Can't argue with you on that one. It's one of my most favorite solos that Mike ever played, the pacing and the intensity that builds...it's off the charts. at one point, even Eddie Gomez kind of laughs like "wow". Mike was totally in the zone once he got rolling. Some real interesting chromatic tones and note choices in there.

I saw Steps in San Antonio 1983 when I was a senior in H.S. and about to leave to University of North Texas. I had been a Brecker fan for a couple years already and followed him until his death. This period in his playing was the most technically proficient time ever in his evolution as a musician. That night I recorded Steps and when they played this song (Pools) Brecker's solo was so perfect and climactic I listened to that tape until it wore out. The solo was longer than this one and started much like this one, but the final choruses that he played were just from another world! I have never heard a better solo in my life! That grey Members Only jacket must have been his fav because he wore it that night and he wore it when I went to his lecture at UNT and it's in this video too! Lol. I think he was playing on a Dukoff mouthpiece and I really liked the way it sounded, but he changed to Guardala mouthpiece later and his sound got rougher IMHO. I'm not sure I'm accurate with the mouthpieces though

Was at UMass in the mid 80's when Mike came and did a Masterclass. It was surreal hearing that tone sitting a few feet away in a classroom. Even more surreal hearing him play that night with our Jazz Ensemble and then chill out over beers at a friends apartment afterward. A very memorable experience as he was literally my idol at the time.

I'm not a sax player - but this live performance just shows who he was, and his impact on music.
So many sax players are now being labelled, unjustly in 20% of cases, as "Brecker clones".
    That's the impact he had.
He was the James Bond of saxophone - sax players wanted to be like him, and other musicians wanted to be with him.
