Hi! Loved your reaction! I have a suggestion for you: try Creep from Radiohead (dark 90s) and the cover of it from Haley Reinhart with Postmodern Jukebox. I know you like her 😉. Both versions are unique in their own way!
Love your channel!
Greetings from Germany!
You’re failing Jesus‘s seal of approval on this song because we’re going to meet Jesus in the air at any moment and it’s called the rapture!!! 🌈🕊️🆙🕊️🌈
Overanalyzing it, destroys it man. You are taking away from the magic of it.
Yammering thAt much RUINS the magic. Talk after!
This song was not the opening of the concert. This was an hour and eighteen minutes into it. The concert opens with a drum solo by Phil and turns into a percussion trio by the end of it. Well worth checking out the full concert.
Wow…it stil amazing!!! But the drum solos are so good!!!…so its the onely concert i Wich a hade sen live i promes you that….
Not sure why he thought his most popular song would open the show, it would obviously close or be very late in his show.
they almost always put the hit songs in the middle towards the end. if you've seen a concert, then you know it's not the beginning, think about it
@@einsp227 I've been in a concert where Phil opened with a piano version of in the air tonight (Hamburg, 2004). In the silent moments of this song you could hear the sound of a neelde in a 12.000 arena. Completely different, but also great. The drum-version I've seen twice (1994 an 1998). They changed the intro everytime a little, after that ist stayed the same.

Phil Collins one of the 7 wonders of the world "in my opinion" 😂 he's a legend and a genius and can't be matched or mimicked!! No voice comes close ❤
I was there, I saw it, I heard it, I FELT IT!
Everything in that performance was choreographed and precision timed for him to arrive at the exact right moment to hit that Iconic drum roll.
The timing is impeccable through the entire song. The way he changes the accents on the phrase "I can feel it coming in the air tonight" like 18 times. Lol. The suspenseful build up. The outro is amazing. It's all so beautifully done. This man/band is so sickly talented.
This must be the best ever live performance by any artist 👌👌
No. That's Queen. This is good but it's not Queen.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST!!!!!
@@tinasjostrand2677queen wasn't even the best sorry even if I am an fan. Actually this is....🎉
I love Queen too. RIP Freddie. They are both incredible. They are my top 2.
If it's not the best, it's not far from it. But then again, the "best ever" is subjective, based on your own preferences. We can all agree that it's amazing.
Phil is a Wonderful Vocalist, but to maintain that while playing the Drums so very well is simply Magic to my ears.
The Man is a Genius.
He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). Incidentally, you were hearing the great Brad Cole on synthesizer and vocoder. Anyway, this song was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).
The Take Me Home Live is amazing too
Was 2007 not four.
@@amandabooth-he9gu Nope, 2004. Or…the DVD that this performance posting on UA-cam came from-is totally wrong.
I love to see young people enjoying our music from the 80s-90s
Quite possibly the best periods of popular music
This is my very favorite song by Phil Collins. ❤. I could listen to this over and over. Fantastic song.
Congratulations. You have been Philed!
The 80's music was the best music EVER!!!! THEY DON'T PLAY IT LIKE THIS ANYMORE!!! 💕 LOVE IT❤❤
H of The Stage........I watched the brief mention Phil made of the link you provided but I would love to tell you the full story.
When the album, "Face Value" came out in 1981, Phil did a brilliant interview where he talked about why he wrote each song on the album. I watched the show and can recall where he talked about "In The Air Tonight". Phil and his wife had bought a house and his wife wanted to get an Interior Designer in make the house more stylish.
Phil agreed to it and she made all the arrangements and hired the designer because Phil was busy touring. The problem was that while Phil was away working on his music career, the Interior Designer was at home, working on Phil's wife. Phil finally met the designer, for the first time, when he got back from the tour and the designer handed him the Invoice for the work he had done. It was after this that Phil's wife confessed to the affair. Phil was shattered. His marriage was over and he retreated from the world for awhile. When the words to this song came into his head....he wrote them on the back of the Invoice the Interior Designer had given him.
I hope this helps you understand the song better now.
And Phil turned his suffering into this masterpiece for us all to enjoy! His wife must be so pissed 😂
This was actually the start of the second half (after intermission). Paris 2004. It is amazing how much he sounds as it did in 1981! Phil is singing 'at' the fellow to ran off with his wife, imho.
The whole concert is worth a listen, btw.
I'm a Grandma. You should rest your voice. Excellent reaction. I subscribed. The song was in the middle of the concert.
Finest Performance Ever. Phil is amazing live. Pitch Perfect and Impeccable Timing.....just awesome.
30 times he sings "Awh, awh, awh" etc,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, amazing! Still brings tears to my heart,,, bad ass, indeed.
I am 74 yo and traveled from Indianapolis Indiana, to Paris to watch this concert! I would not go to the next block to see you!! Phil Collins was a genius!! You couldnt hold a candle to Phil Collins.. Nothing Phil Collins ever achieved was simple.. He was a musical genius....
I agree with you 100%. Who talks over Phil Collins first of all, to talk nonsense? He had no knowledge or time reference of this performance.
Tell them. We elders would not go to the next block to see these artists for free.
That's why your a vocal coach and he's a Legend!!
Yes Phil Collins was a beast on those drums
this song was on at over an hour into the concert and the encore was 'take me home' which was also fantastic - the whole concert was brilliant
OMG...love that song too.
Where was the concert and when?
Brad Cole the keyboardist is using a vocoder not AutoTune. The vocoder is not done in all the parts it should be because Brad has to do a keyboard line instead of the vocoder. Phill uses a Eventide harmonizer for his delays and other effects on his voice
This is not autotune on the BVG, but a vocoder, probably an Eventide H3000 harmonizer hardware. They have it now in a plugin also. It's a powerful tool. You are right, this is one of the better live performances, it's so good that I like this version more than the studio version. I even did a remaster of this song (which I'm do not often).
Love your appreciation of Phil's creative performance. I too believe it is the best or at least one of the best rock performances ever. Such raw emotion in every ounce of production. Stunning!
It’s already been mentioned by other commentators but this is the start of the second half of the concert. The start of the concert is an amazing drum battle between Phil, Chester Thompson and luis conte and it’s definitely worth a watch. Two sets of drums and percussion only and it’s absolutely amazing.
And by the way, the additional drummer here is not Phil’s son but Chester Thompson who’s drummed with Phil and Genesis for years. Another awesome drummer.
Love that this generation appreciate the likes of Phil Collins on Drums.
Phill Collins is a rare gem, so talented. One of a kind, unique and underappreciated a lot in my opinion. Thank you H for your reaction. Stay safe and get better soon🙏💟
While it mat not be a difficult drum beat drop, it is one of the most iconic.
Great choice for a reaction!! What an amazing performance. Classic, iconic, epic. Of course, we wait for the drum, but wow, he is amazing all the way through. I think doing older songs is a great idea. The older the better (showing my age lol)
I think a mix of both is the way to go but I would like to travel back in time and especially check classics like this but that I haven't heard before. Phill is a legend for a reason!
Nothing, absolutely NOTHING needs to be changed in HIS SONG!!! IT IS PERFECT!!!!
Phil never starts the concert with this song. He was backstage to get the equipment fitted. He usually starts with a drum performance (he, Chester Thomson and Louis Conte) and switch immediately after to "Something happened on the way to Heaven". I have been on 3 Phil Collins Concerts in my life...
Phil Collins - with this live performance, you just enshrined yourself as one of the best performers in the Music Hall of Fame. Unquestionably, you are a Legend. Thanks for your music ... love you.
Forever the most iconic drummer. Was a drummer before anything else.
It's not autotune it's a vocoder that the guy on the synth is controlling on the backing vocals mics.
An excellent use of the vocoder is in the song "See Them Smile" by Saga.
"One more time!" Most. Relateable. Moment. Ever.
Everyone in the world who has heard this song knows how to play that drum fill. Weather or not they can play drums. It's the most iconic drum fill ever!
Nope…singing while playing drums is amazing. He’s also an amazing song writer.
Drum riff heard around the world 🥁
I don't think most people realize that he spends 5 minutes walking TO the drums, sits down and destroys the fill without missing a beat.
Methodically
If you grew up in the 80's this is iconic . At the time it was stated it was about his divorce. His wife was cheating with their decorator. TV show Miami Vice which was huge everywhere in the 80's used this as Don Johnsons theme when he drove his Ferrari round Miami at night. The music & fashion on the show made it iconic for the time.
Me watching him replay the drum: Ah, a fellow man of culture
Awesome. A Legend In His Time
EPIC!
I've watched and listened to this incredible live performance many times now to the point I'm actually hooked on it. Ha! Of all the live commentary and reaction accompanying it, this is the best, in my opinion and demonstrates your expertise as a vocal coach.
What they used was AMS 1580 dual delay harmoniser in the backup...Phil Collins nor Genesis used Autotune Ever on recordings or Live Performances. and this wasn't the first song of the concert, this was almost 2 hours in.
Everybody miss a litle detail but its shows how good this performance is. One second... That how fast he sits on the drum and start playing
The drummer is Chester Thompson. His son now plays with him, but was only a couple of years old at this time
Right, I know that he plays with him now but I didn't check when this concert was recorded.
@@HofTheStage 2004 in Paris/story was more about a cheating spouse. It caused a delay with Genesis. This song was his first solo release if I recall correctly. Phil has expanded his repertoire immensely since I first saw Genesis in concert with Peter Gabriel out front singing.
Great reaction. This song will always give me eighties chills. Miami vice
His voice was the soundtrack of my youth, from about 1983 to 1991, it's been said that Phil Collins sang like every fourth song on the radio. If you were in your car with the radio on for 15 minutes, you heard Phil Collins at least once. That’s just how it was.
I replayed that part and it said... MOST REPLAYED.... I am shocked.. I thought I was the only one lol
two of the best live performances i have witnessed growing up was seeing Pink floyd and Genesis in 1987, absolutely iconic at the peak of their sustained music ability, both were as incredible as this live version, Chester thompson & Phil Double druming, Daryl Sturmer, seen here staple live musicians Daryl working with him on solo projects including 'in the air' is masterful. Phil, these bands including Leland Sklar with the one other band TOTO are all just incredible live! i was privileged to see them all and they never dissapoint
Yes, the multi-tasking was phenomenal. So much energy in expended in the singing while an even greater amount of energy on the drums. And not necessarily in sync with each other. A magical minute like no other.
Do we know for sure he started the concert with this song? It could've been a long break towards the end, or an encore. He was sweating in this performance. I don't know though.
Update: It is the 16th song in the concert. Full concert here - ua-cam.com/video/cPzrZ-1g-7U/v-deo.html or In the Air Tonight starts here - ua-cam.com/video/cPzrZ-1g-7U/v-deo.html?t=4723
It was halfway the concert according to people who where there.
Thank you for the lesson and breakdown of how Phil did the song. One of my favorite songs. So much talent and effort. Loved it!!
I was lucky enough to see Phil Collins three times. He was this great! I loved seeing him twice solo when he performed this song. It was absolutely spectacular!
I envy you! 😭 You were in the presence of a singing and drumming god! 😊
Lucky!!! Now I wish I could go back and see him. Did you guys go crazy during Air Tonight?
Woooow!!! Magic. What a BADASS PERFORMANCE....👍🏼💯🥁
Thanks so much for this Video...i love Phil Collins my whole life..since i was 11.
He always touches my heart with his unic voice....he is really more than a Legend...just the best ever❤❤❤
Dude is a badass Beast😺 !!!!! Appreciate your reaction. 😊
I really loved your reaction!! ❤
I have 2 concert memories that stand out: (1) this song, on this tour in Montreal, (2) a few years before seeing Genesis open with Mama in Toronto. A generational talent for sure.
This concert happened when his son was really young, like mid 2000’s.
It's awesome
Great reaction, I love this song! 🎵❤️🎵
Tnn tnnn tn tn tn tn tn tn tnn tnn :D
This song was on the radio all day long for years. It was a great date song. Back then we would dress up and go out. If you were born in the 70's you might ask your parents what song they were courting to. This was probably top of the list.
פיל קולינס הוא אגדה❤❤❤זמר מדהים הוא איקוני❤❤❤אהבתי את התגובה שלך👍👍👍👍🫶🫶🫶
This was an amazing performance!
I know what you are saying: The vocoder just adds to the conveyance of the song and its impact!! And at the right times! So subtly effective!!!
PHIL IS FANTASTIC. THE BEST PARTIS HIM ON THE DRUMS. I LOVE TO WATCH HIM.
Nick Collins does drum for his dad, but not till 2015-ish? And the only time he went into detail about this song was on "Behind the Music" on MTV. (or VH1?)
The details were that Phil discovered his wife cheating on him, (the pair didn't know they'd been seen) and this was his response to that situation.
Nowadays he simply talks about his wife going back to Canada with the kids, and the pain of that, etc.
He chose to show respect for the mother of his kids, and leave out the details.
Classy move, mad respect.
Love how you pick up on the polyrhythms between his voice and drums. This is his secret sauce along with perfect timing, so you should definitely try some Genesis. He (and also Peter Gabriel) often sing 'against' the music. Very cool. And Genesis loves to combine voice and instruments with similar intonations and orchestrate with layers of sound and percussion. Very sophisticated music with much nuance. But it will be hard to find anything that can match this powerful, magical performance.....and that still takes my breath away. Oh! yes! That bow, so cool.
It is the best drum part in my opinion. The complete composition… pure art.
He has stated many times (watched him) say it wasn't about anyone or anything. He had a melody. Literally sat down at his piano and the lyrics flowed from him. 98% of the lyrics were written then. He does say the turmoil in his personal life (divorce) might have influenced him but it wasn't about her or anyone. UTUBE or FB has this interview.
Phil is a legend. Period. ❤
The effect on the vocal is a Roland VP-330 plus vocoder. Great song, perforemance and video.
We must talk about this genius that is Phil Collins...
I literally cried when he finished.
The BEST LIVE performance I have
ever seen !!!!!! I still don’t know how he can beat in those drums and sing at the same time……. PHIL COLLINS
Is without a doubt amazingly phenomenal !!!!! LOVE HIM !!! 😘
Mesmerizing, thankyou
Interesting you are the only one I have seen to take note of his humble bow. I admired his reaction to the crowd as well
You know You could actually Meditate with this song (without interruptions of course) but the percussion, the music, the vocal, etc. Try it guys. God i miss Our Music. Those were THE DAYS! ❤❤❤
In this concert with all the old goodies, there are a lot of musicians, a good choir, etc,
you should look at it, it's amazing!
Phil Collins - Finally...The First Farewell Tour Paris 2004
He started as a drummer in Genesis, so it comes naturally for him.
Collins wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980. In a 2016 interview, Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair, and a lot of frustration".
I'm a little young to have grown up a Genesis fan, but my older siblings got me into Genesis. So many Genesis fans choose to be in the Peter Gabrial or Phil Collins camp. I love them both and Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford with the great Chester Thompson that joined so Phil could fill both his roles.
The best was when Chester would start a drum solo and Phil would join in making it this epic drum battle. With Genesis or solo, there was nothing like Phil live, and I went to a lot of concerts. They always worked with the best, like "Gandalf" Leland Sklar, Darrel Stuermer, and the rest of the band.
Side note: When with Genesis, auditioning musicians included getting to know them a bit. If they didn't have a sense of humor, they wouldn't get the gig. They believed in choosing people you enjoyed working with. They must have been a great band to be in.
Middle of f the concert of 80,000 people. Awesome drummer and singer.
Perfection!!!
drummer is chester dobson, Young collins only started to play on tour only a couple of years ago.
He had a piece of tech in his ear to help him sing too. He wrote plenty of successful albums of music over the years. Did movie work, acting as well, Miami vice, multi-talented is too small a word.
ICONIC 💗💥🔥
4:18 Miami Vice vibes right there !
As far as I know, I think he wrote this song because of his devours!
This song isn't the first song. it's at the second part of the concert. The concert starts with a drum solo with Phil and the drummer.
You should listen to the whole concert, it's amazing, the musicians, the brass and the chorus were really good. You can find the concert here on UA-cam.
The first farewell tour Paris 2004.
I'll tell you, I went to a little concert in Nov of 1981 that had everyone filled with crazy anticipation waiting for the first riff. I love Phil Collins but no one has topped seeing Freddie Mercury and Queen. It's been 40 years and likely that many concerts since but no one has topped Queen yet.
He doesn't use auto tune dude! Do your research. Phil Collins is a legend.
I said the backing vocals use autotune/vocoder
"WE'RE NOT WORTHY, WE'RE NOT WORTHY"😂❤ Wayne's World!
I do love your take on everything you do! Thank you "H". Would love to work with you one day 😮
Dankeschön - ein grossartiger Beitrag. Ich habe Sie sofort abonniert. Herzliche Grüsse aus der Schweiz.
You dont even know different!! This is music made by legends!!! They dont even produce music like this anymore!! You can call it progress if you want.. but today's music has regressed so much.. your ears cant believe an automated genre of music!!
Yes, it is sexy when your voice is broken up! 😍 LOL
Loved your analysis ❤🔥
Its so much fun to watch people who arent familiar with Phil Collins,or,didnt know he was a drummer, watch this and comment about there being no drums in the song.
Then, they realise that he,'d been walking toward a drum set, that rises up from the floor.
He hits that fill, and the jaws hit the floor!
first time with you. I like almost everything: mood, intenctions, technical explaniations. But at 19:37 you said "modest" about Phil's behavior in a live concert (you know they play, prove, test everything for a month at least) with video (square 2 for all). I understand, don't need any sugggestion. Great reaction! 🤩
Number one sin-- pausing Phil’s drum drop!!!
Thanks for mentioning this, won't watch it now:(
This video is about 15 years old. It is from his first farewell tour around 2007… It was not the first song of the concert I saw the concert… It was about the ninth song of the concert… His son was about two years old at the time.
Yeah, annoying this guy doesn't seem to have a clue about those aspects.
It was in 2004
Legend
The entire point of the performance is that the audience is waiting for him to hit the drums. It’s the delayed gratification of him taking the long way round. He has us at a point of hysteria when he finally sits down.
