- Missed the live stream? Here are highlight moments from the demo of preset sounds from the PIANO, ELECTRIC PIANO and ORGAN categories on the new Yamaha MODX synthesizer. We'll try some of the Rhodes, DX7 piano and Hammond B3 organ sounds.
We'll be using the MODX6, which has the same features as the MODX7 and MODX8, with technology derived from the flagship Yamaha MOTAGE. Plenty of the AWM2 and FM sounds to enjoy.

Best demo's are those where people are playing music on instruments, and the very best are those were those who perform are enjoying themselves like you do!
Dear Mr. Yamaha, this video with this pleasant guy gave me the main push to get more in contact with your MODX6. Finally, I bought it. Thanks for sending him a device and thanks to Woody for making this long review, parted in several sound groups. Highly recommend Woody and the marketing guy in charge from Yamaha.
A lot of people bought it because of this video and i'm one of them.
This stream sells the device so much better than a dry presentation by Yamaha. Thanks Woody, I really enjoyed watching you play the keys.
Hey Woody. I just wanted to congratulate you on receiving the MODX from Yamaha and doing such a great job presenting it. Your enthusiasm is a joy to behold. Keep up the great work!
hi point, thanks for the comment, yeah, it was a proud thing for me.
Friend l Really Like your Videos, you Realli show what Yamaha Modx is capable of playing , wonderful sounds an Excellent Instrument , Congratulations!!! Bought my Modx6 , arrives This week , that God Always Blesses his Musical Work . Walmir Martins , Três Rios , Rio de Janeiro - Brasil.
hello and congrats on your new instrument, enjoy & best wishes
Sold! After not having played for AGES (yes, people make mistakes!) I want to re-start playing piano and keyboard. Need to have this... and really enjoy your channel and all the valuable content.
Lovely demo thanks woody.
The best review and stream ever!! i realy appreciated this time.Congratulations my friend Woody!!Best regards.Mysterio FTS
what a great demo! Thanks! Great sounds
Over all the best and inspiring performance you have had for me anyway woody !
14:35 that FM clav is outrageous... eargasmic sound!
It good to see you play on your new Yamaha mood x
Have experience with the YC61? how different is the organ engine?
Yeah, that’s a review I have been waiting for as well
Told you that the Montage sounded awesome.. By the way, if you go into Utilities and turn "Flash" to off, the Superknob stops that annoying blinking (it still changes color)
you were right all along! i'll check that out, the flashing doesn't bother me tbh.
Everybody's different. It drove me nuts--it was one of the first things that I changed. By the way, you *must* download the free Bosendorfer piano from Yamaha's web site It's probably the best piano sample on the market. As good as any Nord sample, in my opinion and also fuller and richer than the built-in CFX sample. The Chick Corea Rhodes is also worth grabbing (also free).
@geoffk777: Should I step into the MODX the first thing I'll do is open it up and remove the RGB led from that knob because of two reasons:
- My mind is allergic for this type of image dynamics;
- Don't want to be exhibistionistic about the instrument I'm playing. Joy and music first.
I really sympathize with you. But, if it's not blinking, the knob is not really offensive. And the LED color change when you move it is actually very useful. It's hard to see the indicators around the base of the knob when you're playing. But it's easy to see a color change indicating that it's been moved.
@geoffk777: Like you said, everybody is different. For me that knob is hugely distracting. But I do understand and appreciate that others may find it special, cool and useful.
Very Nice Woody... Can't wait to get this one.. !
This was a damn fun stream.
Almost 3 hours of non-stop Yamaha goodness...
Thanks, great showcase, Woody!
Woody,You Do Such an amazing job.
The most impressive thing in your work is an added personal touch.
Feels great!!
Love That MODX!!!!
nice fo you to say so, thanks
Love your grooves mate. Ordered mine weeks ago - 2 months wait to get one in Australia. Can't wait.
congrate, that's a crazy wait, hope you enjoy!
@@WoodyPianoShack, really hanging out. Using it as my second board for Jesus Christ Superstar in July, praying it arrives before June. Thanks again for this awesome Channel.
I like the organ sounds ! are realistic and warm, maybe for the overdrive effect
Incredible demo - thanks for doing this and showing some of the excellent FM synth sounds. The bell pianos sound incredible and that "clav" FM preset at 14:34 is awesome! Would be a struggle to recreate these presets using VSTs.
Good title, Woody. Those sounds standout as awesome.
Such beautiful DX EPs. I spent so many hrs programming the DX EPs in my MOX, none sounds as great as the original DX 7/MODX. Pure. Thanks!
Cannot wait to hear more sounds.
Thanks Woody, I’m trading my MOXF61 on a MODX7 next week. I rented the CK61 for a month but I just couldn’t get the Hammond as good as I needed. Tried the YC61 (Fantastic!) and then the MODX7. YC is great but the MODX has all my old sounds plus new sounds, 76 keys, 16 pounds, and (most important) a better UI than my old MOFX. I only bring one keyboard to all my gigs and that makes the the extra keys for splits and the seamless sound switching essential. Definitely a compromise for the organ sounds compared to the YC but I’ve been doing really well with the stock “Slow Jam” on my ten year old MOXF (also on the MODX) so I’m not loosing anything in that regard.
I’m really looking forward to the “all performance” architecture and not needing to worry about which voices are in which performances etc. FM might be good too. Haven’t messed with FM in decades. 76 keys OMG yes. 16pounds, check. Compact footprint with wheels above keys (every little bit helps). The touch screen seemed like garbage until I realized that they view angle is critical, not iPad quality but huge improvement over my old MOXF LCD. In many ways, this is the keyboard I’ve been waiting for since I bought a 40 pound Classic Motif 7 twenty years ago. Finally, a one keyboard, do it all solution that fits my needs. I should have saved myself some aggravation and made the trade 4 years ago.
I'm the type of person who gets hooked on a thing and doesn't stop until they've got it. I'm feeling this with the MODX. I think it's time to make a major upgrade from my beloved CTX-5000.
Great demo Woody.. Best I've seen yet!
wow, thx!
Thanks so much, Woody! This is GREAT ... many great tips here in the comments section, too. I look forward to learning more about you and your UA-cam channel+. I ordered my MODX7 this morning and already thinking of changing my stage name to 'Superknob'. Thoughts? All the best.
That was super fun. I'm trying to figure out what keyboard to buy and this did a nice job of showing some of the things it can do. Thanks. Nice playing too. I'm gonna copy some of those jazz chord voicings.
I hear a "consistent" speed to full rotor....I need that old mechanical separation...Thanks! I enjoyed your demo. CJ
Enjoying the channel, Woody.
Great content.
This channel - along with others - has inspired me to rekindle my romance with music production.
Thanks!
awesome!
7:51 Tour de France by my favourite band. Thank you Woody!
The Organ sounds are to the point where people can stop complaining about them being on a synth. Sure, if you really want the next level up, then you get a Hammond XK5, but that's another board to bring to the gig if you are playing out. People don't have a problem with piano and Rhodes coming from a synth versus the real thing. The Leslie sim wasn't perfect, but it sounds good, and people can get a Neo Vent II if you really want a good Leslie sim. The synth will still sound electronic when it comes to the organ, but it's pretty close these days.
A lot of people complained that the Kronos has distorted organ samples that don't work well in clean situations.
CrimSun - the Kronos CX-3 organ engine is modeled. It has no chance of distorting if you have the effects off. There are sampled organs in it too, but not the best it has to offer.
I even have the original Korg CX-3 and i like the sound of it even though it doesn't sound exactly like a B3
its prolly where we go wrong ... the Kronos engine IS called CX3 .. not B3. its the only engine of the Kronos that is a disapointment .. because it sounds like what its supposed too a Korg CX3 .. NOT a Hammond B3 :)
Is there any drawbars control on the organ sounds ? can i find Farfisa and Vox continental sounds here ? thanks
Yamaha made a good choice here nice demo.
So, I am looking at these new synths now here in 2020. They sound amazing compared to my JX3P and my Ensoniq ESQ1, but one thing that is a little concerning is the flimsy looking power wall wart pack that is now powering these. My others had nice hefty power cords. Also is the fact that my older synths have nice wood bottoms. That's why they have held up over all these years. Would you gig with these? Have they held up for you so far? I am thinking that with the chassis being all plastic, hauling them around may not be such a great idea.
I have minimal experience gigging with modern keyboards with plastic bodies, but if my all-plastic $450 keyboard is structurally sound and durable, the I imagine something like this would be even better.
you are fantastic and this new yamaha-----It can read all the yamah dx7 library,,,,fantastic...
beautiful
Wonderful! How do the keys feel? The "feel" of the keys is really important to me. Is it typical "synth" action or "piano" action?
totally synth action bro, light but feels nice. the modx8 is weighted piano.
Lot's of people are asking if it has a sequencer. It has a very basic one-track recorder, but nothing like a Korg Kronos or a real Workstation. Yamaha assumes that you'll use it with your computer DAW.
a one track recorder? don't think so, my material says 16 tracks + tempo track + scene track, 130,000 notes
Maybe they improved it from the Montahe then. A lot of people actually criticized the Montage for that, but it was a deliberate decision by Yamaha. In fairness they did include Cubase for free.
It's actually surprising that the MODX improves on the Montage in some ways, for example, the "Rhythm" button isn't on the Montage, and it seems very handy. The DAW controls are also missing.
seems a bit unfair to add new features to the lower-end model, but they did the same with the MOXF and it's audio usb interface that the Motif lacked.
Its propably because Yamaha had a truckload of angry Motif users about what they see as a sucessor of the Motif having absolutely non workstation functions whatsoever on the Montage. Think they are beginning to accept that the new directions they have taken with the Montage as a "Live" synth may be hitting with the "DJ" type of users (do i have to mention the big blinking knob that you either LOVE or plain hate .. lol) but close to NONE of the pro keyboardists that for 2 decades have fed Yamaha by using Motif on stage (and that is a hella lot users) are really interested in dishing their MOTIFsx or fx for a DX-7/rompler synth without an onboard seq/daw/sampling workstation. Montage is a really cool Synth, but its definetly not for everyone.
That's true, but I understand what Yamaha was thinking. I really never use the sampling or Workstation sequencing on my Kronos. I have Kontact and several DAWs, so why would I bother?
“TV Show” EP, maybe Doogie Howser or Law & Order. So the Montage does not have these rhythm patterns, or just not the button?
Hello Woody! I was hoping you could help me with something. I was wondering what do you have the velocity curve set at for your MODX? When I play it hard or soft it doesn’t sound as expressive as yours. Please help! Cheers!
just on the standard default setting my friend, but with a little practice I can adapt to most actions.
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks!
1:39 sounds like heaven
Very nice piano sound at 0:51.
Nice playing! I haven't played for weeks, but now after hearing you, oh well. I'm off! :D
glad to have done my bit!
Hi! good demo :) question is can be turned off the super knob flashing light in the menu???
yeah, dim it or completely off
does it sound better when recorded via Usb rather than through its analogue outputs?
no difference to my ears, it's more about convenience.
Wow! Why kick out 4K and just get the MODX? I’m leaning on getting the MODX7 instead of a used motif xf7 (even tho played and still love the xf series). The sounds are better (even tho the grand piano in the MODX is not as warm as the motif xf series) but the orchestral and electric pianos are spot on! Thanks for the review!😌🎹🎶👍🏾
13:51 love that jam!
dx cHILL IS THE PATCH
good demo's there. I do hear a lot of key press clicks. does this mean the end off the keypress is not damped?
If you're talking about the Rhodes sounds, the Montage has them as well. The key clicks are sampled, so you can dial the amount for the Rhodes patches.
awesome. I thought it was the actual key itself hitting some plastic, or "long nails" hitting keys :)
where were the wrulie sounds??
i wondered the same, I didn't spot them in the heat of the moment
Are there "virtual drawbars" on the sound? i am a Kurzweil player....
"I'm Not in Love" by 10cc at 13:51 that what it reminds me of
Love that sound right at 11:12
how did you make the leslie speaker sound again ??
the sim is built in.
@@WoodyPianoShack ..thanks I will try to find it
Love your videos. Just saw you in you "unwrapping" video. You have to tell me (and I am hoping so badly) ... where did you get that little red piano? That has to be the cutest little piano I've ever seen. Please tell me it's available on Amazon. Please? Thanks so much!
i suspect it's a swedish thing, but i believe that korg sell some tiny pianos!
Rhodes? Where we're going, we don't need ... Rhodes.
That made me laugh 🤣
which ones sounded like the DX7?
Does it has a sampler
"Who's Dave??" 😅😅 Exactly.
Especially those sound library packs.
They're full of other peoples names haha
Nice video how do you rate the Wurlitzer sounds on this, and the main piano sounds,im trying to choose between the Korg Kronos 2 and Yamaha Montage 8 i currently have a Yamaha CP4 would the Piano sound be any better on the Montage than the CP4.
i have found that the yamaha DPs have terrible wurlis and rhodes, this one is much better, but still no Nord.
Show me a GREAT EMULATION of the B-3. The Leslie high rotor speed never matches the Leslie cabinet. They seem to be in "sync". CJ
How's the piano feel and action? Considering one of these but I'm primarily a pianist but also want to get into synth. Does the plastic chassis render it unsuitable for serious piano playing? Compared to something like the Nord Stage 3 in piano terms?
you'd want the weighted 88 modx8 then, but i've not tried one.
Pc88 Vs modx. What say you??
I'm seriously confused. This keyboard has more controllers than Korg Krome EX, but the sound's are not as pure as the Korg Krome. Which keyboard I have to buy?
very nice mate, ive got the dx7 plugin, you got me on a bandcamp mate?
dx7 + cubase hallion sonic 3 is possibly this aha
Suggestion Woody: A Demo of not nessecarily all, but some of the bread and butter sound groups .. Piano, and organs already covered, Brass , woodwind, Strings solo and sections, etc. you get the picture :)
Still gotta say for this kind of instrument its propably some of the best Organ patches I have long heard. comparing it to a clonewheel wouldn't mean anything .. but for a rompler the sounds you demoed on the live stream was surpricingly good. most keyboards normally fail horrible in the organ department
right on, good suggest, i never know what to play in the woodwind and brass categories though...
@mrdali67; Well the motif is, disrespectfully said, a rompler. The montage / modx line combines that with the AFM2 engine. And that engine is particularly capable of producing / emulating various classic organ sounds. Adding the FX section, like on the SY99, gives you an awesome organ performance.
The problem (wich is common to all Yamaha products) about their organ sounds is, that despite their reputation and normally very respected position in the DSP effects department they never managed to produce a leslie effect that sound good in fast mode. They sound good in chorale(slow) mode but things go wrong in the speed up and fast mode. The basic Organ sound however wether its modelled (Tyros and Genos) or a good unprocessed sampling from their sample library is often ok. I own an old P9000Pro and when you route the organ sound out seperately and run it thru eg a minivent or (wish i never sold mine) Dynachord CLS222 the sound is top notch. Ok it doesn't compare with a dedicated clonewheel but that is usually not fair to compare these instruments with either.
@@WoodyPianoShack woodwind, rhapsody in blue-clarinet-split orchestra, mood indigo-sax section-split brass, color my world, split, piano, flute. birdland-brass section-split solo trumpet, i'm getting sentimental over you-trombone-split orchestra, Maleguena-trumpets, brass section, theme from rocky-trumpets,-fanfare, Finlandia excerpts-wind ensemble/brass-should cover all but oboe, and bassoon.
thinking of buying this and want to know if there is a way to turn off that flashing knob light. I find it very distracting.
yes, you can dim it or switch it off
Not sure if you still have your MODX loaner around, but if you do you should check out the Chic's Mark V and Bosendorfer collection downloads. Really nice on the MODX
still around, yes, that's on my todo list, thanks for the tip
Hello Sir !
Is there any option for vocador?
yes, there is vocoder effect on the A/D input
@@WoodyPianoShack Thank you so much Sir
Yeah Man you've got our attention,Rhodes voices are cool Pad Voices brilliant DX7s and FM Synthesis is truly unique.Really warm analogue type stuff and youre right that unit rocks.Great video Man really enjoyed this Cheers from Australia Retail price even if approx?
thanks wiseman for the comment, recommended retail is USD1300 ish, but I guess it'll eventually be a bit cheaper than that in the stores.
Just a fantastic product :)
I wonder what the CP 80 sound is like on this unit. One of those nice original FM electric pianos would sound great behind a CP 80. Ended question, do these things have standard many ports? I mean, it would be nice having the 88 no version of this keyboard plugged into all of my rack units. I mean, some of these nice FM sounds along with CA Roland JV 1080, a Korg M1, or some of those other classic rack units that I have.
need to find the cp80 patches, i'm curious too, you got your standard midi in and out so it would be fine as a controller.
Woody Piano Shack I doubt it would ever happen because of licensing issues, but it would be nice if you could just buy one keyboard that would do everything. I mean, M1, Trinity, JV 1080, DX seven, Alessi squad resent, Yamaha motif/montage, end it would also be if that keyboard came with the different sound library so you could Lodean whatever you wanted. You know, kind of like a sampler, but a little bit better quality. I mean with like the same affects processors and everything as the F are mentioned instruments had as well. I’m sure I’m missing other famous synthesizers that I would also like to be in this keyboard, in fact I know I am, Roland D50. But again, wouldn’t it be nice to just have one keyboard that would just do it all?
And also for the record, Marion FM synthesis with PCM sample based synthesis has actually been done before. Like even before the montage. Yamaha had their SY 77/SY 99, and I believe unless he is also had an instrument that did the same thing. I want to say it was called the fusion. And I even believe the SY 77/SY 99 A rack module called the TG 77. And from what I have read, DX seven patches can be loaded into the TG 77/SY 77/SY 99.
Alesis
And I also want to apologize for any of their errors in my comments and things. I am legally blind, so I use the dictation feature on my iPhone and iPad to write these comments. And for some reason, it doesn’t always seem to pick everything up correctly.
Thnx!
3:23 Nothing like playing some good ol' Jeff Lorber Rain Dance! I learned that song the hard way. Played it at a gig and we had another keyboardist who played a cheat version of it. They never brought him back...lol. The Rhodes EP sold me. Yamaha has been so behind that sound compared to Roland in my books. When I buy this board, it'll be my top board. I still use my MO8 as a bottom. I stick to my EP's on that board for gigging.
the rhodes seems greatly improved over the motif and moxf. haven't listened critically to it though, wonder how it holds up without fx. something to try.
The “Rhodes” sounds pretty realistic!
If it's the same Rhodes of the Montage, they even sampled it without the amplifier on, so you can set the amount of key click you want.
I'm thinking either a FA-06 or MODX... which has better sounds. Both are good boards and it's subjective but what do you think? thanks
I have the FA-08, it's a great keyboard, but I wish it had the FM synth capability of the MODX - you don't get the same clean FM bell-pianos Woody demonstrates in this video. You can of course supplement using VST plugins like FM8, but there's nothing like having it available on a standalone device, as well as all the presets (FM8 presets kinda suck and aren't very musical).
FA has the modeled tonewheel organ, a few Supernatural Acoustic sounds and VA synthesis, so it just depends on what you are into.
True the Supernatural sounds are really great!
Many of the sounds I heard in this demo are better than on my FA-06. On the other hand, my FA has a lot of good sounds, good enough for me, and I like to have a sequencer without having to be tied to a computer or hardware sequencer.
hi rick, imho, the modx does sound better, but also more expensive than the fa. and the fa does those classic roland pad, strings and d50 sounds like nobody else.
How many Layers can we put on this Keyboard?
at least 8, i know that for sure.
Nice!
What's the song at 9:49? It sounds so familiar
Periwinkle !

go woody, go woody, go woody, it's your birthday, it''s your birthday, it's your birthday.. go woody, go woodsy, go woody, it's your organ, it's your organ, it's your organ....lol
whats the tune at 4:35 ? sounds familiar ???
jeff lorber raindance perhaps, but a common ii-v-i progression!
13:52 I need a full version now please
Threw a bit of Jeff Lorber in there!
I heard you.
mine should arive this week to join all the other 16 of my collection from 84 to now, and yes all ine from new, junos roland and dx7 to tyros 2 (i liked that one best for some reason, had every tyros after but kept 2 and traded up eachtime for the rest, got genos now etc too, but i need 8 here with some weight and revibe the interchangability, great price point :)
0:51 sounds like mccartney's new song "I Don't Know" introduction
Tv Show FM = Twin Peaks?
that could be it!
I like it a lot. They could not get me to bite on Montage..too anti-workstation, and too expensive. This, bridges that gap by at least giving us the drums now, and pretty much..most of the montage power. A steal now, I will definitely get it.
kul jag har lagt en beställning på denna men undrar om det finns nå bra ljud som har med trance och dance o göra har dock inte funnit någon som ännu har lagt upp det.
check my twitch, there is a live stream demo of FM synth pad sounds.
This or Roland FA06 ????
i think the MODX has better sounds, plus those amazing multi-arps, but it's a higher price. if yamaha had priced it the same, then there would be no contest.
MOXF, Montage or MODX easily.
I think Yamaha are afraid to put more user memory because in such case they won't sell future products . That's why they expand only the factory library space of new products and the user memory remains limited to 1gb since Motif ES that was released in 2003 . What a tricky conspiracy to rip our money .
16 years have passed and they don't want the user to have more memory
So they avoid putting 2 ram slots (user option if he want to buy 32gb of ram or flash or not over the 1gb of factory flash) and instead they promote their new products saying that the factory sample memory was expanded from 700mb to 5 GB...etc etc . So they always maintain user memory as low as possible because they promote their new products using the factory sample memory size as marketing tactic .
This way some users will buy the new flagships because they are tired of the factory sounds and only 1gb of flash user memory is a joke ...marketing tactics folks . Is not practical to load erase and reload sound banks by staying limited in 1gb....I have 50 Motif XS sound banks . But I can load only 3 or 4 and if I want to load a new one I need to erase the ones that are stored so you can have 100 banks but will be a pain to load reload for different projects ..
Now I use a PC and I can have as much memory I need ...
Good points, still i can get alot out of even my Yamaha EX5 flagship synth from 1998 even with its extremly limited memory.
Still, there were synth workstations (Alesis Fusion) in 2005 that had 30 gigs of memory standard (with 128 GB in total with all the memory exansion cards added) and even a SSD exansion slot (upto 500 GB i think). That synth was in the same price range as the MODX.
Don’t forget the new memory is flash. Loading 1GB into a Motif ES from a USB stick would take a decade, lol.
Woody looks like Sean Harris in Mission Impossible - Fallout. That is if he plays MODX for 3 days a row.
lol! must. take. break. from. modx.
can i import some nord pianos like Royal Grand, Imperial, Silver Grand multisamples in this ModX?
you cannot lucas, the nord format won't work here. i'm not sure what the yammy supports, probably raw audio formats like wav and mp3
Woody Piano Shack thanks Woody i really appreciate these Rhodes sounds, but for piano playing i would prefer my Nord electro 5, but everything is a matter of taste, this modX is nice.
it's early days, but I found the sounds of the modx more enjoyable to play, at least at home, in a gig situation might be different. The UI of the Electro hard to beat!
Woody: The question is, does it feel as much as an instrument as the Nord Electro feels to you?
hmm, tough one. the modx sounds much better, more versatile and cheaper, but the ui of the nord, the high-end pro quality feel, the keys and the metal case, no complicated menus or screens, just choose a piano, dial in an organ and play. that's ultimately what I value most in an instrument, you really need to be a player to get the best out of the nord.
4:22 ????
11:00 sounds a lot like bread goodbye girl :)
I want to buy this but I have the feeling that it is to plasticy
Lorber!!!!
more of same
Sounds like shite
