The chest being compressed the whole review was figuratively killing me. Also brown tier is pretty damn harsh for a kit that not only looks great, but crucially it also FEELS great. These MGs almost feel like action figures once assembled. The ABS frame and screws basically have you building a toy, and for all the limits to articulation the thing ain’t never coming apart. There’s a lot of merit to that quality that modern kits, which are almost strictly display pieces, just don’t have.
I am always surprised how STURDY they feel when I picked one up for the first time. These are the cream of the crop for two decades ago kits, sad to see it get a brown :(
As someone who owns this kit, I'm shocked he gave it a brown tier. The thing despite its age is sturdy, you can get it in some decent poses and it provides everything you need for the Shining Gundam just about. For a kit almost 20 years old, I recommend it to anyone wanting an older MG kit. It was an easy build, but is still fairly solid.
Mecha is biased towards older kits. It's difficult to be objective to consider things as they were when they came out instead of up against newer technologies.
I own the mg god gundam, came before this kit by a few months if I recall, and its a really nice kit for its time and holds up today. I would honestly give the god gundam bronze since its good if you put effort into it

There’s 2 things you didn’t note in this review: 1: the center of the chest (the part the green gem is attached to) was pushed in for the entire review- this isn’t supposed to be the case, it’s a gimmick that can be used to bring the arms farther across the chest. 2: for the super mode transformation, the toe is supposed to extend forward.
@@kamarulbahari152 yes, i find that gimmick tends to push inward particularly easily on my mg spiegel and is a pain on the but to pull back out, it’s not nearly as bad on the mg god gundam thought, it does indeed help for making crossed arm poses easier thats for sure, just wish there was a way to lock in place so you don’t push it inward accidentally when you don’t want to.

Well, not quite destroyed but it was in pretty bad shape. Only actual damage, aside from general dings and scuffs, was the Master's arm goring it through the stomach.

It's cool that Bandai is still producing older kits from the late 90s and early 00s. My favorite childhood toys were unfortunately discontinued a long time ago, so I could only hope for reissues. Which did happen recently, hasbro will be releasing reissues of the original transformers beast wars figures.
MG God Gundam and Shining Gundam are awesome kits during their time. I think it is unfair to rate old MG kits especially the ones that greatly influenced the development of newer MG to present standards.
At least the old 1/144 ungraded kits got some "2.0" relief in the form of those HGFC kits. (Not sure if they all got the High Grade treatment, though, and I KNOW they haven't finished the HGAC Gundam Wing (TV design) kits yet)
Id love it if they would make G Gundam 2.0 kits with anime like proportions and really good articulation. But im afraid katoki would get his hands on them and give them tiny long arms and legs and far far far to many dumb little changes.

They let him loose on the wing kits and he made them pencil arm noodle leg weak little things with tiny heads. I dont know why he decided he would make everything he touches look like a little girl and why he think that looks cool. But i personally hate it. And if someone up there is reeling him in im thankful for them. I really wish other mechanical designers would get more opportunities

@@thalidomide01 I wasn't around when G Gundam came out but heard from several gundam YT'ers that it was hated for being different from previous series. Which makes sense given the fact that G Gundam is centered around a world tournament and in somewhat peaceful times where as the UC timeline takes place during war and have very dark themes. G Gundam still has Gundam themes in them and it's still centered around war. The soul reason for there to be a Gundam fight tournament is to prevent war and some of the "participants" were forced to join. In the end, G Gundam was hated back then but loved and appreciated now. However, it's not as well loved as Gundam wing which frustrates me because wing is completely overrated. I understand why fans love it as it introduced Gundam to many fans. Still, we should look back at G Gundam and appreciate it even more, perhaps, even more than wing but not as appreciated as the UC timeline.

In fact, it revamped the gundam franchise for having to divert from the uc timeline and incorporating some super power concept in the franchise. And because of g gundam, other time lines like wing, x, turn a etc. came into existence.

I remember building this kit (twice actually 😅) when it first came out, blew my mind what it could do.... and have to admit mine has felt up well for being built almost 20 years ago 😊 And on a side note... you had the chest collapsed for the entire review 😂
Agreed! When I was building the MG God Gundam, I didn't want it to end. It was such a joy for 2002. But after two decades, I can understand why Mecha would rate it as he had. Definitely hope G Gundam can get more MGs in the future!
Love your videos Mecha but I think with these older kits it is unfair to rate them so harshly or to even compare them to newer kits. Gunpla is unlike traditional models, you don't really have to sand, cement, and paint unless you want to which is great for people just getting into the hobby. However, a lot of older kits are made like older models, they expect you to put in extra effort and all of these old kits can be good if you do. I've seen people make old MGs look fantastic, so it is unfair to rate them solely on how they look out of the box when they are a perfect canvas for custom work.
for me it was lost at the master gundam review, like put time into these older kits and they are pretty good (coming from someone with the gp01fb, god gundam and ground gundam in my collection)

I personally think this kid still holds up pretty decently. Maybe I will give it a silver tear. I feel like the plastic on mine is pretty strong and doesn’t feel like it might break anytime soon. And in mine is pretty solid and doesn’t feel loose. So I think the good kid. Far from perfect obviously.
@@trougas The rubber parts are OK. I do like that I can use slide and the beans instead in the hands instead of just separate the part to put it in. One of my favorite part about the older kids were the rubber V fins. Back when I first built model kits, I sometimes always break the v fin but for the shining Gundam I don’t have to worry about breaking it since rubber.
I just finished building this thing yesterday. I wasn't too disappointed because I knew what I was getting into with a Hella old kit. I ended up customizing quite a bit and gave it a physical sword because beam sabers are all it has next to the head vulcans.
These old school kits were “snap together” and “no need to paint” in the loosest of senses. Color separation was barely a thing and a little glue went a long way to keeping things together well enough to pose it. I honestly miss the inner frames with screws.
I have this kit for a couple of years and still holding up good, one of my first Gunpla, the joints are still pretty strong and can do some poses ok , love this kit, wish they did more kits for him
oh man, this was my first gunpla kit, I love G gundam so I really wanted one of these to start my collection, I spent an entire afternoon building it and must have spent a solid 30 minutes just staring at itwhen I was finished, the super mode parts don't really hold up over time(the shoulder and calves keep falling if I leave it posed in super mode) but I'm impressed that the color correcting stickers and the sticker on the chest never unglued in 7 years now, a long comment but this was a mini-nostalgia hit for me.

Honestly Mecha, you should create a Nostalgia tiering system for kits that are 15+ years It would actually be interesting to find a kit which will be your base level for older kits and then rank them..
Wow this is nostalgic. I have the delux golden ver. Figure of shining gundam. The design is so iconic it still the pride of my entire colection even among mg. Make me want to shout every time im holding it "This hand of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! TAKE THIS! MY LOVE, MY ANGER, AND ALL OF MY SORROW....." Lol
Honestly the Fighting Action MG kits are the oldest kits I'd say are worth going back to. The leg articulation isnt great, but its also not necessarily terrible. The upper body is actually pretty well articulated and most importantly, its dirt cheap. You can get most G Gundam MG kits for around $30.
After we get hg's of all the main wing suits, who else wants to see hg's of the main g gundam suits and probably updated hg's of shining and god gundam. Also a devil gundam and tequila gundam would be nice to.
Tbh, I had parts mess up on the HiRes God Gundam to the point I put it back in the box and put it up. Still have MG God Gundam 1.0 on my self and it looks alot better than the HiRes to me.
Ya know, I actually ordered this specific kit a few days ago, along with the Burning (I grew up with the dub, so I say that instead of God Gundam) Gundam of the same time period. Funny how that works out, huh?

One of my top 3 favorites from growing up. Beside the couple of RX kits I have shining Gundam is my next run up with 4 versions of him and i can’t wait to get my mg of him
Wonderful review as always good sir. Just last night I built my first ever Master Grade Barbatos Lupus Rex, so this was fun to watch while fighting with the runners lol. I need to get the mobile suits from G-Gundam after I finish with Wing I think, hopefully they'll release a better kit for Shining Gundam at some point.
1/20 Domon unpainted figure is on scale to the HG Kobou Kai pilot figure, just fun fact though. Same with kits including 1/100 HG plus a separate but old pilots bundle sets etc. Modelers do have a great job painted those.
You should try out the MG ReGZ I think it still holds up pretty well for being a 2001 kit though there is technically a 1.5 version with the Unicorn variant

G Gundam should have the best articulation. For Gundams, especially in space, you're just a mobile gun platform. But G Gundam is all about martial arts.
The only problem i had building this was that i destroyed the forearm inner frame piece of the right arm, so now that piece pops out everytime i move that arm....im still crying.
The Shining Gundam has the Super Mode where it activates whenever Domon becomes angry and his suit turns from black to red to indicate his rage! It reminds me of when Fuzzy Lumpkins from the PPG became angry and the furry hillbilly's pink fur becomes red when he's angry after somebody touched his things, especally his banjo! GET YOUR MITTS OFF MY PROPERTY!!!
always look forward to you reviewing these older kits :) the thing is i dont think there are any other choice for 1/100 shinning gundam so if anybody wants a piece of shinning this is the only one :(
Definitely recommend glueing the chest jewel had my kit for 5 years and fell off never to be found again Replacement was a jewel sticker sheet tht took forever to find the right size but works

Butterfly joints in the torso was pretty advanced for 2002.
I like the silhouette of the older 1.0 gundams, they hold some kind of magic for me:)

Word. My Gunpla tool kit always has a small screwdriver just in case. Plus tightening the joints was literally tightening the joints.
When they had a tiny metal nut and screw yes. Gave you the ability to fine tune how tight the joints were and adjust as the kit got older.
You are way too critical of older kits. They have a lot to offer as models. The brown tier label is so stupid and misleading, get rid of it.
I have this kit for a couple of years and still holding up good, one of my first Gunpla, the joints are still pretty strong and can do some poses ok , love this kit, wish they did more kits for him

oh man, this was my first gunpla kit, I love G gundam so I really wanted one of these to start my collection, I spent an entire afternoon building it and must have spent a solid 30 minutes just staring at itwhen I was finished, the super mode parts don't really hold up over time(the shoulder and calves keep falling if I leave it posed in super mode) but I'm impressed that the color correcting stickers and the sticker on the chest never unglued in 7 years now, a long comment but this was a mini-nostalgia hit for me.
I can easily imagine review verdict
but old kit review is really fun to watch same as new kits review

the hand of MG Shining & God Gundam is interchangeable with the SD version.
Honestly the Fighting Action MG kits are the oldest kits I'd say are worth going back to. The leg articulation isnt great, but its also not necessarily terrible. The upper body is actually pretty well articulated and most importantly, its dirt cheap. You can get most G Gundam MG kits for around $30.

Really wish I wouldn't have sold my gold plated hyper mode Shining Gundam/God Gundam (had both) love these two kits.
After we get hg's of all the main wing suits, who else wants to see hg's of the main g gundam suits and probably updated hg's of shining and god gundam. Also a devil gundam and tequila gundam would be nice to.
Tbh, I had parts mess up on the HiRes God Gundam to the point I put it back in the box and put it up. Still have MG God Gundam 1.0 on my self and it looks alot better than the HiRes to me.

The mg shining gundam has nearly the same design as the hg 1/100 they work the same except the hg has a clear green gem and stickers for the gold
One thing good that came out of the Rona Gunpla Shortage is a lot of these backlog kits are getting some love, no matter how bad or good they are.

Ya know, I actually ordered this specific kit a few days ago, along with the Burning (I grew up with the dub, so I say that instead of God Gundam) Gundam of the same time period. Funny how that works out, huh?

I built the MG God Gundam and it looks like if you do some extra panel lining you can actually get some good detail from these kits

Wonderful review as always good sir. Just last night I built my first ever Master Grade Barbatos Lupus Rex, so this was fun to watch while fighting with the runners lol. I need to get the mobile suits from G-Gundam after I finish with Wing I think, hopefully they'll release a better kit for Shining Gundam at some point.
1/20 Domon unpainted figure is on scale to the HG Kobou Kai pilot figure, just fun fact though. Same with kits including 1/100 HG plus a separate but old pilots bundle sets etc. Modelers do have a great job painted those.

You should try out the MG ReGZ I think it still holds up pretty well for being a 2001 kit though there is technically a 1.5 version with the Unicorn variant
I have the unicorn one and I like it a lot! I might grab the classic one to keep in waverider mode

For Gundams, especially in space, you're just a mobile gun platform. But G Gundam is all about martial arts.
Maybe to pull an idea from magic, how about a time shifted rating for kits 15+ years old? In mtg it's a purple emblem
The only problem i had building this was that i destroyed the forearm inner frame piece of the right arm, so now that piece pops out everytime i move that arm....im still crying.
The Shining Gundam has the Super Mode where it activates whenever Domon becomes angry and his suit turns from black to red to indicate his rage! It reminds me of when Fuzzy Lumpkins from the PPG became angry and the furry hillbilly's pink fur becomes red when he's angry after somebody touched his things, especally his banjo!

Replacement was a jewel sticker sheet tht took forever to find the right size but works
