    Thanks, funny thing is I pestered the gun shop owner over a period of weeks when visiting. In the end as he knew us as good customers, he said here take it for the afternoon and make a choice buy it or stop pestering! Well a quick trip to some choice bunny areas and my first free standing opportunity came around 70m mark. I’m saying no way my mates going you can do it have a go. Cross hair s doing repeated left to rights over his head and bang….he jumped into the air and dropped dead with a shot right through the crown. It wasn’t me it was that damned Hornet so I bought it and loved it ever since

      What a great shop owner! Can't imagine many that would allow a customer (even a trusted one) to take the rifle out for a test shoot. It really is a great round. One that has been around for many years. It seems to be in that sweet spot between rimfires and centerfires. Glad you got your hands on one!

    I bought my first two .22 hornets in 1972, a rifle and a pistol, single shot Navy Arms replicas, rolling block actions, and my 3rd in 1973, an H&R Topper Handi-rifle single shot, center break, with a 20 gauge shotgun companion barrel. Hundreds of rounds each in the rifles when ammo was dang near free, compared to now. The pistol? Fun to shoot, but we were after jack rabbits at 100 plus yards.

I bought it to retire my 22 Magnum. The Hornet puts the 22Mag to shame in every way. I dont push it past 150 yards though. I`ve got other rifles that pick up where the Hornet ends. I like the Hornet round because its reloadable, cheap to shoot, and a hell of alotta fun. Not a better rifle for the money. I mounted a Burris 4.5x15-50 Signature HD on my Hornet. CZ OEM rings. • @texmexshoots
      @texmexshoots  2 роки тому +2

      Not at all, it is a fair question. I tend to really choke up on my rifles with scopes. By that I mean that I tend to like my cheek weld to be far up on the buttstock. Due to that, the eye relief I need to get a good view through my scope usually requires it to be mounted forward. Usually resulting in the adjustment knobs being close to the front mount. That being said, I always leave a small gap. I never mount the windage/elevation knobs against the mount. Same thing with the rear magnification adjustment.

    Do yourself a favor and reload your hornet ammo. You should be able to halve your group size. With my select loads my hornet shoots 1/4 MOA. Using my fast and dirty loads it shoots big sloppy 1/2 MOA groups. It is easily the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I neck size only, and use an "M" die to expand the case neck .060-080" deep to prevent the case mouth from crumpling when you seat the bullet. On day one with my CZ lux I was able to hit pennies @ 100 yards, and cut the head off a crow in young corn @ 175 yards. I use Hornady V-max bullets in 35 and 40 grains, H-110 powder, Remington brass, and CCI small rile or small pistol primers.

    I never understood what is the caliber 22 hornet for ?

    • @texmexshoots
      @texmexshoots  2 роки тому +2

      Technically it is a varmint round. Meant for coyotes and the like. However, I can tell you in Texas, many of the old timers would use the round to great success in culling whitetail deer. I would not advise doing so especially since it isn't legal to hunt deer with small 22 calibers in most states.

      @@texmexshoots Thank's ,but isn't .223 better ? or maybe it spoils the animal too much ?

    • @texmexshoots
      @texmexshoots  2 роки тому +2

      It's a much smaller round than the .223. So it can be an advantage for those hoping to keep the animal's pelt from getting to much damage. Also a little quieter (relatively) and you don't have to worry about it traveling as far as the 223. Can be another advantage for people hunting smaller properties. The recoil is also soft enough to keep your eye on the target through the scope when taking the shot.
      That being said, the .223 is a much more versatile round.

      @@texmexshoots I saved up all my money a few years ago and bought a very expensive Anschutz 1727. It was so expensive my fingers were almost shaking as I hit the buy button. But I figured this was a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.
      I absolutely love everything about the rifle, especially the accuracy. When I tested ammo I found it liked CCI TNT and Hornady VMAX. Five consecutive 4-shot groups with TNT measured .35 .36 .65 .72 .56 CTC at 100 yards. Three of the groups can be covered with a dime and the other two I can probably blame the shooter. It is easily the most accurate rifle I own.
      I also tested ammo on a Savage for my nephew and it averaged about 1 MOA at 100 yards with VMAX. The 17hmr is very sensitive to the wind so be sure and do your testing on extremely calm days.
      I shoot lots of prairie dogs in NM with my Anschutz and 200 yard shots aren't a problem on calm days. I don't shoot on windy days because ammo is just too expensive. I topped it with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP scope. It sounds like to much magnification but it actually isn't because I can slip the shots through vegetation when necessary. It's an expensive setup but what the heck.... I'm retired and I can't take it with me!
