I hear you, and I can relate. I grew up in Austin, and we had an incredible punk scene in the mid 70s throughout the early 90s, during the post-punk, post new wave eras. I was a teenager, and went to all the punk, and new wave shows in the clubs, as minors were allowed. I was lucky to see amazing local Austin punk and new wave bands, as well as national and international bands, for next to nothing. What was even better, was that the venues were tiny, and my friends and I got to meet and hang out with a lot of the musicians; many of whom went on to be very famous later in life. When that happened, it was nearly impossible to see them in the same way, ever again. But, I am glad so many of them got famous, good for them.

Watch the whole concert. It's worth every second and I defy you to stop smiling through the whole thing. My face ached from grinning ear to ear. It was incredible.
I saw them one time, at Forest Hills Stadium, August 19, 1983. They rocked. The whole stadium was electrified with their energy. l recall David running around the stage as he does here. It was an amazing show.
I had the awesome experience to see this phenomenal band in the early stages of their beginnings at a club, many old timers would know about in NYC, called CBGB's back in 1976. As a young dude at 22, I was starry-eyed when I met my first ever female bassist. Tina Weymouth blew me away. She also went on the perform with her own group, a side project, called The Tom Tom Club. The drummer Chris Frantz is also her husband and played drums for the Club. Thanks Polo for sharing this awesome concert and reaction. Looking forward to more of this content from you. Stop Making Sense the concert is incredible to witness.
Tina Weymouth is one of the greatest bassists, she still plays as well today as she did in the 70's and 80's. She's 72 years old now. David Byrne is a musical genius, and he always has something fun up his sleeve for the live shows. You should check out "Burning Down the House" "Wild Wild Life" "Once in a Lifetime" "And She Was" "Road To Nowhere " to mention a few. Glad you enjoyed this, they've always been one of my favorites. I graduated high school in '82' so this brings back a lot of great memories. Take care and stay safe. ❤ & ✌️
I was fortunate to have attended two of the nights they filmed this at The Pantages Theater. I was a senior in high school and had seen Talking Heads several times previously, but this particular tour was so well choreographed and the sound quality was superb! REALLY wish they would unite for more shows!
They were a great, very original band - and the movie from with this is taken (Stop Making Sense) is one of the most well constructed and executed concert films of all time.
This was the soundtrack of my college years and it changed my taste in music. TH were all individually brilliant musicians and this concert will go down in history as one of best live performances of all time. Stop Making Sense is an experience you won’t regret 🙏🏼
This performance is from what is widely considered the best live performance concert ever. It's called "Stop Making Sense"and you should definitely watch / listen to it someday
Like other people have said, TH was a large part of making new wave huge and was a big influence on other bands. David Byrne, the leader, is a mad genius whose ideas and innovations were historic. You should also note that Tina Weymouth was an amazing bass player in a time when female bassists were almost unheard of and probably still are. Check out Girlfriend Is Better from this same concert/movie, so you can see how much they used rhythm and killer beats to create their sound.
Hi Marty. I don't need to look up Carol Kaye. Carol Kaye is the most heard unheard of musician in the World. She laid down the groove on some 10,000 recordings of various genres and was a key member of the elite session band The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew included other such notables as Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. She's still going strong at the age of 88 and has a UA-cam channel. Tina Weymouth had never played bass before the Talking Heads. She was founding member Chris Frantz's girlfriend. But she had taught herself to play guitar. They couldn't find a bass player they liked so they asked her to give the bass a try. She succeeded magnificently. What more could you ask? Carol Kaye's eminence among all bassists, not just female, does not throw shade on Tina Weymouth's incredible talent in any way, shape, or form. Give credit where credit is due. Cheers.
It was 1980 when a friend (still a close friend😊) introduced me to 'Remain in Light'. That record blew my mind and opened myself up for a wise scale of music. Later i got the feeling that this record defined the decade. I saw Talking Heads in the very early 80ies at Cologne (Germany) when a couple of songs of the 'Stop Making Sense' tour where not even released on a record. 'Talking Heads' are still one of my favourite bands and i really think, that music aged very well.
I was a teenager in the 80s and remember the talking heads all over MTV. I vaguely remember this sing. I didn't know how good it was. I've been missing out
You should consider watching this whole concert video. In my opinion one of the best live shows ever caught on tape. It’s called Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense. It is fantastic the whole show starts as a blank stage and David Byrne comes out with a boom box and an acoustic guitar and destroys “Physco Killer” and then as the show goes on they gradually build in the rest of the stage. Highly recommend !!
I’ve loved the Talking Heads since the first time I heard them back in 77. I just recently turned my 23-year-old son onto them and he loves him just as much.
My man I just found your channel. Love it. You absolutely owe it to yourself to watchi this whole concert film, Stop Making Sense. It's filled with bangers and weirdo peformance art. Absolute classic.
Eccentric is the best way to describe The Talking Heads!! I hope Life During Wartime isn’t a prophecy that will be soon fulfilled 😢. One of my all time fave’s
So I have seen Stop Making Sense in a movie theater several times...including seeing it the evening it opened...and the intensity of the movie and this song in particular is hard to describe. More than once, when Byrne takes off and starts running around the stage, most of the audience in the movie theater starts running as well...up the aisles, through the lobby...and the audience is on their feet and dancing for the rest of the show. The musical adventure that got the original Talking Heads lineup to THIS is truly amazing. They started out as a stripped down quartet of art students with stage fright. Between working with producer Brian Eno and Adrian Belew, the influences of Fela Kuti, and then stack the band with funk masters like Bernie Worrell (synth), Alex Weir (guitar), and Steve Scales (percussion) they truly caught lightning in a bottle. Stop Making Sense is where it all comes together for all to see. I do think it is worth listening to "Remain In Light". Also check out the double album "The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads" which consists of live tracks, many featuring Adrian Belew on guitar.
Born in 83 like my first born son. I was an early Talking Heads fan from 1977. Scottish born David Byrne is an on the spectrum autism genius songwriter and performer. They were so funky. This is an art performance. It was the 80's. Brought in a world music vibe, working with Brian Eno has a huge influence on their work, too. And Bassist Tina Wymouth created the funkiest bass lines. I listen to only all of Talking Heads right through most of the 80's. A deep catalogue. Watch their live in Rome concert too. Burning Down the House is one of my faves,
I saw The Talking Heads in '83 in Austin. They took all the seats out of the concert hall! Everyone had to stand & dance! It was fantastic! I will never forget it!
I was an early adopter of Talking Heads... I am very glad that you found them. They changed the world of music with their art - and only kept getting better
I am so glad you enjoyed and APPRECIATED this great performance by Talking Heads!!! This whole concert is amazing! David Byrne, and his bandmates are brilliant! Peace!
Great selection! This concert was designed to be filmed by director Johnathan Demme. It starts out w/Byrne alone on stage and slowly adds ppl, sets, instruments, etc as each song is performed. One of the great concert films of all time. Thanks Polo!
I saw the Talking Heads in 1982 at Vanderbilt University my freshman year. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. I been to a lot of concerts since then. Live Aid, Sabbath, Santana, U2, a bunch of great bands. This concert the whole place was on its feet dancing and grooving the whole show.
I'm a huge fan of the Talking Heads. My dad had this show on VHS as a kid and I remember I was maybe 5 when I had my first memory of "oh my God. I wanna be this guy" and ever since then I have been a pretty animated guy. I can't sing as well as him, but I can hold a tune decently. One of my all time favorites.
From one music lover to another, you need this whole concert in your life. It changed my life, honestly. You don’t have to react to it, but watch it. I wasn’t even a Talking Heads fan before I watched it. It’s a movie called “Stop Making Sense” directed by Jonathan Demme. It’s just a concert, but it’s amazing. It starts with David Byrne, the singer on the first song. Then every song they add a new member. It sounds crazy, but it’s sooooo entertaining. I’ve watched it hundreds of times. This song is with the full band. Don’t be like me and watch it late in life. Cheers! ❤
This is one of those instances where the live recording beats the studio hands down. Something about the frenetic nature of the running makes it crazy good.
I think it's worth noting that David Bryne, the lead singer, is on the autism spectrum and I 100% think that's part of why they've got such a dynamic, different sort of sound than most bands. His quirky singing combined with the rest of the band's (esp Tina, the bassist) outstanding playing just makes this an outstanding band.
"In his bestselling 2012 book, 'How Music Works', Byrne said he had border-line Asperger's syndrome, an autistic disorder often characterised by above-average intelligence and social awkwardness."
@@karenfryberger4260 To be fair, that might be why the rest of the band isn't very fond of him. Outright social awkwardness isn't always a good thing when you are in a band with three other people. There is no doubt he was creatively brilliant in the late 70s thru the mid 80s... but by many accounts he's kind of a jerk. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Asperger's Syndrome is a legitimate thing... but just maybe some times the aloof jerk doesn't have a mental disorder... he's just a jerk.
He came into our local (NOLA) bar on New Year's Eve 2015 and, while we (on mushrooms) stood around freaking out that he was there but not approaching him, he loaded up the juke box with amazing songs and then left. So cool!
David Byrne toured last year (2022), it’s definitely worth checking out the videos on UA-cam. He is amazing. The same style is recognizable 20 years later.
David Byrne and Freddie Mercury from Queen IMHO put on the greatest stage shows ever. They are both great compsers, writers, directors and and musicians. David has this crazy ability to run around stage for 2 hrs and never miss a breath or a note while singing his artistic mind is unbelivelible. Thank you for doing this one haven't thought about them in years gonna watch the whole concert now...peace
One of the most underrated and underappreciated bands of all time . You should definitely explore more from them . I recommend some lesser known but amazing songs such as Blind , Mr. Jones , or the Lady don't mind . The hits can wait.
Underrated and underappreciated by whom? They were extremely appreciated and highly rated in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, at least. Glad that UA-cam is around so that younger generations can appreciate them all over again.
@@Heracles_FE so i guess one day all the bands of your generation will be known as underated. What a loony statement. Just think, by your account, the beatles are underated🤭🤭🤭
@patrick brandimarto So you wanna bet 90 out of that same 100 wouldn't know who the Beatles were? I still hear Queen , Aerosmith , Van Halen , Led Zeppelin, THE BEATLES, etc constantly played and referenced in the mainstream culture , the Talking Heads WERE ALWAYS considered counter culture before the term was invented .
Bless your heart, born in 1983! I was 29 when Talking Heads hit the scene with Psycho Killer. Saw them in concert around the time Burning Down the House came out at the Greek Theater. SO good to see younger generations 'getting it'. Their music still holds up! Luv you buddy!
The amount of energy of The Talking Heads of this performance was incredibly fun & the crowd had a great time watching that performance. You have any questions 😂
@@robertirvine6307Yup, and I think the point of the comment was that neither Polo nor many of the posters here have taken note of the lyrics. Yeah, it's a banger, yeah Byrne is a remarkable showman and the band absolutely nails it... but the lyrics are serious. Give me chills every time, especially these days when we've seen the US Capitol attacked, people openly threatening violence and talking about civil war. The message is that calamitous events can make partying to good music, and all that goes with it, a distant memory. Don't assume it can't happen to us. "Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit? Heard about Pittsburgh, PA? You oughta know not to stand by the window Somebody see you up there I got some groceries, some peanut butter To last a couple of days But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones Ain't got no records to play" - Talking Heads
@@civildiscourse2000 Absolutely this music is serious. But it's not just music, it's performance art. The good time party atmosphere is meant to be totally ironic. The danger is the American public aren't getting what goes on because they are too busy with their superficial lives. Polo included it seems. Listen to the chorus of the song. "This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin around..."
i listened to them in the '80s and still love them just as much. But I was mostly watching your face enjoying them and I can truly say you were delighted to discover them. I love the joy on your face.

Literally some of the most amazing lyrics ever put to a song. And they feel more and more relevant with each passing year.
Watch the whole concert. It's worth every second and I defy you to stop smiling through the whole thing. My face ached from grinning ear to ear. It was incredible.
Awesome band.. Great Musiccal performance.
This entire concert is amazing, every song is better than the last one, or the next one...
I played at CBGB back in 1991. I played the night that Christian laettner hit the shot against Kentucky in the NCAA tournament. Anybody remember that?
Stop Making Sense is the thing that reminds me how special life can be. Celebration of humanity. ❤️
My favorite Talking Heads song, and a brilliant performance. The bassist is a killer.
Tina Weymouth!
She learned to play bass for the band. Amazing.
She was (and still is) married to the drummer, Chris Frantz.
@@nazfrde And I think they both Tina Weymouth and Chris Franz) played on Gorillaz firsts album (although I might be wrong)
I am a huge fan of the Talking Heads, and when this video came out in the 80's I was amazed. Loved it my whole life. Such a talented band.
Masterpiece filmed event. Certainly a top 5 concert film of all time. Perfect storm of musical and visual talent from a band at their creative peak.
Well, this dates me, but I was at this concert. Incredible energy. My favorite Talking Heads album came out in 78,More Songs About Buildings and Food.
I was fortunate to have attended two of the nights they filmed this at The Pantages Theater. I was a senior in high school and had seen Talking Heads several times previously, but this particular tour was so well choreographed and the sound quality was superb! REALLY wish they would unite for more shows!
That must have been amazing live
They were a great, very original band - and the movie from with this is taken (Stop Making Sense) is one of the most well constructed and executed concert films of all time.
My dad was born in 1981 and he is 42 years young. He loves 60s,70s,80s and 90s music. We bond over it. We love this song.
Now you're making me feel old.
I'm also a 1981 baby and I grew up watching this concert film with MY dad. It's truly music to pass on through generations!
So your dad is 27 years younger than me. Thanks , I really needed that.
I was 13 or 14. Didn't get it for a long time😅😅😅😅
This was the soundtrack of my college years and it changed my taste in music. TH were all individually brilliant musicians and this concert will go down in history as one of best live performances of all time. Stop Making Sense is an experience you won’t regret 🙏🏼
We need music like this today. There’s a lot of things that sucked in the 80s but the music created a good vibe for everyone.
This performance is from what is widely considered the best live performance concert ever. It's called "Stop Making Sense"and you should definitely watch / listen to it someday
David Byrne is anabsolute genius!
I was 16 in 1983 and we saw this movie at the midnight show. Amazing and you need to watch the entire movie! Best concert movie ever .
I was 17 and the whole cinema was dancing
I always liked talking heads but when they added those funky players it took it all to another level! Great playing!!
Yes, Girlfriend Is Better might be the most iconic track from this movie. If only for the Big Suit.
Amazing female BASS Player... look up Carol Kaye.... who???
One of the GREATEST 80'S BANDS. ✌️
An amazing part of true performance art and powerful music. Ultimate performers, none can compare to their total energy
My man I just found your channel. Love it. You absolutely owe it to yourself to watchi this whole concert film, Stop Making Sense. It's filled with bangers and weirdo peformance art. Absolute classic.
Best rock movie ❤ Amazing band.
One of the all time Best concerts Ever.....
Everyone on that stage is a Legend.....
Still Rock this Jank on a Saturday nite from time to time
Any and all Talking Heads music is excellent...just keep going. You won't find anything you dont love!
This entire concert is absolutely amazing... "Stop Making Sense" musical theater
Now you're into my favorite keep on going with this concert you won't be disappointed😊❤❤❤❤
Burning Down the House is one of my faves,
You owe it to yourself to watch the entire movie "Stop Making Sense". Its one of the best concert movie's ever made.
I saw The Talking Heads in '83 in Austin. They took all the seats out of the concert hall! Everyone had to stand & dance! It was fantastic! I will never forget it!
Amazing live show. Whole thing is worth watching. Girlfriend is Better is an absolute banger in this performance.
Yes! Girlfriend is Better!!! The whole movie is great but girlfriend is better is my favorite track (they knew it too)!
Peace!
I love Tina watching at 6:30 like "what's he up to?". Proves that David's stage moves weren't all rehearsed.
Performance art at its best. The genius of David Byrne.
This song and a number of their albums are absolute classics! Such a classic live performance.
Great selection! This concert was designed to be filmed by director Johnathan Demme. It starts out w/Byrne alone on stage and slowly adds ppl, sets, instruments, etc as each song is performed. One of the great concert films of all time. Thanks Polo!
Not Ted but Jonathan Demme.
The guy who directed Silence Of The Lambs and Philadelphia.
@@сырпошехонский Yes! You are correct. TY.
One of the best recorded performances of a rock song ever . No question.
This album was my getting ready to go out soundtrack - especially Slippery People.
Love this band, this concert is so great but they have a ton of great studio tracks
One of my all time favorite bands! Watched this concert with my mom, sister, BIL and our kids. Such good fun
Saw David Byrne last year on Broadway with his American Utopia show. Man still is a great performer. If you get a chance, give it a watch.
Cheers! ❤
P.S. If you do feel the need to react to this concert. “Slippery People” is a good one.
"It sounds crazy."
Does it really?
One of my favorites to this day. Discovered them while going to Louisiana in 83. Many fun times listening to them.
This is one of those instances where the live recording beats the studio hands down. Something about the frenetic nature of the running makes it crazy good.
Talking Heads had SOO MANY GREAT songs! Truly a phenomenal band.
The whole concert was amazing.
Love the Talking Heads! David Byrne is an absolute genius. I'm thankful that I got to see them live.
One of the most entertaining bands ever. Jethro Tull would be another band that is amazing live.
Fantastic and on point reaction! 🎉
The same style is recognizable 20 years later.
wee all be on da autism spectra bruh
every last one of us stinkin hominids
Such an epic concert!!!!
Everybody giving 100% and actually having big fun.
Like children playing
David Byrne and Freddie Mercury from Queen IMHO put on the greatest stage shows ever. They are both great compsers, writers, directors and and musicians. David has this crazy ability to run around stage for 2 hrs and never miss a breath or a note while singing his artistic mind is unbelivelible. Thank you for doing this one haven't thought about them in years gonna watch the whole concert now...peace
I'm glad I was born in '72 because when I got into music , there was the 80's :) Great reaction, thank you!
One of the most underrated and underappreciated bands of all time .
You should definitely explore more from them . I recommend some lesser known but amazing songs such as Blind , Mr. Jones , or the Lady don't mind .
The hits can wait.
I knew someone would say that 😡 stop! They were never underrated. Where do you f’s come up with that. Now serious, please answer back🖕
Underrated and underappreciated by whom? They were extremely appreciated and highly rated in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, at least. Glad that UA-cam is around so that younger generations can appreciate them all over again.
@@Historian212 Ask 100 people under 45
@@Heracles_FE so i guess one day all the bands of your generation will be known as underated.
The entire recorded show is a must see! Imagine how good that sounded in that little theatre! Great reaction!
For a totally different take on the dichotomy of this song, read the lyrics. It's about the harshness of life during wartime.
Only David Byrne could take a song with such dark lyrics, and perform it with unmatched, upbeat choreography. And, it works!
That must be why the title is Life during Wartime.
@@robertirvine6307 LOL
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play"
- Talking Heads
@@civildiscourse2000 Absolutely this music is serious. But it's not just music, it's performance art. The good time party atmosphere is meant to be totally ironic. The danger is the American public aren't getting what goes on because they are too busy with their superficial lives. Polo included it seems.
Listen to the chorus of the song. "This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin around..."
i listened to them in the '80s and still love them just as much. But I was mostly watching your face enjoying them and I can truly say you were delighted to discover them. I love the joy on your face.
Try Psycho Killer next!!
