The MODX is my main keyboard and it does pretty well all I need. There's nothing compelling about the plus that would make me want to upgrade, but it's good that they're continuing to improve the line.

improving the line would mean upgrading the DACs, the SSS and the touchscreen. Unfortunately the MODX+ is no improvement, just an excuse for a price hike.

6:20 From the video it appears that FM smart morphing is a feature exclusive to the MODX+. Infact, it's also implemented in the latest firmware update of the OG MODX since like one or two years.

Yes indeed - I have owned the original and what I like about the Smart Morph is the ability to quickly dial in variations of the FM engines, not necessary the 'morphing'. It is pretty cool.
I think my MODX7 is very good enough to make good music for years to come. And honestly speaking, there is still so much more to explore in my MODX7. Great video!

Have you tried using AT from another keyboard over midi? As it's in the OS and sounds.

I am cool with this upgrade. I sold my MODX8 a year ago & I was thinking of buying a used MODX6. The upgrades may not seem like much to most, but the extra memory for custom sample packs makes it worth the extra $$
A Montage user told me that Yamaha is downgrading the digital/analogue conversion codec due to the continuing chip shortage, I don't know if MODX is also affected, so a pre-2021 MODX6 may be your best bet. The chip shortage should end around 2024-2025, I think, as that is when TSMC, Intel, and Samsung will have finished new semiconductor factories.

An Andertons guitar/keyboard customer of forty plus years, I was recently looking to buy my first new keyboard in thirty years.
I knew I would have to make some compromises to get (most of) what I wanted.
Found this video series a few months ago and all of them to be interesting and useful in many different ways.
Using information and examples provided across a whole selection of 'boards I have now purchased the MODX8+.
Delighted!
Too many pluses to mention.
But two things I think Yamaha could (easily?) improve in a future revision:-
1) The display should be angled - its' optimum display is fixed straight up and, unless a player is standing over it, it will never be seen for 100% efficiency.
2) Aftertouch (I know I should've bought the Montage, but I compromised on price).
Love listening to Jack, Luke and Mike playing their different brand preferences.
Look forward to more videos, especially now referencing the MODX8+.
Maybe some on-stage uses?

I got my 7+ from Andertons a week ago. This is replacing a MODX6 I got from Andertons a few years ago. No regrets. I wanted more keys more than anything else, but the added memory is a big deal as well.
If it’d had aftertouch…… that’s what I miss in my MODX ! Aftertouch is so needed! For vibrato on solo sounds and for opening/closing filters etc etc
Defo Lex!!!! Like I've already said on this '+' upgrade I'd much rather pay the extra for that alone - sure the extra £££ would have covered that one. I use my GEM S3 Turbo with Poly Aftertouch as my controller synth 😄👍
The real upgrade would be better key touch, or pure AD exit as montage. Aftertouch too))

I ran out of polyphony with drums + ARP bass + a composite sound made of 2 sounds. With a long lasting reverb ,i can clearly hear some sounds are missing so extra polyphony makes sense to me for beautifull 80s sound.
32 patterns instead of 16 would have been a nice gift as an upgrade as well
My friend and I hypothesized that if the AN-X engine isn't in this unit then maybe they're making a standalone AN1X remake unit, which I'll buy in a heartbeat
So, there is no on-board sequencer on this newer model? If not, do they have accompanying software?

Something that no one has noticed and i really like is that they removed the texture con the Mod/Pitch controllers that made them look cheap (and hurt your finger after a while)

I really don't understand why 10 years ago I could buy a ultranova for 1/4 the price that came with after-tcouh but its still missing from these new synths from Yamaha and Roland. I can't justify the price when I would need to buy a midi controller with after touch separately. Great video as always though, quality content!
They should at least do a rackmount desktop module with full controls still for people who don't want a keyboard without aftertouch. Hell, channel-aftertouch is old hat again since the Hydrasynth and Iridium Keys came out.. we want polyphonic aftertouch again.. that Yamaha had 45 years ago!
It's 100% because Yamaha wants to upsell you to a Montage with aftertouch.

wow i thought jack was nifty on the keys but that guy can make it sing.
I had the previous model of this product and to get rid of it as I could hear the velocity switching especially on the electric pianos. From memory there are only 3 or 4 velocity levels available.
The upgraded specs (this all comes from the addition of a second SWP70 chip) opens the door for MONTAGE and MODX+ to get a major firmware upgrade with something like AN-X in the next few months - something which was previously gated by the single chip in the original MODX
Where did you get the specs from that state there is an additional SWP70 in this machine? without the additional chip, i don't see how yammy can justify the additional cost of this new version. The rubberised pitch bend/mod wheels add about 4 quid to the price. the additional sample memory is already in the original MODX, just limited by the firmware and although the additional polyphony / SSS is a welcomed addition - I just don't see how this can justify the £500+ price rise
@@DJScottBWarr the existing MODX master PCB has a space for a second SWP70, it makes perfect sense for Yamaha to fill it and gain Montage specs without having to manufacture a new board or do anything else apart from minor cosmetics like the rubberised wheels and matte end panels, then they can claim Montage parity (almost) initially and then debut a new engine in a few weeks to great acclaim.
@@KierDarby Yep, i guess we need to wait till someone opens one of the boards and shows us if they have put a second chip in there. Never really understood why they just didn't do it from start as we are not going to end up with 2 distinct sets of firmware one for the original MODX and one for the new. However i do feel Yamaha will now give us on the old one and 2.52 will be the last update.
@@DJScottBWarr I hate to be a party pooper, but I'm inclined to agree. I have literally just taken delivery of a MODX7 and was thinking that I would curse my purchase.... That is not the case. I was expecting to be blown away with a whole host of new "+" features. Truth is I'm not.
Good news is the used MODX market will be nice for those looking.
This is very similar to one of those George Foreman grilling machines, but it has extra features. If they could make the price similar, it would make for a really tough choice between the two.
Well - it's now an ModX with Montage capabilities sound wise - lighter, easier to move around, compatible with all the sounds of the Montage. The only thing it doesn't have is the extra sliders, knobs and direct-select buttons for performance, the Balanced line outs, and minus 2 extra line outs, and minus the high end DACs of the Montage. Other than that - it's a Montage worthy performer that is directly compatible with the Montage - at a much lower price. Nice.
Plus aftertouch
Is there any change to the number of USB audio outs compared to the original? I'm very happy with my MODX 6, other than the fact that it only has 4 stereo outs that you have to assign, compared to say a Fantom-06 which has a dedicated stereo out for each of the 16 parts.
I don't think it's changed unless they've forgotten to update the manual. MODX/MODX+ should be 10 channels (5 stereo), Montage should be 32 channels (16 stereo) for audio over USB
I have a MODX7 and well... I was expecting some major upgrades more than polyphony and more storage. The SSS for 8 parts it's really good but I don't know if I would pay for an upgrade just because of it
I just downloaded the user manual for the MODX+ from the Yamaha site, and according to that manual, SSS is still only for 4 parts on the MODX+.
I tell you what.. if the AN-X engine does come out and they artificially limit it from the firmware update in the original MODX (with reduced polyphony obv).. then there will be riots
Yup. Sorry guys. It's 4 parts. I ****ed up. I guess the big brother has a bit more power somewhere. But have a play with the keyboard control button in the mixing. That's really useful, set up on scenes. I use it for seemless switching and the mute option in the mixing section for hard cuts. Both have musical merit. Happy playing!

Dose it have the same converters as the montage?
If Yamaha really wanted to tempt me to upgrade my current MODX, a VA engine might have swung it for me. It's a superb keyboard, and anyone purchasing one now will benefit from the upgrade. It's not worth it, in my opinion, for a current owner to upgrade to what is a relatively small benefit compared to cost
What do you need a VA engine on the MODX for? The rompler engine is capable enough as a semi-VA engine. A granular or wavetable engine would bring something new to the table.

PWM and osc sync are the main reasons a VA synth is desired.
@@Jason75913 You make a good point, however, my point was more focused on the new upgrade. If you are buying one from new, great, an already capable and brilliant keyboard has a couple of extra tricks up its sleeve. For someone, like me, who already owns one, the difference isn't enough to tempt me into swapping old for new. The VA engine was just an example of something that might do it. I agree with you in that the synth sounds on the MODX, for a ROMPLER, are exceptional.

That seems really great but an additional £250 for a bit more polyphony, and still just 4 faders, I don't know man...
It seems like an inflation adjustment more than a revision really.
I bought the MODX8+ and when adding any additional patches to any pianos, notes dropped off after a moment and continued dropping, . I could even stop playing, and strike a note several times and the notes stopped producing sound. I sent it back, they sent another one and it did exactly the same thing.
I am switching to the Roland Fantom 8.
The MODX8+ is supposed to have 128 note polyphony on both AWM and FM . Not sure what happened, but hopefully they get a firmware update soon.
Regardless, I'm packing the second one today and sending it back to Sweetwater.

@@martijnvanspaendonck7989 I got the Fantom 8. Not happy with the pads and strings bleed issues. Not smooth at all.
The Fantom is known for having notes drop outs. Is a well known issue. OUCH
There is a way to change the curve of the notes so that they drop off better and negate some of the bleed. it's like programming cobol in 1982 to get it done though.

The MOXF keybed feel beats MODX no matter the version, in my experience. Not the best keys ever by far, but MODX is worse all around.

I have the MODX8 and the Fantom 08. This makes me think if there's an update coming to the Montage ? Perhaps also a + model ?
Which one do you prefer for acoustic sounds, EP sounds, organs and pads. Also which ones easier for layering and stuff, having control over the volumes of each layer? It’d really help if you responded....thanks!

For me I prefer the ease of choosing sounds on the Fantom and the keys. I would say that in general layering is better on the modx since you have the superknob. Everyone has a different perspective but for me that's how I use the Yamaha...at the mo

Looking at the modx+ owners manual, it says seamless sound switching is only available with 4 parts, not 8. If that’s correct, this video needs editing.
Investigating further, looking at the Blake Angelos modx+ video where he plays an 8 part fmx electric piano performance, he then goes back to the performance selection screen. You would expect that patch to have SSS lit up under its name. It doesn’t.
Hey Rog. You're right. Only 4 parts SSS from patch to patch. I also thought I'd seen that and this keyboard was actually still a prototype.... but no. I guess the Montage is still King. Happy playing. 👍🏼
If only "modern" keybeds were as good as the old ones from SY77, Kawai K5000S or Fantom G6.

I have an issue when layering the sound the keys cut off
So they went from a 35 year old pitch/mod wheel design that I have even on cheap old YS100's, to a 20 year old S90 pitch wheel? Wow. And polyphony numbers that we've been having for AT LEAST 20 years? And a HDD storage size from 1998?? WAAAAAAAUUUWW Yamaha, you knocked it out of the park!! (Still like the MODx though: bought one yesterday. :))

Which one is better, Modx8+ or CP 88?
Anyone having issues with quality of keys on the Modx8+? I’ve had mine since Oct 22’ and a few of my keys are “clacky” and is noticeable while playing a key repetitive. Especially on mine, middle E.

I have an MODX8, i use in my studio only, for me i don't see the point in upgrading tbh.
It just seems like a MODX with Montage specs for flash size and polyphony.. and missing (a keybed with) aftertouch still of course. No AN-X engine yet? But if there's pretty much parity with MODX+/Montage then presumably a Montage+ will drop

@@saloniagrawal5676 A footpedal is a good workaround but there is several solutions to fix the lack of aftertouch. You can find the first generation Modx8 second hand for a good price these days.

Yup. I mucked up. Sorry. Still 4 parts. I hadn't been sent the new OS and mistakenly thought it was polyphony that enabled SSS but clearly I'm no designer. 🙂
0 mention of keyed improvements for the 6 & 7..has the quality improved or are they the same cheap noisy poorly dampened toy keys from the previous version?
toy keys suck! So happy I bought a Yamaha MOTIF XF 6. Legendary, sound are timeless and the feel is amazing! Hard to find, but get one! Yea no seamless patches, but you have master mode and voice mode and enough spaces to put your patches and have the MotifXF be a great top board! I use a RD2000 on the bottom, got rid of my KRONOS!

Is this a standalone?
At first look, there is no difference compared to the MODX, is it necessary to evolve the modx into modx+ instead of create a new keyboard, between Montage and modx? like Roland (Between Fa and Fantom, there is Fatom0) and Korg (between krome and kronos, there is nautilus)...
Fantom 0 is not between FA and Fantom. It is replacing the FA.
Kronos is discontinued, Nautilus replaced it (it's the same Kronos in different shell and bunch of sounds missing to be sold for extra bucks).
@@alicaramba7680 and Nautilus doesn’t have aftertouch. That means the only currently available keys from Korg with aftertouch are PA1000 and Pa5X which are arrangers…
I honestly think yamaha could've taken a different approach with this, it's not much of an upgrade from the modx, it's 2022.....they could've just made a new flagship🤦🤦🤦

There was a big miss for not having balanced outputs. This is supposed to be a professional keyboard, especially if touting daw features.

DOes this mean there is an upgrade for my existing MoDX with a firmware upgrade or my MoDX is obsolete already lol. Not that I use all the polyphony.
It's obsolete if you now have more than 64 fingers.

First, your keyboard still works so I don’t understand the obsolete comment. Next, firmware won’t change your hardware. The PCB board is different so a firmware won’t give you a MODX+.

If a synth is powered by an a/c adaptor, it will sound thin and won't cut through a mix.
I think the only reason the modx8+ is better it’s because it has 128/128 polyphony instead of 128/64. That is significant enough
