If I should die tomorrow, I will have listened to the greatest jazz fusion bands in the history of music after I listen to Steps Ahead and Weather Report! Nothing will ever match these sounds! I will die a happy man! Nothing more to say!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love that tune. My percussion prof in college back then transcribed Mainieri's vibe solo in Beirut and I remember learning it note for note. Good times. That same year Brecker did a clinic at a nearby community college, and we were all totally floored by the whole EWI thing. Steve Smith did a clinic later that year and I helped him schlep his Sonors around. They were both super nice guys and totally approachable.
One of the best band ever in all genres, miles davis and mike with michael had and shared same group at that times , in 1985 also the 1st Sting , these ewi and vibraphone solos are one of the best performances in human history , memorable times and players
Smith is sick!!! Michael is at peace but there's no way he's resting. He's eternally jamming! :) The jam during Mike's solo is about 90 seconds of absolute peak performance!! WOW!
Daryl Jones? 🤤🤤 To think that this bass player would actually join the Rolling Stones some years later... Daryl Jones was awesome with Miles Davis too. Steve Smith is solid as always, such a great drummer! That album he recorded with Vertu guitarist Richie Kotzen was really awesome too and deserves more attention.
Mike M. Kicks so much ass in that solo. Love how the synth triggered by the vibraphone gives the sound more definition.. My favorite fusion band! Thanks for being such an inspiration to you all - especially Mike Brecker..
So much genius in one band!!! Still amazes me to this day. It floors me that Mainieri started his career in 1952; the year I was born. And he played every kind of music. And this is the epitome of how hip and relevant at the time this video was recorded and it it still holds up as eternally young. Is he still performing?
Mike's solo was almighty in this, but remember the whole rest of the band was equally amazing. And in fact, this was Mike Manieri's band, and here he shows us why, with such and untouchable solo.
All three drummers that they’ve had Smith get an Erskine have all been great all different from each other but added in their unique styles to the band.
Today was the day of the Beirut twin explosion. It happened hours ago and I was listening to this song. I've heard this tune was inspired by the violence that goes on in Beirut. I hope those affected make a recovery.
This Live in Tokio concert is the absolutely best available concert. Who ever has uploaded this fantastic concert ! Could you please upload the rest of it ?? I think this is a must and a peak concert for all Steps Ahead music fans. Thanks in advance
Fantastic stratospheric stuff. To paraphrase Pat Methany, "one of the worst positions to be in the jazz world is being the next soloist after Michael Brecker", but I really tip my hat to Mike Mainieri, he more than holds his own here and elsewhere with Steps Ahead. Also have to say they create one of my fav all-time grooves here, too.
OFF THE BEST FUSION ALBUM OF THE LOT......MAGNETIC THE WHOLE SET JUST BLISTERS............... THE BEST AND ONLY LINE UP THAT WARRANTS ...STEPS AHEAD......... AND LIVE LIKE THIS..WELL
There is no higher level of musicianship than this performance 😱

מה יש לומר שלא נאמר על ההרכב האלוהי הזה.............אני מתפקע מנחת כל פעם שאני שומע את האוסף הנפלא של הנגנים האלהואיך הם מנגנים יחד!!!!!!
This lineup of Steps Ahead are absolutely on fire and all unbelievable players in their own right.
One of the best band ever in all genres, miles davis and mike with michael had and shared same group at that times , in 1985 also the 1st Sting , these ewi and vibraphone solos are one of the best performances in human history , memorable times and players
Smith is sick!!!

And in fact, this was Mike Manieri's band, and here he shows us why, with such and untouchable solo.

oh ouaw ,le regrete michael brecker , fou c'est fou ce groupe .merci
Today was the day of the Beirut twin explosion. It happened hours ago and I was listening to this song. I've heard this tune was inspired by the violence that goes on in Beirut. I hope those affected make a recovery.
The video is from 1986, so it has nothing to do with the recent violence in Beirut.
I agree with all! Really miss MB!!!! Hes in heaven jamming with Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, Jaco P, :)
YOU KNOW HE IS! RIP all musicians who inspire us daily.

Had the exact same reaction - there is nothing like this track
It reminds me of Magma
Tout simplement de Grands Musiciens
love the bridge.
いや~初めて聴いた(観た)ときの衝撃が忘れられません。マイケル、こんな電子楽器でもこれほどまでにアウトできるものか!と。それまで聴いてきた日本人のEWI奏者がまるで子供に思えました。
Excellent.
It's like the EWI invented for this
ewi was invented for brecker period
Exactly 💯
