It's so sad hearing him talk about having cool ideas but then has to run it through the old shitty writers committee to make sure they are okay with everything and reassure them that their ideas will be forced into the story as well. Brought him back to be in charge and fix everything, but he still has to walk on eggshells around everyone that ruined what he built.
Here's likely what happened: They're 10 months in, he starts back, sees it, sees it can't be changed, and then says "this is what I want to do though" and they said "nah we can't squeeze that in" and so he said "what if we do it over 3 expacs?" and they were like "oh alright"
@@boi3987 some leaks suggest he won't be dead but will be rollin around in a wooden wheelchair. Or that may have been a deliberate troll on the dataminers, dunno. Personally I'd be ok with a crippled Khadgar. They see me rollin, they hatin'.
he needs to outright retcon the damage Danuser did to Warcraft, retcon post-legion to DF and start over after the defeat of the legion. That's the only way ppl are going to come back to caring about WoW's story, cause Danuser destroyed/retconned so much and added so much fanfic garbage to the IP.
I just pretend those expacts didn't exist. I left near the end of legion and saw the sword strike Azeroth. Upon my return, as far as I'm concerned, the story will just continue where I left off. I might visit those expacks in the future for loot, but I don't take them seriously or let them ruin my day.
there's a reason he quit years ago, he doesn't have any clue how to fix the game. instead of hiring 100 good devs they hired one old retired guy to get the bald men to buy more expansions without needing to build anything new.
Worst mage of all time has got to be Aethas Sunreaver. Leader of the horde elves of dalaran, folds to garrosh’s demands, let’s innocent people get brutally massacred in what’s supposed to be a neutral city and now we see him in Orgrimmar at the trading post sending jaina gifts and apology letters 😂 just sad
bruh this is a pretty bad synopsis this is like saying hitler was a misunderstood painter who was wronged then decided to make a war to create a world thats better. Aethas fought fucking malygos dude, shielded the entire of northrend dalaran against him and the lich king. hes a protector. in one short story lorthemar said he admired that aethas always wanted peace, but he was young and naive especially politically which foreshadows how he is. however, he frequently mogged lorthemar and called him out on his dumb shit. coz of him (ironically yes) horde magisters and horde were allowed back into dalaran. he still motioned to send forces against garrosh, just so happened that force was traitor. dalaran was supposed to be neutral. if anything, lorthemar was partially responsbile for letting people get massacred in the neutral city as HE was the one caving to demands. aethas actually advocated for the sindorei to break ties to the horde entirely. it was when horde members used an insider to steal shit, aethas was threatened to back down. jaina has a psychotic break and decides to massacre horde members en masse (as you do). like idk bruh he got dealt a pretty bad hand, and you sayin hes the worst mage has gotta be cap, coz ingame it is stated he is at the SAME POWER LEVEL AS KHADGAR AND JAINA
@@ljp400 "bruh this is a pretty bad synopsis this is like saying hitler was a misunderstood painter who was wronged then decided to make a war to create a world thats better." And you fail.
Not only is Aethas a massive alliance and dalaran simp. He is also a traitor to bloodelfs and the horde. In mage questlines. He steals from the blood elf treasury the artifacts of Kael'thas and gifts them to the Dalaran. Man. He doesnt even have rights in Silvermoon. The highest ranking mage is Rommath and he is the successor to Kael'thas. Where the f is he in the story?!
They need to recreate quest lines like the original defias. A quest over multiple zones that you stumble upon and your understanding of the threat grows over time
Thats fine but I'd argue it's less about the multi zone storyline and more about the lore being grounded. Simple conflict, families with reasonable motivation. Not this interdimensional meta level stuff.
@@xXdnerstxleXx I agree. The same thing happened with Marvel. Save the world, then the galaxy, then the multiverse, and then? People stopped caring after Thanos I think.
@@mufasafalldown8401 yup, infinity war was like the cumilation of everything they built up. Then they made endgame, some time travel shenanigans and it was downhill from there. I'd argue wow had it's story climax already. It was with Legion. They could have made the game go on indefinetly if it weren't for the limitations though ever escalating stakes lore wise. The Defias brotherhood is a perfect exqmple for such a grounded storyline. I also knew Shadowlands lore had to be bad before it came out, it's cause the only reason why you'd ever expand on the afterlive, is to bring fan favorite characters based on nostalgia back. Just 1 giant fan fiction. It was doomed from the start as it's most likely pushed down from marketing.
The Defias line was very cool because it was reasonable and understandably motivated. Van Cleef's reason for doing what he did made sense, and there was even a hook to a much larger scale story when you found out just who it was they kidnapped. That was cool. Legend of Stalvan was cool. There were lots of great low level storylines that were local in nature and had nothing to do with a world ending threat. Feels like it's been a long long time since they wrote anything like that.
Dragging Chris out is just to convince older WoW fans everything will be fine and to keep consuming product but nothing will actually change. In politics its called the red meat strategy.
The worst part is he's now probably obligated to stay around for those 3 expansions despite knowing he's been leashed by the "committee" of writers and designers who've ruined the game over the years while he was gone, and he's unable to do anything about it.
Once the red hyrda has a foothold there is no getting rid of it unless you have the fighting spirit of a failed painter from Austria. Even then they won't let you do it and drag your name through the mud. Welcome to hell
Wow! It is sad to see how many people are burnt out and sour in every comment section. Blizzard really fucked us and themselves in Shadowlands huh? Feelsbadman
Tbf the fkn games been out for 2 decades...it just needs to die already. It's been milked to the high heavens. There needs to be a new ip because Diablo & Wow ain't it anymore.
it wasn't just shadowlands, it's the direction of the game since then. The people that made vanilla, tbc and wrath are not working there anymore, or if they are it's very few. The direction of the game is something I'd see out of a My little pony episode and they've put more focused on how people see blizzard, instead of what blizzard produces. It isn't the same company it once was. Most of the people see that and have moved on.
No. Blizzard killed their game when they deleted all content with cataclysm and mist of pandaria. Only tryhard shills followed the game till then because real OG players left after the 20 downgrades of systems. Now they get no new cannon fodder player to sustain so they backtrack. Like the community did not told them for 12 years. Dead corpse that only gets revived at wow2
It annoys me to hear him say "What do the team/artists want to build". Fuck them, we want the games Metzen used to make, you tell them what to build. what they have been building for the last 10 years has just been awful and gets worse with each expansion.
It's a creative industry, if people don't care about what they're making they won't donit well. The actual solution is getting a new team that is on board with the vision
I believe we are going to be getting Chris Metzen in the story but he's talking about the little nuances and little side story themes will be reflections of what the artists want to make. That's a good thing. You never want artists making things they don't want to make.
@@sabershark3102 Kind of, right? I do think that people there need to remember they're at work, following instructions. I think letting them do what they want is a major mistake. They can express themselves in their own time. On company time, you get paid to do what the boss tells you. But I think this company, whoever they are now - not Blizzard that's for sure - is too far gone.
Who cares about story in WoW? Dragonflight was an excellent expansion from the standpoint of someone who actually plays the game instead of watching lore videos on UA-cam.
Feeling that the main reason they hired Chris back on was mostly for the positive PR when the game was crashing to reel some of the population back in. Sounds like they already had things planned and didn't give him a lot of wiggle room to put many of his ideas in. He explaine it well, but just doesn't seem completely confident on this. Hopefully I'm wrong and this turns out great.
War Within already has some dragonflight vibes with Dagran, Moira and Magni. Bitch King Anduin still suffers from chronic Light withdrawal and Alleria will be the next Tyrande. These guys have a huge cast of characters to make a good story but it just ends up being a family drama show.
is Alleria racist and no-nonsense? because if she ain't, she ain't no Tyrande. if she does not refer to some non-elf as an "outlander" at least once, she ain't no Tyrande. if she does not call a non-elf an impure mongrel to his/her face at least once, she ain't no Tyrande. if she is not fanatically religious in her devotion to whatever pos deity the high/blood elves worship, then she. ain't. no. Tyrande.
I think its fine for side quests stories, I say thats the area's where the writers can go crazy and do whatever they want, but the main story / campaign leave it to chris.

Saved? The expansion hasn't even been out for a day. Actually it's not even fully out yet. Nothing has been saved, they're still trying to squeeze blood from a stone. Milk every last cent no matter what. Some new small talent trees full of random procs and a slightly better narrative aren't saving anything so long as the decision making process and mentality behind game design don't drastically change.
@@Spiresbeyond For starters the entire way the game is monetized is fucked. First you have to buy the game/expansion and then pay a monthly sub. On top of that there is an in game cash shop and a real money currency with the token. Which they then added into the Classic version. In addition to that Character Services also cost money and are overpriced. If your server dies, which is entirely outside of player control and thus falls on Blizzard's shoulders, you have to pay Blizz a not small amount of money per character to transfer. This fact is made worse by Blizzard not merging realms as often as needed. On top of all that after they pissed away every last bit of good will and fan loyalty and knew they had to deliver something big to make up for it and they come up with the asinine Early Access bullshit. I think that speaks volumes about their perspective of the game and how they view their players/customers. Furthermore raid and dungeon design need fundamental updates. Why is such a large amount of time spent walking in instances when the reason everyone does them is for the encounters? Why are 3rd party addons like DBM/Weak Auras essentially mandatory? Why are so many fights designed around mechanics that wipe the entire group if a single person makes a single mistake? I also feel class design is too shallow. So many talents are so basic/simple they could be baked into the spec and replaced with things that add depth/complexity/skill expression. Like 5/10% to whatever, increased random chance of thing, etc. Those are not interesting or engaging. The heroic talents are a good example of this. Thematically some of them are cool but almost all of them have zero depth to them due to being random procs with zero/very little player control. It's just more azerite traits. The regular talents are also set up in a way that give an illusion of choice in most cases. The only real choice in nearly every tree is "single target or aoe"? Finally as a broader example there are many instances where it feels like the mentality behind game design is focused on limiting players in some capacity or simply wasting their time. They've made some strides here with the account wide changes but it still feels in many instances they want to limit/control how players can interact with the game to a much too high degree. These are just off the top of my head and I hadn't even thought about PVP but there's serious issues there too. Oh and I just remembered how badly QA and Customer Support have been absolutely gutted over the years. I am sure I could write a full length essay on everything wrong with the game and how a great deal of it came about as result of ignoring player feedback. I am also sure if I spent 2-3 hours thinking about it I could at least come up with a few viable solutions/suggestions but I just don't feel like putting that time and effort into WoW especially when the devs won't even attempt addressing most of this. Even this comment feels like too much effort from me but I suppose this EA bullshit re-ignited my anger at Blizz. This shit is not isolated to WoW either. I'd rather just play games that don't try to milk me for every cent and are more concerned about good game play as opposed to pleasing shareholders to the extreme. Like compare From Software games, or Rockstar, or any first party Nintendo or Sony titles to Blizzard's games. It fucking laughable how massive the difference in quality is in games like WoW and Overwatch compared to games like RDR2, Elden Ring, Legend of Zelda or God of War. That's the standard Blizz used to be at, and not just for WoW.

Illidan was a simp on W3 but he was at his best on Legion. He never even saw Tyrande or spoke to her, he just got to work and his dialogue was peak. His only final words for Tyrande when he stayed back at the seat of the pantheon were basically ''Tyrande, take care of my brother, I have things to do'' Illidan is one of the only characters that has improved over the years since his OG days.
He wasn't really a simp. He was well written but it seems that you have difficulties understanding how he could feel after 10000 years of imprisonment, being freed by one he fell in love with (she had to massacre/betray Wardens, who were her people too). Then he wasn't all about Tyrande, he was all about power/destroying Legion/Lich King. And in War3 he also left Tyrande in his brother's care.
Illidian in Legion was just Kerrigan 2 : Electric Bogaloo. Absolutely cringe retcon. Illidan pre-retcon, even with his "tuhrrrawnduh" fixation, was still a far more interesting character than the self righteous purple demonic saviour they turned him into over the course of just one expansion's plot development (even if the "I am my scars" line, by itself, was badass).
@@lionart5230 He was imprisoned because he tried to use a power to fight the Legion and his brother didn't like it then the woman she loved cucked him with that same brother while Illidan endured a 10.000 years torment for her. @@tiffles3890 He's still the same character, a person willing to do whatever he needs to do to achieve his goal no matter who is against him or who tells him he's wrong. Please explain to me how is he so different from W3 or how he was ''retconed'' other than not being hyper fixated in simping over Tyrande.
Hopefully they won’t need to resolve things. Or at least it won’t matter if they don’t. I’m glad people are talking about WoW 2 more. WoW has become a cesspit of random 15 year old content next to more modern and flashy looking content. A reset is way overdue, I really hope blizzard has at least started planning for that.

Hot take. Wow was never that good. It was only good back then because people didn't know better and view it from the lens of nostalgia. Majority of people like this are in their mid 30s now with shit job and no friends reminiscing about times they were teens playing games without care in the world.
Cataclysm had an amazing story and tons of brand new content. Badass villains, dragons, destruction of the world and new quest lines, new race, two raids on launch... Hard to beat this expansion, maybe legion had a comparable amount of content on launch, as eacu class had its own thing. Other than that nothing really comes close.

bro, Metzen said they have plans/are working on plans for up till patch 17.0, if you think they'll ever make WoW 2 just so that they lose people, lol :)))) they won't make WoW 2 when they have 7+ million people playing now, either Retail / Classic / Cata... they just won't, why spend hundreds of millions of USD, maybe even 500 million cuz you can't just launch WoW 2 with like 4 zones... you think Microsoft gonna spend half a billion for MAYBE a chance on something, when they can continue WoW in its current form while making billions yearly? lol
Honestly, WoW was never the same after Wrath of the Lich King. They started dumbing down the gameplay, and server communities basically died with the introduction of cross-realm features. Remember when getting epic gear actually meant something? Post-WotLK, they just handed that stuff out like candy. And don’t even get me started on the lore. Arthas was an epic villain, but after him, the story just got messy with all the retcons and weaker villains. Plus, the game became way too focused on microtransactions and casual content. Wrath was the last time WoW felt like a real adventure. Everything after just didn’t hit the same.
There’s way to many progression systems. Raids feel meaningless and unfulfilling bc u can just farm the gear through mythic+… Classes feel bloated and daunting to start Wow core gameplay sucks and they are doing nothing to fix it this expansion. Feels like an ARPG game not a MMORPG
How can you even say gameplay is dumbed. It is like 86345x difficult than pre cata version of the game. I played the classic. People were talking to each other in first 2 weeks then it all stopped. Like all the things to make people talk with each other was there, it was the exact replika of vanilla wow but yeah nobody talked with each other. It is not 2004 anymore it is 2024 deal with it. Getting epic gear meaning something is a stupid point. It was colors back then, it is numbers right now. Ilvl replaced colors but they are literally the same. Go ahead and pretend numbers are colors then you will be happy. Storywise yes Arthas was cool but pre cata all story occurred randomly. They didn't have any continuation. Like why did c'thun attacked after we defeat ragnaros? Dude attack a few weeks early while azerothians dealing with ragnaros half a world away and you will ass fuck whole kalimdor. Why did lich king decided to wake up after we are done at outland? Just wake up a few months early and conquer all azeroth anyone who is competent is on another planet 😂 post-cata though story was continuous end of an expac caused the start of the next expac. Without one, other could not happen. It is not the game, it is you. You are burned out from the game which is ok you cant play same shit 20 years straight. It is ok to take a break or quit. I played dota 2 for more than 7000+ hours then i was done with it at some point and quit. It was not because of game design i just got overwhelmed from playing too much. But i dont cry over it
At this point i seriously would want a do-over of Warcraft from the End of Warcraft 3. Some of these complaints we're made during WotLK too. Specifically about dumbed down content and free epix. However, you are completely correct about server community. Between that and LFG, the heart and soul of WoW as an emergent social experience died real fast once those features were launched.
Outside of the lackluster story, dragonflight was An awesome feature dense expansion, with nearly no narrowed power or overt tedious grinds. By season 3 there was like 15 methods of getting decent gear.
3:33 @Asmongoldtv that line was a reference and inside joke for something Scott has jokingly said about Khadgar for years on his podcast. He’s not being serious. He has called Khadgar the “shit wizard.” In context, it was funny.

Learn so many lessons and suffer through so much I hope they continue with his character development. The Saurfang Saga was such a peak for me. I still go back to this day and watch the Mak gorah cinematic and I just have to log into wow and experience the game again to satisfy me.
Just because some people memed on Taurens doesn't make Taurens the same as Vulpera. Taurens literally became part of the Horde in WC3. They were always going to be a playable race.
not to mention that taurens are cool and vulperas are not. tauren ooze primal wild brutality soothed by the gentle giant concept, whereas vulpera instills cringe in my very core from the ground up (and it doesn't go very far up because its just a gnome in a furry suit). "heu heu milk jokes" are the worst you'll hear about taurens, whereas when you think of vulpera, likely one of the first images that spring into your imagination is some cringe deviant art sexualized furry character with a gay twist or some other degenerate undertone.
i guarantee you Chris Metzen had no say in Tirions death ,his main was a paladin back in the days and something tells me he has no say in the war within and he is just a PR stunt .

An Arc that spans multiple expansions. Story wise I believe Metzon will do his best to tie all the plot threads together the problem is will the higher ups let him do it.
It all boils down to how well TWW will do. Personally I 've already seen some 80s running around (crazy bastards, they had premapped everything in beta) and in general the new areas are filled to the brim with people. So, sales-wise it must have done at least decently. At lvl 74 I 've already witnessed a complete sub-story start to finish, it was poignant, it was melancholic and you had the feeling your actions mattered. We 'll see down the road how it goes. My extremely first impressions are very cautiously on the optimistic side of things, *so far* .

More that he can’t change much at this stage for War Within. By the time he got involved, most of the story had probably already been written with cinematics and quest design well underway. There’s only so much someone can do at that stage without completely de-railing the development process which can be death in a live service like WoW that demands a steady supply of content.
Initially I was like okay Metzen sell me on this. You're back, you're gonna un-pussify WoW, you're gonna come in and tell a story people can give a shit about without Alexstrasza talking about her feelings or whatever the fuck. Then he started talking about the "democratization" of the writers room, and I immediately lost 90% of my interest, because I can just envision what the internals of that company look like. They're building more of the same garbage pussy shit that they made with Shadowlands and Dragonflight, and while I'm sure Metzen was able to inject some input and maybe even steer the overall direction of the ship... I'm equally as sure that the smaller scale decisions and the low level designs (things like quest writing and side characters) are still firmly in the hands of the people who have been running the story for the past three expansions. The trash. At this point, I'm no longer on the fence. If Metzen had said the right things here, I would've bought War Within sight unseen. But as is? I'm gonna wait for a few weeks and try to get a feel for what the direction of the story is through places like this channel. If the verdict is that it's still the same woke touchy feely shit, then my sub will remain inactive. I'd love to come back and play WoW again but on principle I don't want to give money to another effeminate trashfire.
I can imagine the "democratization" looks something like 9 liberal white women, 2 trans dudes, and Chris Metzen in one room. He gets outvoted on every single thing and has no power.
It goes back to the point of sincerity in media. So many 'modern' works play it safe, they go through the motions of checking boxes they think need to be checked, and wonder why no one resonates with the result. Because there isn't an authentic basis within it TO resonate with. As a lifelong artist, I can say: you really do pour your soul into things you create from the heart. And putting a part of yourself out there, not getting a positive reception can be wounding. But that's a matter of misplaced expectations - just like not everyone's gonna like you, not everyone's gonna like your authentic works either. And there's a lot of posers in 'creative' spaces lately that fail to respect that, and aren't ready for it, so they just make topical crap they're not actually invested in so they don't get hurt. Big surprise, no one else will be invested in such works either.

It's been mention before, but. As someone who cares a lot about the story, the roleplay. The amount of damage done to the world in BFA, Shadowlands and to a far lesser extent Dragonflight, is simply irreparable. The game needed a reset, a massive 50y gap for the world to kind of deal with what's happened, restore Lorderon, Gilneas as permanent alliance/forsaken cities. So much of the old world just sits completely destroyed as we move onto the new shiny thing. They needed to take a step back before jumping into the new thing, at least for me to be interested in the game again.
Im the same as you but to me BfA, Shadowlands and Dragonflight never existed and the story of WoW ended with the Wrath of the Lich King everything after that is just pure fanfic full of non sense and just insulting the fans
@@khebre6032 IMHO that's just kind of a bad take... We needed to deal with Deathwing and the legion. Arthas and Illidan were just their goons. And the old gods stuff in Pandaria is absolutely ace.
The only way to reset the game is for us to realise that the whole experience up until now was actually us still being stuck in Frostmourne. We then manage to escape but The Lich King kills us this time. He revives us as DKs but at some point in the game we are given the choice to either stay with The Scourge or go back to Alliance or Horde. Then, we realise that the Scourge is the 3rd faction.
"We've been flyin, what does that mean what do we do?" His takeaway from a full price mmo game expansion was you could fly. Not the villians, not the locale, not the quests and the instances and the journey they were supposed to cultivate... Fascinating stuff.
Khadgar may not have the destructive power that Jaina or Kael'thas has but he is much more versatile and knowledgable and that is actually what a wizard is about. Others are just glorified mages like the ones in every guild.

Leader of the horde elves of dalaran, folds to garrosh’s demands, let’s innocent people get brutally massacred in what’s supposed to be a neutral city and now we see him in Orgrimmar at the trading post sending jaina gifts and apology letters 😂 just sad
The reference Scott is making comes from some episodes of his podcast. It’s an inside joke.
bruh this is a pretty bad synopsis this is like saying hitler was a misunderstood painter who was wronged then decided to make a war to create a world thats better.

How would you change it?

Some of these complaints we're made during WotLK too. Specifically about dumbed down content and free epix.
However, you are completely correct about server community. Between that and LFG, the heart and soul of WoW as an emergent social experience died real fast once those features were launched.

@@kingkarlito I agree 100% but there is definately a crossover between feminine influence and bad story, alot of dragonflight would have been great if they didnt treat it like a disney movie. Chris Metzen's art in the warcraft 2 book that came with the game was my favorite thing ever as a kid. Unbelievably powerful, badass and expressive art.
So I'm lvl 80 and have done almost all of the main story quests and without spoilers I'll say this: It's still the Girlboss show. 100%. The amount of male cuckery in this expansion puts Dragonflight to shame. Men are either killed off left and right, or made into villains so a girlboss can come forward. What content did you play in DF?
My heart sank when metzen referred to wow as 'the product' 4:55
So already confirmed he is not changing the writing process, so the story will continue to be convoluted garbage.
More that he can’t change much at this stage for War Within. By the time he got involved, most of the story had probably already been written with cinematics and quest design well underway. There’s only so much someone can do at that stage without completely de-railing the development process which can be death in a live service like WoW that demands a steady supply of content.
seeing scott johnson and metzen in the same video is so 2007-8 nostalgia for me
Initially I was like okay Metzen sell me on this.
Good call, War Within is the wokest story yet. A literal fish market.
