    I'm making a case as of right now! I was inspired by this video. Although, rather than using fur and that type of foam, I'm using a foam made for firearm cases which I've found to work just great. I'm also going to leave the wood exposed to show off it's grain. Awesome video though, keep up the great work!

    Great build, Chris. It's a great design and not too difficult for most DIYers to make. I like the idea of the roll-on finish instead of covering with vinyl or Tolex. I believe that is the same or similar product that Peavey used (or still uses) on their cabinets. Back in the day I had some SP-3s that had a rubberized coating like that.

    As with any natural materials... I suppose the finished weight depends on the weight of the frame wood. Because luan stays pretty much consistent.
    My guitars are more like 16" ×. 41". Being a ML style. So. Weight is always a concern

    Hello! I love your videos, but I have to be the Resident Safety Sally here!
    You demonstrated good technique in standing sideways and not being in-line with the path of the workpiece, but when performing a box lid opening operation on the table saw, you have to be very careful when applying lateral side pressure against the blade, such as you were at the 4:30 mark with the square. You are effectively running a very high risk of pinching the blade between the wood, which is 100% a recipe for kickback. Underpowered saws will cause burning and/or stall out, but anything with a bit of oomph will send that piece of lumber back in a direction you would rather it not be.
    While you certainly can cut the lid of the box in a single pass, I would suggest a safer method: Do not make a full depth pass. Instead, make a partial cut to establish your lid/kerf line. Leave a thin strip of support material that keeps the entire box intact. Then you can take any handsaw of your choice (flush cut, or Japanese pull saws are my preferred type) and finish the cut. Then finish the remaining cleanup with your preferred method of choice; block plane, sandpaper, trim router, etc. While it is a little more cleanup work, you get your sharp line established by your table saw, but without the potential of your large unwieldy box suddenly turning into an unexpected projectile.
    You can also have a bit of shim stock the same width as your saw kerf if you decide to go the full cut method, but I think that simply keeping the box more-or-less intact for the initial pass is a little more intuitive. Other than that, I love the content on a subject that is not really shown on UA-cam!

    I built an electric octave mandolin about 5 years ago. Yeah, it needed a sturdy case, so I looked up on Utube to see what other folks were doing. I went to the lumber supply & the fabric store at the mall and the sweet little lady running her shift in the cloth department saw that I was about to make her day by doing something cooler than her normal customers would be doing and bent over backwards to help me out. The mando is called the Blue Rose, and when I showed her the mando and case, it must have knocked her socks off. She came to want to help me like I was her long lost cousin. Anyway, she gave me tips on cutting the fabric and tips of the kind of folds & of adhesive to use to get it to stick for the life of the case, which, I hope, will be 100 years after I'm long taking my dirt nap. The hardware is first quality all around and the instrument could be dropped from the Empire State building with no damage.... That's good enough for me and those that come after. The whole thing weighs around 25 pounds. Around as much as your Teley or Strat in a decent custom case. Life is good. Bob

    I made a similar case the same way about 40 years ago. I called it Ben's Folley. I used #4 countersunk screws insteas of brads because brads do not support tension loads at all. It worked fine. It weighed a ton. Brutally heavy. I carried my Ibanez solid body in it 2.5 miles almost every day to conservatory. What a fool. Finally, I packed up a guitar that I sold in it.

I might support my next house-building with the two older ones. Or perhaps create car-jack runways. ha ha... I am looking for a titanium tree - strong. light but also easier to cut without lasers.

  • @johncalkin7423
    @johncalkin7423 2 роки тому +13

    Nice! Great job. Guitarists usually slide their guitars in and out of vehicles. The raised screws can catch and rip off the case. Glue on the threads will help prevent this, as would flat head screws. I gave up using rubber feet on the back edge for the same reason---they ripped right off even with glue on the screws. A piano hinge makes a nice touch, too.

    • @Salador1777
      @Salador1777 3 місяці тому

      Ya look at a freedom case skb those things are just flat the only foot like things are on the hinge edge. Only thing to get caught is the handle never had that happen.
      90* hinges might be cool but the might fail. The strap is annoying, it detached on my case the lid opens flat. But I think if the strap fails the hinges fail too and if they break the case might not a case anymore. Either way the way he built it is very nice and i can tell it's high quality for sure.
      Thank you for the video man excellent

    • @Salador1777
      @Salador1777 3 місяці тому

      Did you have nice screws or regular screws? I feel like nicer screws are finished and hence less likely to catch on stuff. Even the finish matters. The rubber feet are there more so you don't end up scratching the floor at a venue or like... Well a floor or table really, because usually the floor will have some tiny grit and sliding a heavy case around scratches a bunch. I think. What else did the feet do? If u knock over your beer it doesn't wick all over the case and then pick it up 3 days later and it stinks and has a stain on it to clean. Lol never done that but I can see it in my minds eye now. The equipment needs to be musician safe and not susceptible to spilled beer. Also the feet might help if it rocks

    4:28 - Please don't do that anymore. That box is way to bulky and thin to be safely cut open on a table saw, especially when placed on the shorter edge. This is exactly the threshold for switching from "bring an object to the tool" to "bring the tool to an object" approach - use a circular saw with a rip fence next time. You got away this time, but you are asking for a table saw accident.

    • @HighlineGuitars
      @HighlineGuitars  2 роки тому +1

      I don't know what kind of solvents are in the Gorilla spray glue I used, but when it's wet, it does melt the extruded polystyrene foam. Once it tacks up, the melting stops, so it doesn't do much damage. It just makes the surface kind of bumpy. There are other glues you can use that won't melt the foam, but I haven't felt the need to try them.

Also if I don't have one of those cutting machines for the guitar foam fitting should I just trace out a template and and cut it by hand? You might of said, I'm watching this at work.

    I've been planning a case, and had a plan about 90% the same. I was going to use pocket screws (and glue) to secure the ends, not brads. I was planning to use Tolex, but the roll on material would be much easier. I was not planning to use rigid form, but might reconsider. Using a softer foam would allow for some movement, which I would counter with a cross piece to cradle the neck. FYI, I am building for a bass, and many of my ideas come from the Fender case that came with my 1977 P-bass.

    • @daniellarson3068
      @daniellarson3068 2 роки тому +2

    Some people take pride in their work and use dovetail or boxed joints. Others use weak butt joints with titebond 1 and brads. Btw table saw blades hate cutting through steel brads!

    • @HighlineGuitars
      @HighlineGuitars  2 роки тому

      Some people overthink their projects because they don't know how basic engineering works. They also incorrectly assume the table saw cut through the steel brads. It didn't because the brads weren't long enough.

    42' minus 3/4" twice isn't 41' that's why there's a gap at the ends of your plywood.

    Custom case just for custom's sake? at 39", its a traditional sized build. Strat sized hard cases currently start at $63 on Ebay. Something similar to what you made starts at about $70. You spent $115, plus time you could be building another guitar - for what exactly? I was considering this issue myself just yesterday with respect to my experimental builds that typically measure 39 long x 5 wide x 4 thick. For a build that small, a custom case might be a cost effective alternative. Some sort of plastic box and acoustic foam might be a viable alternative as well, but perhaps not appropriate for a traditional build. For my experimental builds, I'm trying hard shell plastic rifle cases, starting at about $25 on Ebay. I was unable to find similar plastic cases online in traditional guitar widths at reasonable prices. Personally, I'd outsource generic cases, add my logo, and spend the time saved on more killer fretwork - or perhaps watching UA-cam videos, and spend the money saved on parts for the next build - or perhaps beer. Now if you stained and clear coated it instead of doing the bed liner thing... THAT would be special. Just a bit of constructive criticism - keep up the good work.

      I spent $150. You cost may vary as the price of lumber varies.

    How much bigger than the guitar body was the pocket cut out of the foam?

      It was enlarged by the radius of the pen I used to trace the body’s shape.

    Some glues melt foamboard over time. You may have used the wrong glue.

    Excellent tutorial. Thanks! I carry my Tele in a gradually crumbling 1968 Baldwin [UK] case that's held up longer than it ought and I could (almost) do this.

    Kinda big heads on these corner screws. Enought to scratch any surface with it. Better to use rivets there.

      99% of the world's population doesn't have a rivet gun or access to one. It's sad, but true. In fact, where I live you need to take a course and pass a test to be certified before you can operate a rivet gun. I have a 9mm handgun, which was much easier to get than a rivet gun. Such is life in America.
