Hey! UPDATE: I tried both recipes (using a milk frothier and then immersion blender when it arrived this morning). Lotions came out similar for me (despite numerous small mishaps) but this one is very slightly more viscous/thick and takes a teeny bit more to blend in to my skin - I'm thinking it might be the shea butter + honey combo as opposed to the vegetable glycerin which has left my skin more slick feeling? - could also be my likely inaccurate measurement quantities though! _______________ I've watched both videos, read the partner blog, been gathering ingredients and I think I'm very nearly ready to give this lotion thing a whirl! * I have a couple of things I'm curious about; I hope you don't mind me asking (sorry if they are answered somewhere - I promise I tried looking!) 1. How do these two recipes compare to one another in terms of the final product? - Should I just try both and find out? 2. * Re: whirl : Was there a particular reason you chose milk frother in this one and immersion blender in the new one? As a former owner of a handmade bath and body business , I was soooo very pleased to hear you explain why your viewers need to use a real preservative. THANK YOU! Over all the years, more than a decade actually, that I was in business I lost track of how many people told others they don’t have to have a preservative or how many customers moaned about a preservative being in my lotion. This is an excellent and clear and easy to follow recipe, so thank you for all you do for the DIY community. I see that this is an old post but I just happened upon it, practically 4 years later. Now, my comment is, for real beginners (I am an intermediate student), it may be important to point out that before starting, everything needs to be thoroughly sanitized and disinfected down to the container to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Thanks for all your hard work to bring us safe recipes to slather on our faces and bodies. I've just recently made your winter solstice cream and I absolutely love it. I substituted the squaline for pumpkin seed oil and omitted the cetyl and panthenol simply because I didn't have them. And because I have sensitive skin I also left out the essential oils (just in case). The rose water is enough to scent the lotion nicely. My skin and I thank you 😊😊

Wonderfully done video. Thank you! I love to make my homemade lotions, and I do it a bit differently. The same process but I like to use hydrosols as the water base, and for the oil base, I use my infused oils ( I am a Herbalist :)) that have fragrance plants macerating. Hydrosols also work as a strong antibacterial. My favorite is to infuse fresh rose petals for a few weeks, then use that as my oil portion. I also like using rose hydrosol. Rose is known to have cell regenerative properties, so it works beautifully for a face cream/lotion. I love using either sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil (has tons of vitamin E in it), along with my solid fats. Again thank you for your time in showing how to DIY a face lotion. So easy to make, much cheaper, and fun to do. Blessings!

And I always read them so keep it up! I am really interested in using Cetearyl Olivate/Sorbitan Olivate for an emulsifier. Have you worked with it? Thanks, Ashlynn! That description box is a lifesaver, it's a great place to put things I forgot to say (along with those handy notation boxes, haha). I haven't worked with Cetearyl Olivate/Sorbitan Olivate yet (first step-find a Canadian supplier), but I'm always game to experiment with new emulsifiers :) Tomorrow's post features lecithin, though not as an emulsifier this time. I'd definitely like to try developing a from-scratch e-wax sort of thing... I've fiddled with it in fits and starts but haven't managed anything share-worthy at this point.
I've worked with the emulsifier Sorbitan Olivate, it makes lighter and fluffier texture and can withstand wider pH with great stability, but I didn't like the fact that made the lotion greasier and heavier feels on the skin than regular emulsifying wax derived of palm oil actually, but if you have super dry skin, it may work for you. Lecithin is nice for the skin, although it's a little trickier to emulsify and if you're not careful it may make the final product a little grainier and it may separate after a few weeks if you don't completely emulsify.

And i finally made this lotion. i made it in two places 😍😍😍😍 i used cocoa butter and it turned out perfectly right, I also used Shea butter just to make my choice. I loved cocoa butter more and it smells so amazing. thank you again.

I just made an emulsion for the first time! 🤗 I didn’t have all the ingredients in any of your recipes so just made a lotion recipe up based on the typical usage amounts in your videos and I’m so happy with the result!!! Didn’t expect such a lovely result at the very first time!! Also first time I got to use a preservative, and I find that it stinks! 😩 I used a blend of dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol. Will the smell dissipate after a while? The essential oils I added did not fully mask that smell.

After a day, my lotion thickened up too much and i get white traces while applying over skin. Is it because of the emulsifying wax or because of the Shea? Could you please help? I used vegetable glycerine and sweet almond oil instead... But followed the ratios.

Viscosity is mostly due to the size of the oil phase, and that white effect is called “soaping”, which can be caused by the emulsifier, but can also be fairly complex to tease apart and solve. Just made this marie!😍 it is the best lotion recipe I've ever tried! Used optiphen as preservative, followed the guidelines on your blog post,just wanna know the accurate amount of optiphen I should use here?🙈 just to see if I'm right. I will test this product and call it a 'Body Mousse' as it is so mousse-like!😍💞
The maths are very simple: weight of finished product in grams x percentage recommended by preservative (2%, 4.25%) = (z) divided by 100= amount in grams. Example: 250grams finished x 1.75% preservative = 437.5 / 100= 4.375 grams of... I’ve used made up numbers as the maker of the preservative I selected had a range from 0.75-2.0%. Here’s a link to ingredient information as often the chemical name sounds really bad but is not at all. www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/blog/products/all-about-stearic-acid.html. Once you start making these at home and work out the cost, you’ll see how much name brands charge! And often they use silicone lubricants, too.
I made this and am ready to do it again. I'd like to substitute oils that are better for my sensitive, mature (code for OLDER THAN DIRT), somewhat oily but still normal in some spots skin. Like argan or rose oil, maybe meadowfoam. Would you still use the shea butter?
If you're using this on your body and hands, I'd probably avoid more expensive oils like argan (meadowfoam would be lovely, though!). If your skin is normal to oily you might consider mango butter or cupuacu butter instead of shea; both are lighter than shea and feel lovely on the skin :)
I'd like to make one for my face and body. So should I make two different lotions. Also....I'm curious about allantoin. Is it a healthy, natural ingredient (it seems to be)? Would it be included in the oil or water...or neither?
Hi Belinda, regarding allantoin, as far as I know (I've been making lotions and my own skin care products for past 10 years), it's derived from natural source (plants) and it's a good ingredient to use if your skin is prone to allergy and tend to be sensitive (it has a calming effect). You use it by combining with water (put the allantoin powder and heat it up together) and has a tendency to crystallise if you put too much of it or in cold temperature (i.e. fridge) and it will become liquid again in warmer temperature but as long as you don't use too much it should be fine.

Raw shea butter has been tough for me too. The same companies I have used(raw organic, etc)..the consistency is never the same. (It wasn't cheap either). Guava shea I hear is great, tough to find.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching:-) you should never, ever, EVER make your own sunscreen. It is nowhere close to as easy as just adding zinc oxide to lotion-that's like thinking it's possible to make your own penicillin by letting bread go moldy. Sunscreen is a drug in the sense that it must be clinically proven effective, and is not the sort of thing that you should ever try to make it home unless you are trying to develop skin cancer. Spend money on the real stuff-your skin and body will thank you!
I just made a bunch of “lotion” using bees wax. It’s nice but it ain’t lotion ! Then I found you. Fortunately I still have 3 jars of Comfrey ready to go and this time, thanks to you, it will be lotion. Liked, subscribed and saved. PS, now my wife will be happier and as the saying goes, Happy Wife - Happy Wife, or something like that.

For sure, and I use distilled water now, but I also used tap water for years and never encountered any issues. Distilled is definitely best practice, but tap water (in most parts of the world with good, potable tap water) is not the end of the world.
@@lexington9836 the minerals wont leave the tap water if you just boil it, distilled water goes through an evaporation process to remove the minerals (which dont evaporate), bioling tap water would just get rid of the bacteria, which is still a good thing to get rid of

I just made this a few hours ago. The emulsifying wax NF set up quicker than you said - it's already behaving like normal lotion. It was my first lotion and a lot of fun! I just wish I'd used my big stick blender, because the milk frother made things very very frothy before it set up.
not to mention it would accelerate the spoiling of the final product ( if it doesn't get destabilized)... I mean the water since it comes from a tap and not from a sealed bottle or any kind of container that can hold pure water ( distilled) can still have some bacteria in it.. and not necessary from the outside source but from the actual tap. Let's face it, few people drink tap water nowadays without tinkering with it first.. or even if they do, the immune system kicks in and you won't get sick, but for something that's gonna be a sitting duck for all the microorganisms around the house ( i.e. a water based lotion)... well call me paranoid, but I'd be safer about that.. she could've at least used floral water ( that's distilled and has certain plants extract that may act as antioxidants)
What is implied with this comment is the need "Distilled" water. Boiling tap water does not distill it -- nor remove the minerals and other factors that can change the outcome.

Small batches used within 3 weeks may not need some of the preservatives, if giving as gift it's a must.... as you have no idea how recipient will use it. I strongly suggest sanitising everything, counter tops, kitchen equipment and obviously jars and while making DON'T stick your fingers in mixture, wear gloves. After getting MRSA, from farmers market product, almost losing limbs... not something I mess with any longer. Girl just squirted lotion tester, yuck on her hand and rubbed it on my arm...trying to upswell also flirt to make sale... within an hour... small abrasion on arm began to become more irritated, washed and bed... next morning delirious, temperature so to the emergency room as advised by Dr... followed by almost 3 weeks in the hospital.
I'm honestly quite surprised you've paired a story about nearly losing limbs from an improperly preserved lotion with a "might not need preservatives" message! No matter how sanitized your counter tops are, anything with water will likely not last more than a few days before microbial activity starts to get out of hand if a preservative is not included as our ingredients are not sterile, and neither are our kitchens, no matter how hard we may try. Thank you for sharing your story-it is always good to have a reminder of how safety is paramount!

Just used this as a base recipe, I added several other organic, cold pressed oils (from “The Ordinary” Company) and some Shea and coconut oil, as well as Young Living ess oils......I must say it goes through a scary looking stage, but after a great deal of mixing, it magically turns into a beautiful body butter! Thanks for a great tutorial, it’s the best one out there!
Lovely! The best way to include oils like the ones from The Ordinary is to include them in your oil phase, removing other oils to make room for them so you can be sure your emulsion will still work. If you add more oils than the emulsifier can handle the emulsion will fail. So, for instance, you could remove 2g from the safflower oil in the recipe and add 2g of coconut oil :) I imagine that change will eliminate the scary stage!

Awesome video Marie! I've made a similar lotion several times now and I can attest to the fact that you do need a broad spectrum preservative. Even without contaminating it with my hands, it started to form mould within a week. I wanted to add a little helpful tip that works beautifully for those bottles with small openings: I purchased a coated cotton icing bag and stick the tip (doesn't require a decorating tip) into the bottle and squeeze the bag, just like icing. Works like a hot damn! I am definitely gonna get some of those spatulas and a mini blender; they are great tips. Thanks!
Thanks Kathy-great tip! I usually use a funnel since they're easier to pop into the dishwasher, but they definitely require some jiggling and fiddling to get the lotion to fall through, especially if it's a thicker lotion. I think you'll LOVE the spatulas, they're so great-especially for makeup!

Hi, I tried making this recipe yesterday. The problem in that after I combined the two parts, the oil one and the water one, I saw that they were not mixing together when blending with a whisker. Then tried with vertical mixer, and instantly it became a cream, so I though yeeey, it works. Added the preservative and tried to mixed it in and suddenly my mixture started separating. I blended again with the blender, all seemed good again, but I was not sure about the mixture anymore... It was not emulsifying completely. So I searched again the emulsifying wax to see, maybe I was doing the proportions wrong. Then it hit me: it was a co-emulsifying was.... 😭 The wax was sorbitan olivate... And the site where I purchased it from had recipes that used it as a single emulsifying wax and when I read about it, I really did not see the Co-emulsifiant part .. And now, the second day, the mixture is starting to separate. I will to buy another emulsifier... But is there a chance to salvage this batch... Or should I throw it out and start new again...? Thanks you and by the way, I love your videos. This is what got me started on the DIY cosmetic road 😍😁.
I personally would throw it out. When I started out, I started in small batches,for eg. 57g =2oz so if it spoils, it's not much. A good emulsifier would be e-wax NF or you can try BTMS50. Good luck! Edit: always do your research before you buy an ingredient, saves you time and money.

This is an excellent and clear and easy to follow recipe, so thank you for all you do for the DIY community. I see that this is an old post but I just happened upon it, practically 4 years later. Now, my comment is, for real beginners (I am an intermediate student), it may be important to point out that before starting, everything needs to be thoroughly sanitized and disinfected down to the container to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Thanks for all your hard work to bring us safe recipes to slather on our faces and bodies. I've just recently made your winter solstice cream and I absolutely love it. I substituted the squaline for pumpkin seed oil and omitted the cetyl and panthenol simply because I didn't have them. And because I have sensitive skin I also left out the essential oils (just in case). The rose water is enough to scent the lotion nicely. My skin and I thank you 😊😊

Wonderfully done video. Thank you! I love to make my homemade lotions, and I do it a bit differently. The same process but I like to use hydrosols as the water base, and for the oil base, I use my infused oils ( I am a Herbalist :)) that have fragrance plants macerating. Hydrosols also work as a strong antibacterial. My favorite is to infuse fresh rose petals for a few weeks, then use that as my oil portion. I also like using rose hydrosol. Rose is known to have cell regenerative properties, so it works beautifully for a face cream/lotion. I love using either sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil (has tons of vitamin E in it), along with my solid fats. Again thank you for your time in showing how to DIY a face lotion. So easy to make, much cheaper, and fun to do. Blessings!

Thanks, Ashlynn! That description box is a lifesaver, it's a great place to put things I forgot to say (along with those handy notation boxes, haha). I haven't worked with Cetearyl Olivate/Sorbitan Olivate yet (first step-find a Canadian supplier), but I'm always game to experiment with new emulsifiers :) Tomorrow's post features lecithin, though not as an emulsifier this time. I'd definitely like to try developing a from-scratch e-wax sort of thing... I've fiddled with it in fits and starts but haven't managed anything share-worthy at this point.
I've worked with the emulsifier Sorbitan Olivate, it makes lighter and fluffier texture and can withstand wider pH with great stability, but I didn't like the fact that made the lotion greasier and heavier feels on the skin than regular emulsifying wax derived of palm oil actually, but if you have super dry skin, it may work for you. Lecithin is nice for the skin, although it's a little trickier to emulsify and if you're not careful it may make the final product a little grainier and it may separate after a few weeks if you don't completely emulsify.

Hey! I just made an emulsion for the first time! 🤗 I didn’t have all the ingredients in any of your recipes so just made a lotion recipe up based on the typical usage amounts in your videos and I’m so happy with the result!!! Didn’t expect such a lovely result at the very first time!! Also first time I got to use a preservative, and I find that it stinks! 😩 I used a blend of dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol. Will the smell dissipate after a while? The essential oils I added did not fully mask that smell.

Viscosity is mostly due to the size of the oil phase, and that white effect is called “soaping”, which can be caused by the emulsifier, but can also be fairly complex to tease apart and solve. Just made this marie!😍 it is the best lotion recipe I've ever tried! Used optiphen as preservative, followed the guidelines on your blog post,just wanna know the accurate amount of optiphen I should use here?🙈 just to see if I'm right. I will test this product and call it a 'Body Mousse' as it is so mousse-like!😍💞
The maths are very simple: weight of finished product in grams x percentage recommended by preservative (2%, 4.25%) = (z) divided by 100= amount in grams. Example: 250grams finished x 1.75% preservative = 437.5 / 100= 4.375 grams of... I’ve used made up numbers as the maker of the preservative I selected had a range from 0.75-2.0%. Here’s a link to ingredient information as often the chemical name sounds really bad but is not at all. www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/blog/products/all-about-stearic-acid.html. Once you start making these at home and work out the cost, you’ll see how much name brands charge! And often they use silicone lubricants, too.
I made this and am ready to do it again. I'd like to substitute oils that are better for my sensitive, mature (code for OLDER THAN DIRT), somewhat oily but still normal in some spots skin. Like argan or rose oil, maybe meadowfoam. Would you still use the shea butter?
If you're using this on your body and hands, I'd probably avoid more expensive oils like argan (meadowfoam would be lovely, though!). If your skin is normal to oily you might consider mango butter or cupuacu butter instead of shea; both are lighter than shea and feel lovely on the skin :)
I'd like to make one for my face and body. So should I make two different lotions. Also....I'm curious about allantoin. Is it a healthy, natural ingredient (it seems to be)? Would it be included in the oil or water...or neither?
Hi Belinda, regarding allantoin, as far as I know (I've been making lotions and my own skin care products for past 10 years), it's derived from natural source (plants) and it's a good ingredient to use if your skin is prone to allergy and tend to be sensitive (it has a calming effect). You use it by combining with water (put the allantoin powder and heat it up together) and has a tendency to crystallise if you put too much of it or in cold temperature (i.e. fridge) and it will become liquid again in warmer temperature but as long as you don't use too much it should be fine.

Raw shea butter has been tough for me too. The same companies I have used(raw organic, etc)..the consistency is never the same. (It wasn't cheap either). Guava shea I hear is great, tough to find.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching:-) you should never, ever, EVER make your own sunscreen. It is nowhere close to as easy as just adding zinc oxide to lotion-that's like thinking it's possible to make your own penicillin by letting bread go moldy. Sunscreen is a drug in the sense that it must be clinically proven effective, and is not the sort of thing that you should ever try to make it home unless you are trying to develop skin cancer. Spend money on the real stuff-your skin and body will thank you!

First mistake... tap water. Always use distilled water in making lotions and such. Tap water still has items in it that can react with your additives.
For sure, and I use distilled water now, but I also used tap water for years and never encountered any issues. Distilled is definitely best practice, but tap water (in most parts of the world with good, potable tap water) is not the end of the world.

It's foolproof enough to forego pH testing, which is one of my favourite things about it!

I just made this a few hours ago. The emulsifying wax NF set up quicker than you said - it's already behaving like normal lotion. It was my first lotion and a lot of fun! I just wish I'd used my big stick blender, because the milk frother made things very very frothy before it set up.

In theory it should be possible, though I haven't tried it :)
Good first video but using tap water isn't a good idea. The metals can end up destabilizing the emulsion.
not to mention it would accelerate the spoiling of the final product ( if it doesn't get destabilized)... I mean the water since it comes from a tap and not from a sealed bottle or any kind of container that can hold pure water ( distilled) can still have some bacteria in it.. and not necessary from the outside source but from the actual tap. Let's face it, few people drink tap water nowadays without tinkering with it first.. or even if they do, the immune system kicks in and you won't get sick, but for something that's gonna be a sitting duck for all the microorganisms around the house ( i.e. a water based lotion)... well call me paranoid, but I'd be safer about that.. she could've at least used floral water ( that's distilled and has certain plants extract that may act as antioxidants)
you did not watch the video, she said she didnt show boiled water to avoid steaming the camera, but you should used boiled aka sterile water.
What is implied with this comment is the need "Distilled" water. Boiling tap water does not distill it -- nor remove the minerals and other factors that can change the outcome.

Small batches used within 3 weeks may not need some of the preservatives, if giving as gift it's a must.... as you have no idea how recipient will use it. I strongly suggest sanitising everything, counter tops, kitchen equipment and obviously jars and while making DON'T stick your fingers in mixture, wear gloves.
After getting MRSA, from farmers market product, almost losing limbs... not something I mess with any longer. Girl just squirted lotion tester, yuck on her hand and rubbed it on my arm...trying to upswell also flirt to make sale... within an hour... small abrasion on arm began to become more irritated, washed and bed... next morning delirious, temperature so to the emergency room as advised by Dr... followed by almost 3 weeks in the hospital.
I'm honestly quite surprised you've paired a story about nearly losing limbs from an improperly preserved lotion with a "might not need preservatives" message! No matter how sanitized your counter tops are, anything with water will likely not last more than a few days before microbial activity starts to get out of hand if a preservative is not included as our ingredients are not sterile, and neither are our kitchens, no matter how hard we may try. Thank you for sharing your story-it is always good to have a reminder of how safety is paramount!

Just used this as a base recipe, I added several other organic, cold pressed oils (from “The Ordinary” Company) and some Shea and coconut oil, as well as Young Living ess oils......I must say it goes through a scary looking stage, but after a great deal of mixing, it magically turns into a beautiful body butter! Thanks for a great tutorial, it’s the best one out there!
Lovely! The best way to include oils like the ones from The Ordinary is to include them in your oil phase, removing other oils to make room for them so you can be sure your emulsion will still work. If you add more oils than the emulsifier can handle the emulsion will fail. So, for instance, you could remove 2g from the safflower oil in the recipe and add 2g of coconut oil :) I imagine that change will eliminate the scary stage!

Awesome video Marie! I've made a similar lotion several times now and I can attest to the fact that you do need a broad spectrum preservative. Even without contaminating it with my hands, it started to form mould within a week.
I wanted to add a little helpful tip that works beautifully for those bottles with small openings: I purchased a coated cotton icing bag and stick the tip (doesn't require a decorating tip) into the bottle and squeeze the bag, just like icing. Works like a hot damn! I am definitely gonna get some of those spatulas and a mini blender; they are great tips. Thanks!
Thanks Kathy-great tip! I usually use a funnel since they're easier to pop into the dishwasher, but they definitely require some jiggling and fiddling to get the lotion to fall through, especially if it's a thicker lotion.
I think you'll LOVE the spatulas, they're so great-especially for makeup!
I ended up finding the spatulas at Kitchen Stuff Plus near me. And they were having a Buy 2 Get 1 FREE Sale! BONUS! I stocked up. Hopefully you can find a store near you, Kathy. Or you can order online.

I love your channel. I only make soap at the moment but I will start making my own creams and lotions when my storebought stuff is used up. This one is definitely one I will use. It seems to be light enough to use over a face oil.

I love the go toob! I keep my homemade earthpaste in mine and it's so easy to take completely apart and clean.

Hi, I tried making this recipe yesterday. The problem in that after I combined the two parts, the oil one and the water one, I saw that they were not mixing together when blending with a whisker.
Then tried with vertical mixer, and instantly it became a cream, so I though yeeey, it works. Added the preservative and tried to mixed it in and suddenly my mixture started separating. I blended again with the blender, all seemed good again, but I was not sure about the mixture anymore...
It was not emulsifying completely. So I searched again the emulsifying wax to see, maybe I was doing the proportions wrong. Then it hit me: it was a co-emulsifying was.... 😭 The wax was sorbitan olivate... And the site where I purchased it from had recipes that used it as a single emulsifying wax and when I read about it, I really did not see the Co-emulsifiant part ..
And now, the second day, the mixture is starting to separate.
I will to buy another emulsifier... But is there a chance to salvage this batch... Or should I throw it out and start new again...?

I personally would throw it out. When I started out, I started in small batches,for eg. 57g =2oz so if it spoils, it's not much.
A good emulsifier would be e-wax NF or you can try BTMS50.

Edit: always do your research before you buy an ingredient, saves you time and money.
