I was there..... The best concert I've ever seen in my life live. After the concert, half the audience remained seated with open eyes and mouth in shock. It was really amazing lineup.
Definitely agree. On Mike Stern studio albums, he plays like a groove oriented studio guy. Live, he’s completely on fire. Just like Stern. He’s a great soloist as well. Check out this bands version of Straight No Chaser on UA-cam. Ridiculously good phrasing and technique. Jeff Andrews is a monster
Yup. If I remember correctly he's on my favorite recorded Stern tune from the Brecker album Don't Try This At Home. The tune is Suspone and is basically this band I think. Andrews plays this pedal thing through Calderazzo's first through the form that really just makes it. Always loved that. Great stuff.
Mike Stern sure can tear it up. Few genuine jazz guitarists have his rock feel. I saw him a few years earlier with Miles Davis doubling with John Scofield. I didn't need a haircut that month!
Jeff Andrews always had one of my favorite Fender tones. Tremendous player. And this lineup was just scary good. I had the good fortune of seeing him play a few times in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. He was always RIGHT THERE with his incredible pocket. I wish more people knew of him.
If anything is said about a Tele is that it can do anything. Also, he uses a Seymour Duncan humbucker as his neck pickup (what he uses for almost everything, certainly this solo), not really Tele. :)
He’s known as a jazz player but I think his pocket is beautiful. He never gets credit for it. He does some amazing pocket grooves on some of Mike Brecker’s solo albums.
I remember when Stern's Upside album came out. I was studying guitar in L.A. and my teacher Adam Levine (no not that one!) had a whole class where we listened to this and studied it. One of my faves to this day!
Incredible solo by Brecker sounds like Holdsworth synthaxe, amazing. Jeff Andrews a real beast reminds me of Jaco, and Hulk on guitar also great, nice track.
Since I was a kid I've always loved music. Never could choose which horns I liked hearing the most between Sax & Trumpet. Even with Dizzy & Bird, Coltrane & Miles & Randy Brecker. Then I started to listen to Michael Brecker. His incredible gift was missed in Heaven. Now its back there. That guy was Special. R.I.P. Mike
Saw Mike perform in Quebec City in 1981 on a 12ft x 12ft stage. I just dropped in to have drink (a bar) and had no idea I was going to be treated to such mastery on the guitar.
I saw this band in 1987. When Miles Davis talked about creating the best MF'ing rock band ever, he was talking about this group. They would start off with a standard jazz type head and just tear it apart.
I saw them numerous times between 1987 and 1989. Each performance was mind blowing. I also saw the group immediately before this, which had Omar Hakim on drums and Kenny Kirkland on piano.
I had never heard of Mike Stern until one day , I walked into the jazz dept of the newly opened Tower records in Piccadilly Circus, London & this was playing....needless to say it was my first of many purchases of Mike Stern albums👍
Apart from the obvious props to the frontmen, the drummer and bassist are grooving like crazy. Such a pleasure to listen to. The video editing gave me epilepsy a couple of times though.
Michael Brecker, he always had the best notes, him and his brother had a way of phrasing and Michael is one of those talents if you were lucky enough to have heard him play when he was alive makes you crave for more of this., There will never be another Michael Brecker. Sadly, but we can thank God for having been blessed with hearing his genius. Jazz in Heaven?, you bet there is!!
I was lucky enough to see this band five times, as well as an earlier version with Omar Hakim on drums. It was the most intense performances I have ever seen. Everyone was a monster.
a lot of the good jazzers are unlikely candidates for heaven, that’s why the narrative is BS, how could it be heaven if some of my best buddies and idols will not be there?

Outta Sight Man!!!! Just blasted my brain....... Love This!!!!!
Who is more underrated? Michael Brecker or Mike Stern? What awesome musicians! The tracking on one of the first 1987 MIDI wind controller's must have sucked but Michael made it sound flawless! I saw this live in Ann Arbor MI 1987! Peace from Detroit MI.
Saw Brecker in Phila. several years ago and it was , I believe the first tour / introduction of the EWI.....I recall the highs pierced my eardrums bordering on discomfort and the lows were vibrating my ribcage more than any electric bassist I'd ever seen....haha still loved it ! But put a woodwind in this man's hands and he was dangerous....He left us alot of excellent material but just like all the greats , I miss what could have been.
I have been there that evening and it has incredibly good concert, starting well after midnight, as Sun Ra Arkestra playing before them extended their performance quite a lot. In spite of that no one felt tired, it has been really exciting night, ending after 3AM Monday morning. All guys were just perfect.
Mike was in Kristiansand, Norway a few year ago, and played in a small venue. Met him. The thing is, that before the gig, in between the gig and after; he was playing/practising. So, like he says himself; he´s practicing all the time :)
It's spectacular that we live in a universe in which this could exist.
arthurthegreat yeah
no doubt

👍How awesome! What an experience that must've been!!
Which year?
@@ewaremusica 1987. Mike Stern was dressed all in black, Jaco died three weeks before.
I can imagine your recollection is completely true. This lineup is unbelievable.
Jeff Andrews one of the most underrated bassists ever..

We agree!!!!
And RIP Jeff Andrews. So sad
JEFF IS FILTHYYYYYY ON THIS TRACK, I AM SCREAMING
Mike Stern sure can tear it up. Few genuine jazz guitarists have his rock feel. I saw him a few years earlier with Miles Davis doubling with John Scofield. I didn't need a haircut that month!
I can't say I'm a big fan of Stern's playing, but that Jean Pierre... Scary!
Michael Brecker!!! The man blessed us with his gift. Fire, skill, beauty and heart. Every time I hear that solo I am overwhelmed.
It's good to be alive. 2025 and I'm listening this for the first time. Mike Stern's influence is unmeasurable!
One of my favorites Mike Stern's Tune, He is Killer Composer! Great Guitarist
I like how he turned what was termed a rhythm or country guitar (Fender Telecaster) into a rock machine. Nice lead work there.
If anything is said about a Tele is that it can do anything. Also, he uses a Seymour Duncan humbucker as his neck pickup (what he uses for almost everything, certainly this solo), not really Tele. :)
+Brazen NL Yes indeed!
@@BrazenNL you can even play metal with telecaster!
There has not been another player of EWI and sax like Michael Brecker.
Ewi maybe, but sax : Bob Berg
Sin respuesta,demasiado buenos!!!!
@@grahamgreene1158 couldn’t agree more graham
JEFF ANDREWS!!!
My favorite bass player!
What a band. And Mike Stern is BURNING
Cannot forget about Adam Nussbaum drumming. It’s so in the pocket
One of my very favorite jazz drummers Alex B. Totally agree with your comment .
He’s known as a jazz player but I think his pocket is beautiful. He never gets credit for it. He does some amazing pocket grooves on some of Mike Brecker’s solo albums.
The absolute peak of greatness! RIP Michael Brecker!!
R.I.P Jeff Andrews. A great bass player. Not forgotten !!!
Brecker was a complete and total bad ass...
I remember when Stern's Upside album came out. I was studying guitar in L.A. and my teacher Adam Levine (no not that one!) had a whole class where we listened to this and studied it. One of my faves to this day!
The bass player's awesome! Evoking the spirit of Jaco!👍
Incredible solo by Brecker sounds like Holdsworth synthaxe, amazing. Jeff Andrews a real beast reminds me of Jaco, and Hulk on guitar also great, nice track.
Yes I thought it was like holdsworth...he really worked that thing !!
Never seen Brecker shred harder, also my first time hearing him on an EWI. Chills during his solo!!!

You've been Breckered!!!!
and then his glasses almost fell off! wow
Mike always With a smile 😀
Post Miles; Yes. Before he was a tortured soul it seems... :-)
Watching Mike Stern just fucking go for it is one of the great joys in life.
Jeff Andrews on bass carries that groove very well, I love it
Saw Mike perform in Quebec City in 1981 on a 12ft x 12ft stage. I just dropped in to have drink (a bar) and had no idea I was going to be treated to such mastery on the guitar.
Jaw dropping bass playing... RIP Jeff!
5 people are unable to recognise immense talent...
5 per year ;) Or maybe 1 hater made 30 accounts?
Stern is SMOKIN’ !
amazing

Mike Stern particularly amazes me with his innate like musicality which definitely shows in this composition.
Stern hasn't aged in 30+ years
Can you believe he's in his seventies now?
I had never heard of Mike Stern until one day , I walked into the jazz dept of the newly opened Tower records in Piccadilly Circus, London & this was playing....needless to say it was my first of many purchases of Mike Stern albums👍

One of my favorite heads to sing along with.

Just too much to comprehend…
Adam Nussbaum!

A whole different use of a Tele than what I knew at the time. I saw this band in Atlanta ,Wow!
Steve Khan was a another fusion guy known for Tele.
The greatest rocker on the sax and the EWI ever (not to mention the rest of his playing in general)...
And a great Mike Stern tune!
Mike Stern ferocious
Great band! R.I.P. Michael and Jeff ❤
Love it! Love it! Love it!

One of the greatest ever synth-solos turns out to be played on an electric sax-thing. I love the bass playing as well.
Poisonous and heart stopping.
This is a fantastic performance! Mike Stern. Wowww.
Brecker is one of a kind, just fantastic.World top Sax player. all musisian top of the top
A master piece, It should be renamed Dopamine.
Love this. Such amazing musicians!
i saw them in the new morning Paris , amazing wonderful fantastique merveilleux la complicité entre mike et michael , le plaisir de jouer ensemble

Omg. I wanted to see my Buddy Adam on drums, then Mike’s EwI solo made my head explode!!
Very tight band, lucky enough to see the US tour around this time.
That was sick. Wow.
This is really what makes America GREAT...
Mind blowing
OMG Mike wearing BLUE pants!
Chris Marxen..... Wow rare one that blue... Mike only wears black... He told me he doesn't own any clothes other than black....
great stuff, Michael is on fire...:)
Which one?
Incredible 🔥
What a great performance of this tune. Thanks for posting it!

Everything Brecker ever did in his sadly too short life is worth hearing. Every single note.
So good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wowww a monster...Michael brecker a Genius. Her play play in the style of mike stern or jazzrock...monster
I remember seeing this show @ The old IMAC in huntington Pretty amazing
This is by far one of my favorite videos on UA-cam...just freaking amazing

This is the kind of music they ought to play at coffee houses. After all, it almost sounds caffeinated.
Great tune
OMG what a jam
Love the weather report vibe at the end
where the chords seem to resolve and are happy together...music geeks??
@piliage LOL! I love your analogy! He was awesome. I was lucky enough to see this band live back in 87!
Totally wild stuff, brilliants solos
absolute legends!!
Man I wish Brecker could have stuck around a while longer! What a monster! Would have loved to hear and see him play with Hiromi!
So fucking bad ass!!!!!!
Un solo di EWI pazzesco. Era avanti anni luce,
from mike stern's second Album・・・my favorite tune !
That's awesome that you got a chance to witness something that great!
Mike Stern is the coolest man on earth
yes Michael and Mike so good
Sick!!!!!
Saw this line-up at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Insane.
OMG
4:23 very visceral phrasing. great solo.
GOD Bless You 🎸🎸🎸
Incredible cut. Wish the EWI didn't sound like a second guitar solo. Someone mentioned in comments that Jeff Andrews passed? So sorry to hear that.
Great Stern
I thought this was kinda cheesy at first, then those chord changes at 1:04 happened 🤯
F*ck! There You go Sir M Brecker. What a solo ❤
@elsegno It's on Stern's Upside Downside cd with Brecker on sax.
RIP Michael Brecker and Jeff Andrews
Brecker like a tiger in the wild.Amazing.
Terrific EWI solo 😱😱😱
Now we know: Michael Brecker also influenced the Djs from the 90s😉
How that's' possible!!
OMG!!! mike and mike!
