    As the singing of these Psalms dwindled so has wickedness, selfishness and evil vices heightened and multiplied. Peace and joy leaving mankind.

    I have NO idea why I am commenting as Nelson Sumbane, when in fact I am Peter Black! I am Cathedral Organist and Choirmaster at Kimberley Cathedral in South Africa. I will be playing Guildford's recording of Psalm 27 to my Choir this week as an example of thoughtful and beautifully shaped psalm singing. How wonderful that we have this resource!

      When in South Africa, Nelson is a perfect alias. Sumbane could be a misspelling of sun-burnt, seeing you are not actually black.

      +Peter Thank you for leading others into beauty and majesty. You are an example of how to decide (Kierkegaard said that there is 'power' in a decision) to bring into our world the best that is. Art is art when it 'ennobles,' (Aristotle). Thank you for being part of that great heritage that lifts into light. There is a truth in it that is nowhere else.

      I hope you don't mind sharing the title of Best Choir with King's College (Cambridge). Because there's no tiebreaker. KCC and GCC are co-champions, like what happened in the national spelling bee a couple of times.
      Speaking of spelling, I f-e-r-v-e-n-t-l-y (fervent is my favorite word) love traditional English choral and organ music.

      @@grievinggeekclairedixon3445 I'd argue in favour of St John's under Guest. The psalm reading of that era was _otherworldly_

If you can, please develop this teaching so that we can learn this beautiful sung versions, please put links so that we can move to them quickly - I like to use psalms in my private daily devotions, especially the short holy psalms such as Psalm 8 Psalm 23 Psalm 100, and I would like to sing them according to this holy melodies. Thank you and God bless you for this gift amen

    I am not very musical but have been attending a church which is one of the few left that has a non-choral, sung Evensong, where the congregation sings the service from a pointing sheet. (Sadly rarely attended by more than a dozen or so). I have been listening to these videos to pick up some of the tunes and phrasing.

    • @ArchivesofSound
      @ArchivesofSound  8 років тому +1

      +Londonfogey Bear in mind that the pointing used at Guildford at the time these recordings were made was that of the old St Paul's Cathedral psalter, which may not coincide with the point used at your church today.

    • @grievinggeekclairedixon3445
      @grievinggeekclairedixon3445 3 роки тому

      No choir at your Evensong? That's too bad. Evensong is not the same without a choir. I know because I've attended lots of Evensong services (before COVID).

    This is why I love the Anglican Church so much. IMO the Anglican chants run rings around RC Church chants. After I listen to your playlist,
    I'm also looking for a video of psalm 84 (set to music by Jerome Webster Meachem). Do you know of any? Can you find a UA-cam video of it for me, please? Thank you in advance.

    some roughness there but barry rose is a staggering musician. as of course, are the boys here. just absurd quality - this matters

    • @ArchivesofSound
      @ArchivesofSound  8 років тому +4

      It's true that not every performance reaches perfection but these are "live" recordings. There are even occasional mistakes (!) that can't be edited out, as they would be for a commercial recording. But the point of this archive is to present an accurate picture of how it really was from day to day.

    • @MrJasonfranks
      @MrJasonfranks 8 років тому +2

      totally accept that. this is the highest quality of musicianship you're going to find, recorded or not. more: but for the precision herein, wouldn't have had the early music brigade (albeit they wrongly thought their performance was a reaction to this - in fact, a continuation). which matters.

    • @ArchivesofSound
      @ArchivesofSound  8 років тому +2

      That's a perceptive remark, considering the personnel involved. There was some "crossover" - one of Alfred Deller's sons was a bass at Guildford in those days and one of the tenors, Robin Doveton, was also a member of The Scholars, whose repertoire included "early music". And Barry used to share a flat with Bruno Turner... (Or so he claims!)

    • @grievinggeekclairedixon3445
