spent hours climbing buildings, pursuing Penguin, that jail-escapee-eee!" . . . and that's about all I could think up at the moment! It's 5:49 a.m. and I'm gettin' a little loopy here, folks . . .
Undoubtedly, Who's Next is my favorite Who album. And that's saying a lot. I love Quadrophenia. Tomy is excellent. It's just, the whole album is chock-full of rockers.

I like that you said, "ballads can be bangers."
Good choice fellas, now the next bangers, “The Real Me” or “5:15”. Perfect examples of straight bangers.
Ward Krause
Wasn't Dr. Demento on KMET?
@@ammie8659 Yes. KMET was the home of Dr. Dimento. He got his start there and eventually that show was syndicated nationally on sister stations to KMET. KMET was the leader in LA and its format was very popular for almost a decade.
@@wardkrause9022 KMET was my favorite station in high school. I couldn't stand the top 40 channels.
WHO YA.....
Review the 'The Real Me' to get Entwistle and Moons best.
Or my wife!
@@craigpage381 This. 'My Wife' is HUGELY underrated!
It was their 5th album.
The Who reaches down deep and grips your soul and you enjoy it.
Reminds me of my dad... One of the absolute Best Rock Bllads ever!
This song instantly grabs you once they go into full hard rock mode. The vocals are killer throughout and the unsung hero is the bass as you guy's pointed out. If you want the most killer bass sound then you have to listen to " The Real Me".
Daltry, Paul Rodgers, Freddy Mercury, Rob Thomas are the most rock solid rock singers and singers in general you'll ever run across in your lifetime.
Don’t forget Lou Gramm!
Great your doing the Who again guys, it’s an amazing song .
The whole Who’s next album is the Crown Jewels of classic rock. There is one more hidden Jen on this LP and it’s called
“Bargain”... your’ll love it...
Please review it.👍
It is a truly AMAZING song. Maybe the height of their genius! It gets in, builds to an incredible creshendo, and leaves lide a thief in the night with you left wanting more. Just a great song!
You are killin me guys THE REAL ME by THE WHO its going to be hilarious when you do it and realize you were dumb for waiting so long
Ed Collins right?!!!!
That is THE reaction I am waiting for!
Ed Collins IKR? Can’t wait to see their faces.
The Real Me ‘Live’ performance at the Royal Albert Hall, UK will send Andy and Alex over the edge.
So, that's what you say, "Hope you're having a great day, as well as a great life." I've tried for a year now to understand that. Good on you boys.
@PAPAMOZO
Sorry I suppose I do talk kinda fast there..haha. Cheers friend! 🔥🤟🏻😁
Hey, pal, it's not a problem, and it hasn't kept me from enjoying your channel. I think you know how I feel about your work on the channel. I hope to get down your way this summer. If I do, I'll email you. Keep up the good work, fellas.
@@andyandalex I've always understood it. Then again I heard it when you said it slower 🙂
One of the few albums in rock where every song is go good, got radio play, etc., the it feels like a greatest hits album.
React “THE REAL ME” by The Who 👏🏼 You’ll love Keith Moon’s drumming
THey will go INSANE. INSANE.
Jerry Merriken Another fantastic song!
Oohhhh my gosh that song is saucey
Agreed
"The Real Me" is a fantastic song. The only thing is that you can only fully appreciate it if you listen to the whole album, since it's part of a cohesive, unified work. You've got to follow Jimmy's journey from "The Real Me" to "Love, Reign O'er Me."
And yes, I know "The Real Me" isn't the first song on the album, but it's the one that properly introduces the protagonist.
You have no idea how excited I was when I saw this in my recommendation
“Keith Moon’s like...I’m comin’ in!” Hilarious and spot on. Great job guys. Stay healthy and safe. (Still hoping for Molly Hatchet-Flirtin’ With Disaster).
The Who are in my top 5 bands of all time
I was waiting for your reaction at the "jump" and you didn't disappoint me!
was worth the price of admission LOL.
I love that you guys get this band. One of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Thanks for posting during this crazy time. Love u guys
@Andy Iorio
Of course man! Nice name btw!!
"Keith Moon was like 'I'm coming in'" LoL
Great tune!!! If you ever get around to Live at Leeds you will look at The Who totally different!! My Generation! Live at Leeds!!!
LIve at Leeds, for my money, is the greatest live album ever recorded of any style of music.
@@loosilu John Entwhistle stated that Live at Leeds is the ONLY album that makes The Who sound like The Who!! I have tinnitus because of this album!! I'm 58 been listening to this album since i was 12.
@@michaelnemeth3704 the only way Leeds can be improved is to CRANK. IT. UP!!!!
Woohoo! So glad y’all did this one.
I was wondering when you guys would get round to this one! Classic!
Guys, "Who's Next" is one of the greatest rock albums of all time!
And Roger Daltrey is an amazing vocalist! Great job guys, as usual. Thanks!!
What's most amazing, is that The Who NEVER scored a number one! Can you believe that?
Whaaaaaaaaa????????????!
The lyrics to this are brilliant. "If I swallow anything evil, put your finger down my throat.." etc etc
You guys need to give some props to guy who writes all the songs, Pete. Was windmilling my Pete Townsend power chords along with you guys. "Young Man Blues" next?
LIVE AT LEEDS
Young Man Blues. Live at Leeds or the live video of them doing that song, at The Isles of Wight Festival, which is terrific.
My first who song. 45 years ago.
It's 5:49 a.m. and I'm gettin' a little loopy here, folks . . .
I concur with other commentators who are suggesting "The Real Me."
Fantastic choice guys! I discovered this song when I was very young and it still knocks me out every time!
Undoubtedly, Who's Next is my favorite Who album. And that's saying a lot. I love Quadrophenia. Tomy is excellent. It's just, the whole album is chock-full of rockers.
Hey guys, I just watched this like 5 times in a row, I just missed this song and I noticed your facial expressions ya'll were into it as much as I was!!!
Has to be 'the real me'. Moon is an animal on this!
That’s why they call it Classic Rock. In the top 5 albums of all time.
Next one : The Real Me. Best Song for Daltrey and Entwistle ...and Moon... and Townshend. So typical WHO banger.
Thx for the nice Videos :D
.. I know how it feels son. Cause it runs in the family.
This whole album is a masterpiece. "My Wife" is criminally underrated.
