Not gonna lie, when I first saw the ad, I thought it was a bit suspicious.. this confirms that suspicion, thanks!
Years ago when Carla Emery was still living, I was part of a team that helped her edit and revise her 10th edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Living and while this project took over a year, all of the information was updated and all recipes tested and replaced if needed. She and her husband Don came here to MT, stayed with us and did a weekend seminar in our small town. Carla was a very nice lady and very laid back and very willing to share what she'd learned and was open to new information. The 10th edition was delayed after her death, some sort of legal issues between her family and publisher( I believe) Her book, is my go to first and foremost for most everything. Thank you for your review, it's always so discouraging when you spend good money and are disappointed in the product.
Thank you so much for sharing that. I have had the book for a few weeks now and had time to look into it further and am very happy with it
Very cool history and info!
Wow, that’s really neat, I bet you learned a lot from her !! To bad she didn’t have UA-cam back then, but at least her knowledge lives on and will be much needed in these days ahead.
Thanks for sharing your story !
Love Carla Emery's work💗
We’ve had this book for years and value it as a critical resource for those who like being prepared.
We too bought this book a few years Ago. Not worth it. Carla Emery s country living is Full of useful info. Thanks Heidi for the review
I have Carla Emerys book. Almost ought the original when she first advertised in Mother Earth always wished I had, The original was mimeographed and sent out in sections. my children were small and some nit born so money was tight. oh and I miss Fouch-o-matic off grid.
Thanks for the good info. We already have Carla’s book plus a few paper copies of ‘70s Mother Earth News. Good stuff.
I have Carla Emery's book too but, for the true lost ways nothing beats the old Foxfire books.
Thanks for the review. I was wondering about the book. I have The Country Living Book and find it has very good information I. it.
I purchased the Lost Ways also. I didn't get anything out of it either
Thank You! I bought The Encyclopedia of Country Living and saved some money while I was at it. ❤
Thank you for posting this. I have been wondering about the book.
Thanks, Heidi. I was planning on ordering The Lost Ways Book. Think I'll order "The Encyclopedia Of Country Living" instead. Blessings!
"God is good all the time"
What a wonderful intro.
I have a 50 year copy of the country living book. I always had my nose in that book. Hard to believe it’s 50 years old 😊
I have one, too. My mom bought it for me as a wedding present when I got married the first time in 1977. Such a friendly, helpful book!
What is the country living book? Is it by the same author as The Lost Ways?
@@susiethomas6909 "The Encyclopedia Of Country Living" by Carla Emery
I have one too. What a treasure. I was so excited about it when I was young. I learned so much from it. I had one of her very early ones but it got destroyed. The one I have now is from a subsequent printing, but still at least 40 years old.
Thank you so much for your review. I was about to buy The Lost Ways however you have turning me towards the correct path as I am not lost in my way anymore😊
I'm here because I was suspicious of the commercial I saw. You got a new subscriber. THANK YOU😁👍
Thank you so much for doing this review. I had seen it advertised and wondered if it was worth the money.
Thank you so much for doing this review! I was investigating weather to buy this book or not, glad I found your review!
Heidi, I agree, It wasn't worth the price..The money is better spent for the Country Living book.
Thank you for this honest review. I've seen the old ways book advertised here on UA-cam for over $100 and i was interested in it but now I'm thinking I'm glad i didn't invest in it.
$100?? Wow. Now they take the standard route for max price for off the cuff spending: $37. They all pull from the same playbook and it’s getting really tiresome.
I bought “The Lost Ways” and I agree, it has some good content but I was disappointed, especially for the price. I couldn’t find any reviews before I bought it, lesson learned, I’ll be more patient and find reviews before throwing my money out there! Thank you for your suggestions on the other books!
Most of what I see online is fake reviews which are advertisements with the same canned wording to pre-play before the author’s ad. Yuck.
I have the paper back, they refunded my money when I complained that it was not worth the money, this was a few years back. I've had the Carla Emery book for years and years. Thanks for the review
What good herbal book or books do you remember?
Was gifted Carla's book years ago when i was going to Eastern Europe as a missionary. The book has been with me for 30yrs and has such good information i even used it setting up a homestead when returning to the u.s. Thanks for the review. I'll save my money to spend on a good wild foraging Bible.
I so appreciate this review, Heidi! I agree with you: there's something shady going on, and I absolutely HATE the websites you are talking about; those with all the info SCREAMING at you and the one you have to keep scrolling through to get to the bottom to see the price. As soon as I see a page like that, my interest in the product is gone and I close it. I just don't trust those. A good product doesn't need an elaborate sales pitch, or a web page, or website to sell. I've added the Encyclopedia of Country Living to my wish list, thank you for the recommendation.
Hahaha. 😂 My copy is 5x7 paperback. Its very thin and NOTHING like what was claimed on the website. No herbs, (which I bought it for) no pemican. Boy I got robbed. Thanks Heidi, I had no idea there was so many books out there.
So yet another different version. I suspect some Chinese company is profiting off of these
Ugh I bought last night for that too and now Im looking up reviews and regretting it
Good work Heidi! I am an editor and publisher, and I feel aggravated about the books having different articles as well as ending abruptly and costly so much. They should at least have an alphabetical index at the back. I suspect the publisher is printing Lost Ways out on a laser printer or in some way that allows for moving articles around that would not be possible if printed with real ink on a huge press. Seems unprofessional. Thank you so much for doing all this work! And for the recommendation for the Country book instead!
All the time God is good.
DANG, The Country Living is HUGE!
Thanks Heidi ❤️
This was amazing. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the work you put into this video. You answered all the questions and even gave us a better idea of what we were looking for. Thank you so much. God bless you.
Thank you for your review. I, also, have had a difficult time finding a true review and not just another commercial. Keep up the good work; I really learn from your channel!
So true. And they all read the same words!
Thank you, Heidi! Have a beautiful day!
Thank you for the honest review, Heidi! I trust your recommendation. You do your due diligence, and it's very helpful to the rest of us!
👍 Danke fürs Hochladen!
👍 Thanks for uploading!
👍 Very good and beautiful, thank you!
Heidi, I don't think it was worth the money for" lost ways." We paid 48.00 for the soft cover. Thank you for you comments on this book
I also purchased The Lost Ways book. Not a good investment. The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies by Nicole Apelian is not bad though. Her book The Forager’s Guide to Wild Foods is actually a good one, with color photos. Would be better if it was region specific, but covers all of North America.
Thank you so much for the heads up! I had been thinking about getting the book, but I would either forget or wouldn't have the money. Well I believe things happen for a reason! So thank you! I will definitely look into the books you suggested. 💖
Great video. I paid $20 for the fourth edition of lost ways. I’m pretty happy with having it added to my collection of books. I do agree that we need multiple sources for information. Thanks for your recommendations!! Much appreciated. I always learn so much from your videos
Hello Heidi!!! Thank you for the review! I was searching reviews and saw you had one. Thanks for saving me
buying it! And a BIG THANK YOU for the links to Country living and the others. I need these books and I need them to be ACCURATE! God Bless You!!!
Thank you for the review! I have had this on my wishlist, but will now be taking it off!
I have Carla's original book, copied on paper of all sorts of colors and held together with rings. It's a fantastic book, full of information.
Very helpful, thank you and God bless
I had to resubscribe to your channel today! I have no idea how long I’ve been unsubscribed? I actually forgot about your channel until I came across this video while researching The Lost Ways. Thank you for sharing your information! Really appreciate it! Many blessings to you and your family!
Good morning Heidi. 🌄
I have another in this series, The Lost SuperFoods. It's not a terrible book but not worth the price, imo.
Dear Heidi!
I think it's a shame that the Fouch family has closed their UA-cam channel! I always had great pleasure when a new video was published, they were always very interesting and instructive!
Yes, they were great and I always loved their calm and pleasant approach to things. Esther is a very sweet lady.
@@RainCountryHomestead 👍
I've missed their videos! I hope they are well.
I just came across this video and am so grateful! I was on the fence about that book. (The cost was holding me back) I’m so glad you spoke so highly of the Country Living book. I paused the video, rushed over and bough it
Thank you for the review! That was so helpful. I’m am on the hunt for the most useful books to buy right now. I have many of your recommendations already on my wishlist and now I am really eager to buy the country living one. I didn’t realize it had that much info in it! Would love to hear more book reviews from you in the future. I am new to your channel and have been watching all your past videos to catch up!
How would you rank the most useful books?
Thank you! I've been wondering.
I ordered this book, haven't received it yet. But after reading the comments about this other book ... I now I have 2 books on the way! I guess I will read both 😂
Thank for this review. Very helpful!
Thanks for the review. I was curious about that book. I had one of the first edition of Carla Emery's book. It was always a prized book in my home. It was so worn I replaced it a few years ago.
Thank you! My hubby was asking about getting this book after seeing fb ads for it. I did not have a good feeling after looking into getting it and had not ordered it. I have read through the Country Living book (I got it from the library) and have that one on my wish list.
Thank you for such a great review on these books. Will be getting the Country living book. Love your channel.
Thanks Heidi, for the review. We Always try to be frugal with what little money we have and appreciate your information.
Thank you for an excellent review!!!
If I could only have one book, it would be Carla Emery's book. I remember seeing her ads in Organic Gardening magazine. I love the way her book is layed out. It is easy to find what I am looking for. I love the grey marks on the outside of the pages for the sections. And it is fun to read.
Excellent information! Thank you!
I actually went ahead and got the country living book I love it Heidi! once again a great video and we really appreciate you here in this household! God is good all the time!
Thank You!. You are the real thing for information on country living.
Thanks so much for doing this book review. I've been curious since you mentioned it a few videos back and thanks for saving me from potential scammers here. The encyclopedia of country living is an awesome suggestion! Have a blessed day 🦋
Thank you for the review most helpful in helping me decide. I have numerous herb books.
Very interesting. Thanks for this info!
Thank you so much!!! This is excellent info, comparing the books with the time you put in. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! I had a few that got angry because I did not read every single word in each book but good grief, I read enough to be able to tell they were VERY different! haha
Thank you for this review!
Thanks for the heads up. Take care.
Thank you for the review! I have the carla emery book and it is a very common sense book and I really like it too
I totally agree, Heidi! I bought the No Grid Survival Projects book after seeing the infomercial on YT mult times. I was planning on buying the Lost Ways book next, which I had also seen pop up often. I became very suspicious after the first book cost so much plus shipping and handling AND it took a while to get here. I went to Amazon & looked up both books & found them with a variety of prices & name variations. The one thing that was constant was that although the people in the infomercials claimed to be the authors, Claude Davis’ name was on every one. As for the herbs I have so many books already & knowledge I’m returning to after being on the fringe for several years. Plus the OLD Foxfire books of the early ‘70s. I’ll definitely get the Country Living book and be done with it! Thanks for drawing my attention to it.
Thank you Heidi!
Awesome ty for this review and the recommendation! I have the country living book and you just added value to it!
Thank you sis, I have the book in question. I am going to order the $21 book. Every prepper/homesteader should have a book shelf of books, We do in my off, dinning room and in my wifes office and sewing room.
I agree. I also have the country living and the herb books. Glad to know I don’t have to duplicate my purchases.
Thanks for the info. Happy Easter.
Thank you!
Such great information, thank you!
I needed a new copy of the encyclopedia of country living, mines 36yrs old and ragged. Its a great book and a true encyclopedia.
Thanks, great info!
Thank you thank you. I noemally but all books you recommend, but you did say to give you time to review, and I did listen after seeing the price on it. You are amazing and your honesty is welcome.
Thank you I needed this review, I’ve been contemplating on purchasing the book
Ty for sharing the information! I did not know that there was more than one book!!!
My biggest problem with The Lost Ways book was that there wasn't much detail, everything was way too generalized. It tells you what you need to do, but not how to do it. Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living is also my "go to" book for anything and everything I need to know. It covers almost everything needed to know in great detail and everything written is a "tried and true" method.
Does it talk about canning and jarring ?
Thanks for the review about The Lost Ways. I have wondered many times if it would be worth purchasing. I love the Country Living book. It has gone through many evolutions over the years as Carla added more and more new information. I read one of the earlier versions almost cover to cover about 40 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also have the newer more complete version (which I haven't read cover to cover).
Thank you for the honest information!!! I think you just saved me $100!!
Thank you for this video. I was wondering about this book.
Forever I will be looking for The Lost Ways first edition in old book collections. I have been buying any of these types of books that I see at garage sales. I have already found some very helpful ones. The Amish store has so many but the problem is once they sell it they very seldom replace it. Making it difficult to save up to buy!
Thank you, I've seen people say that these were mimeographed articles from other sources, like a collection of articles just put together.
Thank you for a very in-depth review. Your the first review I checked out on this book , I’ll definitely be checking out the “Country Living “ and the other herb books ,Merry Christmas and Happy New Years 😊
Thanks Heidi, in Oz here. Thanks for the heads up. Was asking family for the Lost Ways, but I saw this just in time to edit my post to them…Carla Emery it is!
thanks!
Thanks for your review.
I was just about to order the hardback as I came across your article first. God gives me another head's up, praise the Almighty Father above.
I think that I'll go with the other book that you mentioned on country living.
Thanks again and God bless you always.
B. Temple
Great info., thanks!
Thank you
Thank you.
Thanks Heidi. I've wondered about that Lost Ways book. I have Carla's book and a few others I enjoy. So, your review was very helpful! I'll save some money.
thank you very much for doing this review.
Great video! I wish I’d seen it before buying the book, but I purchased both titles. Thank you!
Debbie-Texas. I donot have the lost ways book. But the first homesteading type of book we bought years ago was Carla Emerys. Country Living. We love it. Thanks
I baught it last year I've just glanced through it... Thanks for sharing Heidi value your opinion God bless you both and your family...
Good morning! :D Thanks for the review.
Really glad you mentioned the other 3 books!!! Literally just bought all 3, 😂!
Had been thinking of of buying "The Lost Ways" book, but wanted a good opinion on it. Used to know quite a bit, not as much anymore, 😂
Thank you!!!
Instant Subscription!!!
💖 thanks Heidi!
Nice Heidi! Very valuable info! Thank you so much! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
Brilliant. They almost got me on this purchase. Thanks Heidi.
Thank you for the review, I almost bought that book a year ago but changed my mind .... glad I did.
I recently got the Country Living book! I’m so glad I made the right choice!!
I'm just going to the local bookstore and picking something up.
My most favorite collection is the complete set of Foxfire books, also the other books from this Publisher. And also have a cover all book from the early 1900's (medical ailments/cures, plants, how to build/use items, butchering, farm animals, etc. I love and have used these a lot. 👍 God Bless you and your family
Seemed like the foxfire books were more of interviews of people rather than complete 'how to'
For me my go to book's are the fox fire series
Thanks for the review Heidi, I have thought about ordering this book but the more I think about it I think I will stick with my FoxFire books . Every thing and more is in the Fox Fire books. If you haven't read them yet I highly recommend you do , they are a great source of information for homesteaders. Many Blessings !
Thank you for sharing about these books.
