It was recorded July-September of 1969, and Michael turned 11 on August 29, 1969. So we're hearing a 10-11 year old belt out those amazing vocals. Thank you so much for these videos!

Honestly I don't think there will ever a better kid singer than Michael was. Dude was insanely talented

Freddie Perren and Fonzie Mitchell were on piano Who wrote the song and were members of what would be called the corporation at Motown. The song was originally intended for Gladys Knight and The Pips

I read that the song was originally written for Jackie Wilson (before he founded Motown, Berry Gordy was a songwriter for Wilson).
I also read that the reason Jermaine was singing in such a high register, almost to the point of his voice breaking, was that the song was arranged in Michael's key.

Stevie Wonder was related to the Jacksons. MJ started singing at 5 and soon turned 6.That was Tito beatboxing

I'm laughing at your guesses. Jermaine is the main secondary singer. Jackie sings the falsetto. Tito sings the low parts.

Musicians are Louis Shelton on lead guitar, David T. Walker on rhythm guitar, Wilton Felder on bass, Don Peake plays the guitar that doubles the bassline, Gene Pello is the drummer, keyboard/piano parts are played by Clarence McDonald and Joe Sample, and while the conga player has never been identified, it *is* known that the tambourine player is Sandra Crouch. According to an interview with Don Peake (who played the guitar that doubles the bassline), Freddie Perren wrote out the arrangements.

I hope y'all check out Torture by The Jacksons. It's an amazing song from 84 and one of the only songs to have all 6 brothers. Sounds like it could've been on Thriller. It's a great duet between Michael and Jermaine that was produced by Jackie.

Strings were pretty common at the time, all through 70s disco, and Michael's Off the Wall LP 80s. Not to diminish their contribution, but they do sound awesome!!

I was just turning 13 years old in October 69, when l first heard this song. I’m still amazed every time l hear it. It took me a while to figure out who was singing that song. I first saw them perform the song on the Andy Williams Show on Saturday night 01/31/70.

Yes, it is True that is me David T. Walker playing the licks or lead on the left channel on the song “I Want You Back". I enter in the fifth bar of the song!
Don Peake is doubling the bass line and Louie Shelton is playing the rhythm guitar.
I also perfomed on many J5 songs ...
Thank You for being interested in this music,

Tito, Jermaine and the keyboard player Ronnie Rancifer had to learn the song by the time they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show Dec 14, 1969. They did a recorded lip syncing of the song on The Hollywood Palace Show in Oct 18 1969. It was performed again live on American Bandstand on Feb 21, 1970.

Wilton Felder on bass is correct, don't forget Joe Sample also from the Jazz Crusaders on piano. Thanks guys for blowing my mind once again, all the little (flaws) and (imperfections) are the intangibles that make this stuff uncopyable. Sadly, no Micheal, no Jackson 5, talk about THE MONEY!
I never knew Willey was a State Champion Air Piano Plater!!! Never stop doing this show!!!!

This is going to sound weird, but I'm getting a barbershop feel listening to the isolated parts. Not just from the vocals, but it's like they are doing barbershop with the instruments too the way they interact with eachother - with some extra layers there too, like the strings almost sounds like they are from a 70's intro to a tv show.
