Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD60s capture card using a real game cartridge. So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console and do you think this will end up on it? what do you think the top 5 or top 10 RPG games of all time are? Like me do you love sprite based Role playing games from the SNES or NES era? Do you prefer this or other strategy games on N64 like command and conquer or Starcraft 64? How would you like to see the series return on modern consoles?
I remember seeing this in Nintendo Power and thinking how awesome it looked. I saved my allowance, bought a new copy, popped it in, and hated it. You're right, the game is too complex and I was used to pick up and play up until then. About 6 months later I read a review in NP, and I decided to give it another chance and actually played the tutorial, and then the prologue, then beat the campaign, and started a new one right after. It really is an engrossing game, one I still play to this day. Thanks for the review, hopefully it will get more people interested in it.
yeah I was just saying to someone else here in the comments that its one of those games that as a kid I think anyone would have struggled with the complexities of it
I absolutly adore the sprite work in this game, i wish we could have gotten more game that look like this one. On a side note, i played this game for around 50-60 hours and i got the worst ending possible:p

Nicolas Cortés this game shows that the n64 had the power to make large rpgs but only if you made it as a 2D style game

Well 3D graphics were the big thing when this system came out so 2D sprite games weren't going to be common from the beginning and everyone knew it.
I fell utterly in love with this game as a kid, and it was easily my favorite game on the N64. From the intricate story to the endearing sprites to the sheer level of complexity (despite some hiccups, like the legion, for example, which just isn't helpful in my opinion), Ogre Battle 64 is simply a fantastic game. I've held on to the old copy I bought from a rental store (sticker and all) all these years, and I still break it out from time to time, even though the time required to do a proper run-through can well exceed 60-80 hours. Great review!

wow man yeah N64 repros are becoming more common now especially for these hard to find and expensive titles
Legions were really bad. A huge hit to the mobility of up to 5 of your units, just for one weak, extra attack all every combat. I never used them.
I loved this game too, story and all, once I figured out what was going on!
This is my favorite game of all time. Mainly the deep customizable characters that you actually train up and decided what they become. The sheer genius of the spells and ability to tag team/ sync up with others in your party with them....example one mage uses fire spell , mage beside them use earth spell , the next turn they synced up and cast same time to perform earth+fire= magma or lava. Just 20 years ahead of its time really. So hoping someone somewhere makes a new game with even deeper customization for your army and more combo spells. Well done Atlus still a timeless game. At least give us a remaster for ps4 or ps5 and Xbox one or series x coming out id even take a switch version.
Matsuo (FFXII's composer) did the music here, so no surprise it's OST is fantastic.

Hitoshi Sakimoto is the main composer of the two games though.
I picked this up at launch in Canada. I saw it first in my crisp new issue of nintendo power magazine haha and was on board at first glance. One of the best and deepest games of all time, not just the N64... The secrets buried in the maps, dialogues, overworld etc, lead to some of the best gaming surprises ever concocted. Getting special classes, finding rare monsters to recruit, getting powerful items, even the birthday scenes were all amazing... Oh wow.. how I love this game...

Such a rare kind of game on n64, beautiful graphics and I think one of the biggest n64 carts ever produced after RE2 and Conker.
Is it a 32MB cart?
@@alritedave It's a 40MB cart (320 Mbit). Same as Paper Mario.
II II no, 32 MB was common on n64, it's definitely bigger.

This game was and still is unique in many ways. I played this as a child so I couldn't get deep into the story (especially considering I'm brazilian, so my english was pretty much nonexistent) but I still had a blast. Me and my friend bought it close to its launch and we were addicted to it. Hundreds of hours well spent
Marco Araujo hey buddy, I love this game too MAN! and jsyk English is my first language and it is NO easier to understand the story. like. kind of like final Fantasy tactics in that I enjoy the story due to infighting and drama... but I really have no idea what happened come the end of the campaign. @@christophermiller3031 from what I remember the game gets crazy with its story towards the end, and surrenders to that cliché of fantasy, demons, parallel world, etc.. What I loved the most about this game was the class and monster progression. Seeing my units get aligned and OP was the best!
I can imagine this was quite the challenge for a non English speaker! was it expensive to get in Brazil at the time?
@@n64glennplant we were lucky to get it in a special offer we saw in a magazine. From what I rememer we got it for about $40 or so (R$ 99). As they were still producing copies of the game at the time, I guess not many people were predicting it would become rare. I still have that magazine and my copy of the game =).

Played this again a few years ago on an emulator that allowed to increase the game speed whenever you wanted. It helped a lot.
One of my favourite games ever. Incredible music, ambiance, story, and character building. Also loved the combat personally.
Which emulator did you use?
@@harrisjm62 Honestly I don't remember, I tried to find it again a while back, but none of the ones I found let me increase game speed. It's unfortunate because the game takes so long it's basically unplayable on normal speed.
I remember playing this emulated for 6 hours straight and loved it. The story was supurb. I did however rent quest 64 and also enjoyed it. The main character on quest 64 reminded me of alfalfa from little rascals with his hair standing up lol.

I absolutely love this game! I still own it for my N64 and I've played for countless hours..! I wish SquareEnix would either remake(HD) this game or just make a new one already.

They need an upgraded graphics and just more items and hidden characters and just more of everything! I have looked for other games like this and there are none. We need the next one on PS4 or 5. It would be amazing!

I definitely want to try this series out now! I played “Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together” on my PSP and loved the story and world and would love to return to it. Also, I think it’s funny that the sprite work in this game holds up and looks better today than almost all of the 3-D polygonal graphics of N64 games of that time!
I absolutely adore this game and series. Surprisingly, according to interviews, the plot notes for OB3/8 were drafted and submitted right as the people behind the series were shipped off elsewhere.
I first played this as a Blockbuster rental and loved it. It was towards the end of the N64's lifespan and the game was almost impossible to find. I would call all of my area's Game Stops (they might have been Funcoland at the time) daily to see if they got a used copy in stock. Eventually i found one and begged my parents to give me a ride until they did.
Totally worth it, it's still one of my favorite games of all time. I love the cycle of the strategic gameplay then the time spent customizing and upgrading my army, then jumping into the next battle.

That's some damn fine sprites, this is one of those ones I'd see for rental lots but the title was just so generic I thought it'd be terrible. Nice to see a longer form video from you, wanted more Glenn in my life.

This is one of my favorite games of all time. I still have my original cartridge and will hook up my N64 to play through it once a year. Ogre Battle 64 is just a great and enthralling experience for me.

Awesome game! I still have the physical copy somewhere even though I sold my N64 a long time ago. I didn't finish the game though, I played for about 82 hours and was somewhere in the last third of the game or something. It's massive! I spent hours in the preparation menus arranging my characters to optimize their attacks, while trying to balance even growth as to not have only a few really powerful units. It was a blast going through collecting the many possible characters, liberating towns, playing with their alignments so they'd class up and so on. What an awesome series, I really wish it'd come back.
oh mean yeah 82 hours should be close to the end depending on how many times you may have failed missions. it just such a huge game its hard to tell!
I loved this game. I bought the Japanese version. Because I was hearing at the time that the game may never see a western release. And I owned a video game store at the time. So it was super easy to get a copy. I even got two of them in my store for rent. Easily my favorite N64. Thank you for doing a review of this hidden gem of a masterpiece.
see the fact that there was the English language translation makes it more annoying for me that we didn't get a PAL release - the hard work was already done!

Such a coincidence! Im currently playing through Tactics Ogre LUCT on my hacked snes mini with an English patch as it was never released in North America, and Im loving every minute! The story is epic and very engaging, gameplay is so deep, music is an eargasm and personally I like the difficulty that comes with it as any unit killed in a battle is gone forever☠️
Plus the graphical style is superb imo. I can’t seem to find any faults in this game and as soon as Im done playing through it Ill start on N64!
ill have to give it another go of the SNES and PSP titles someday

This game is fucking brilliant, good choice for a review Glenn. Wish you had gone into a bit more depth about the organize screen and job system as I feel that's where much of the meat of the game is and reviewers always seem to just gloss over it. Also I don't think the queen song has anything to do with the Ogre Battle Saga? But I guess I could be wrong. Also it should be noted that the creator of The Ogre Saga; Yasumi Matsuno went on to develop Final Fantasy Tactics.
Easily a top 5 N64 game
And yeah, I was lucky and got my copy near it's launch date, never saw it for sale again until years later when I saw a loose cart copy for sale in a retro store for $135!
see its always hard to balance what to talk about and giving away too much info that could ruin certain things for people. maybe one day ill do an in depth on certain areas of games

I bought this game today! And now I'm Very looking forward to play It.
I actually picked this up at Blockbuster when I was really young, I must have been about 11. I grew up playing final fantasy, earthbound, chrono trigger, etc. On the NES & SNES so for me this was a breath of fresh air on the N64. I was pretty disappointed with the library compared to the Playstations and even compared to the Super Nintendo but Ogre Battle 64 quickly became my favourite game on the console. I really loved the story and how your choices made a difference in how the game was presented to you. Little did I know just how in depth it was and to this day people are still trying to understand the mechanics of it. It's amazing how much they accomplished in that tiny little grey box.
I still play it to this day which is how I found your video and I still have my original copy with box and manual which doesn't get touched at all anymore😅 because I saw the prices of it on Ebay. I suppose I was pretty lucky to find this game on the Blockbuster shelf of all places or even at all.

So, I got this game as a Christmas gift when it first came out, and I was SO baffled by it then; so many of the systems just went right over my young head. Despite this, it very quickly became one of my favorite games, and I actually just completed a play through of it again fairly recently! Love OB64!
Just ordered a Repro Copy. Looking forward to playing through it. When I was a kid I thought it was a fighting game. Had no idea it was an RPG. Looking forward to losing myself for 100 hours in it.

I first started playing the game from a Blockbuster back in 2000, and loved it. I was hooked, but woefully unprepared for its depth and complicated gameplay.
After a long weekend, I found the game at a local video game store and bought it in 2001. It's 2020, and I just finished another play-through. I genuinely love this game
Wahoo! Finally the game and review I've been waiting for! This game keeps me playing N64. Highly highly recommended if you like strategy/tactics.

Just discovered that they also brought Ogre 64 to the Wii U virtual console! I’m so happy thought I lost my chance of owning it on a Wii for $9.99 instead of going on eBay to hunt down the N64’s finest and only JRPG. Now that I have it back on my Wii U, I plan on snagging a copy of the game’s rare strategy guide.
I believe this is my all time favorite game! I always wished they made another one just like it. Either way I spent 100s of hours playing this game and never got all the endings.
Actually just got this last weekend at the market. Haven't played it yet but it definitely looks great, can't wait to get into it. Great review as usual.

This is one of my favourite games on the N64.
I remember buying it for 20 bucks complete on ebay when Gamecube was the new thing and interest on N64 was way down. Can’t believe how much it costs now. Years later, I bought it and played it again on the Wii virtual console as I had moved to another country and left my N64 back in Brazil with my small collection of about 70 games... my original copy is in a carton box in my old wardrobe back in Brazil. It’s a pity, it will remain there for years until I decide to bring it with me when I visit the country... Luckily I still have my Wii and my Wii U so I plan on playing it again in the future.

Bought this as a custom import at a specialty game store when I was twelve. I saved up for it after reading multiple things on it in my Nintendo power subscription. I was a firm believer that buying a game before renting it was pure insanity. Any game. But just from reading Nintendo power I bought this one and harvest moon 64. And both were legendary experiences. Ogre Battle 64 is a top 5 game of all time for me.

got lucky one year and found it for a reasonable price on ebay and convinced my mom to buy it for me. still have it on stock with my clear green n64, may have to bust it out to get another run through of this
This review overlooks one of the best aspects of Ogre Battle 64: the class system. You unlock new classes as you find equipment and level up your units. Over the course of the campaign, you'll be upgrading your units to more powerful and more unique classes. There are even special classes like the Lich, the Dragoon, and the Princess, which have special requirements to unlock. It is very satisfying to upgrade your army to more powerful classes as you progress in the game.
Very interesting looking game. N64 missed a lot of such games, so this is a good surprise.

@@n64glennplant so little, you almost finished. And I recommend you to play Doraemon games for N64, but only 1st one. It is quite enjoyable, if you won't compare it to Mario 64, it is even was released in same month as N64 launch in EU, so it is very early game for the system. But other 2 games even if good too, will be very cryptic for someone who doesn't understand japanese language.
I was blown away by OB64, I thought it made up for the otherwise lackluster RPG library yet it was such a rare game despite how good it was.
My friend had it for a couple years and easily put hundreds of hours into it finding lots of secrets and endings.
Trying to get your hands on a copy now is gona set you back a few hundred!!!

This deep customizable characters and the diverse classes and spells so very ahead of its time. We need an up to date and refreshed version of this game. It would definitely sell i promise.
This game is quite a hidden gem. One that could have helped the N64 issue with rpgs at that time but i guess developers wanted to make their games bigger and the N64 just couldnt provide whay they were looking for.

I loved it. I grew up on a farm when i was a kid and my mom bought this for me for Christmas. At first i didn't like it but eventually one day i sat down and put a few hours into it and OMG its absorbed my life for a few months after that. I think i played this when i was about in middle school so like 7th to 8th grade and i can say it was definitely a big part of my childhood. Now a days i prefer playing this on a emulator since i can fast forward the emulation when im farming for items/new characters and dragons or advancing the time line to get birthday items haha.
How can I play this game in computer or NS?

I loved this game. I only beat it once and it took me almost a year. I had work and school still so it wasn’t a constant play but was my favorite N64 game. This and Vandal Hearts on PS1 we’re probably my two favorite games of all time.
I was hooked on the story line and didn’t realize until I beat the game how much it mattered the decisions I made. Turns out I beat the game but I was too dark 🤣. Talk about frustration. I want to play it again so bad but that was over 20 years ago now

I know this is an old video but how long are each battles In Ogre 64? I am about done with the Snes version and these battles can take sometime well over an hour to beat if not lomger. Does each Battle take that long? I dont know if I should pick up a loose cart or buy it on the Wii u and use save states.
Have you seen the new Unicorn Overlord coming out? I feel like it scratches a similar itch to this series of games.

Only reason why there's no link to Snes titles, is because like tactics ogre knight of lodis; these games are based on yasumi matsuno's origional works on the SNES respectively; he left QUEST to join Squaresoft in the development of Final fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story.

I knew this game existed and expected it to polygonal based. Now that I see it's Sprite based I'm all the more excited to eventually play it. The SNES one remains my Holy Grail of collecting.

@@n64glennplant Fairly rare in the fact that I've never even found one at a convention. Currently costs around $90. I've seen more copies of Little Samson in person.
Read about this on Nintendo Powers back in the day. Saved my high school allowance and bought it as soon as I could. I even imported the soundtrack because it was so amazing!
I never did finish it at the time because sometime in college our N64 got stolen. But I still have my original cartridge. And I just started replaying it in Wii U Virtual Console. Cannot recomend this game enough for strategy nerds! :D
Awesome beautiful game! Even in the 64 era i was wondering now why more games didnt use this graphic style instead of awkward polygons. I was like 11... -.-
Yeah I too loved the visuals
I loved that game. Knew it had more than one ending, but I think I only ever managed the worst ending where you get an extra mission where everyone tries to kill you and the king tells you to go elsewhere and the good ending where I recruited everyone along the way.
Also, the hidden megaspell books and undead classes were fun, even if I did have to look up how to get most of them.
This is the first game I completed more than once. It was wonderful. Magic everytime I turned it on. Talkin HOURS BUD.

I only got to play this once because it was always rented out at my local store, but damn it blew me away. Those three or four days were all I needed to rank it as one of the top 64 games, period. Hugely underplayed classic.
