    Do the same with bunnies in Australia using the .22LR at up to 100yards. Some warrens are large and you can go through a brick (500) of bullets in a day. Love your passion and can watch all day. Non shooters do not understand the environmental destruction these little creatures can do if left unchecked.

    Great Videos on the Hornet. You talked me into picking up a slightly used CZ 527 in 17 Hornet. Barrel threaded, trigger adjusted, and pillar bedded... now we load ammo, and wait for spring.

    Hi Cavedweller, thanks for the robust reply. I reckon the rancher uses every bit of available land. Shepherds here also use large areas of low grade land to grow sheep for mutton, so I understand removing vermin that degrade the feed supply. Check out David Attenborough the naturalist regarding ground hogs and prairie dogs. Seems like they dig out the sub soil minerals and it gets mixed with buffalo fertiliser to make the prairies bloom. That little 17 Hornet sure hits hard and still leaves something left to photograph. I did enjoy watching your shooting skill.

The 17 hornet hasn't really taken here as yet and the 17 super mag is making its mark !! But with 223 rounds so cheap here most will just go straight to is if the 17hmr cant get it done !!! But we do keep a few for the pot !!! Thats y the 22lr is preferred when possible !! Less meat damage !!!

    That's good clean fun right there! I picked up a Savage 25 Walking Varminter chambered in .17 hornet last year and just started reloading ammo for it. It is an absolute tack driver with Hornady factory ammo so I'm hopeful that I can at least equal the performance with my hand loads . It's a costly little round up here in Canada, and there are a lot of Prarie dogs to shoot. Up here we refer to them as gophers though. Great videos by the way, I have watched many of yours and just had to sub.

    • @tomharrell1954
      @tomharrell1954 5 років тому

      If you study reloading. Learn how to do it right. You can make better ammo than factory. It is not that difficult. All guns are a bit different, even the exact same caliber from the same manufacturer.
      At benchrest matches all the competitors make their own. You can’t buy factory ammo for my rifle.
      Have fun! Be careful. Just think about what you are doing. You will be fine.

    • @artfranz2273
      @artfranz2273 4 роки тому

      bosstube Good question. Yup those bullets are tiny. I like using the Hornady die set, they have a little cone shaped tube that comes down out of the die that helps a lot to get the bullet sitting square on the case as you push the ram up. With my big fingers I’d have to use needle nose pliers with a RCBS die.

      I’ve got the same gun too. And it’s consistent, everything you feed it groups at 1.5”. Until you set the bullets .010 off the lands and then it tightens right up. But then you can’t use the mag. And to feed it single shot is really ugly, you have to hold the gun vertical and then aim carefully and drop.

      For what I use them for, the 17 gains me, maybe a hundred yards on P-Dogs. If your buying for hunting coyotes, go NOTHING less than a 50 or 55gr bullet at 3000 FPS or so. .223 Rem, the 22-250 is better. If you are going light weight, the 17 with the heaviest bullet you can find that shoots straight would be my pick.

    • @cavedweller1959

      Nether of the 2 ever had blue copper fouling during cleaning, but the Ruger, after 25-30 rounds would hit every where but where I had aimed. Accuracy went completely out the window. I don't recall the exact number but it was well over 200 before the CZ gave up the accuracy. The set trigger is a sweet bonus also.

    • @cavedweller1959
      @cavedweller1959  7 років тому +1

      It doesn't, With a 600 FPS difference they will never be in the same class. I think the WSMs biggest downer is the price of ammo, almost $35.00 a 100.. Can you see any hard core high volume dog shooters dropping 75 - 100 bucks or more to feed one rifle that realistically is only a 200-225 yard killer----per day??

      Not where I started, but what I settled on. With Hornady V-Max pills, I load 11.8gr of AA 1680 with the 20gr & 10.5gr with the 25gr. My favorite is Hornady's discontinued 25gr HP with CFE BLACK. This is in my CZ, When I started with the 17H, it was a Ruger HB, that one did best with Lil Gun.

      I’m trying to find my load on the 25g HP. I grabbed 400 when I had the chance. It shot the factory’s insanely well. I have CFE BLACK. Had to send rifle back to get the right bolt and it’s not going well with the new one. I’ve also heard the AA 2200 worked well also. Tough time finding any powder. Are you able to fit your loads in their magazines ?

      Due to everything that’s going on with ammo and loading supplies, I can’t find AA1680 anywhere, and I refuse to pay the astronomical prices for CFE BLK. I however found some AA2200 locally that was dirt cheap.
      Read about some guys using it on 20g pills with good success....although most posts were with 25g. I decided to try with 20g Hornady’s to see how it went.
      Sub .5 MOA all day in a Savage M25, loads super easy. Just got some 20g Nosler HP that I’m gonna try also.

    So, strange question maybe but here goes.. do the prairie dogs eat their own dead ? We have ground squirrels up here that will feed on each other after being shot, kinda strange watching them drag their buddy down a hole and chew on his head. Nice shooting by the way !

      I don't recall ever seeing p-dogs actually eating their dead bros, but we have a few flicker tails, Franklin Ground Squirrels I think, They eat the dead. Play the wind right & you shoot all day and never move, you can see them coming from several 100 yards when they catch a whiff of blood.

Not legal for hunting and we certainly can't shoot snakes. Go to jail for that here as they are protected. Crazy huh! We have 7 of the top 10 deadliest snakes in the world and THEY'RE protected. Keep up the good work man. Love the vids. Oh also, we can't have suppressors down here. They can across the Ditch (New Zealand) but not us!
