One of my fav self developed bike wrenching hacks is stripping the old rubber off lock on's, and replacing it with a push on grip of choice, surprisingly easy and gives you lock on's with pretty much any grip you desire.
OK ... since a few of you lads seem interested in this hack, I should probably give a little more info on it. You cannot do this with every brand of lock on's, as some brands fuse the plastic body to the alloy lock ring (probs ejection moulded together), and you need to be able to remove the lock ring on at least one end to make it work. You need lock on's where the lock ring is clipped into the plastic sleeve somehow. Take your time removing the lock ring/s as you really don't want to mangle or break the plastic parts that hold the lock rings in place. Once you get the old grips off, which will probs involve some Stanley, or craft knife usage, just use soapy water and the spoke technique Doddy showed to get your new grips on. Once they're on, they are going nowhere, so place them carefully before you let the soap dry. Then carefully clip the lock ring/s back on. P.S. Almost forget to say the whole operation is generally easier if you remove the lock ring from only one end, and use the remaining lock ring to secure lock ons to a set of bars, the bars can be on bike or just clamped in a strong vice. Hope this helps peeps
I work at a shop and use an air compressor mostly. But at home I use rubbing alcohol, works every time and just takes a little longer for it to evaporate. Also the silicone grips are my personal fav! Soo comfortable.
I was surprised that bar end plugs with hidden tools where not mentioned. I have seen quite a few tubeless tire repair kits sold as bar end plugs as well as a few other handy tools.
I recently lost a samurai bar end plug on a ride (which was never used and only a few months old), proper gutted they weren't cheap so wont get another set as just bought a new plug tool to store in my bag for 1/6th of the cost.
Hi David! This video was just an explainer on how install grips. Installing special bar end plugs can follow some of the same installation instructions found in this video. However, we'd always recommend checking the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the bar ends you have. Hope this helps! 👍
Great hacks! I'm an older rider and like 'ergonomic' style grips and, I find that a little bit of movement can make the day less fatiguing on my pre-arthritic hands.
A lot of people prefer grips that have a bit more movement! It's great that there are more grip options around in the market that provide more support for people that struggle with arm pump and grip. 👍
A local pump track was demolished years ago because a kid perforated his stomach with his bars because he didn't have barend plugs. Never used anything to help put push on grips on, it takes effort but I find wrestling them also softens them up a bit making them nicer to hold.
Hair spray is a good alternative for fitting slide on grips as it acts as a lubricant to slip them on, then dries off like a glue to bind them to the bars.
Thanks Doddy, way to teach an old dog new tricks! Grips thought I knew everything but no wired on grips was interesting to hear about. Better get the Tresume in before it sells out! 🤣
I used 70 percent ethanol and it worked great and the silicone push-on is holding in place at least so far. My hand kept slipping while pushing the new grip on, but using a rag over the grip worked perfectly! Thanks for your helpful vids!
My dad used to put grips on my dirt bike as a kid. He would use gasoline to slide the grips on and that was it. Never had problems. I’m just talking about the normal everyday rubber only grips. I still use this method for my mtb.
For getting push-on grips off, I found that one or two large cable ties inserted between the grip and the handlebar will allow enough lubricant in that the grip is pretty easily removed. It is best if the cable ties are inserted about a third of the length of the grip. I have always used rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol since I have never seen it hurting any of the materials and it evaporates quickly, leaving no residue. It may be helpful to squeeze the grip and twist it several times to get the alcohol to spread under more of the grip before trying to remove it.
Always used the Yeti push ons. Cleaned the bar with rubbing alcohol then heated the grips in boiling water they slipped on easy and once left and fully cooled they always stuck firm and I never had them move or twist.
It's a video, my hero. Don't just mention it, but show how the Renthal glues are to be handled and what are the results, when trying to remove the grips. How to remove the residue from the bars afterwards or when replacing grips with new ones. With smooth handlebars I never had any issues using push on grips, but on those with a ball blasted finish, water can easily find a way in and they slip. Hairspray doesn't help here.
With push on grips just use the technique for regripping golf clubs, a wrap of double sided tape lubed with white spirit/isopropyl then the grip slid on and left to dry. Won’t go anywhere
Try installing like golf clubs. Two sided tape and solvent or an air compressor. Also use a hooked blade to remove the old ones so you don’t score the bars.
I use to use hair spray for my mountain bike grips. I can't remember if I was told to do this, or just tried. I haven't bought a pair of lock on grips yet. I need to replace my current ones; I want to buy a set of Ergon's👍
Hair Spray?? Who know? Thanks for the tip. Great video. I learned a lot. Saw 15 minute on grips and wondered how can Doddy talk about grips for 15 minutes. Know we know the rest of the story.
When I worked at a bike shop we used gt-85 or wd40 , believe it or not it slides on easy but then reacts with the rubber and glues the rubber grip to the bar, don’t believe me, try it
Not from what i know, my dad uses various slippy things depending on what he has on hand, i have seen him use DW40 but i would definitively advice against that last one.
Why would you want to use grip glue? What if you have some shitty shifter like shimano that needs removing of the grip to be removed ? I just use 70% ethanol , put it on and when it dries out its going nowhere.
Use IPA and a zip tie. Both for getting it on and off. Better than all of these methods. It will evaporate from the system quickly when installing. Easy
I've been using gasoline since my BMX days in the 80's. It kind of melts the inside of the rubber slightly, makes it slide well, leave it a few hours (overnight works) and next day they're practically glued to the bar and will last for a year or two. To remove them, just pry one end with a tyre lever or blunt screwdriver and put in a little bit of water, wiggle the grip and it will slide off.
@@Ferrari255GTO problem with lock on grips is the little bolts cut you if you have larger hands. I cut my thumb open riding dirt jumps. The only lock on grips I liked were the specialized Fuze but they don't make them anymore. The new ones specialized make are short just like any ODI. I prefer longnecks or cult vans over any other grip. If you know of any long lock on grips, let me know the name.
@@burningatthetrailhead superstar components in the UK used to do locking grips in a couple of different lengths and diameters to suit different hand sizes. I don't know if they still do but might be worth checking their website?
#AskGMBNtech What brand of grips are better for big hands? I'm having a bad time getting numb hands on my bike. I'v tried gloves and different brands without succes....Thanks and keep up the good work!

Good video, but I feel obliged to share a warning based on my experience with hairspray and handlebar grips. Hairspray has been suggested on at least a couple of motorcycle forums. I tried it on my 1969 Triumph Bonneville 650 grips and it worked really well until one day I got caught in a rain shower. That's when I discovered that when combined with water hairspray effectively turns to the most slippery lubricant known to mankind. Luckily I survived the discovery and the 60-mile ride home with a "zippity-doo-dah" grip, but I'm a-tellin' ya right here -- Hairspray + Handlebar Grips + Water = BEWARE! Your grips be flyin' off the bars! Also, here's a good tip - when you're having a hard time trying to get something with a lot of friction over another thing, don't try to twist it on - give it a good thump with a heavy plastic or rubber mallet - or use something hard and heavy with a "beater-block" as a buffer. A good whack and your grip, footpeg, etc. goes right on.
Use a spoke to remove, once spoke is slid in between bar and grip the use GT85 with straw along side spoke and rotate grip and spoke to with to loosen. To install spray GT85 on inside of the grips and bar for an easy slide on. I done a fair few hundred ands its been consistently good for me and ready to go in a few minutes. Seems weird as a Teflon spray grease, but it dries sticky.
Look, everyone starts somewhere, and there are plenty of other things that seem far more obvious that people fuck up on a daily basis. Especially slip ons can be stupidly annoyng to mount if you are unsure of how to get them without having them slip afterwards. I'm way more mad about people needing to be told that brakes need to stay away from lube, like ffs toddlers know that stuff
We would disagree. Everyone has to start somewhere, especially if you've never really ridden bikes properly. Also, most people will find this useful as a refresher on some of the best practises when it comes to grips. 👍
