In the record and movie Quadrophenia, this is the climactic song; Jimmy, the hero of the story, has discovered that everything he believed in is false, he's been totally betrayed by the stuff he's based his entire personality on. So picture an young man who's realized how sold out he's been, standing on the ledge, deciding whether to throw himself off or not. And when Roger Daltrey sings the final "LOVE!" you can decide for yourself what Jimmy decided to do.
Some of the finest music ever created. Stands alone as a classic out of context. Several layers of double meanings and the rain as a relief and rescue instead of a curse.
Yeah, he’s comparing love to rain, the way it falls upon us. But the chorus isn’t “rain”, it’s “reign”, as in rule. Love, rule over me. Be my controlling principle.
I feel like Lex understood this song exceptionally well on the first listen. This track was from their Quadrophenia LP, which turned out to be a film of the same name. The moment was a very emotional one, in the film. Was lucky enough to see them perform this album in it's entirety when on their 'Quadrophenia and more' tour in 2012. Amazing soundtrack!✌
@@Bulshitero Very Nice. I did see the Quadrophenia Show twice, and The Who in 1980 at the LA Sports Arena, it was the first Tour w/Kenny Jones, alas, I never got to see the Clash. Almost got to 2nd US Festival Memorial Day Weekend ‘83, but Not.
Roger Daltrey sings this with *passion*. This is the concluding track on their "Quadraphenia" album, which is basically a Rock opera. Lex gets the gold star for getting the dual motifs. The character in the story is having a catharsis; he wants to be subject to love ("reign" over him), and wants it to renew/refresh him ("Oh God I need a drink of cool, cool rain"). An epic finish to an epic album! 💯🔥
Brad, in terms of connecting with the song, it makes more sense in the context of the album, which is a rock opera. This song comes at the very end, and it is the resolution of all of the tensions that have been driving the story. I think the song is actually directed at God. Townshend wrote a number of love songs that were about the search for God, that can also be interpreted as loving another person. Like many great works of art, it can mean different things to different people. I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction!
@Vern Sherris emm but Brad wasn't born in the 60 Brad is born in the 21st technical era where someone in Scotland can know what country life in America was like at the click of a button.
@Vern Sherris Yes & NO!! I mean, there´s a culture clash, but that does not have anything to do with having (or not) experienced Mods & Rockers battles on the beach, mate. I never experienced that either, and, despite it all, I felt absolutely connected with the song the first time I listened to it. I think it has more to do with LACK OF MUSICAL SENSIBILITY. Period!
I'm a Brit currently living and working a long way from home...but this song, with the sound of the rain, and the sound of The Who, immediately takes me back there.
Lex, you are a genius!!!! Couldn't have explained the meaning of the song better if I tried. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this one. I always request it. Wot a f***ing epic song! Brad and Lex you are awesome.xxx
I was at The Who show at Rich Stadium in Buffalo back in 1989 and when The Who started playing Love Reign O'er Me it started to rain. Not a drop before. Afterwards, singer Roger Daltrey said to the crowd "Let's see the Stones top that."
I taught English for a lot of years and watching young people feel their way through an accurate interpretation--regardless of whether it connected emotionally or not--is such a delight. You guys are awesome. Thanks for bringing life to a song that came out when I was a teenager, and making it new all over again.
Wife here..You guys are rocking some classic rock tonight...Such a beautiful arrangement...so emotional yet STRONG..One of my husband's favorite songs!..AWESOME REACTION!!!
I think this song is a freaking masterpiece. The piano at the beginning sounds like rain and thunder. Daltrey's vocals are outstanding and I love Townsend's guitar solo. So beautiful.
One of my favorite Who songs. Lex had most of what it means to me. Simplified, after a tough day, its who you go home to that makes everything all right. Its that person who gets you, unconditionally, together, you are not alone, you're a team. They wash away every stupid, screwed up moment of the day and make it easier to deal with just by being there. Money is great and makes life better in some ways, but love makes even the crappiest of situations withstandable. "LOVE Rein O'er Me" what a precious and grateful thought.
I'm glad fate brought you two together face-to-face and then left the rest up to you. You two are perfect for each other - i hope your lives together are long and wonderful. Loved your reaction to this beautiful song. Thanks.
Oh Lex, my beautiful sweet 70s gal, you absolutely shined in this masterpiece! And absolutely nailed what this song is all about, which in my opinion, is The Who's best song! Rock on, girl!
Has Brad ever connected with a song, all the videos I've seen he just sits there reading the lyrics and then says I don't get it. Lex feels it, she's a free spirit!
Way to go Lex! The chorus verse is "Love reign o'er me", that is Love RULE OVER me (o'er is contraction of over). So it's the singer calling to be completely dominated and controlled by love.
Brad doesn't feel it. Lex: "Because you're Brad-Bot." That's fire! Although Brad, I do feel bad that you don't feel the emotion and power in your soul for songs like these. :-(
In fairness Brad is analytical. It's comforting to him if he can identify with it. He's actually started coming around a lot. His interpretation isn't always the common one but the fact he tries says a lot about his perseverance. Good for him for trying.
The term "O're" is a slang British word for over. I agree that it seems to be used for the word "on" as well. This indeed is a very intense, and emotional song. Roger Daltry's vocals are superb.
Roger Daltrey exceeded everyone's expectations of him on this track, proving that he was much, much more than 'just another pop singer!' He reigns o'er this song!
If anyone thought Daltrey was "just another pop singer" by the time they got to Quadrophenia they must have been living under a rock. The previous two albums were Tommy, and Who's Next for goodness sake. But, I do agree this song is epic.
This is love. It is the nurturing, the kissing, cuddling, lying asleep in each others arms, opening yourself up and being vulnerable. It is also the powerful, the "I will climb the highest mountain and swim the deepest sea, to come back to you". This song is a perfect 10.
I've heard this songs 100's of times and Lex nailed the meaning and was right on the nose about everything after listening to it once. I am super impressed! The songs Pete Townshend writes are visceral yet at the same time very much intellectual. He is very precise in his writing and there is always deep thought put into them. Great job Lex!!
In this episode of Brad & Lex, luscious keys and rain saturate the atmosphere awaiting dashing strings and hi hats leading to lead singer Roger Daltrey in all his bravado followed by kicks, drumrolls and snares that engulf and evaporate all rainfall ironically yet allowing hope for more downpour. The monstrous sound shows no mercy to Brad as he becomes helpless kin to a palm tree in forceful wind "swaying" from side to side, apart yet so close to Lex whom at that moment unleashes her "rainmaker bop" along with "sorcery fingers". She will share her thoughts on the experience peacefully of the "artistic stuff" and continue to produce various "bops" and "sways" with spirit finger highlights, "push pulls", a few "oohs", and "cross snaps". "Bradbot" takes full accountability for his inability to express emotion.
I've seen The Who twice in Seattle and this was my favorite song and Roger Daltrey was so amazing that you got goosebumps. They put on an incredible show.
Whoop Whoop!!!! In a different way than normal, just want to see your faces change each time the the music changes! This is Amazing!!! Thank you!!! LOVE!!!!!
An absolutely great song and one of my favorites from The Who. I also recommend The Real Me, 515, Dr. Jimmy, Squeeze Box, Join Together and The Kids Are Alright
One of my favourite Who songs. Lex did a great job with explaining the rain symbolism. But he is also sing "reign o'er me" i.e. he wants love to rule him IMO
This is the very definition of a Lex song. Sorry Brad but Lex is like me and people like us were instantly connected to this song for life from the very first listen. No explanation was ever needed because this song was our heart and soul on display in full effect.
Reign (nor rain) is the more old-world concept of someone or somebody ruling. Think the reign of Henry VIII, as an example. In this instance he is seeking Love to rule his world
I have seen this song performed by The Who live twice in recent years with an orchestra. Both times was the closest I have come to crying at a rock concert. I have heard the song so many times recorded, but never live. I consider hearing once live with an orchestra a bucket list item I never thought I would experience. Twice was even better. In another reaction video for this song they have a better version of the lyrics. The lyrics actually switch back and forth between reign and rain and between O’er and on in some surprising places (in the chorus) as Lex mentions.
Lex is so cool, it's great how the two of you complement each other, fill in the gaps, or however you want to say it. Roger Daltrey's screams for me are the most effective screams out there, straight from the soul.
One of the best songs ever made. Its an amazing album closer. Has amazing vocals, amazing bass playing, gutairs, and the piano is masterful. Loved your analysis and thought on the song.
Lex once again you nailed it! It's love reign over me.Awesome song sung by Roger Daltry lead singer for the WHO...I'm not surprised Brad didn't get it.
I've always seen 'Reign O'er Me' chorus as a plea to to have Love take over him. Reign can mean command, so he's asking for love to rule his life. Someone without love but longing for it might wish that on themselves. He's desperate. The rain vs reign aspect is just Pete Townsend's lyrical genius showing through. His songs have always been some of the most carefully crafted in rock, often taking him many months to write.
69 till Keith died they were one of the great live bands. Kenny Jones, his replacement was good but nothing on Keith. My favourite performance is live at the Isle of Wight festival 1970. Especially young man blues. Amazing power.
Good afternoon, Brad & Lex! I hadn't heard this song in a long time and I forgot how much I love it. Everything about it...Roger's powerful singing, Keith's pounding drums and the change in feel in the different sections...just kicks a$$!
The key to the song is the word Reign. Sure, it's a homonym for rain, and leads to much of the imagery in the song, but as it is spelled it means to rule over. The persona in the song is reaching out to Love in the abstract to take control of his life.
You've done two of the three greatest Who songs now: this one and "Won't Get Fooled Again". The third is "Eminence Front", the grooviest Who song ever. If "Eminence Front" won't get your foot tapping and your head bobbing you gotta be dead.
The r&b and blues singer Betty LaVette did an amazing interpretation of this song when the Kennedy Center in Washington DC honored Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Babra Streisand was also honored that night and could be seen turning to Pete asking if he wrote the song, and telling him it was fantastic...
More like a Vulcan 🖖 than a robot. Brad clearly has emotions but he just doesn't wear them on his sleeve. I think Brad's a sharp, serious guy and he doesn't like to be carried away. Live long and prosper, Brad!
Yep, seen them 7 times, including the original band in the old days, man, they were as electrifying a band as I ever saw, and I saw pretty much everyone good in rock since 1970. The WHO rule!
To me, this song is more of a plea and a cry for someone in a desperate time then it is about any one particular person. And I do find refuge in this song quite often!
It’s not that love is like rain in that it’s both beneficial and destructive. It’s a song of desperation for love, like you can be desperate for a drink of water.
I expected Brad to notice the play on words and make the connection by the difference between 'rain' and 'reign'... the first being nurturing and refreshing - verses - while the later being ruled - chorus. Lex picked up on it just listening to the music. That aside, the piano and drums throughout the song create the ambiance of the phases in a storm - i.e. that thundering sound in the intro is piano and drums.
I've listened to this more times than I could possibly count. I love Lex's take on the rain. Couldn't have put it better. See the film. It tells the whole story of Jimmy, and how his journey brings him to this moment. A masterpiece.
This song is deliciously epic! It's The Who at their MOST epic! I simply am incapable of tiring of this song. In my book, they're above Zeppelin, and I love Zeppelin. You MUST hear BEHIND BLUE EYES now. THANK YOU for finally getting 'round to this one!
It just doesn't get much better than The Who at their best (which they are here). Eddie Vedder covers this one beautifully, but there is no replacing the original masterpiece.👍🤘❤💔
In my sixies..not my first time hearing...with my older age I now put my own concept of a soul yearning of the latter rain...that God promised out of love. My want ...come quickly LORD JESUS
Their reactions are beautiful, but it's good to have some CONTEXT too. It might have helped Brad to know that this was one song in a Rock Opera - the first of it's kind! The story builds to this amazing outpouring of emotion. We're coming up on 50 years since Quadrophenia was released! Amazing. Bravo for giving it a listen!!!

O M G. I was thinking "He's singing about THE BEAUTY OF LOVE. AND THE LOWS OF LOVE." And then, like always, Lex said the same thing...
I seen the Who in Buffalo in 1982 And it rained when they played this song They even commented on it
Lex nailed it. This is one of my favorite songs, all time. Nice reaction y'all.
Brad is like The Terminator trying to understand human emoton.
"Why do you cry?"
More like a Vulcan 🖖 than a robot. Brad clearly has emotions but he just doesn't wear them on his sleeve. I think Brad's a sharp, serious guy and he doesn't like to be carried away.
Live long and prosper, Brad!
I saw Quadrophenia live at Madison Square Garden. Still to this day the best concert I’ve ever seen. Pete Townshend is a god.
Yep, seen them 7 times, including the original band in the old days, man, they were as electrifying a band as I ever saw, and I saw pretty much everyone good in rock since 1970. The WHO rule!
Always interesting to see folks raised on 4/4 time listen to 3/4.
To me, this song is more of a plea and a cry for someone in a desperate time then it is about any one particular person. And I do find refuge in this song quite often!
Finally. You just listened to the greatest rock love song by the best rock band in the world. Congratulations.
Thank you. I Love You guys.
It’s not that love is like rain in that it’s both beneficial and destructive. It’s a song of desperation for love, like you can be desperate for a drink of water.
I don't know what you do for a living Lex, but your intuitive feeling for art is an untapped resource.
Even if you can’t follow along with what’s being said, the musical arrangements cannot be ignored Brad. This song is so beautiful.
An absolute masterpiece
Listened to this song thousands of times over the years and you've pointed out things I never thought of.
You need to listen to this whole album Quadrophenia it is epic. This is coming from someone who lives and breathes Led Zeppelin
The piano and synth playing and arrangement are world class. Just gorgeous. ⭐
A true rock classic. One of the greatest rock songs ever written and preformed.
I've listened to this more times than I could possibly count. I love Lex's take on the rain. Couldn't have put it better. See the film. It tells the whole story of Jimmy, and how his journey brings him to this moment. A masterpiece.
Love love love Lex's take but ya'll's dynamic is great to watch! BradBot! 😆
They were great. Truly one of the best Who songs
She nailed rain with both aspects of love too! BRAVO!
She’s AAA alright . Class Nice couple. Enjoy
It just doesn't get much better than The Who at their best (which they are here).
Eddie Vedder covers this one beautifully, but there is no replacing the original masterpiece.👍🤘❤💔
I see the song as “love rules me” Reign as a verb meaning “to possess or exercise power”. Love has power over him.
In my sixies..not my first time hearing...with my older age I now put my own concept of a soul yearning of the latter rain...that God promised out of love. My want ...come quickly LORD JESUS
Their reactions are beautiful, but it's good to have some CONTEXT too. It might have helped Brad to know that
this was one song in a Rock Opera - the first of it's kind! The story builds to this amazing outpouring of emotion.
We're coming up on 50 years since Quadrophenia was released! Amazing. Bravo for giving it a listen!!!
Love how Lex instantly clicked with it - such a joy to watch. PLEASE react to The Who on the Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus doing A Quick One (While He's Away)!
One of the best Rock Bands ever for sure!! This is one of my top 3 Who songs.✌️✌️✌️
