It's actually a 6V53 Detroit you have there. 3/71 on the governor housing tag is date of manufacture. DWLS stands for Dual weight, limiting speed governor as there are a few different types depending on the application.
It would be good to check the rack and be sure no injectors are stuck before getting it running, make sure the emergency stop flap isn't tripped either. Also check the travel and movement of the engine stop cable to the top of of the governor housing that it's fully releasing.
Awesome! Thank you for the info. We were wondering and been search online trying to find out everything We can. Never tore into one of these engines before. Definitely going to check all those before we do any more.
Nice to find one of those with a Detroit and air brakes. Most were gas/hydraulic and not worth messing with. Nice truck!
Thank you! It’s definitely an awesome find.
Glad to see you making a start on this great little truck.
Me too!
I have always loved these GM cabovers since I was a kid in the 60's. When I turned 16 I drove one with a small box on it delivering furniture part-time. I was lucky, man.
(The one I drove had the GMC gas V-6.)
Awesome!
Hi mate, yeah 6V53, identical to the one in my Ford Louisville and yes do not start it until you have checked the free movement of the rack and injectors. Rack rests at wide open throttle when not in use and will runaway unless free. Would be worth looking at Bus Grease Monkey on YT, he's a wealth of info on anything 2 stroke Detroit.
Awesome. Thanks for the info! Glad it didn’t start on us without knowing.
I just bought one for my channel. Mines a 366 gasser with a 4 speed
I'd love to hear this beauty run, it's been quite a while since I've heard anything smaller than a 4 71 Detroit.
6V 53 different valve covers from 71 series
I can tell you two are rookies at trying to start a diesel that has been sitting for a long time. 20:21
🤔
Well ⁉️1973 or 1963 ⁉️
