Making a Bass Guitar Case
Вставка

- We started by cutting 2.2 x 6 cm spruce slats to a length of 130 cm. All together 42 slats, 21 for each side of the case. For gluing, we used two component melamine glue from Akzo nobel with open time of 45 minutes. We use this same glue for glulam beams, Its water resistant, has great mechanical properties and has a great resistance to high heath. After gluing blanks, as I was walking trough the workshop, I noticed an old failed wall art project I did for you tube two years ago and thought it would fit perfect on the guitar case. It would certainly spruce up the project so I dug up a 3d file and the size fitted almost perfectly when scaled down to case dimensions. After milling the inner sides of both pieces, the robot milled the outer surfaces. For one side, I used 12 mm 4 flutes ball bit and for other side I used 22mm two flutes ball bit to see the difference in surface finish. 12 mm 4 flutes bit turned out to give much better surface and much less sanding was required afterwards. The sanding was a nightmare as is always with soft woods like spruce. It took us almost 8 hours with 220 grit sandpaper until we were satisfied. After sanding, I applied 3 coats of water based matte varnish with light 400 grit sanding in between coats. Insides of the case were lined with 3 cm thick egg box sponge with part of it milled to a guitar body contours to keep the guitar from moving inside the case. As adhesive, we used spray glue for sponge and other materials. At the end, corner protectors, hinges, case lock latches and handle are screwed into place. White sealing rubber D-gasket is glued to the rim of top side of the case and when closed is squeezed to down to 4 mm spacing between two sides of the case. Final weight of the case is circa 10 kg. In the future, we paln to use thermally treated larch which sands much more easily and also reduce the final thickness to bring the weight down to less than 9 kg. The whole build took us 3 days.
I really hope you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe! :D

That feeling, when you realise, that you need a case for your case to not scratch it
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“Making simple things incredibly complicated...”
Germany in all of ww2
Not as complicated as you would think actually. Also it would be significantly more difficult to do that 3d circle/ripple feature by hand.

That is beautiful but I can only imagine how heavy it is.
10kg
@@David-ls4qp You have to say it in 'Murican. It's just shy of 23 pounds, Scott.
@@fun_ghoul Exactly what 10 liters of water weigh :-)
@@David-ls4qp i think 14kg with the bass
I mean I can't imagine it weighing much more than a large china hut
Beautiful work. This video reminds me of and old, circa 1950's, cartoon that shows a toothpick factory. A log is brought in and cartoon axes reduce the entire log into one toothpick while music plays in the background.
Haha I remember that one.
As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
Love that woodworking but that has to incredibly heavy. Beautiful job.
Heavy???.... Really????.... A machine did all the work....
@@claudioolasagasti3140 the case itself must be heavy, he meant.
So
fantastic project and great video to watch... really enjoyed the outer case detail, took the case to a work of art instead of just a plain guitar case. Thank you for posting the video.
Thank you very much Jason! I'm glad you like it!
They definitely have all the tools and space to do this nice and simple.
i love your channel - it is always a pleasure to take a look at your projects. AWESOME :-)
Great job. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting them.
Glad you like them! Thank you!
One of the greatest pieces of music.
SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I LOVED IT!
Now that is one super guitar case. Love your music selection as well.
Glad you like it! Thank you very much Hansie! :)
Nice piece of work and design there guys. Well done.
Your videos say, "Pay attention, enjoy and learn if you can." Even the saw dust is art! And when it's done, you are like, "Wow! That is amazing!"
Wow, thanks Juliet! :)
I made the mistake of assuming that you must have done what most of us common folk would do and put a thin layer of black foam underneath the layer of embossed black foam, I don't know what got into me, I must have forgotten what channel I came to, this is Lignum, and here, we use robots for everything! Awesome project, a truly fine addition to this already great piece of art. You do realize that you currently still owe us two more guitars and now three more guitar cases...lol! Great job as always, can't wait to see whats next!
Yes I know! :D Next one will be a set of two guitars in one video.. and then a summer guitar project.. I'l really need more cases :D I'm glad you like this one, the foam looks great now but man.. all the trials and errors till I got it right.. At one point I almost gave up and started cutting ordinary felt..
Oooh, You did it again...! Lovely work Guys!!
Thank you Karl!
Would love a behind the scenes of setting up and programming for the CNC arms.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Very, Very impressive, congrats!
Very nice. Clever ideas to hold down and mill the foam. 3D degign on both sides of the case make it especially nice. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David
Thank you very much David! I'm glad you like the video!
Wow, that's an incredible case! I'd love one of those for my Gibson Les Paul!
I'm glad you like it James! :D
When I start selling them in a couple of months, get back to me! :D
Cool video and assume woodworking like your other projects. I had road case with that type of foam and after a while it broke down into crumbs, might consider a harder foam with a fabric covering. Love the attention to the details.
Beautiful...a peace of art...
MIND BLOWING!!! EPICO!!! WISE CHOICE!!!
Just stunning! 🤟
Awesome looking case but, Now I've seen it all!! A bass case worth more than most basses that will be stored in it!!!
Really cool case and video...I love watching your videos.
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you as always!
You guys make absolutely beautiful things. Of course it helps having the right tools (like a freaking robot). But none the less, beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful work as always! Really glad to see the bots doing some 3D contour work, hoping now that you have something big planned for the other one! Keep up the amazing work mate!
Thank you Brett! I'm working on my next guitars, and they will all need cases ;)
The video baerly started and i can already see this is going to be awesome
:D , Thanks Sekrit!
Thanks Mozart for that
Amazing man i love it ❤
Really nice. Looks like a one million dollar case. Impressive construction and machinery.
I'm not carrying this all around town. Looks good but not practical. Must weigh a ton. The foam seal is wimpy and useless in weather, it needs to be buried in the seam line of the case. The wood is goin to warp anyways. The course abrasive Foam will ruin the Guitar's finish. That's why they use fake fur. To keep the polish. These guys don't know what they're doin.
Beautiful hard case!
Good thing I gotta stop by the massive robot store this weekend.
amazing product gorgeous
Thank you very much Denis! :D
Great job, congratulations. If possible, I would like to know how the clamping system is made in the clamp that joins the wood for bonding. Thanks in advance for your attention.
Verdadeira obra de arte!!!!

Your channel never disappoints. You make the most creative projects, have very impressive filming and editing, and play awesome music. This is another very entertaining video. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you like and follow my work, it's always nice to see your comment :D
this is a very beautiful case for which another case is needed so as not to damage the beauty.
XD Thank you!
Beautiful
Yes~ That's really cool
Thank you!
A bright spot in the week...A Lignum video!
:) Thank you Chris!
I think having a curly maple top would look amazing!
Beautiful job. I would have put foam on the last two compartments though. Try making a case out of a very figured wood like curly maple or maybe cherry, walnut.
I love your work
Thank you Nicholas!
This is the most beautiful guitar/ bass hard case I've seen!
AWESOME! A lot of firsts in this video; first time I've seen a CNC used to mill foam, first time I've seen a guitar case that must weigh as much as three of the guitars its holding. When you order wood glue do they just leave the tanker truck in your parking lot?
Thanks for sharing your work. Hope you, your family, and friends are all well and safe.
You are not so far off, regarding the weight.. But next one will be less than 8 kg now when I know the concept works. I would be really happy if I had so much work that I need glue by the truck :D The foam didn't work from the first try, it took some trial and error till I got the right milling bit, speed and rpm.. thanks For Watching J T, Stay safe!
If you listen from 3.52 you can hear it reverse up the drive....🚚
Magnifique travail .....
Thank you for sharing. Look like i'll make a case (don't know what will it for :). ). Also I think it's the first time I see you use the dust extractor haha. Take care and stay safe my friend .
I'm sure that the missis would like a jewelry case :D Also stay safe and thanks for watching!
@@lignumchannel sound good my friend, a case first then save up for jewelry later haha. I'll keep you posted with the replica :)
2:39 imagine if all your problems would just gone into a ducting system just like that
A base guitar does not deserve something that awesome! :)
That is a gorgeous piece. My only gripe is with the metal corners. I'd like to see something that won't scratch or dent floors and walls.
I'm an architectural photographer and carry lots of cases into expensive homes, offices, etc. All of my cases are soft to minimize damage.
Amazing
Bellissimo!!! U are the best! Regards.
Another masterpiece.
Could you make a video about you?
I mean about your background, workshop and those freaking robot arms?
Thank you, and stay safe.
Maybe one day, I'm afraid that video would be a cringe fest.. XD
I second that. One thing we love is learning more about the people we watch. You fellas are quite interesting. A 5 minute video would do the trick.
Rekao sam ti Grga ;)
Great video, It must weigh a ton. I would love to have 2 robot arms to do my handcrafts 😜
Holy moly thats nice! Pozdrav iz Slovenije !
Hvala! Pozdrav! :D
"Where ya goin with the forklift honey?" Off to jam.
wow very nice work i love your videos
Thank you so much 😀 I'm glad you like it!
I thought this was going to be an awesome video of two guys on a budget hand building a guitars case lol. Then they break out a machine that probably costs more than my house to do all the work lol. I’m sure that’s what this channel is.. just took me by surprise
The case is great, love the design. It would be even better with a small box inside to put some strings, guitar picks, and tuning fork/device in. I like the standard classical guitar case with such a box, which makes it easy to keep your basic gear right where your guitar is. My electrical guitar case doesn't have a "box" inside and my picks and strings fly around in the case.
That's a great idea! I'm sure I can implement something like that in my next design, Thank you Peter! :D
@@lignumchannel You're welcome. ;)
Dear Santa, I know it's a little early, and my garage doesn't have nearly enough room, I'd still like a CNC machine for Christmas!
Finally! A project I can do at home 😉
Employees: i thought we build carports
Lignum boss: stfu and sand my guitar case!
😂😂😂😂
ediii89 "We build whatever the robot wants to build..."
XD yes
@@thatellipsisguy8984 No, the robots do as they're told. They're just very expensive slaves.😂
notification squad! that dust collection slo mo was very satisfying! this came out beautiful
Yeah, have to get a decent slomo camera instead of cellphone XD The shop is full of possible shots.. :D
@@lignumchannel can't wait!
Eye love it 🤘🏽🕶️💜
Beautiful Work. Definitly unique. It would be amazing If the unused compartments would be turned into usable space, f.e. for cables, iPad, notepad, pens, possibly a couple of Pedals and other little bits and bobs. Maybe a little bit more coushioning for the neck. Staining the Wood darker personaly would Look awesome. Just a few thoughts. Great Job Guys...wow the possibilities!
Only distraction me thinks was the Audio you Guys chose..too intense and dramatic ...(nothing against Classic greats 😉)..
Keep em coming
Chapeau !!!
😱. . . Muito lindo!
looks like the handle could be positioned better for balance. aside from that, gorgeous build! you should try making one out of carbon fiber and use the robots to carve the mould.
Nice!
Superb!
Thanks a lot Bruno! :)
Although i admire your case most of us poor mortals do not have such complex machines like you do , the case is probably worth more than my guitar 😂😂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Very nice. Heavy? I'm glad you are back to Classical music.
:D this prototype is round 10 kg but next one I hope to get down to 8 or even less.. Glad you like it!
¡Excelente!
INSANE!!!!
I am a fan of your creativity Plastic artist and designer from Libya and I have a lot of ideas, but unfortunately I do not have machines
Hahaha
I wish you good luck
Than you, I wish you all the luck too!
That’s how I want my coffin to look. But deeper of course.
The moment Danse Macabre begun you earned my instalike
Saint-Saëns
Looks awesome, I'd probably remove some foam from the top piece where the head stock is so it's not putting downward pressure on it. Probably wouldn't snap it off, but why take the risk? The guitar is sufficiently held down even without it.
LMAO
espectacular.
I think this is completely neat. Ive got no comments. Theses dudes work with wood and make instruments. What did you expect? Them not to craft a w o o d case if they can? By the way, amazing design.
Man your work is amazing! Who's your integrator if I may ask?
What was that spray glue for sponge? It comes out in nice wide line. Much nicer than Bizon spray glue we use...
Cool. A basis for making a custom case for my M-21 sniper rifle.
🤔hmm
That's some major trust in the properties of hot glue there. 😂😜
Hot glue is the best! ;)
There may be a way to make a heavier, more prone to warping guitar case - but we haven't found it yet.
Шикарный футляр!!!
I wish y'all would do a Heavy Metal Guitar or Bass Guitar
What a beautiful piece, but isn't it very heavy?
It's circa 10 kg. Now when I see how heavy duty this one is, i'm sure that I can reduce weight by 20 percent just by reducing unnecessary wood thickness.
lignum do you have concern for warping when you mill down a laminated block?
No warping at all with laminated wood
Perfecto!
Muy bonito y todo peeeero !cargalo!
Do you think you could also reduce the weight by using a less dense wood like basswood?
Muy lindo .
Pregunta solo el estuche cuaanto quedo pesando kilogramos ?
Nicely done ... but,...(a suggestion for all woodworking video posters), stop adding background music (well, maybe just reduce the volume)!! Shop noise is sufficient and much better!
Next video: We build a case to put this pretty one in (you know how roadies are)!!
