  • See this truck go from being towed out of the barn it was stored in for 25 years to my shop at Gaspers Automotive Restoration and be brought back to life. Topics include getting the engine checked out and running, patina and paint discussion for preservation, maintenance on the chassis with greasing and more. This is Hartford engine 8 car 41 that was in service until it was sold in 1974 to a private owner. Now it is owned by me and I look forward to taking care of it for a long time.

I spent 23 years of my life in the fire service in California. Seeing these old engines get rescued warms this old engine captain’s heart.

From a 70 year old retired mechanic and also a retired fire fighter I started turning bolts in 1969 and have greased my share of king pins, one trick that my first boss showed me that often when you have a kingpin that part of it won’t take grease take a 2# hammer and give the area not taking grease a good whack

Thank you for the video. I joined my Vol. Fire Drpt. in 1964. The company was formed in 1928. When I joined in 1964 the Company still had their very first new purchased 1945 Mack which I rode & fought fires with. I became the Fire Chief in 1983 and I sure wish that we had your knowledge & experience with old engine

LaFrance sure knew how to build them. Ask Jay Leno. His 1941 LaFrance was a Hollywood prop for years, then sat outside for many years. Amazing!

Retired volunteer fire capt. here from Lakeshore V.F.D. in Lake County, northern California. We still have the first new factory engine our dept. bought (rather than homemade): 1941 LaFrance, 750 GPM pumper. Big flat head V-12 powered, also, similar to yours, has dual ignition, one set of 12 plugs run on the ignition distributor, the other on a magneto. In 1959, a propane delivery truck pulled out of the plant after filling up, forgot to un hook the filler line, resulting a massive fire fed by a 10,000 gallon propane tank, with heat impinging on a second tank nearby. The guys set up the LaFrance with their big 750 GPM deck gun, and pumped continuously for almost 48 hours. Changed the engine oil while pumping...had one guy underneath draining, and another guy on top pouring in fresh oil. In the 90's the board of directors removed it from service, and were going to sell it....so I got a bunch of volunteers together, went to board meeting, and convinced them to give the truck to the firemen's association. Happy to say we still have it.

lol . . . . I played the video at double speed for the first 8-1/2 mins and it looked closer to normal speed of people doing things . . . . lol
I love to see such old vintage vehicles in such condition. Most Firetrucks remain in great shape due to their lifestyle, but this era in truck building being so well preserved is just awesome. Thank you for sharing, enjoyed the sights very much.

They make a tool for stubborn grease fittings that you fill with light oil and hit it with a hammer to push fluid through. Once it’s clean it will usually take grease. Also I love my Milwaukee m18 grease gun

Give it a ground-up nut-and-bolt restoration with new original style repaint. To drive it around with a dry radiator and say you want to keep it 'original' means you want to be cheap and hope it doesn't break. Good luck. Put it back in the barn.

1930 ALF, chain drive in the rear, (like the old Macks) with a positive displacement gear pump. Fastest drafting engine at the firemans fairs!!! :)

Patina? You never see that on an in-service fire truck. When you get back from a run, you reload the hose, wash and polish all the bright work, and rinse off the hose, then hang it in the hose tower to dry. BTW, standard lengths of hose are 50', and it is loaded in the hose bed on edge, in an accordion fashion. Hose is rolled like the hose you unloaded when it is picked up after a fire or other use. Rolled like this makes it reasonable for a man to hoist up and carry it on a shoulder.

You need to turn the wheels all the way to one side then pump the grease in turn the wheels a little and pump some more do this till the wheels are turned all the way to the other side that way the kingpin will not have grease in one spot

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 2 роки тому

... on these old things you lube the front end with the vehicle in the air. That way the grease flows into all the spaces without any weight squishing it elsewhere.

I have a 1929 ALF in near original condition, that started life in Wilton Ct. In those days the GMC (commercial chassis) was actually a Buick Touring car in its size class, so it has a Buick Master 6 Cylinder engine. (around 300 cu in) Mine was the first with full pressure lube, overhead valves, and roller lifters. It has a single points style ignition. Looking for a gas cap, if you know of any. Recalling about a 2" fine machine thread.

Hi! We have a 1931 American La France Type 233 ladder truck here in the Philippines, and were wondering if we could get some technical assistance from you.
Currently watching you restoration videos to give us insight on how to properly address ours while we''re still collecting funds for restoration. Cheers!

Not sure, but some of those odd grease style fitting actually could be oil fittings and not meant for grease.

Hello, we have a 1927 American LaFrance. Looks like the same engine ours. Our starter is on the other side. On ours the distributor only fires the 6 plugs on the side of the head. Our magneto has 12 lead outs and it fires the plugs in the top of the heads. There is a switch that we can switch from distributor- Mag or both. Our steering is on the opposite side too. Is your differential intergalactic with the transmission. Ours is cast out of solid brass.

    When you lubricated those king
pins you forgot 1 key thing you are supposed to always do and thats jack up the front of that vehicle and have someone turn the steering wheel so grease gets into those bearings and also into the bushings evenly

Where is the best place to find tires? I have a 1929 American LaFrance and the tire size is 7.50-24 for the front and 9.00-24 for the rear. I’m having a hard time finding a tire that will fit. Also what is the starting process? I’m not sure on how to turn the engine over. The hand crank works and the engine is not locked up. However I could be missing the ignition switch on the dashboard.
    Thank you in advance

Is that still the Mercedes Simplex based engine, whose origins may go back as far as 1907? I think they may have used this up until they introduced their V12 engine designed by Seagrave in the mid 1930's.
