So when we had a well we also would not have water when the power went out. We put in an artisan well. My husband dug a hole with a backhoe and put in a galvanized culvert with holes put in it. We sunk it into the hole and put the dirt back around it. Had a hand pump put in like in the old days. We covered and placed a ornamental wishing well over the top so no one knew it was there. Was just a extra security to have. Same good clean water as our house well. Hope this helps someone, if you don't have to go to deep for water. God bless
As a person who has tried to heat the house with a fireplace during winter...I can say you will end up buying an insert to heat your house....I got tired of the cold, we ended up all sleeping in the living room...I had a family of 5 at the time...but didn't need to be that close....we ended up at the library alot, because it was warm there..watching TV with your coat on is not comfortable....we ended up with lots of electric heaters...do check out wood burning insert fire places that connects to you existing vents and lines....that was the voice of experience!!!!

I am a little behind on this but took myself to Sam's Club today. I was looking for 2 things this book and something for Christmas. The second thing was gone BUT... I cannot thank you enough. In searching for a source where I could buy the book used I came across the author's website SurvivalBlog.com. My sister and I plan on buying a homestead together and moving out of CA (can't wait). We've been researching different areas and making a prioritized list of what we want in a homestead. SurvivalBlog.com is a wealth of information. BTW I bought this book & 2 more by him. Again, thanks!
@@midlifehousewifelife6092 Thanks, we'll keep that in mind. It's going to be awhile before we can move. I've been looking in Northeast Arkansas and western Kentucky just to get a feel for what the properties are like. I'm working on talking Sis into Kentucky. It would be nice to move where there are people we know so we could have some help with a project if we needed it and to be able to return the favor.
I bought the guide Heather reviewed and an ebook on relocating by the same author. The ebook was $10, both have lots of great information.
I hope you find what you're looking for, best wishes. And Happy Thanksgiving!!
