Excellent vid - I have always hated and avoided putting on grips. In the past had tried the air hose, grip glue, and hair spray methods with much frustration. Put new grips on a trials bike last night using this electrical tape and gas method and it was surprisingly easy and set up fast. The only change i did was to rub the tape with some gas as well just before sliding on the grip - works awesome!
thanks for the helpful advice. I never knew about the gas, electrical tape method before and I just tried it and it worked great. it's like its glued on and took only about a min to dry. nice and firm and easy to install. thanks again.
i figured the whole reaction thing out awhile ago, i had some duct tape covering a small hole in the gas tank of my snowmobile and when i went to take it off it was hard to peel off and it left a sticky residue that to this day (probably 4-5 months from then) is still there.
I'm about to do my first grips. I would prefer not to use glue just because of the possibility of jamming up the throttle tube. If I do the zip tie method, will the grips eventually slip because of no glue?
Hello, yeah if you don't use some kind of adhesive there's the possibility of the grips slipping. You could use some wire tie to help secure them but still without adhesive there's still a chance of slipping.
@@chaparralmotorsports Thanks for the response. Im still ot sure which option Im going to use. Ive read that brake cleaner or gas will break down the rubber inside the grip and when it dries bonds to the bars really well, I might do that. Im just worried im going to glue my throttle tube and mess it up!
I just watched this after I put the grips on and damn I used a butter knife to get them off and to get them on. Idk why I didn’t watch this vid but great tips
Used a bmx grip as a funnel gasket(idk) on a gas can before. Two days later the grip had basically dissolved. Kinda skeptical of gasoline and rubber ATM, but it might have been due to the quantity... I'm just here looking for a good reason to not put flangeless grips on my dirty... or a practical way to shove a flange cut from another set on the inside of the grip. I want to run vans cult grips
I used some spray polyurethane I had laying around, hopefully that doesn't somehow react with the grips? once its dried it should be fine anyways but I figured that stuff is so oily when wet and I figured it would be easy to slide the grips on with it so that's what I used.
I watched this and gave the electrical tape and gasoline method a try. For some reason the gasoline ate a hole in my grip. I did it exactly like the video shows. I’m sure they were a cheap grip to begin with. Any other reason for this? I would buy another set and try again but not if I will have the same results.
Hmm, we used this method for other applications and hot had that experience you described. Without being there and seeing first hand we cannot say for sure what caused the issue. Sorry. Maybe try one of the other methods shown in the video before going with the gasoline method again.
I tried just compressed air. If I twist hard they do slip so I’m going to take them off and try the hair spray method. And if you’ve ever taken the one throttle grip off a Suzuki DR650, you can accomplish anything in life 😉
Hi, the intent of this video was to demonstrate different methods to installing dirt bike grips. This was not meant as full step-by-step "how to install dirt bike grips." But to address your comment, yes the grip on the throttle side was replaced. Skip to the 12:30 mark in the video. Thanks for watching.
Tried hairspray once, SUCKED. Just recently my friend tried some type of grip glue that took a little longer to dry. First attempt it never did dry so he had to pull it off and start over. The second attempt was a little better, but the grip still moves slightly, especially when he turns on the heat. Another friend was installing Oxford Heated Grips. He tried the same glue, same result. So then I remembered the glue that the Oxford's come with is essentially super glue. I had Oxford's on my last bike for 9 years and the glue never failed. We bought some super glue, slapped the grip on, and in about 10 seconds it was solid, no spinning or waiting for hours. We went riding the next day, the glue had been curing for 15 hours at this point. My friend was able to use his grips on high heat with no issues. Super glue for the win my friends. However we're not moto guys, we don't ride on tracks. You moto guys may have different experiences than us as you're probably torquing on your grips more than we do.
It’s crazy to me that if you run an aluminum throttle tube, you can’t buy a set of grips that has the lock on feature on the clutch side and the normal slide on style for the aluminum throttle tube. Not only that but it is difficult to find a set of lock on grips and non lock on grips that “match” (same exact model and shape and size). In other words, if I were to buy a set of lock ons pro taper pillow tops at almost $30 and just use the clutch side “lock on” and then buy a set of non lock on pillow tops for $10-15 to use the throttle side, the pro taper “pillow tops” are actually different shape, different length, etc. I have also found this with the half waffles as well. They change the design just enough, so even if I were willing to spend over $40 on 2 sets of their products and throw the left overs away, the patterns on the grips don’t even match. Completely stupid!!
This video makes sense for chaparral because something easy like buying parts take 2 hours. Just like waiting in your parts line for 2 hours to buy one small part. Simple green, alcohol and it removes.

Back in the old days I left some Oury grips in a pan of gas for some reason and the next day I said "What the hell are THESE things?!" They were 2 - 3x as big as normal.
Did it work for you? The hairspray will not melt the electrical tape adhesive as gasoline does... Curious to hear your outcome. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
@@jvohnbarlow1396 Yes, you really need the GAS to dissolve the adhesive of the tape. We recommend you bust those grips loose, add some gas and slide them back on! You won't be disappointed. - Kyle

On the throttle side , always twist the grip forward , most important fact of the entire video . A+A+A+

Isn't that common sense though?
@@chaparralmotorsports Can I use gas on the throttle side? It won't hurt the plastic throttle tube? I really appreciate the video!

The zip tie method worked great first time trying it myself!!!!

Used the zip ties. Took some elbow grease like you said, but worked well.
Hi Ryan, glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching.
Double stick masking tape and lighter fluid work very well also. It's the traditional method for installing grips on golf clubs.
Thanks for the insight.
Needle filled with rubbing alcohol is fast and easy on rubber grips for removal and installing.
Great tip. Thanks for watching.
This was an excellent guide, well done and thank you!

I would bet that spray electrical insulation would work really well by itself. I have to give it a try
Thanks for great video. Electrical tape and Gasoline works AWESOME!
Thank you. Yeah it does.
What one do you recommend most
Hello, they are all great options, it just depends on what works best for you and what tools you have on hand.
The zip tie method totally works!! Easiest and cleanest grip change I've ever done.

But will it losen up or move at all? That's the thing I'm worried about with the gasoline and electrical tape method

electrical tape and gasoline. genius. thanks
You bet!
I use gasoline, it evaporates fairly quick and it almost feels like it’s glued down.

Brake cleaner works good too, dries within seconds
I tried clear coat spray paint, 0/10 do not reccomend. I let it dry for 2 days and it slid all over the place

would loctite spray adhesive work?
Hi Cole, haven't used that before, but it would probably work. Loctite makes a Gel Super Glue that works pretty good too.

Question what other grip glue could I use beside like pro taper and things like that like from the stire
We have 5 items and they can be found here: www.chapmoto.com/search?q=grip+glue

Hairspray didn't work for me. Stayed wet. Maybe wrong type. It was my wife's. Gas n tape did trick after twisted day of riding.

Spraypaint works better than grip glue in my opinion. I have grip glue at home but I use spraypaint instead.
Thanks for your feedback!
This helped me more than the video who tf uses gas
First of all the handlebar should be facing down like the other one so when it drips it will drip onto the floor not into the brake or whatever
