You will hear people telling you there will never be another "Artist A" or "Artist B," but when they're talking about David Bowie, it's absolutely true. He was an unique and genius performer and songwriter, who never chose to stand on his laurels or follow a formula to get a hit. He discovered new ways to perform, and developed different stage personas, and constantly evolved. I discovered him in the early 70s when I was in junior high and I have never gotten tired of listening to him. I could list songs for you, but the comment I just read by Dagmar S. is a fantastic list to start with. I was moved to tears when I heard he passed away. He was a huge part of my life as a music fan.
The day they announced his passing, I'd just bought "Blackstar" on iTunes. I cried all the way from Canberra to Sydney, listening while driving home (3hrs). I've loved Bowie since I first heard "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" as a 12 year old (when It came out).
I met him in a restaurant in San Francisco years ago and ALMOST DIED. He was lovely, spoke to me for awhile, made ME feel comfortable. It was magic. I'LL NEVER FORGET IT!!!!! ❤
lucky you. I saw him on the street in New York in his Pretty Things days. We ended up walking beside each other and Bowie was wearing the same wide camel pants an dhat he was wearing on his album cover with long blond hair. We stopped at a corner, and he opened a car door to help an elegant older woman out of the car. Then he walked on. I nodded at him and he tipped his hat at me and smiled. I didnt want to interrupt ot impose myself on him. I wish I had had the opportunity to talk to him. I've met lots of pop stars, they dont intimidate me at all.
Bowie is one of those artists who is completely his own genre. An absolute musical genius. And also - CLASS. Always 100%, pure class. Bowie. It feels so wrong that he's gone.
Absolute class act. I remember seeing him grill (in the politest English way possible of course) an MTV interviewer as to why there weren't more black artists on the channel. The guy made a lame, roundabout explanation and Bowie said , "I understand your point of view..." and proceeds to laugh at the ridiculousness of the answer. The man truly was a hero!
David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He has had a lot of great songs including "Ziggy Stardust", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", "Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl" etc. Sadly he passed away in 2016.
He wrote this song in the 1970s while staying in Berlin. The wall he's talking about was the Berlin wall that anyone attempting to climb over it got shot. It divided Berlin into East and West Berlin. The wall fell down in 1989. My mom was born in Germany before they built that wall and to this day regards David Bowie as an angel who aided in getting rid of it. I call him Davy. He's dead but he's still around watching over all of us as he did whilst alive in his body. Watching over his loved ones in particular, but he's a blessing to all and always has been. Love you too Davy. ❤️
David Bowie is a Legend. He was 3 steps ahead of everything, a genius, writing his own music, a Broadway musical, actor, no matter what he did, it was gold. This version of Heroes is incredibly performed, shows his passion and that incredible voice of his... Truly one of a kind...he was 55 years old when he was singing this...
He is iconic. Songs like Young Americans, Let’s Dance, Ashes to ashes, Major Tom… he’s got a huge catalog. His bassist is Gail Anne Dorsey and she is amazing!
I normally love the live version, but for this song, the recorded version might've been better first. You'd have a better chance at recognizing the song (maybe). David Bowie's live performances are incredible, and no two are the same. Whatever the case, his voice can't be beat. This man and his song 'Changes' saved my life - quite literally. He went through so many changes in every way, from appearance, to style, you name it. You'll LOVE his variations as you explore one of the few artists who was Freddy Mercury's contemporary, in innovative lyrics, in 'wild' fashion, and in behind-the-scenes compassion.
Yup, the album track for this one is special. You might also look into 'Wild is the Wind' off the album 'Station To Station' if you'd like to have him pin your ears back with sheer singing power :)
Arriving late to say: underrated comment. Fantastic production, creepy Eno synths you can hear echos of in this (great) live performance, and most of all Fripp's guitar.
An absolute legend. There will never be another. The woman on bass is Gail Ann Dorsey, from Philly. She's a phenomenal musician. If you go down the Bowie rabbit hole, be sure to check out the studio recordings. Bowie was very inventive, using recording techniques that were years ahead of his peers. His catalog is deep and rich. Enjoy!
David Bowie is the soundtrack of my life, from Space Oddity to Blackstar and everything in between. Every few years, he would shed his skin, become someone totally new with a new sound that always seemed years beyond the current music scene. I cried when he passed away because it felt like I had lost a friend. I miss him. 😢
My heart still breaks-miss him terribly. I listened to 'Low' not long ago and cried. Glass Spider tour, I saw the show and was in utter amazement for months. I met this wonderful, fun man at a hotel bar two years later-he bought me a drink!
I hope you will listen to his song, The Man Who Sold The World. He wrote it about himself, as he sometimes felt that he fooled people into thinking he was great. It's hard to believe that there were times, when he had self doubts, and didn't see his own talent as being as great as others did. I'm 59, so I was a teen back in the 1970's when David was already an icon in the music industry. I fell in love with his voice, his music and I can say that in all the decades since then, there have been only a handful of entertainers that upon hearing about their deaths, I cried. David Bowie was one of them. Even now, I get a lump in my throat in thinking about the fact that he's gone and we will never get to hear a new song from him.
Bowi is epic! The Jada joke... Bowie always surrounds himself with awesome musicians. Even saw that some of his back up singers were sometimes from other popular bands (ex: Sneaker Pimps signer). Also, He really called out MTV back in the late 80s for not being inclusive or representing all of Americas music. Back in the days where MTV acted like only pop and rock existed.
Yes... the build. Dramatic. It just ensnares you and drags you forward. No escape. SO much more powerful than the studio cut. "I didn't know Jada Pinkett played bass." Gold.
Saw the Serious Moonlight tour in Houston 1980. Best concert ever. His death left a crater sized hole in music lovers hearts. If he is unfamiliar to you, begin with a song from his teens, Space Oddity. He was never happy repeating and lived to innovate. His final cd, Blackstar, is stunning. Video filmed as he was dying. Incredible.
David Bowie was one of the artists that I respected but wasn’t “my” style of music, when I was young. Then a few years before his death, I began listening to him more and he became one of my top favorite vocalist and artist of all time. I’d place him as my number 1 or 2 of all time.
David's bass player was Gail Ann Dorsey. She is a fantastic amazing bass playing woman. I dont know how many years she was with him but she is still playing now. I went to a Lenny Kravitz concert just before Covid and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Gail is now playing with Lenny, another favourite of mine. This song was apparently written when David was living in Berlin for a while. When he sings about standing by the wall, he is talking about that. It is a beautiful song and has been covered by many. I think my favourite cover was done by Motorhead. Lemmy puts his spin on it and it is great. I was devistated when David died. He was like no other before or after him. We love you and miss you terribly " Jonesy".
Bowie was brilliant and original. His beautiful wife Iman and daughter Alexandria were at his side when he died. So glad you enjoyed this remarkable artist's talent. Truly one of a kind.
David Bowie was one of the pioneers of punk rock I remember when I was a teenager him and Iggy Pop used to tour around together My favorite song was suffragette City Rock on
Bowie possibly single handedly encouraged people to dream and think out of the box. The number of genres of music he invented or adapted is what he is famous for. He was a chameleon in music and appearance. Inventing new persona for his multiple changes of direction. Non fans won't even know his 1960s "Laughing Gnome" Song. 😂 I still can't believe how low key his death was. Don't forget the impact he had on music. Incalculable. And a genuine Gentleman.
I remember the Laughing Gnome. He always had such a wide range of (odd) topics! Yes I have so many Bowie albums, even one that was a pirate album back in the 70s - not sure where that went...
You have discovered an iconic legend doing what he does best, putting his heart and soul out there for everyone to connect with. The band is like a single unit, complimenting and blending with each other perfectly in a singular sound that puts a groove that you can't resist but fall into love with. I love the solo break that is just three notes but expresses so much in that simplicity. A favorite of mine and now yours too. Good choice and welcome to Bowie's universe of entertainment, a master class musician and authentic human being.
When I'm asked who my all time favorite musical artist is, without hesitation I name this man. I was fortunate to see him in 97, in a nightclub venue, smaller than this one, with Gail on bass and Reeves Gabrels on guitar. (Earthlings tour). Unforgettable night. Side note...I was touring around on Google street view the other day and the club I saw this show in was gone and replaced by a condo mall. I don't know why but the way it hit me was really profound, to see parts of my history disappearing leaving only imagination. Maybe that's the popularity of these reaction videos. We're just a bunch of older generation folk keeping it alive by reliving it with newer and/or younger listeners. But I digress. Alot of people owe alot to David Bowie. You just entered a fantastic rabbit hole.
David Bowie was incredibly creative, eclectic, funny, and just talented in general. He was at ease performing, whether it was his music/characters, acting, even interviews. This barely touches the tip of the iceberg, and “Heroes” is awesome. Can’t wait to see you react to more Bowie!
The studio version of "Under Pressure" is sung by Freddy Mercury and David Bowie (they also wrote it together). You reacted to Queen doing it live, but you should definitely give that duet a listen!
Bowie was one of my favorite artists of all time. He was always fresh, always super talented and willing to push push push the edge. An amazing talent of the century.
Bowie is timeless and my favorite artist of all time, even though I have preferences for certain time periods of his career. Gail Ann Dorsey is amazing - I had the privilege of seeing her perform some Bowie songs live a couple years ago. She's a phenomenal accompanist, but she is also a phenomenal artist in her own right.
Oh, Polo. I’m so sorry you missed out on seeing Bowie live! I saw him 5 times and each time his shows just got better and better. It wasn’t just a concert! It was the experience of a lifetime! The last time I saw him was his Reality tour and it was an accumulation of the soundtracks of my life. I still cry when I hear David Bowie cuz I miss him so much it hurts! I was so young when I started listening to him and he always had that rebellious spirit to his music that you can best relate to when you’re a teenager. And yes, this was our anthem! I wish you could have been there, but you can experience the Reality tour because they made a video of it! Watch it if you ever get the chance! To me, it was his best tour because his music goes back decades and he included so much of it in this concert that we actually had an intermission cuz he played for nearly 4 hours! David Bowie is the consummate rock ‘n’ roll star. ⚡️
David Bowie had the most amazing voice! Some more songs to check out would be: Dead Man Walking, Wild is the Wind, Space Oddity and No Control. I saw him 3 times live and it was great! He also did a lot of movies, was a painter and a sculpturist, and he was also able to play 14 instruments. 😀
Heroes was first released in 1977 from the album of the same name, (which I bought in 1977), and it still stands up and sounds as good today as it did back then.
This track was written by Bowie when he was living in West Berlin, so that's where the "wall" part comes in. In the studio version they facilitated the vocal build (from almost a whisper to a full-on wail) by gradually turning Bowie's headphone volume down so he had to scream to hear himself. I don't know about you, but I think that is an awesome technique. Love this track.
The white Duke was an amazing songwriter and interpreter...absolutely and always bringing innovation and style in the music...RIP DAVID AND GOD BLESS YOU!
I always go with the recorded version when it comes to new music, whereas the live performance is the cherry on top. For decades Bowie put out music that moved mountains. 😁❤️
The last several years have been devastating. Petty, Bowie, Prince... soul crushing. Nothing today is even close. I love that you dig this. Tahoe tune for you? LET'S DANCE...Bowie
No one EVER will equal the iconic genius of Mr Bowie, I am privileged to have walked on the same earth at the same time as this amazing man...saw him live twice too, so ljcky. RIP David, you are missed and loved ..💔✨✨✨✨🇬🇧
David was the coolest man on the planet and even after his death he is still the coolest. Unique, way ahead of his time, inspirational and just fucking cool.
The glorious Gail Ann Dorsey, on bass. This was a BBC recording and sadly the awe-inspiring Reeves Gabrels was not on lead guitar. I worked with Bowie, late 90s. Miss you dude. No RIP! Like he's not raise hell in the afterlife!
Wow Polo, I really hope you continue down The Bowie Rabbit hole!! One of my favorite Musicians!! So talented and eccentric!! Always changing his look, if you watch him In some of his very early stuff, you will know What I mean. I will be here to watch all Bowie reactions (and all your others too🥳)! Thank you ❤️❤️
Sterling Campbell is the amazing drummer here. Sterling was trained by Dennis Davis. Dennis was part of the DAM trio: Dennis Davis, Carlos Alomar, George Murray. Extremely talented musicians supporting David Bowie in the 1970s. The bassist you're watching here is Gail-Ann Dorsey.
I am so fortunate and appreciative of being able to witness this tour in Melbourne. One of the standout moments was Under Pressure. The bassist performed the roll of Mercury. It was a remarkable rendition and moving.
Glad you enjoyed it! There are so many good Bowie songs to choose from, but for sheer power, I'd go with Ziggy Stardust or Space Oddity. You might also like Under Pressure. You already know the bass line!
he was amazing. His tribute with Annie Lennox, Under Pressure, was astounding. This was an important part of the soundtrack to, "On the Perks of Being a Wallflower"
"It's one of those tracks you don't want to end"...heh well ---welcome to Planet Bowie. Band is super tight (and I didn't even spot Catherine Russell, who kills on keys/synths and backing vocals). The drummer, Sterling Campbell, was a kid neighbor of Dave's past tour/studio drummer Dennis Davis (brutha could *bang*), who took him along to a local gig.
David Bowie is a treasure that you should get to know as well as you can. Gail Anne Dorsey is the fabulous bassist and Mr Sterling Campbell is rocking those drums. He's always been a superb player and I first saw him way back in the early 1980s, he was already killin it, and a good guy too.
A very different take on my favourite Bowie song. So many great songs in so many different styles from a musical genius. I was lucky enough to see him live twice - brilliant.
Bowie wrote dozens of rock-pop classics, but "heroes" is maybe the classic of the all. He wrote this song (together with brian Eno) during his "Berlin-years" and this song reflect this time like no other. Definitly a part of the soundtrack of live for millions ... and this song wasn't a big chart sucsess but one of the greatest songs of all time (Rolling Stone, Time magazine)

Bowie is best listened to recorded as the production is incredible. The Best of Bowie is an album I still play after so many years.
Same time and age I discovered him.
Listening to a random assortment of his songs, it sounds like five different artists. He was never afraid to change and try new things.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is one the greatest glam rock/albums in popular music. Incredible musician and artist.
Certainly. When artists you know could share even more of their genius with the world pass away, it feels especially wrong.
There are few celebrity deaths that affected me as much as him.

Bowie was the ultimate singer songwriter. He knew how to pick superb musicians for his bands. The old man rocked until the very end.
Adrian Belew on the Live album was astonishingly, wicked good!

I spent a year in the absolute worst depression. This song kept me alive, and for that I thank you, David Bowie 💖
One of the most iconic guitar riffs ever.
Aaaaahh Mr. Bowie 😎 an Icon to be sure!! (😂 pinket on bass 😂) Thank you 💕
New viewer here. I’m glad I found this. David Bowie’s Heroes is one of my favorite songs by him. Thanks
He was the coolest man on the planet married to the most beautiful woman on the planet. I miss him every day.
David Bowie, a rock icon & he & his music are loved by millions.
Heroes was first released in 1977 from the album of the same name, (which I bought in 1977), and it still stands up and sounds as good today as it did back then.
Careful, David Bowie is another rabbit hole all his own. (one well worth exploring)
Saw the great much missed Bowie do this live at Bingley Hall Staffordshire England in 1978. Still remember it like it was yesterday.
flawless.
beautiful.
breathtaking.
The last several years have been devastating. Petty, Bowie, Prince... soul crushing. Nothing today is even close. I love that you dig this. Tahoe tune for you? LET'S DANCE...Bowie
Bowie is King Hero..
One of my heroes. Saw him twice. He sang this at Live aid and it gave me goosebumps.
The man was on another level...So much fun to watch ...
Thank you David, thank you for everything! ❤
Bowie was such a talent. Saw the
Diamond dogs tours when was 15. Was just such a wonderful show. Miss new music from him.
Loved this concert, first time I seen this venue version. Excellent
Bowie, along with George Michael and Queen hold a special place in my music fandom as bands/artists I prefer live to in studio.
So glad I saw all of those live. So lucky to be around when this music was made!
RIP Bowie thank you 🙏 for a trip down memory lane
No one EVER will equal the iconic genius of Mr Bowie, I am privileged to have walked on the same earth at the same time as this amazing man...saw him live twice too, so ljcky. RIP David, you are missed and loved ..💔✨✨✨✨🇬🇧
This is an iconic song by one of the most iconic artists of the 20 th century. And if, anyone disagrees they are just wrong.
David was the coolest man on the planet and even after his death he is still the coolest. Unique, way ahead of his time, inspirational and just fucking cool.
David Bowie was such a genius with his songs. Many have become the soundtrack of my life. I was shocked when he died.
He was an actual showman, even past the glam years. Never disappointed, always surprised us.
💙 ... a beautiful masterpiece. Thank you David Bowie. ☮🕊🕊
Wow Polo, I really hope you continue down
The Bowie Rabbit hole!! One of my favorite
Musicians!! So talented and eccentric!!
Always changing his look, if you watch him
In some of his very early stuff, you will know
What I mean. I will be here to watch all
Bowie reactions (and all your others too🥳)!
My absolute favourite song by Bowie, i was a young teenager when this came out and its still amazing.
I am so fortunate and appreciative of being able to witness this tour in Melbourne. One of the standout moments was Under Pressure. The bassist performed the roll of Mercury. It was a remarkable rendition and moving.
He was so awesome!!!❤
This song always seems to bring me to tears every time I hear it , I don't know why ??? So beautiful !!! 🤘🔥🎸💯 ...
Glad you enjoyed it! There are so many good Bowie songs to choose from, but for sheer power, I'd go with Ziggy Stardust or Space Oddity. You might also like Under Pressure. You already know the bass line!
To my knowledge, Under Pressure is on Queen's album, not Bowie's. I could be wrong, but I have always seen the artists listed as Queen and David Bowie
he was amazing. His tribute with Annie Lennox, Under Pressure, was astounding. This was an important part of the soundtrack to, "On the Perks of Being a Wallflower"
One of the coolest guys to ever do it . Pure Genius....Like yourself Polo...
David was one of a kind. And he was kind and funny. Saw him several times throughout the years. I have a self portrait he did over my fireplace. 😢
STILL can't believe he's gone! What a talent!
Stevie Ray Vaughan played on Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” before SRV was really recognized. Bowie appreciated him.
Welcome to the wonderful world of David Bowie.
You will not regret it !
I saw him live. He was mesmerising and almost unnervingly intense. A gig I'll never forget.
This is very cool song! On every gig he did a different version of Heroes. Sometimes he changed the lyric chapters and even singing style.
Ahhh here we goooo!!! If you’re goin down this iconic rabbit hole I’m so there!!!
The sheer tempo to the crescendo of this song is why it’s my favorite Bowie tune. Just keeps building. It’s epic!
My whole right thigh is tattooed with a portrait of Bowie as Ziggy Stardust! No one will ever replace him ❤
Best single performer I ever saw live. Miss David.
A very different take on my favourite Bowie song. So many great songs in so many different styles from a musical genius. I was lucky enough to see him live twice - brilliant.
Pure singing, no autotune 👍🇳🇱
Bowie wrote dozens of rock-pop classics, but "heroes" is maybe the classic of the all. He wrote this song (together with brian Eno) during his "Berlin-years" and this song reflect this time like no other. Definitly a part of the soundtrack of live for millions ... and this song wasn't a big chart sucsess but one of the greatest songs of all time (Rolling Stone, Time magazine)
